RESUMO

The growing production of urban solid waste is a structural problem faced by most cities around the world. The proliferation of mini-open dumps (MOD; small spontaneous open-air waste dumps formed in urban and peri-urban areas) on the banks of the Paraná River is particularly evident. During the historical drought (June-December 2021), we carried out sampling campaigns identifying MODs of the Santa Fe River, a secondary channel of the Paraná River. MOD were geolocated, measured, described and classified by origin. The distance to the river and other sensitive places was considered (houses-schools-health facilities). Our results suggested a serious environmental issue associated with poor waste management. MOD were extremely abundant in the study area, being mostly composed of domestic litter. Plastics clearly dominated the MOD composition. Burning was frequently observed as a method to reduce the volume of MOD. We concluded that the proliferation of MOD is a multi-causal problem associated with a failure of public policies and a lack of environmental education.

Eutrophication, climate change, and river flow fragmentation are the main cause of nuisance algal blooms worldwide. This study evaluated the conditions that trigger the growth and occurrence of nuisance phytoplankton in the Santa Lucía River, a subtropical floodplain lotic system that supplies drinking water to 60% of the population of Uruguay. The main variables that explained phytoplankton biovolume were extracted from generalized linear models (GLM). The potential impact of nuisance organism advection on water utility was estimated by the phytoplankton biovolume transport (BVTR, m3 day-1), an indicator of biomass load. Santa Lucía River had a wide flow range (0.7×105-1438×105 m3 day-1) and eutrophic conditions (median, TP: 0.139 mg L-1; TN: 0.589 mg L-1). GLMs indicated that phytoplankton biomass increased with temperature and soluble reactive phosphorus. Contrary to expectations, the presence of cyanobacteria was positively associated with periods of high flow that result in high cyanobacterial biovolume transport, with a probability of 3.35 times higher when flow increased by one standard deviation. The cyanobacterial biovolume transported (max: 9.5 m3 day-1) suggests that biomass was subsidized by allochthonous inocula. Biovolume from other nuisance groups (diatoms, cryptophytes, and euglenophytes) was positively associated with low-flow conditions and high nutrient concentrations in the main river channel, thereby indicating that these conditions boost eukaryote blooms. The evaluation of BVTR allows a better understanding of the dynamics of fluvial phytoplankton and can help to anticipate scenarios of nuisance species transport.

We examined diets of four piscivores, two in the order Perciformes (Cichla temensis and C. orinocensis) and two in the order Characiformes (Boulengerella cuvieri and B. lucius), from the Cinaruco, La Guardia, and Ventuari rivers in Venezuela throughout the wet-dry seasonal cycle. The four piscivores consumed a phylogenetically and morphologically diverse group of fishes, reflecting the overall diversity of fish species in these rivers. At the start of the falling-water period, Cichla consumed large prey, especially the abundant, migratory, fish of the genus Semaprochilodus. As these relatively large prey became depleted during the dry season, Cichla tended to consume smaller prey. For Boulengerella, gape limitation precluded consumption of larger, seasonally abundant, fishes, and so prey sizes were more consistent throughout the seasonal cycle. Our findings show how prey abundance and gape limitations interact to influence seasonal patterns of predator-prey interactions.(AU)


Foram examinadas as dietas de quatro espécies de peixes piscívoros, duas da ordem Perciformes (Cichla temensis and C. orinocensis) e duas da ordem Characiformes (Boulengerella cuvieri and B. lucius), coletadas durante os ciclos de cheia e seca nos rios Cinaruco, La Guardia e Ventari, Venezuela. Os quatro piscívoros consumiram grupos de peixes filogenética e morfologicamente diversos, o que reflete a ampla diversidade de peixes nos rios estudados. No início da vazante, Cichla consumiu presas grandes, especialmente Semaprochilodus, um peixe migrador muito abundante. Com a diminuição das presas maiores durante a estação seca, Cichla tendeu a se alimentar de presas menores. Para Boulengerella, a limitação da abertura bucal impediu o consumo de peixes grandes e sazonalmente abundantes e, deste modo, o tamanho de suas presas foi menos variável ao longo do ciclo sazonal. Nossos resultados mostram como a abundância das presas e a limitação na abertura bucal interagem, influenciando os padrões de interação predador-presa.(AU)
