Before December 2020, Antarctica had remained free of COVID-19 cases. The main concern during the pandemic was the limited health facilities available at Antarctic stations to deal with the disease as well as the potential impact of SARS-CoV-2 on Antarctic wildlife through reverse zoonosis. In December 2020, 60 cases emerged in Chilean Antarctic stations, disrupting the summer campaign with ongoing isolation needs. The SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in the wastewater of several scientific stations. In Antarctica, treated wastewater is discharged directly into the seawater. No studies currently address the recovery of infectious virus particles from treated wastewater, but their presence raises the risk of infecting wildlife and initiating new replication cycles. This study highlights the initial virus detection in wastewater from Antarctic stations, identifying viral RNA via RT-qPCR targeting various genomic regions. The virus's RNA was found in effluent from two wastewater plants at Maxwell Bay and O'Higgins Station on King George Island and the Antarctic Peninsula, respectively. This study explores the potential for the reverse zoonotic transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from humans to Antarctic wildlife due to the direct release of viral particles into seawater. The implications of such transmission underscore the need for continued vigilance and research.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to humans and animals as well as the environment. Within agricultural settings, the utilization of antimicrobial agents in animal husbandry can lead to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. In Chile, the widespread use of animal-derived organic amendments, including manure and compost, requires an examination of the potential emergence of AMR resulting from their application. The aim of this research was to identify and compare AMR genes found in fertilized soils and manure in Los Andes city, Chile. Soil samples were collected from an agricultural field, comprising unamended soils, amended soils, and manure used for crop fertilization. The selected genes (n = 28) included genes associated with resistance to beta-lactams, tetracyclines, sulfonamides, polymyxins, macrolides, quinolones, aminoglycosides, as well as mobile genetic elements and multidrug resistance genes. Twenty genes were successfully identified in the samples. Tetracycline resistance genes displayed the highest prevalence, followed by MGE and sulfonamides, while quinolone resistance genes were comparatively less abundant. Notably, blaOXA, sulA, tetO, tetW, tetM, aac (6) ib., and intI1, exhibited higher frequencies in unamended soils, indicating their potential persistence within the soil microbiome and contribution to the perpetuation of AMR over time. Given the complex nature of AMR, it is crucial to adopt an integrated surveillance framework that embraces the One Health approach, involving multiple sectors, to effectively address this challenge. This study represents the first investigation of antimicrobial resistance genes in agricultural soils in Chile, shedding light on the presence and dynamics of AMR in this context.

The shedding of SARS-CoV-2 RNA titers by infected individuals, even asymptomatic and oligosymptomatic ones, allows the use of wastewater monitoring to track the COVID-19 spread in a community. This approach is interesting especially for emerging countries with limited clinical testing capabilities. However, there are still important methodological aspects that need validation so that wastewater monitoring data become more representative and useful for public health. This study evaluated the between-day and within-day variability of SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations in 24-hour composite and grab samples from three different sampling points, including two wastewater treatment plants (WTTP) and a sewer manhole. In the between-day evaluation (17 weeks of monitoring), a good agreement between the SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentration of each sampling method was observed. There were no significant differences between the mean concentrations of the grab and composite samples (p-value > 0.05), considering N1 and N2 gene assays. The strong relationship between composite and grab samples was proven by correlation coefficients: Pearson's r of 0.83 and Spearman's rho of 0.78 (p-value < 0.05). In within-day evaluation, 24-hour cycles were analyzed and low variability in hourly viral concentrations was observed for three sampling points. The coefficient of variation (CV) values ranged from 3.0% to 11.5%. Overall, 24-hour profiles showed that viral RNA concentrations had less variability and greater agreement with the mean values between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m, the recommended time for grab sampling. Therefore, this study provides important information on wastewater sampling techniques for COVID-19 surveillance. Wastewater monitoring information will only be useful to public health and decision-makers if we ensure data quality through best practices.

Mosquito surveillance is a crucial process for understanding the population dynamics of mosquitoes, as well as implementing interventional programs for controlling and preventing the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Environmental surveillance agents who performing routine entomological surveys at properties in areas where mosquito-borne diseases are endemic play a critical role in vector surveillance by searching and destroying mosquito hotspots as well as collate information on locations with increased infestation. Currently, the process of recording information on paper-based forms is time-consuming and painstaking due to manual effort. The introduction of mobile surveillance applications will therefore improve the process of data collection, timely reporting, and field worker performance. Digital-based surveillance is critical in reporting real-time data; indeed, the real-time capture of data with phones could be used for predictive analytical models to predict mosquito population dynamics, enabling early warning detection of hotspots and thus alerting fieldworker agents into immediate action. This paper describes the development of a cross-platform digital system for improving mosquito surveillance in Brazil. It comprises of two components: a dashboard for managers and a mobile application for health agents. The former enables managers to assign properties to health workers who then survey them for mosquitoes and to monitor the progress of inspection visits in real-time. The latter, which is primarily designed as a data collection tool, enables the environmental surveillance agents to act on their assigned tasks of recording the details of the properties at inspections by filling out digital forms built into the mobile application, as well as details relating to mosquito infestation. The system presented in this paper was co-developed with significant input with environmental agents in two Brazilian cities where it is currently being piloted.

Environmental surveillance was recommended for risk mitigation in a novel oral polio vaccine-2 (nOPV2) clinical trial (M5-ABMG) to monitor excretion, potential circulation, and loss of attenuation of the two nOPV2 candidates. The nOPV2 candidates were developed to address the risk of poliovirus (PV) type 2 circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) as part of the global eradication strategy. Between November 2018 and January 2020, an environmental surveillance study for the clinical trial was conducted in parallel to the M5-ABMG clinical trial at five locations in Panama. The collection sites were located upstream from local treatment plant inlets, to capture the excreta from trial participants and their community. Laboratory analyses of 49 environmental samples were conducted using the two-phase separation method. Novel OPV2 strains were not detected in sewage samples collected during the study period. However, six samples were positive for Sabin-like type 3 PV, two samples were positive for Sabin-like type 1 PV, and non-polio enteroviruses NPEVs were detected in 27 samples. One of the nOPV2 candidates has been granted Emergency Use Listing by the World Health Organization and initial use started in March 2021. This environmental surveillance study provided valuable risk mitigation information to support the Emergency Use Listing application.

SARS-CoV-2, the novel Coronavirus, was first detected in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, and has since spread rapidly, causing millions of deaths worldwide. As in most countries of the world, in Brazil, the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have been catastrophic. Several studies have reported the fecal shedding of SARS-CoV-2 RNA titers from infected symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. Therefore, the quantification of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater can be used to track the virus spread in a population. In this study, samples of untreated wastewater were collected for 44 weeks at five sampling sites in the ABC Region (São Paulo, Brazil), in order to evaluate the SARS-CoV-2 occurrence in the sewerage system. SARS-CoV-2 RNA titers were detected throughout the period, and the concentration ranged from 2.7 to 7.7 log10 genome copies.L-1, with peaks in the last weeks of monitoring. Furthermore, we observed a positive correlation between the viral load in wastewater and the epidemiological/clinical data, with the former preceding the latter by approximately two weeks. The COVID-19 prevalence for each sampling site was estimated via Monte-Carlo simulation using the wastewater viral load. The mean predicted prevalence ranged 0.05 to 0.38%, slightly higher than reported (0.016 ± 0.005%) in the ABC Region for the same period. These results highlight the viability of the wastewater surveillance for COVID-19 infection monitoring in the largest urban agglomeration in South America. This approach can be especially useful for health agencies and public decision-makers in predicting SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks, as well as in local tracing of infection clusters.

The aim of this study was to set up a simple protocol to concentrate SARS-CoV-2 from sewage, which can be implemented in laboratories with minimal equipment resources. The method avoids the need for extensive purification steps and reduces the concentration of potential inhibitors of RT-qPCR contained in sewage. The concentration method consists of a single step, in which a small volume (40 mL) of sewage sample is incubated with polyaluminum chloride (PAC)(0.00045 N Al3+ final concentration). Virus particles adsorbed to the precipitate are collected by low-speed centrifugation, after which the recovered pellet is resuspended with a saline buffer. PAC-concentrated samples are stable for at least one week at 4 °C. Therefore, they may be sent refrigerated to a diagnosis center for RNA extraction and RT-qPCR for SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection if the lab does not have such capabilities. The PAC concentration method produced an average shift of 4.5-units in quantification cycle (Cq) values compared to non-concentrated samples, indicating a 25-fold increase in detection sensitivity. The lower detection limit corresponded approximately to 100 viral copies per ml. Kappa index indicated substantial agreement between PAC and polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation protocols (k = 0.688, CI 0.457-0.919). This low-cost concentration protocol could be useful to aid in the monitoring of community circulation of SARS-CoV-2, especially in low- and middle-income countries, which do not have massive access to support from specialized labs for sewage surveillance.

Haïti is at risk for wild poliovirus (WPV) importation and circulation, as well as vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) emergence. Environmental surveillance (ES) for polioviruses was established in Port au Prince and Gonaïves in 2016. During 2017-2019, initial ES sites were re-evaluated, and ES was expanded into Cap Haïtien and Saint Marc. Wastewater samples and data on weather, hour of collection, and sample temperature and pH were collected every 4 weeks during March 2017-December 2019 (272 sampling events) from 21 sites in Cap Haïtien, Gonaïves, Port au Prince, and Saint Marc. Samples were processed for the detection of polio and non-polio enteroviruses using the two-phase and "Concentration and Filter Elution" methodologies. Polioviruses were serotyped and underwent intra-typic characterization. No WPV or VDPVs were isolated. Sabin-like polioviruses (oral vaccine strain) of serotypes 1 and 3 were sporadically detected. Five of six (83%), one of six (17%), five of six (83%), and two of three (67%) sites evaluated in Cap Haïtien, Gonaïves, Port au Prince, and Saint Marc, respectively, had enterovirus isolation from >50% of sampling events; these results and considerations, such as watershed population size and overlap, influence of sea water, and excessive particulates in samples, were factors in site retention or termination. The evaluation of 21 ES sampling sites in four Haïtian cities led to the termination of 11 sites. Every-four-weekly sampling continues at the remaining 10 sites across the four cities as a core Global Polio Eradication Initiative activity.

Os animais sinantrópicos, dentre eles os roedores, contituem problema de saúde pública em áreas urbanizadas. Foi realizado levantamento das reclamações sobre roedores feitas para o setor de animais sinantrópicos da Diretoria de Vigilância Ambiental doDistrito Federal no intervalo entre 2014 e 2016. As solicitações atingiram o número de 10.232, sendo 4.429 em 2014, 4.368 e 1.429 nos respectivos anos subsequentes. A queda expressiva é decorrente da ausência de telefone no Órgão, se tratando da forma de comunicação mais utilizada para execução das solicitações. Quando relacionados a população das Regiões Administrativas com a quantidade de reclamações, houve relação, mas o mesmo não ocorreu com renda per capita e grau de escolaridade. 6.902 ocorrências foram em residências, justificadas pela população ansiando por desratização gratuita. Houve 11.901 casos confirmados de leptospirose no Brasil nos anos estudados. Destes, 82 ocorreram no DF. Mesmo que maiores os valores utilizados em programas de controle de roedores quando comparados a despesas com zoonoses transmitidas por esses animais, sendo custos diretos médicos, diretos não médicos, indiretos não mensuráveis, o bem-estar da sociedade deve ser destacado.

A survey of rodent complaints made to the synanthropic animal sector of the Federal District Environmental Surveillance Directorate was carried out between 2014 and 2016. The occurrences reached 10,232, with 4,429 in 2014, 4,368 and 1,429 in subsequent years. The significant drop is due to the absence of a telephone in the Agency, being the most used form of communication for executing executions. When related to the population of the Administrative Regions with the number of complaints, there was a relationship, but the same did not occur with per capita income and education level. 6,902 occurrences were in homes, justified by the population yearning for free rat removal. There were 11,901 confirmed cases of leptospirosis in Brazil in the years studied. Of these, 82 occurred in the DF. Even though the values used in rodent control programs are higher when compared to expenses with zoonoses transmitted by these animals, being direct medical costs, non-medical direct costs, non-measurable indirect costs, society's well-being must be highlighted.

To enhance our ability to monitor poliovirus circulation and certify eradication, we evaluated the performance of the bag-mediated filtration system (BMFS) against the two-phase separation (TPS) method for concentrating wastewater samples for poliovirus detection. Sequential samples were collected at two sites in Mexico; one L was collected by grab and ~ 5 L were collected and filtered in situ with the BMFS. In the laboratory, 500 mL collected by grab were concentrated using TPS and the sample contained in the filter of the BMFS was eluted without secondary concentration. Concentrates were tested for the presence of poliovirus and non-poliovirus enterovirus (NPEV) using Global Poliovirus Laboratory Network standard procedures. Between February 16, 2016, and April 18, 2017, 125 pairs of samples were obtained. Collectors spent an average (± standard deviation) of 4.3 ± 2.2 min collecting the TPS sample versus 73.5 ± 30.5 min collecting and filtering the BMFS sample. Laboratory processing required an estimated 5 h for concentration by TPS and 3.5 h for elution. Sabin 1 poliovirus was detected in 37 [30%] samples with the TPS versus 24 [19%] samples with the BMFS (McNemar's mid p value = 0.004). Sabin 3 poliovirus was detected in 59 [47%] versus 49 (39%) samples (p = 0.043), and NPEV was detected in 67 [54%] versus 40 [32%] samples (p < 0.001). The BMFS method without secondary concentration did not perform as well as the TPS method for detecting Sabin poliovirus and NPEV. Further studies are needed to guide the selection of cost-effective environmental surveillance methods for the polio endgame.

Objective: The study's purpose has been to identify the actions to fight the dengue fever vector, and also the way that patients bearing the symptoms have being handled. Methods: This research describes the semiological and pathophysiological aspects of dengue fever through the perception of health professionals, who assisted the patients bearing the symptoms of this disease. Furthermore, this study addresses the perception of endemic diseases combat agents and community health agents regarding the efficiency of vector control measures. Results: The health professionals are working according to the World Health Organization recommendations. The majority of the population contributes to the mosquito breeding sites elimination. The elevated number of closed properties and houses with difficult access has been the greatest obstacle to control the vector. Conclusion: These services need to be aware of the disease trends in order to quickly detect changes in its profile and guide control actions


Objetivo: Identificar as ações adotadas de combate ao vetor e as formas de manejo dos pacientes com sinais e sintomas de alarme para dengue grave. Métodos: Estudo que descreve, na percepção dos profissionais de saúde que atenderam pacientes com suspeita de dengue, os aspectos semiológicos e fisiopatológicos da doença. Apresenta a percepção dos Agentes de Combate a Endemias e Agentes Comunitários de Saúde sobre a eficiência das medidas de controle do vetor. Resultados: Os profissionais de saúde procedem o cuidado conforme orientações da Organização Mundial da Saúde. A maior parte da população contribui com a eliminação dos criadouros do mosquito. Imóveis fechados e o difícil acesso têm sido os principais desafios para o controle do vetor. Conclusão: Esses serviços precisam estar atentos às tendências dessa doença para rapidamente conseguir detectar mudanças em seu perfil e orientar ações de controle


Objetivo: Identificar la satisfacción de los pacientes seguidos en un ambulatorio de Educación para la Salud y evaluar el efecto de las variables antecedentes sobre el nivel de satisfacción de los pacientes. Método: Se trata de un estudio transversal realizado en un ambulatorio la Educación para la Salud. La muestra estuvo constituida por todos los pacientes cardíacos en el ambulatorio (17 pacientes). La satisfacción del paciente se evaluó a través del Instrumento de Satisfacción del Paciente (ISP). Resultados: Todos los pacientes informaron un alto nivel de satisfacción. Los dominios con los puntajes más altos y más bajos fueron el profesional y el educacional, respectivamente. No hubo correlación significativa entre los niveles de satisfacción con cualquiera de las variables antecedentes. Conclusión: Pacientes informaron un alto nivel de satisfacción y no hubo correlación significativa entre variables y los niveles de satisfacción

Although acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance is the "gold standard" for detecting cases of polio, environmental surveillance can provide supplementary information in the absence of paralytic poliomyelitis cases. This study aimed to detect the introduction and/or circulation of wild poliovirus or vaccine-derived polioviruses (VDPV) in wastewater, covering a significant population of Armenia, Colombia, before trivalent oral polio vaccine (OPV) cessation. Between March and September 2015, 24 wastewater samples were collected from eight study sites in eight communes of Armenia, Colombia. Virus detection and characterization were performed using both cell culture (i.e., RD or L20B cells) and RT-PCR. Polioviruses were isolated in 11 (45.8%) of 24 wastewater samples. All isolates were identified as Sabin strains (type 1 = 9, type 3 = 2) by intratypic differentiation. Type 2 poliovirus was not detected in any of the samples. No wild poliovirus or VDPV was detected among the isolates. Non-polio enterovirus was identified in 8.3% (2/24) of the samples. This study revealed the excretion of Sabin poliovirus from OPV-immunized individuals, as well as the absence of VDPV and wild poliovirus in wastewaters of Armenia, Colombia. This confirms that environmental surveillance is an effective method, as an additional support to AFP surveillance, to monitor poliovirus during the OPV-to-IPV (inactivated polio vaccine) transition period.

Environmental surveillance is an effective approach to investigate the circulation of human enteroviruses (EVs) in the population. EVs excreted by patients who present diverse clinical syndromes can remain infectious in the environment for several weeks, and limited data on circulating environmental EVs are available. A 6-year (2009-2014) surveillance study was conducted to detect non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) in the urban sewage of Cordoba city, Argentina. Echovirus 6 (E-6) was the most prevalent (28%), followed by E-14 (17%), E-16 (14%), Coxsackievirus (CV) A9 (11%), E-20 (9%), and CVA24 (6%). Other minority serotypes (E-7, E-13, E-21, E-25, and CVB4) were found, which together represented 14% of the total. In the absence of a systematic EV disease surveillance system, the detection and characterization of sewage-borne NPEVs will help us better understand the changes in EV disease trends and the epidemic background of circulating EVs, which could help interpret the EV trends and warn of future outbreaks in this area.

Noroviruses are a leading cause of epidemic and pandemic acute gastroenteritis (AGE) worldwide, and contaminated food and water are important routes for its transmission. Raw sewage has been used for viral surveillance to monitor the emergence of new norovirus strains with the potential to cause epidemics. In this study, we investigated norovirus occurrence and norovirus RNA levels in 156 samples collected from May 2013 to May 2014, across three different stages (52 samples each) of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We also explored norovirus GII diversity in raw sewage samples by next-sequencing generation (NGS). In addition, we examined norovirus prevalence and molecular epidemiology from acute gastroenteritis cases. Using RT-qPCR, norovirus GI and GII was detected in 38.5% and 96.1% of raw sewage samples, 40.4% and 96.1% of primary effluent samples and 1.9% and 5.8% of final effluent samples, respectively. Norovirus RNA levels varied from 4 to 6.2 log10 genome copies per litre (gc L-1) for GI and from 4.4 to 7.3 log10 gc L-1 for GII. Using MiSeq NGS, we identified 13 norovirus genotypes over the one-year period, with six dominant capsid genotypes, including GII.4, GII.17, GII.5, GII.2, GII.3 and GII.1. GII.4 noroviruses were the most prevalent in wastewater samples (68.5%), and a similar trend was observed in AGE cases (71%). The emergent GII.17 was the second most prevalent genotype (14.3%) identified in the raw sewage samples, however, it was not detected in clinical cases. Due to the high burden of norovirus outbreaks and the lack of vaccine and antiviral drugs, it is essential to understand the genotypic diversity of norovirus at the population level. Complementary data obtained from both clinical and environmental (sewage) samples proved to be an effective strategy to monitor the circulation and emergence of norovirus epidemic genotypes.

Resumo Este artigo analisa, em uma perspectiva biopolítica, alguns aspectos da temática ambiental na Vigilância em Saúde, mais especificamente na área de Vigilância Ambiental. Tal análise nos remete a noções de biopolítica e governamentalidade elaboradas por Michel Foucault que servem de chaves conceituais para a discussão. Para produzir a análise bibliográfica, utilizamos os principais documentos técnicos e legislações da área de Vigilância Ambiental, Vigilância Ambiental em Saúde e Vigilância em Saúde Ambiental, três denominações utilizadas para o objeto de estudo durante o seu desenvolvimento. Ao separar os documentos, efetuamos a comparação e crítica dos mesmos, atentos aos aspectos biopolíticos explícitos ou implícitos. A pesquisa é parte de uma tese de doutorado que construiu uma genealogia da área da Vigilância Ambiental. No trajeto histórico da formação da Vigilância Ambiental, aspectos biopolíticos foram se delineando na construção das ações de saúde da área. Primeiro, descrevemos brevemente a formação da área; posteriormente, realizamos uma leitura de alguns aspectos da biopolítica que parece estar implícita nas práticas de saúde que vêm caracterizando a Vigilância Ambiental, destacando uma visão das suas implicações na prática do serviço.


Abstract This article analyzes, from a biopolitical perspective, some aspects of environmental theme in Health Surveillance, more specifically in the area of Environmental Surveillance. This analysis brings us notions of biopolitics and governmentality elaborated by Michel Foucault that serve as conceptual keys for the discussion. To produce the bibliographic analysis, we used the main technical documents and legislation of the Environmental Surveillance, Environmental Health Surveillance and Environmental Health Surveillance, three denominations used for the object of study during its development. In separating the documents, we compare and critique them, paying attention to explicit or implicit biopolitical aspects. The research is part of a doctoral thesis that built a genealogy of Environmental Surveillance. In the historical course of the formation of Environmental Surveillance, biopolitical aspects were outlined in the construction of health actions in the area. First, we briefly describe the formation of the area; then we read some aspects of biopolitics that seem to be implicit in the health practices that have characterized Environmental Surveillance, highlighting a view of its implications for service practice.

Introdução: A formação e qualificação dos recursos humanos em saúde afetam, diretamente, a qualidade dos serviços ofertados à coletividade. Objetivo: Caracterizar o perfil de formação dos coordenadores de Vigilância em Saúde do interior de Pernambuco e identificar as principais fragilidades e potencialidades no cotidiano dos processos de trabalho. Método: A produção de informações ocorreu por meio de entrevista com auxílio de instrumento semiestruturado. Resultados: Os resultados revelaram uma variedade de fragilidades nos recursos humanos da Vigilância em Saúde na região, entre elas, a deficiência na formação acadêmica dos trabalhadores, condições de trabalho deficientes e ausência de recursos financeiros. Por outro lado, como ponto positivo, foi identificada uma grande oferta de ações de Educação Permanente em Saúde. Conclusões: Sugere-se aos gestores em saúde, a busca por alternativas que atendam à situação dos profissionais atualmente inseridos no sistema e minimizem os efeitos da formação deficiente, assim como a necessidade de discussões para revisão das Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais dos cursos da área da saúde, fomentando a formação de profissionais para a promoção em saúde, além de distribuição adequada e melhorias na alocação de recursos para a Vigilância em Saúde.


Introduction: The professional qualification of human resources in health affects directly the quality of the services offered to the community. Objective: This study aimed to characterize the formation of managers of health surveillance in the inland of Pernambuco State, Brazil and identify the main fragilities and potentialities in the daily prosses of work. Method: The data was collected by interview using a semi structured questionnaire. Results: The results revealed a variety of problems in human resources in health surveillance in the region, like the absence or incompatible education level, poorly work conditions and precarious financial resources. On the other hand, some positive points, was identified a good offer in actions of permanent education in health. Conclusions: Should find alternatives that meet the situation of professionals into the system and minimize the effects of lack of training and inadequate training, as well as the necessity to discuss the review of the national curricular guidelines of health sciences courses, promoting educational institutions to train professionals for health surveillance, as well promote the better distribution of financial resources.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are associated with cases of water and foodborne outbreaks in the world. This study included 50 samples of surface raw water collected from two watersheds in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The isolation of (oo)cysts was performed in accordance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's methods 1623 and genotypic characterization and quantification were carried out by Nested PCR and qPCR assays based on 18S rRNA and gdh genes, respectively. U.S. EPA 1623 method showed the presence of (oo)cysts in 40% ([Formula: see text] = 0.10 oocysts/L) and 100% ([Formula: see text] = 7.6 cysts/L) of samples from São Lourenço River, respectively, and 24% ([Formula: see text] = 0.8 oocysts/L) and 60% ([Formula: see text] = 1.64 cysts/L) of Guarapiranga Reservoir, respectively. The qPCR assay detected C. hominis/parvum in 52% (0.06 to 1.85 oocysts/L) of São Lourenço River and 64% (0.09 to 1.4 oocysts/L) of Guarapiranga Reservoir samples. Presence/absence test for Giardia intestinalis was positive in 92% of São Lourenço River and 8% of Guarapiranga Reservoir samples. The assemblage A was detected in 16% (0.58 to 2.67 cysts/L) in São Lourenço River and no positive samples were obtained for assemblage B in both water bodies. The characterization of anthroponotic species C. parvum/hominis, G. intestinalis, and assemblage A was valuable in the investigation of possible sources of contamination in the watersheds studied confirming the need of expanding environmental monitoring measures for protection of these water sources in our country.

Environmental surveillance is an effective approach to investigate the circulation of human enteroviruses in the population. Enteroviruses E14, CVA9, E-6, E16, E20, E25, E13, and CVA24 were detected in sewage and a watercourse in central Argentina. E14 was the most frequent serotype and was found for the first time in environmental samples in our region. Phylogenetic and coalescence analyses showed at least two recent introduction events.
