OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to evaluate protamine sulfate effects on graft's blood flow by comparing transit-time flow measurement (TTFM) values before and after protamine administration. METHODS: This is an observational study with data collected between years 2018 and 2020. Immediate graft patency was evaluated using TTFM. Only patients with TTFM parameters registered before and after protamine infusion were included. The main three parameters studied were:  mean graft flow  (MGF),  pulsatility index (PI), and  diastolic flow (DF). In the first analysis, all conduits were evaluated regardless of the surgical technique used. In a second analysis, on-pump and off-pump groups were compared. Evaluated grafts were left internal thoracic artery, saphenous vein graft (SVG), radial artery, and right internal thoracic artery. Since SVG was numerically the most used graft, an exclusive analysis was created. RESULTS: Our study included 575 patients, resulting in a total of 1686 grafts, mean 2.93 grafts/patient. Off-pump surgery was performed in 158 patients. Before protamine infusion, inadequate TTFM parameters were observed in 3.8% of grafts. Overall, after protamine administration, MGF decreased in all grafts, but its reduction was not statistically significant. PI values increased in the SVG and DF values reduced in LIMA grafts. SVG group analysis showed that after protamine PI values were higher in OM1 and RCA. DF values increased in RCA. The comparison between off and on-pump surgeries, showed that in off-pump cases TTFM measures did not present statistically significant differences. CONCLUSION: Significant variations were observed in TTFM values before and after protamine administration. Although different, those values remained within the normal reference ranges. We recommend that flow measurement should be performed before protamine infusion.

Objectives.In cardiovascular magnetic resonance, the 3D time-resolved phase-contrast technique, also known as 4D flow, is gaining increasing attention due to applications that exploit three-directional velocity encoding throughout the cardiac cycle. Blood flow volume assessment usually requires an expert to draw regions of interest (ROI) around the vessel cross section, whereas the errors involved in this estimation have not been thoroughly investigated. Our objective is to quantify the influence of ROI sizing, angulation and spatial resolution of the reconstructed plane employed in blood flow measurements using 4D flow.Approach.Three circular ROIs were drawn around the ascending, arch and descending aorta of healthy volunteers (n= 27) and patients with a dilated ascending aorta or bicuspid valve (n= 37). We applied systematic changes of ROI diameter (up to ±10%), tilt angle (up to ±25°) and spatial resolution (from 0.25 to 2 mm) of the reconstructed oblique planes, calculating the effects on net, forward and backward blood flow volumes.Main results.Patients had a larger ascending aorta than healthy volunteers with similar ages and male sex proportion (60 ± 15 y.o. vs 58 ± 16 y.o. and 84% vs 70%, respectively). Higher forward and backward flow volumes were observed in the ascending aorta and the aortic arch of the patients with respect to controls (p< 0.001), whereas net volumes were similar: 74.0 ± 20.8 ml versus 75.7 ± 21.8 ml (p= 0.37), respectively. The ascending aorta was the most sensitive to ROI modifications. Changes of ±10% in the ROI diameter and ±25° in tilt angles produced flow volume differences of up to 9 ml (10%) and 18 ml (15%) in controls and patients, respectively. Modifying the reconstructed planes spatial resolution produced flow volume changes below 2 ml.Significance.Since the setting of the ROI size and plane angle could produce errors that represent up to 20% of the forward and/or backward aortic flow volume, a good standardization for vessel segmentation and plane positioning is desirable.

The objective of this work is the study of the procedure for flow rate measurement derived from temperature profiles. This method is deemed appropriate because of the inability to mount conventional flow meters in multiple-zone oil wells. In this work, a reduced-scale prototype well with horizontal geometry was developed to study and validate a method of flow profiling by temperature measurements in the well column based on a heat transfer mathematical model studied by Ramey in 1962. Flow sensors were installed at key points to provide validation data for the flow measurements derived from the temperature. The plant was automated and all the tests were managed from a workstation. It was possible to test different situations to provide a variability of evaluation scenarios. The initial experiments used injected fluid flow rates of 15 and 18 L/min in the well inlet. The results of the calculated flow values in different work conditions were compared with a relatively low error reference meter.

Objective: to compare Doppler measurements with real flow in a in-vitro model, with variable diameters and insonation angle. Methods: The silicone tubes were 3-8 mm width, and set with variable inclinations from 40° to 70°. Two pumps with constant flow were used for all combinations of diameters and angles. A Sonoace 8000 from Medison was used. Real flow was compared to measured flow. Results: The measured flows varied importantly in different conditions. In a 3 mm tube, estimated flow increased from 212 ml/min to 403 ml/min when the angle was increased from 40° to 70°, when real flow was 140 ml. As well, in 8 mm tubes, estimated flow increased from 651 ml/min to 1.080 ml/min when the angle was increased from 40° to 70°, when real flow was 360 ml/min. Measured flows were 1.6 times greater than real flow. Conclusion: Measured flows were greater than real, with greater increase in larger tubes and greater angles. This confirms that velocity measurements need lowest angles possible. Measured flows are only representations of real flow, but can be considered useful as they were reproducible.


Objetivos: Recientes aplicaciones del Doppler pulsado se han orientado hacia la medición del flujo (ml/s) de la vena umbilical fetal, sin embargo sus mediciones han tenido cuestionamientos desde el punto de vista de la validez, por el efecto del ángulo y el flujo laminar. El objetivo de este estudio es probar la validez de las mediciones ecográficas en un modelo in vitro. Métodos: Se construyó un sistema dentro de un reservorio de agua, en que se instalaron tubos de silicona variando el lumen (3-8 mm), inclinación del tubo (40°-70°) y dos velocidades de infusión de agua. Se instaló la sonda convexa del transductor transabdominal a 5 cm sobre el tubo, de modo que todo el trayecto del tubo sea visualizado en la pantalla del ecógrafo SONOACE 8000 de Medison. Se corrigió el ángulo con la función del ecógrafo. El flujo se estimó por ecografía al multiplicar la velocidad medida por Doppler pulsado por el área interna del tubo. Se comparó el flujo medido real, obtenido por el volumen de agua obtenida en un minuto de funcionamiento de la bomba, y el medido por ecografía Doppler. El flujo medido por Doppler se obtuvo 2 veces, para comparar la variación intrínseca del método y verificar su confiabilidad. Resultados: Los flujos obtenidos variaron según las condiciones mecánicas importantemente. En tubos de 3 mm de diámetro, con ángulos crecientes de 40° a 70°, los fl ujos estimados aumentaron de 212 ml/min a 403 ml/min cuando el flujo real era de 140 ml/min. A su vez, en tubos de 8 mm, con ángulos crecientes de 40° a 70°, los flujos estimados aumentaron de 651 ml/min a 1.080 ml/min, cuando el flujo real era de 360 ml/min. Se demostró una correlación lineal entre el flujo estimado y el real de: Qestimado=(Qreal x 1,63)+181, r= 0,84. La aplicación del test de Bland y Altman demostró que las mediciones son repetibles y consistentes. Conclusión: Los flujos medidos en ecografía fueron 1,6 veces más que los obtenidos en flujo real en las condiciones mecánicas...

This research introduces the development of an electronic flowmeter based on the drag force that a body experiences when immersed in a fluid stream. Its main goal was the development of an Electronic Drag Force Flowmeter (EDFF) using a load cell, as well as the evaluation of its performance parameters. The developed flowmeter should not require specialized labor, equipments, computers or any sophisticated and complex method, providing an easy and accurate way of flow estimation. This research was carried out in the following stages: (i) EDFF mechanical structure development; (ii) data acquisition system and embedded software design; and (iii) evaluation of EDFF performance parameters. EDFF has routines for instantaneous flow rate measurement, interactive calibration, and also several flow meter parameter adjustments, allowing data transmission via a RS232 protocol. The real-time flow measurement task updates values of instantaneous flow rate each seven seconds, enabling unit selection. The interactive calibration routine guides users during all calibration process showing instructions on EDFF's display. A data digital filtering procedure was implemented in an embedded software using the Grubbs' Test in order to identify and to remove outliers from the acquired data. The Method of Least Squares was also implemented in the embedded software in order to calculate the fitting model coefficients on the calibration procedure. This flowmeter is able to work from 1.94 to 7.78 dm³ s-1 with an uncertainty of ± 5.7%. The coefficient of local head loss (K) was close to 0.55 for Reynolds number values higher than 10(5). The developed EDFF is a low-cost and stand-alone system with potential for agricultural applications.


Este estudo apresenta o desenvolvimento de um medidor de vazão baseado na força de arraste que atua em um corpo imerso em uma corrente líquida. O principal objetivo foi o desenvolvimento de um Medidor de Vazão Eletrônico tipo Força (MVEF) utilizando célula de carga, bem como a avaliação do desempenho do equipamento. Esta pesquisa foi executada nas seguintes etapas: (i) desenvolvimento da estrutura mecânica do MVEF; (ii) desenvolvimento do sistema de aquisição de dados e do software embarcado; e (iii) avaliação dos parâmetros de desempenho do MVEF. O medidor de vazão desenvolvido possibilita a transmissão de dados via serial (RS-232) e possui rotinas para medição de vazão instantânea, calibração interativa e opções para ajuste de alguns parâmetros de funcionamento. O Teste de Grubbs foi utilizado no software embarcado com a finalidade de identificar e remover dados inconsistentes do conjunto amostral, sendo, portanto, um procedimento de filtragem digital de dados. A rotina de calibração do medidor de vazão consta de um algoritmo que utiliza o Método dos Mínimos Quadrados para determinação dos coeficientes de ajuste do modelo adotado. O medidor de vazão desenvolvido opera na faixa de 1,94 a 7,78 dm³ s-1 com incerteza de ± 5,7%. O coeficiente de perda de carga localizada característico do medidor de vazão foi de aproximadamente 0,55 para condições com Número de Reynolds superior a 10(5). O medidor de vazão desenvolvido apresenta baixo custo, sendo viável para utilização em aplicações agrícolas.

In this research, we present a simple mechanical assembly for evaluation of frequency response of flow transducers. Also, two pneumotachometer/pressure transducer (PPT) ensembles were evaluated with this setup. The accuracy of the measurements depended mainly on the physical dimensions of a piston, without need for a closed-loop control for the generated flow, which would demand a pre-calibrated electronic pressure transducer or an optical position detection device. The gain and phase curves found for both evaluatedPPTs are presented. We conclude that the presented mechanism is suitable to evaluate the dynamic response of these PPTs in the range between 1.0 and 50.0  Hz. Regarding the evaluated PPTs, we concluded that the gain curves in the whole dynamic range of both assemblies were 0 and +2.63  dB for PPT assembly 1, and 0 and +6.70  dB for PPT assembly 2.


Este trabalho apresenta um sistema mecânico simples para levantamentoda resposta em freqüência de transdutores de vazão de gás. Dois conjuntos de pneumotacômetro/transdutor de pressão (PPT) foram avaliados com este sistema. A exatidão das medidas dependeu principalmente das dimensões de um pistão, sem a necessidade de controle com malha fechada da vazão gerada, o que demandaria o uso de um transdutor de pressão eletrônico pré-calibrado ou um dispositivo óptico para detecção de posição. As curvas de ganho e defasagem dos dois conjuntos PPT avaliados são apresentadas. É possível concluir que o mecanismo apresentado é capaz de avaliar a resposta dinâmica destes PPTs na faixa de 1,0 a 50,0  Hz. Em relação à avaliação dos PPTs, concluiu-se que as curvas de ganho em toda a faixa dinâmica avaliada em ambos PPTs ficaram entre 0 e +2,63  dB para o conjunto PPT 1 e entre 0 e +6,70  dB para o conjunto PPT 2.
