RESUMO

Trichodina centrostrigeata Basson, Van As et Paperna, 1983 from Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters) and O. niloticus (Linnaeus) from different host populations from Argentina, Mexico and South Africa was reviewed. Although T. centrostrigeata has a distinct denticle structure that makes morphological taxonomic inferences uncomplicated, variation of the denticles within and among individuals and populations were still observed. While traditional taxonomy of mobilines is heavily reliant on morphometrics, and recently even more so on molecular analysis, this paper proposes the use of geometric morphometry, specifically elliptical Fourier analysis, to address morphological conflicts that arise when comparing different populations. By applying this technique, combined with traditional taxonomy, it was found that T. centrostrigeata in this study can be grouped into two separate morphotypes, the first (type a) from aquaculture farms in Argentina and Mexico and the second (type b) from a natural habitat in Glen Alpine Dam, South Africa. This study supports the validity of geometric morphometry as an additional technique to distinguish not only between species but also evolutionary plasticity of the same species from different localities and habitats.

RESUMO

Wound healing is a highly regulated multi-step process that involves a plethora of signals. Blood perfusion is crucial in wound healing and abnormalities in the formation of new blood vessels define the outcome of the wound healing process. Thy-1 has been implicated in angiogenesis and silencing of the Thy-1 gene retards the wound healing process. However, the role of Thy-1 in blood perfusion during wound closure remains unclear. We proposed that Thy-1 regulates vascular perfusion, affecting the healing rate in mouse skin. We analyzed the time of recovery, blood perfusion using Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging, and tissue morphology from images acquired with a Nanozoomer tissue scanner. The latter was assessed in a tissue sample taken with a biopsy punch on several days during the wound healing process. Results obtained with the Thy-1 knockout (Thy-1-/-) mice were compared with control mice. Thy-1-/- mice showed at day seven, a delayed re-epithelialization, increased micro- to macro-circulation ratio, and lower blood perfusion in the wound area. In addition, skin morphology displayed a flatter epidermis, fewer ridges, and almost no stratum granulosum or corneum, while the dermis was thicker, showing more fibroblasts and fewer lymphocytes. Our results suggest a critical role for Thy-1 in wound healing, particularly in vascular dynamics.

RESUMO

Introduction: This study aims to analyze the influence of particles size of sol-gel derived calcium silicate particles in the setting reaction of bioactive endodontic cements. Materials and Methods: Sol-gel derived calcium silicate particles were synthesized and sieved to separate the particles in different sizes: CS400, CS200, and CS100. A commercial MTA (Control) was used as control. The particle size and the specific surface area were assessed by laser diffraction and nitrogen adsorption. The cements were prepared with water as the liquid for the reaction. The setting time was conducted according to ISO 6876, and the setting kinetics was analyzed by Fourier trans-formed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) at different time points between 120s to 72h. Results: The particle size varied from 9.45µm (CS400 ) to 31.01 (Control). The higher specific surface area valuer reached 15.14g/cm2 in the CS400. The smallest particle sizes, the higher specific surface area, and the lowest setting time were found for CS400 (p < 0.05). Control presented the highest setting time (p < 0.05). The FTIR analyses showed the differences in materials structure over time, with faster hydration and crystallization for CS400. The setting kinetics was slower for Control even when compared to a sol-gel derived group with similar particle size. Conclusion:The route of synthesis and the particle size influences the setting reaction of calcium silicate-based cements. The reduction of particle size for sol-gel derived calcium silicates lead to the acceleration of the setting reaction of the produced bioactive endodontic cement.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) allows the assessment of stroke patients' cortical excitability and corticospinal tract integrity, which provide information regarding motor function recovery. However, the extraction of features from motor-evoked potentials (MEP) elicited by TMS, such as amplitude and latency, is performed manually, increasing variability due to observer-dependent subjectivity. Therefore, an automatic methodology could improve MEP analysis, especially in stroke, which increases the difficulty of manual MEP measurements due to brain lesions. A methodology based on time-frequency features of stroke patients' MEPs that allows to automatically select and extract MEP amplitude and latency is proposed. The method was validated using manual measurements, performed by three experts, computed from patients' affected and unaffected hemispheres. Results showed a coincidence of 58.3 to 80% between automatic and manual MEP selection. There were no significant differences between the amplitudes and latencies computed by two of the experts with those obtained with the automatic method, for most comparisons. The median relative error of amplitudes and latencies computed by the automatic method was 5% and 23%, respectively. Therefore, the proposed method has the potential to reduce processing time and improve the computation of MEP features, by eliminating observer-dependent variability due to the subjectivity of manual measurements.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Apply elliptic Fourier analysis to find shape differences among the hypodivergent, normodivergent, and hyperdivergent growth patterns in skeletal classes I, II and, III in mandibular and maxillary curves and evaluate the discriminatory capacity of these differences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 626 adult patients were included: 354 Brazilian patients (52 with tomographic information and 302 with radiographic information) and 272 Colombian patients with radiographic information. Lateral views were selected. The maxillary and mandibular curves were digitized. Elliptic Fourier analysis was employed considering with 20 harmonics as well as filtering size, rotation, and translation properties. One-way non-parametric MANOVA was employed to determine differences. A confusion matrix tool was employed to analyze the discriminatory capacity of the model. RESULTS: Significant shape differences in the mandibular and maxillary contours were found among the hypodivergent, normodivergent, and hyperdivergent growth patterns in classes I, II, and III (p < 0.05). The accuracies obtained from the confusion matrix were respectively 74.1, 79.5, and 90.1% in classes I, II, and III in the mandibular curves and respectively 71.9, 73.9, and 75% in classes I, II, and III in the maxillary curves. CONCLUSIONS: Elliptic Fourier analysis can be used to find shape differences with an acceptable discriminatory capacity, especially in the mandible contour. Maxillary and mandibular bone curves each significantly defined facial biotypes regardless of the size and position properties. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This exploration offers a way to quantify mandibular morphology for the construction of an economic mandibular prediction system applicable to the Latin American population.

RESUMO

Continuum monitoring of mangrove ecosystems is required to maintain and improve upon national mangrove conservation strategies. In particular, mangrove canopy assessments using remote sensing methods can be undertaken rapidly and, if freely available, optimize costs. Although such spaceborne data have been used for such purposes, their application to map mangroves at the species level has been limited by the capacity to provide continuous data. The objective of this study was to assess mangrove seasonal patterns using seven multispectral vegetation indices based on a Sentinel-2 (S2) time series (July 2018 to October 2019) to assess phenological trajectories of various semiarid mangrove classes in the Google Earth Engine platform using Fourier analysis for an area located in Western Mexico. The results indicate that the months from November through December and from May through July were critical in mangrove species discrimination using the EVI2, NDVI, and VARI series. The Random Forest classification accuracy for the S2 image was calculated at 79% during the optimal acquisition period (June 25, 2019), whereas only 55% accuracy was calculated for the non-optimal image acquired date (March 2, 2019). Although mangroves are considered evergreen forests, the phenological pattern of various mangrove canopies, based on these indices, were shown to be very similar to the surrounding land-based semiarid deciduous forest. Consequently, it is believed that the rainfall pattern is likely to be the key environmental factor driving mangrove phenology in this semiarid coastal system and thus the degree of success in mangrove remote sensing classification endeavors. Identifying the optimal dates when canopy spectral conditions are ideal in achieving mangrove species discrimination could be of utmost importance when purchasing more expensive very-high spatial resolution satellite images or collecting spatial data from UAVs.

RESUMO

Abstract The objective of this study was to apply elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA) to find shape differences among skeletal growth patterns in both radiographic and tomographic panoramic views, controlling for asymmetry. Lateral and panoramic images were obtained from 350 patients. After screening patients with asymmetric linear and angular values and natural asymmetric hemimandibular shape, 240 patients were included in the study: 48 with tomographic information and 192 with radiographic information. The images were classified according to the mandibular plane angle and the ANB angle. Mandibular contours were digitized on the panoramic images and EFA was performed with 20 harmonics, filtering rotation, translation and size properties. As there were no differences between radiographic and tomographic panoramic mandibular contours and normal distribution was found in all groups, MANOVA was conducted to determine differences using a Hotelling's p-values with Bonferroni correction and an XY graph tool was applied to visualize these differences graphically. A 95% confidence level was used. Significative differences were found among hypodivergent, normodivergent, and hyperdivergent patterns in Class I, II, and III (p < 0.05), located mainly in the symphyseal region. The results of this study suggest that EFA is a useful tool to mathematically analyze mandibular contours and their morphological differences given by facial biotypes. This method could improve the precision of the mandibular prediction models.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT The genus Cichla is a highly diverse group, with 16 species already described. Externally, some species are very similar and discriminating between them may be very difficult. Nevertheless, discrimination of fish stocks is essential for management purposes. Morphometric analyses of otoliths have been successfully used to distinguish species and fish stocks, especially in marine environments. This study evaluated whether sagittal otolith shape can be used to discriminate among the species Cichla temensis, C. monoculus, and C. orinocensis, as well as within populations of C. temensis in rivers of the Amazon. Shape indices and Fourier coefficients were used to describe the shape of the otoliths. Among the groups of species, the morphology of the sagittal otolith of C. temensis was totally distinct from the species C. monoculus and C. orinocensis. While among populations of C. temensis, individuals from the Negro and Jatapú Rivers were different, regardless of the methods used. These results confirm the ability to differentiate species and populations by using the morphology of otoliths. However, more research is needed to verify the role of genetic versus environmental and biotic effects, and thus be able to explain the discrimination observed in otoliths.

BACKGROUND: Noncoding sequences have been demonstrated to possess regulatory functions. Its classification is challenging because they do not show well-defined nucleotide patterns that can correlate with their biological functions. Genomic signal processing techniques like Fourier transform have been employed to characterize coding and noncoding sequences. This transformation in a systematic whole-genome noncoding library, such as the ENCODE database, can provide evidence of a periodic behaviour in the noncoding sequences that correlates with their regulatory functions. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to classify different noncoding regulatory regions through their frequency spectra. METHODS: We computed machine learning algorithms to classify the noncoding regulatory sequences frequency spectra. RESULTS: The sequences from different regulatory regions, cell lines, and chromosomes possessed distinct frequency spectra, and that machine learning classifiers (such as those of the support vector machine type) could successfully discriminate among regulatory regions, thus correlating the frequency spectra with their biological functions CONCLUSION: Our work supports the idea that there are patterns in the noncoding sequences of the genome.

RESUMO

The calculation of symmetry in amputee gait is a valuable tool to assess the functional aspects of lower limb prostheses and how it impacts the overall gait mechanics. This paper analyzes the vertical trajectory of the body center of mass (CoM) of a group formed by transfemoral amputees and non-amputees to quantitatively compare the symmetry level of this parameter for both cases. A decomposition of the vertical CoM into discrete Fourier series (DFS) components is performed for each subject's CoM trajectory to identify the main components of each pattern. A DFS-based index is then calculated to quantify the CoM symmetry level. The obtained results show that the CoM displays different patterns along a gait cycle for each amputee, which differ from the sine-wave shape obtained in the non-amputee case. The CoM magnitude spectrum also reveals more coefficients for the amputee waveforms. The different CoM trajectories found in the studied subjects can be thought as the manifestation of developed compensatory mechanisms, which lead to gait asymmetries. The presence of odd components in the magnitude spectrum is related to the asymmetric behavior of the CoM trajectory, given the fact that this signal is an even function for a non-amputee gait. The DFS-based index reflects this fact due to the high value obtained for the non-amputee reference, in comparison to the low values for each amputee.

RESUMO

The otoliths are structures species-specific of fishes whose morphologic analysis is an efficient tool for identification and discrimination of stocks and/or populations subjected to clinal variations. This work intends to show the degrees of morphologic variation in sagitta otoliths of dolphinfish, Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758, landed by the fishing fleet from Rio de Janeiro. The 164 pairs of otoliths analyzed were obtained from biological samples collected between February 2014 and October 2016. The shape and the contour of sagitta otoliths were characterized by means of six descriptors (area, perimeter, circularity, rectangularity, eccentricity and fractal dimension) and Elliptical Fourier Analysis (EFA), from the images of otoliths. Interannual comparisons of shape descriptors showed significant differences (PERMANOVA p 0.0001) except rectangularity and fractal dimension. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA) between years exhibited a better classification (94.8%) for 2015, when the data was more consistent. The cluster analysis of the 30 harmonics based on Wards hierarchical algorithm revealed four otolith morphotypes. The principal components analysis (PCA) from harmonics of the 82 otoliths examined did not show spatial discrimination between fishing areas. Therefore, the observed morphotypes corroborate the existence of a polymorphism in the study area, determined by balanced temporal selection. This supposition can be supported by genetic studies realized in the region, where the hypothesis of two commercial morphotypes was rejected, confirming the presence of a mixed stock.(AU)

RESUMO

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of seasonality on femoral fracture incidence among people residing in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS Ecological study based on a consecutive series of 216,348 reports of hospital admissions caused by femoral fractures. A Bayesian statistical model was used for time series analysis, considering the monthly average number of events of femoral fractures per day as a dependent variable. RESULTS Among the female population, significant seasonal effects were observed only for older women, aged 60 years or more. Among younger men (aged less than 20 years) there is not a clear seasonal effect, but among the other age groups there seems to exist a higher number of cases of femoral fractures during the coldest months of the year. CONCLUSIONS In general, more cases of fractures occur during the coldest months of the year; however, men and women have different patterns of incidence according to each age group.

RESUMO

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), named as Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), is the vector of the bacterium associated with huanglongbing (HLB), the most destructive citrus disease. The use of citrus flushing and ACP monitoring tools is essential for the knowledge of the occurrence pattern of cycles of both and for the improvement of the ACP management. During 3 years, 20 branches from 20 trees were evaluated for vegetative flushing, ACP abundance, and occupation in tree and branches in a Brazilian citrus area free for HLB. The obtained data was investigated through spectral and co-spectral analyses. Four to 12 flush shoot cycles occurred per year, which were similar to abundance and occupation cycles of ACP, with an apparent synchronization between these variables. In general, there was a difference from 14 to 19 days between flushing and ACP peaks, with an occurrence of the flushing peaks before the ACP peaks. Results will provide useful information to citrus growers and agricultural defense agencies to apply a suitable and targeted ACP management, which will avoid or delay the disease entrance into still free HLB areas. In addition, the modeling of occupation and abundance cycles of vectors as applied in this study may be useful for other pathosystems which insect vectors are associated or even in the intrusion monitoring programs.

RESUMO

This study reports a new Trichodinidae, Trichodina bellottii n. sp., parasitizing the pearly fish Austrolebias bellottii from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Its small subunit ribosomal ribonucleic acid (SSU rDNA) was sequenced for the first time. Based on the results from morphological identification, SSU rDNA sequencing, and Elliptical Fourier analysis, the new species was identified and compared with similar species. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the genetic distances among the new species and similar species reached interspecific levels, furthermore, the phylogenetic study also validated the identification of T. bellottii n. sp. and its placement in the genus Trichodina. To be able to quantitatively describe the differences in shapes with similar species, this study used the elliptic Fourier analysis by first time in this genus.

RESUMO

We present two cases of study of ontogenetic allometry in outlines of bivalves using longitudinal data, a rarity among fossils, based on the preserved post-larval record of shells. The examples are two infaunal burrowing bivalves of the southern South America, Claibornicardia paleopatagonica (Archiheterodonta: Carditidae) (early Paleocene) and Crassatella kokeni (Archiheterodonta: Crassatellidae) (late Oligocene-late Miocene). Outline analyses were conducted using a geometric morphometric approach (Elliptic Fourier Analysis), obtaining successive outlines from shells' growth lines, which were used to reconstruct ontogenetic trajectories. In both taxa, ontogenetic changes are characterized by the presence of positive allometry in the extension of posterior end, resulting in elongated adult shells. This particular allometric growth is known in others infaunal burrowing bivalves (Claibornicardia alticostata and some Spissatella species) and the resulting adult morphology is present in representatives of several groups (e.g., Carditidae, Crassatellidae, Veneridae, Trigoniidae). Taxonomic, ecological and evolutionary implications of this allometric growth pattern are discussed.

RESUMO

The subgenus Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) (Diptera: Culicidae) includes the primary vectors of Plasmodium spp. in Colombia. Most adult females of this subgenus are difficult to identify in the field using the available keys. With the objective of further investigating the discriminatory power of modern morphometrics, both landmark-based and outline-based approaches were explored using the wing venation geometry of 11 Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) species. Wing shape was able to separate the closest species of the subgenus. When the 11 species were analysed together, validated classification scores on average 5.3-8.6 times higher than those expected by chance were observed. These scores computed from the total sample of 11 species were not satisfactory for the recognition of Anopheles benarrochi B, Anopheles oswaldoi s.l. and Anopheles strodei. These sibling species were captured in sympatry. To improve the identification power of the morphometric tool, it was necessary to analyse these species separately from the remaining species. The best classification scores were obtained using a combination of 12 landmarks collected not only on the intersections of wing veins, but also on spots. An outline approach also gave excellent reclassification scores. Another pair of sibling species, collected in allopatry, Anopheles nuneztovari and Anopheles rangeli, also showed high classification scores.

RESUMO

Purpose: To compare the results of central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements obtained using optical low-coherence reflectometry (OLCR), Fourier domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT), and a Scheimpflug camera (SC), combined with Placido corneal topography. Methods: A total of 25 healthy subjects were enrolled in the present study, and one eye of each subject was included. A detailed ophthalmic examination was performed in all cases following CCT measurements with OLCR, FD-OCT, and SC. The results were compared using an ANOVA test. Bland-Altman analysis was used to demonstrate agreement between methods. Intra-examiner repeatability was assessed by using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Results: Statistically significant differences were observed between the results of the CCT measurements obtained using the three different devices (p=0.009). Significant correlations were found between OLCR and FD-OCT (r=0.97; p<0.0001), FD-OCT and SC (r=0.91; p<0.0001), and OLCR and SC (r=0.95; p<0.0001). The 95% limits of agreement (LOA) obtained from Bland-Altman plots were from -7.2 μm to 28.7 μm for OLCR versus FD-OCT, from -19.2 μm to 30.4 μm for OLCR versus SC, and from -42.6 to 32.3 μm for FD-OCT versus SC. Intra-examiner repeatability was excellent for each method, with ICCs >0.98. Conclusion: Although the results of CCT measurements obtained from these three devices were highly correlated with one another and the mean differences between instruments were comparable with the reported diurnal CCT fluctuation, the measurements are not directly interchangeable in clinical practice because of the wide LOA values. .

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Research of electroencephalograph (EEG) power spectrum and mean frequency has shown inconsistent results in patients with schizophrenic, schizoaffective and bipolar disorders during medication when compared to normal subjects thus; the characterization of these parameters is an important task. METHODS: We applied quantitative EEG (qEEG) to investigate 38 control, 15 schizophrenic, 7 schizoaffective and 11 bipolar disorder subjects which remaine under the administration of psychotropic drugs (except control group). Absolute spectral power (ASP), mean frequency and hemispheric electrical asymmetry were measured by 19 derivation qEEG. Group mean values were compared with non parametrical Mann-Whitney test and spectral EEG maps with z-score method at p < 0.05. RESULTS: Most frequent drug treatments for schizophrenic patients were neuroleptic+antiepileptic (40% of cases) or 2 neuroleptics (33.3%). Schizoaffective patients received neuroleptic+benzodiazepine (71.4%) and for bipolar disorder patients neuroleptic+antiepileptic (81.8%). Schizophrenic (at all derivations except for Fp1, Fp2, F8 and T6) and schizoaffective (only at C3) show higher values of ASP (+57.7% and +86.1% respectively) compared to control group. ASP of bipolar disorder patients did not show differences against control group. The mean frequency was higher at Fp1 (+14.2%) and Fp2 (+17.4%) in bipolar disorder patients than control group, but no differences were found in frequencies between schizophrenic or schizoaffective patients against the control group. Majority of spectral differences were found at the left hemisphere in schizophrenic and schizoaffective but not in bipolar disorder subjects. CONCLUSION: The present report contributes to characterize quantitatively the qEEG in drug treated schizophrenic, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder patients.
