Integrative studies are lacking on the responses of digestive enzymes and energy reserves in conjunction with morphological traits at distinct postprandial times in marine estuarine-dependent flatfishes of ecological and economic importance, such as Paralichthys orbignyanus. We determined total weight (TW), hepato-somatic index (IH), activities of digestive enzymes in the intestine, and the concentration of energy reserves in the liver and the muscle at 0, 24, 72, and 360 h after feeding in juveniles of P. orbignyanus. Amylase activity decreased at 72 h (about 30%). Maltase, sucrose, and lipase activities reached peak at 24 h (67%, 600%, and 35%, respectively). Trypsin and aminopeptidase-N activities at 24 and 72 h, respectively, were lower than those at t = 0 (53% and 30%). A peak increase in the concentration of glycogen and triglycerides in the liver (24 h) (86% and 89%, respectively) occurred. In muscle, glycogen and triglyceride concentrations were unchanged at 24 h and higher at 72 and 360 h (100% and 60%). No changes were found in TW, IH, free glucose in the liver and muscle, and protein in the liver. The protein concentration in the muscle sharply increased at 24 and 360 h after feeding (60%). The results indicate a distinct and specific response of central components of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism that could be adjustments at the biochemical level upon periods of irregular feeding and even of long-term food deprivation inside coastal lagoons or estuaries. The distinct responses of digestive enzymes in the intestine and energy reserves in the liver and muscle suggest the differential modulation of tissue-specific anabolic and catabolic pathways that would allow the maintenance of physical conditions.

Vitamin K (VK) is a fat-soluble vitamin necessary for fish metabolism and health. VK stability as dietary component during aquafeed storage and its potential effect on intestinal microbiome in fish have not yet been completely elucidated. The convenient storage conditions of aquafeeds when supplemented with phylloquinone (VK1), as well as its potential effects on the gut microbiota of Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) juveniles, have been explored. Experimental feeds were formulated to contain 0, 250 and 1250 mg kg-1 of VK1 and were stored at different temperatures (4, -20 or -80 °C). VK stability was superior at -20 °C for short-term (7 days) storage, while storing at -80 °C was best suited for long-term storage (up to 3 months). A comparison of bacterial communities from Senegalese sole fed diets containing 0 or 1250 mg kg-1 of VK1 showed that VK1 supplementation decreased the abundance of the Vibrio, Pseudoalteromonas, and Rhodobacterace families. All these microorganisms were previously associated with poor health status in aquatic organisms. These results contribute not only to a greater understanding of the physiological effects of vitamin K, particularly through fish intestinal microbiome, but also establish practical guidelines in the industry for proper aquafeed storage when supplemented with VK1.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the fine flounder Paralichthys adspersus, was determined for the first time through Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) approach. The mitogenome (GenBank accession no. MW288827) has 17,060 bp in length and consisted of the well-known 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and the control region. The overall nucleotide composition of the whole mitogenome was A: 27.5%, C: 29.5%, G: 17.1%, and T: 25.9%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 12 protein-coding genes clustered P. adspersus in the monophyletic Paralichthyidae clade, showing the closest phylogenetic relationship with its congeneric species P. olivaceus.

The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites (PAHm) and their bioconcentration factors (BCF) were determined in the larval stages of the cestode Oncomegas wageneri, recovered from the intestine of the Mexican flounder Cyclopsetta chittendeni, in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The PAHm concentrations in O. wageneri were measured using fixed-wavelength fluorescence spectrometry and compared with PAHm concentrations in host bile. Oncomegas wageneri PAHm concentrations were markedly higher than those in host tissues. The highest BCF values were obtained for 1-hydroxypyrene (OHP) and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). Using a General Linear Model, a significant negative relationship was found between O. wageneri PAHm concentrations (as response variable) and the number of O. wageneri and oil well proximity. Low BCF values and PAHm concentrations in C. chittendeni correlated positively with O. wageneri PAHm concentrations. In contrast, high BCF values for PAHm concentrations in C. chittendeni had a negative association with O. wageneri PAHm concentrations. This study provides the first evidence of the presence of PAHm in intestinal larval cestodes of marine flatfishes, demonstrating levels of PAHm that were higher than levels in their hosts.

RESUMO

Five adult paralichthyid specimens with various kinds of abnormalities are reported from the south-west Atlantic Ocean. These abnormal flatfish specimens represent the first records of wholly ambicoloured Paralichthys orbignyanus specimens having a deep notch between the eye and dorsal fin and a partially albinistic specimen having skeletal deformities and only the second record of an almost totally ambicoloured specimen. We also report the first observation of reversal in Paralichthys patagonicus and an almost totally ambicoloured, reversed Xystreurys rasile.

The Remo flounder, Oncopterus darwinii Steindachner, 1874 is a small Pleuronectidae (~ 250 mm TL) distributed in the warm-temperate zone from Santa Catarina (28°S - Brazil) to the Gulf of San Matías (42°S - Argentina). We studied the occurrence and diet of juveniles of this flatfish (85% < 100 mm TL) for one year (August 2009 to July 2010) in a southern Brazilian sandy beach. Individuals were much more common in spring and early summer than in the other seasons. Of the 758 individuals analyzed, only 69 (9.1%) were found with empty stomachs. The Remo flounder fed predominantly on small crustaceans (gammarid amphipods, mysids and the hipiidae Emerita brasiliensis Schmitt, 1935) and no seasonal differences were found in the composition of the diet of this flatfish. However, variations in the Index of Relative Importance (IRI) were found among seasons, which most likely can be explained by a decrease in the availability of favored food items throughout the year. The pattern of distribution of O. darwinii indicates that southern Brazilian sandy beaches are used as nursery ground for this species.

American soles (family Achiridae) have been characterized by remarkable chromosomal variation even though several species lack basic cytogenetic information. This trend indicates that chromosomal traits can be useful to taxonomy once the morphological identification of some taxa in this family (e.g., Achirus species) is controversial. In this work, we expand the cytogenetic data in Achiridae by providing the first karyotypic analysis of Achirus achirus. An unusual multiple sex chromosome system (X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y) was detected, once males presented 2n = 33 with three unpaired chromosomes (X1X2Y) while females presented 2n = 34 with two acrocentric pairs (X1X1 and X2X2) found in hemizygosis in males. The 18S rDNA clusters were observed interspersed with GC-rich sites in a single pair. However, the 5S rRNA genes were dispersed through the genome of A. achirus in a sex-specific manner (10 clusters in males and 12 in females), as a result of the presence of ribosomal cistrons in X1 and X2 chromosomes. This pattern allowed us to infer that Y chromosome has evolved by partial deletion followed by fusion of proto-X1 and proto-X2 homologous chromosomes. The high rate of genomic evolution in Achiridae could have favored their reproductive isolation and speciation even in sympatric conditions.

Longfin sanddab (Citharichthys xanthostigma) represents a very important fishery resource in Southern and Baja California but are not very well known. The purpose of this study is to provide information on the growth and mortality of longfin sanddab population in the Mexican Pacific Ocean at Baja California, México. Data on growth were obtained for longfin sanddab collected with otter trawls during six cruises off the Western coast of Baja California. A total of 1 017 longfin sanddab were caught over the sampling period, and from 860 specimens, the male to female ratio was 1:1.8. The relationship between total weight (W) and standard length (SL) is described: W=0.00000743 SL3.196 for females and W=0.00000764 SL3.193 for males. Age groups were estimated from length frequency data, and von Bertalanffy annual growth parameters for all fish data combined were the following: L∞=289.2mm SL, k=0.20, t0=-0.73; for males, they were L∞=265.9mm SL, k=0.21, t0=-0.68, and for females, L∞=293.6mm SL, k=0.23, t0=-0.35. Longfin sanddab caught during this study reached a maximum age of 10 years, and at that age, males attained smaller sizes than females. The age groups had a total mortality (Z) rate of 0.82 year-1, a fishing mortality (F) of 0.52 year-1, and a natural mortality (M) of 0.3 year-1. Although the longfin sanddab is not a target species of commercial fisheries, it suffers high mortality as part of the bycatch in the shrimp fishery. Rev. Biol. Trop. 58 (2): 689-705. Se presenta información sobre el crecimiento y mortalidad de la población del C. xanthostigma (lenguado alón) en el Pacífico Mexicano de Baja California, México. Datos sobre su crecimiento fueron obtenidos de peces capturados con red de arrastre durante seis cruceros en la costa Oeste de Baja California, México. Se capturaron 1 017 peces en este periodo. La relación machos:hembras de 860 ejemplares fue de 1:1.2. La relación peso total (W) y longitud estándar (SL) se estimó para hembras: W=0.00000743 SL 3.196 y para machos: W=0.00000764 SL 3.193. La edad de los grupos se calculó con datos de frecuencia por longitud, el crecimiento de von Bertalanffy global fue: L∞=289.2mm SL, k=0.20, t0= -0.73; para los machos: L∞=265.9 mm SL, k=0.21, t0= -0.68 y para las hembras: L∞=293.6mm SL, k=0.23, t0=-0.35, anualmente. La captura de C. xanthostigma durante este estudio alcanzó una edad máxima de 10 años. Los machos alcanzan tallas menores que las hembras a la misma edad. Los grupos de edad tuvieron una tasa de mortalidad total (Z) de 0.82 por año, una mortalidad por pesca (F) de 0.52 por año y mortalidad natural (M) de 0.3 por año. Aunque el C. xanthostigma no es una especie objetivo (comercial), sufre una alta mortalidad indirecta durante la pesca del camarón.
