Paddles and fins are used in swimmers training with different objectives (e.g., increase propulsive areas of hands and feet, improve the feeling of water flow). These artificial modifications of the stroke might be viewed as external constraints of the stroke task, both will either disturb or facilitate swimming modalities, so the coaches should manipulate its use to extract benefits for performance. This study seeks to investigate the precise effects of wearing either paddles (PAD) or fins (FINS) vs. a no-equipment (NE) trial in three all-out front crawl exercises on swimmer kinematics, arm stroke efficiency (ηp), upper-limbs coordination patterns (Index of Coordination, IdC), and estimated energy cost (C). Eleven regional to national-level male swimmers participated in the study (age: 25.8 ± 5.5 years, body mass: 75.2 ± 5.5 kg, height: 177 ± 6.5 cm) and were recorded from both sides of the swimming pool to collect all variables. Repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc were used to compare the variables. Effects sizes were calculated. Time to cover the distance and velocity were higher in FINS swimming, with larger values of stroke length (SL) and lower kick amplitude in comparison to the other trials (PAD and NE). The use of FINS also modified the stroke phases durations by presenting significant lower propulsion time during the stroke in comparison to PAD or NE. Values of IdC were lower (IdC < -1%, so catch-up pattern of coordination) for FINS in comparison to NE. In terms of ηp, using PAD or FINS demonstrate higher arm stroke efficiency than swimming without equipment. Finally, C was significantly higher in FINS swimming in comparison to NE and PAD. From the present results, it should be noted that the use of equipment such as fins deeply modify the structure of the swimming stroke (from the performance-related parameters through the kinematics of both upper and lower limbs to the stroke efficiency and coordination pattern). So, using equipment should be appropriately scaled by the coaches to the objectives of the training session in swimming, and in emergent sports such as "SwimRun", paddles and fins must be viewed as tools to achieve higher velocities to cover a given distance.

In many countries, there is an energy pricing policy that varies according to the time-of-use. In this context, it is financially advantageous for the industries to plan their production considering this policy. This article introduces a new bi-objective unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times, in which the objectives are to minimize the makespan and the total energy cost. We propose a mixed-integer linear programming formulation based on the weighted sum method to obtain the Pareto front. We also developed an NSGA-II method to address large instances of the problem since the formulation cannot solve it in an acceptable computational time for decision-making. The results showed that the proposed NSGA-II is able to find a good approximation for the Pareto front when compared with the weighted sum method in small instances. Besides, in large instances, NSGA-II outperforms, with 95% confidence level, the MOGA and NSGA-I multi-objective techniques concerning the hypervolume and hierarchical cluster counting metrics. Thus, the proposed algorithm finds non-dominated solutions with good convergence, diversity, uniformity, and amplitude.

While some genetically modified (GM) plants have been targeted to confer tolerance to abiotic stressors, transgenes are impacted by abiotic stressors, causing adverse effects on plant physiology and yield. However, routine safety analyses do not assess the response of GM plants under different environmental stress conditions. In the context of climate change, the combination of abiotic stressors is a reality in agroecosystems. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the metabolic cost by assessing the proteomic profiles of GM soybean varieties under glyphosate spraying and water deficit conditions compared to their non-transgenic conventional counterparts. We found evidence of cumulative adverse effects that resulted in the reduction of enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, along with the expression of amino acids and nitrogen metabolic enzymes. Ribosomal metabolism was significantly enriched, particularly the protein families associated with ribosomal complexes L5 and L18. The interaction network map showed that the affected module representing the ribosome pathway interacts strongly with other important proteins, such as the chloro-plastic gamma ATP synthase subunit. Combined, these findings provide clear evidence for increasing the metabolic costs of GM soybean plants in response to the accumulation of stress factors. First, alterations in the ribosome pathway indicate that the GM plant itself carries a metabolic burden associated with the biosynthesis of proteins as effects of genetic transformation. GM plants also showed an imbalance in energy demand and production under controlled conditions, which was increased under drought conditions. Identifying the consequences of altered metabolism related to the interaction between plant transgene stress responses allows us to understand the possible effects on the ecology and evolution of plants in the medium and long term and the potential interactions with other organisms when these organisms are released in the environment.

The primary aim of this study was to compare the measured oxygen consumption (Measured-VO2) in a simulated futsal game (S-Game) with the estimated oxygen consumption (Estimated-VO2) through a regression equation between heart rate (HR) and oxygen consumption (VO2) (HR-VO2) in treadmill running, and a secondary aim was to calculate the total energy expenditure (EE) in S-Game. Ten professional players (22.20 ± 3.22 years) were evaluated. HR-VO2 was determined individually in the continuous test on the treadmill (ContTest). The Measured-VO2 in S-Game was compared with the Estimated-VO2 in the ContTest. Alactic and lactic pathways were estimated by VO2. The Estimated-VO2 presented no statistically significant difference with the Measured-VO2, using the paired t-test (p = 0.38). However, the correlation between Estimated- and Measured-VO2 was very weak (r = -0.05), and it presented poor agreement (concordance correlation coefficient = -0.04). In addition, a Bland-Altman plot presented bias of -2.8 ml/kg/min and individual difference as large as 19 ml/kg/min. The HR-VO2 determined by the ContTest was not a good individual predictor of VO2. The high intensity and intermittent nature of the futsal game possibly caused dissociation in the HR-VO2 relationship. ContTest is not recommended for estimating VO2 and calculating individual EE in the futsal game. This is recommended only for the group mean. The total EE in S-Game was 13.10 ± 1.25 kcal.min-1 (10.81 ± 1.57 metabolic equivalents). The contributions from the metabolic pathways were as follows: aerobic (93%), alactic (5%), and lactic (2%).

The present systematic review examined the effect of exercise intensity (high-intensity interval exercise [HIIE] vs. moderate-intensity continuous exercise [MICE] vs. sprint interval exercise [SIE]) on excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). Twenty-two studies were included in the final evaluation. The retrieved investigations were split into studies that analysed short-duration (until 3 h) and long-duration (more than 3 h) EPOC. Studies that subtracted the baseline energy expenditure (EE) were analysed separately from those that did not. Most short-duration evaluations that subtracted baseline EE reported higher EPOC for HIIE (average of ~136 kJ) compared with MICE (average of ~101 kJ) and higher values for SIE (average of ~241 kJ) compared with MICE (average of ~151 kJ). The long-duration evaluations resulted in greater EPOC for HIIE (average of ~289 kJ) compared with MICE (average of ~159 kJ), while no studies comparing SIE versus MICE provided appropriate values. EE from EPOC seems to be greater following HIIE and SIE compared with MICE, and long-duration evaluations seem to present higher values than short-duration evaluations. Additionally, more standardized methodologies are needed in order to determine the effective EPOC time following these protocols.

RESUMO Ante o crescimento populacional urbano e a importância da água como recurso natural limitado, verifica-se a necessidade de implementar técnicas com a finalidade de reduzir os custos operacionais dos sistemas de distribuição de água e garantir abastecimento adequado. A otimização da operação de bombas pode ser utilizada com o propósito de atender às demandas de consumo com menor custo energético, além de maximizar a confiabilidade hidráulica. Neste trabalho, um modelo híbrido de otimização/simulação foi desenvolvido tendo como suporte os algoritmos genéticos multiobjetivo e o simulador hidráulico EPANET. O método Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA II) foi utilizado para a otimização da operação de bombas de rotação variável, ou seja, as variáveis de decisão do problema foram as rotações das bombas para cada hora ao longo do dia. Uma modificação do simulador hidráulico EPANET original, que não computa corretamente o rendimento de bombas de rotação variável, foi empregada para que as potências de cada bomba e, consequentemente, o custo da energia elétrica fossem calculados corretamente. Conjuntos de soluções não dominadas (frente Pareto) foram obtidos considerando-se, primeiramente, a penalidade de pressão negativa nos nós e, posteriormente, as penalidades de pressão negativa nos nós e o fechamento/desligamento de tubos e/ou bombas. Aplicou-se o método à rede hipotética denominada Anytown, e custos menores, considerando tarifas brasileiras, foram obtidos.


ABSTRACT Faced with the urban population growth and the importance of water as a limited natural resource, there is a need to implement techniques to reduce the operational costs of water distribution systems and ensure adequate supply. The optimization of pump operation can be used to meet the demands of consumption with a lower energy cost, in addition to maximizing hydraulic reliability. In this work, a hybrid optimization/simulation model was developed based on the multiobjective genetic algorithms and the EPANET hydraulic simulator. The NSGA II (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II) method was used to optimize the operation of variable rotation pumps, that is, the decision variables of the problem were the rotation of the pumps for each hour throughout the day. A modification of the original EPANET hydraulic simulator, which does not correctly compute the efficiency of variable-speed pumps, was employed so that the power of each pump, and consequently the cost of electric power, was calculated correctly. Non-dominated solution sets (Pareto Front) were obtained considering first the negative pressure penalty at the nodes and, subsequently, the negative pressure penalties at the nodes and the closure/shutdown of tubes and/or pumps. The method has been applied in the hypothetical network called ANYTOWN and lower energy costs were obtained considering Brazilian energy tariffs.

BACKGROUND: The percentage of sustained maximal oxygen uptake and the running economy are important factors that determine the running success of endurance athletes. Running economy is defined as the oxygen uptake required to run at a given speed and depends on metabolic, cardiorespiratory, biomechanical, neuromuscular, and anthropometric factors. With regard to anthropometric characteristics, total body mass seems to be a crucial factor for the running economy. Moreover, neuromuscular components, especially knee muscular strength and the strength balance ratio, also seem to be critical for the running economy. In addition to knee muscle strength, hip muscle strength is also an important contributor to running performance on level or hilly ground. However, the relationship between running economy and the hip muscles is unknown. Thus the aim of the present study was to verify whether hip flexor and extensor isokinetic peak torque, the isokinetic strength balance ratio, total body mass and fat free mass were associated with running economy in both sexes and to compare sex differences in physical fitness and isokinetic strength characteristics. METHODS: A total of 24 male (31.0 ± 7.7 years, 176.2 ± 7.3 cm, and 70.4 ± 8.4 kg) and 15 female (31.3 ± 6.7 years, 162.9 ± 3.9 cm, and 56.0 ± 5.3 kg) recreationally-trained endurance runners were recruited. Maximal oxygen uptake, running economy, conventional (concentric flexors-to-concentric extensors) and functional (concentric flexors-to-eccentric extensors) hip isokinetic strength balance ratios, peak torque of the hip flexor and extensor muscles, total body mass, and fat-free mass were measured. Running economy was assessed on two separate days by means of the energy running cost (Ec) using a motorized treadmill at 10.0 and 12.0 km h-1 (3% gradient) and 11.0 and 14.0 km h-1 (1% gradient). RESULTS: The functional balance ratio was significantly and negatively associated with Ec at 11.0 (r =  - 0.43, P = 0.04) and 12.0 km h-1 (r =  - 0.65, P = 0.04) when using a 3% gradient in male runners. Considering muscular strength, male runners only showed a significant relationship between Ec (assessed at 12 km h-1 and a 3% gradient) and peak torque for extensor muscle eccentric action (r = 0.72, P = 0.04). For female runners, only peak torque relative to total body mass for extensor muscles (180° s-1) was positively associated with Ec when assessed at 10 km h-1 using a 3% gradient (r = 0.59, P = 0.03). No significant relationships were found between Ec and total body mass or fat-free mass. DISCUSSION: Given that the functional balance ratio was associated with a better Ec, coaches and athletes should consider implementing a specific strengthening program for hip flexor muscles to increase the functional ratio.

Resumo O estudo teve por objetivo analisar o efeito da adição do equivalente energético do lactato sanguíneo com a medida de VO2 durante a corrida em esteira horizontal (0%) e inclinada (10,5%), como forma de estimativa do custo energético da corrida. Treze corredores de meia e longa distância (idade 28,1 ± 4,2 anos; estatura 1,75 ± 0,07 m; massa corporal 65,2 ± 4,9 kg; VO2max 70,3 ± 4,9 ml·kg-1·min-1) cumpriram dois testes em esteira rolante (0% e 10,5%) que incluíram vários estágios em intensidade constante. Foram calculadas para cada atleta as regressões VO2-velocidade, bem como regressões alternativas com a adição de um equivalente energético de 3 ml O2 Eq·kg-1·mM [La-] às medições de VO2. Não se verificou interação significativa entre a adição do equivalente do lactato e a inclinação da esteira. A ANOVA indicou um efeito significativo da adição do equivalente do lactato na inclinação da reta de regressão e na estimativa do custo energético. Os tamanhos do efeito obtidos indicam que este efeito é mais forte na corrida horizontal. Estes resultados sugerem que em testes laboratoriais com corredores treinados se deverá considerar a adição dos valores de VO2 com os equivalentes energéticos do lactato.(AU)


Abstract This study aimed to analyze the influence of adding blood lactate ([La-]) energy equivalent (Eq) to the VO2 measurements during running exercise at different grades (0% and 10.5%) in order to estimate energy cost of running. Thirteen male highly-trained middle- and long-distance runners (age 28.1 ± 4.2 years; stature 1.75 ± 0.07 m; body mass 65.2 ± 4.9 kg; and maximal oxygen uptake 70.3 ± 4.9 ml·kg-1·min-1) volunteered after medical approval and performed two treadmill tests (0% and 10.5% grade) which included several bouts at a constant speed. Individual VO2-speed regressions were determined for each subject and alternative regressions were established by adding an energy equivalent of 3 ml O2 Eq·kg-1·mM [La-] to the mean VO2 values. No significant interaction between [La-] O2 equivalent inclusion and grade running was found. Results of within-subjects ANOVAs indicated a significant effect of [La-] inclusion in the regression slope and in the estimated energy cost of running at both level and grade running. However, the obtained effect sizes suggest that this effect is considerably higher at level compared with grade running. These findings indicate that the inclusion of [La-] measurements in VO2-intensity regression estimates at sub maximal running should be considered when testing highly trained runners on the treadmill.(AU)

For this report, we analyzed protein secondary structures in relation to the statistics of three nucleotide codon positions. The purpose of this investigation was to find which properties of the ribosome, tRNA or protein level, could explain the purine bias (Rrr) as it is observed in coding DNA. We found that the Rrr pattern is the consequence of a regularity (the codon structure) resulting from physicochemical constraints on proteins and thermodynamic constraints on ribosomal machinery. The physicochemical constraints on proteins mainly come from the hydropathy and molecular weight (MW) of secondary structures as well as the energy cost of amino acid synthesis. These constraints appear through a network of statistical correlations, such as (i) the cost of amino acid synthesis, which is in favor of a higher level of guanine in the first codon position, (ii) the constructive contribution of hydropathy alternation in proteins, (iii) the spatial organization of secondary structure in proteins according to solvent accessibility, (iv) the spatial organization of secondary structure according to amino acid hydropathy, (v) the statistical correlation of MW with protein secondary structures and their overall hydropathy, (vi) the statistical correlation of thymine in the second codon position with hydropathy and the energy cost of amino acid synthesis, and (vii) the statistical correlation of adenine in the second codon position with amino acid complexity and the MW of secondary protein structures. Amino acid physicochemical properties and functional constraints on proteins constitute a code that is translated into a purine bias within the coding DNA via tRNAs. In that sense, the Rrr pattern within coding DNA is the effect of information transfer on nucleotide composition from protein to DNA by selection according to the codon positions. Thus, coding DNA structure and ribosomal machinery co-evolved to minimize the energy cost of protein coding given the functional constraints on proteins.

Será que a vida em grupo acarreta uma maior atividade individual, e consequentemente, um maior gasto energético? Para responder a essa questão, hipotetizou-se que exista uma maior produção de CO2, quando se aumenta o tamanho do grupo de formigas operárias e, consequentemente, um maior custo energético ao indivíduo quando está em grupo. Assim, grupos de 10, 20, 30, 40 e 50 operárias foram fechados em uma câmara hermética, durante 24 horas. Posteriormente, efetuou-se a medição das concentrações de CO2 nos recipientes respirométricos. Ao contrário do esperado, a produção de CO2, e consequentemente, o gasto energético individual, não diferiram estatisticamente quando se aumentou o tamanho do grupo de operárias. Dessa forma, refuta-se a hipótese de que o tamanho do grupo conduz a um maior custo energético individual, haja vista a maior interação entre os indivíduos. O estudo com operárias de Atta sexdens rubropilosa evidenciou que o tamanho do grupo não conduz a um maior custo energético individual, sendo a produção de CO2 e, consequentemente, o gasto energético individual similar, independente do tamanho do grupo.

A dificuldade de cálculo do custo energético durante a maioria das atividades físicas reside no fato da solicitação energética ser mista. Importa saber identificar em que condição é possível medir ou estimar o custo energético e em que condição tal não é possível. Existe uma utilização de diferentes termos associados a esta temática como, por exemplo, gasto energético, gasto calórico, dispêndio energético, ou custo energético. O objetivo deste artigo foi recordar os métodos mais populares de quantificação do custo energético e propor um maior rigor na nomenclatura a usar no ensino e investigação. Parece pacífica a utilização do O2 expirado como quantificador da energia aeróbia. Quanto à energia anaeróbia láctica, devem prosseguir estudos usando o défice de oxigénio acumulado ou o equivalente energético de lactato. O termo "gasto energético" deverá ser reservado a situações em que o exercício é quase exclusivamente aeróbio e em que é possível medir diretamente as trocas gasosas durante o esforço. Em todas as restantes situações, deverá ser usado preferencialmente o termo "custo energético", porquanto o mesmo pode ser estimado, mas não medido diretamente. Quando usado o termo "custo energético" o mesmo deve ser complementado com a identificação se tratamos da fração aeróbia, da fração anaeróbia ou de ambas.


The difficulty involved in the calculation of the energy cost during most of the physical activities is related to the mixed nature of the energy elicited. Therefore, it is important to know under which exercise conditions it is possible to perform such measurements and under which conditions it is not. Several terms are often associated with this line of research, such as: energy expenditure, caloric expenditure, or energy cost. The objectives of the present study were to review the methods typically used to assess energy cost and to suggest a more precise nomenclature when teaching or conducting research on these theme. The use of expired O2 to quantify aerobic energy seems undisputable. As to anaerobic lactic energy, more studies are required, using both blood lactate energy equivalent values and accumulated oxygen deficit. The term energy expenditure should be used only when energy release is almost fully aerobic and when direct O2 measurement can be performed during exercise. In every other exercise conditions, the term energy cost is more suitable, as it cannot be directly assessed. Whenever energy cost is mentioned, it should be accompanied by the identification of whether aerobic fraction, anaerobic fraction, or total energy cost is considered.

RESUMO

O objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar o comportamento do consumo de oxigênio (VO2) em resposta a uma sessão de treinamento de força (TF) com objetivo em hipertrofia muscular (HP) com uma sessão com objetivo em resistência muscular localizada (RML). Nove indivíduos do sexo masculino (23,1 ± 2,1 anos) foram recrutados para este estudo. A força muscular dinâmica foi mensurada através do teste de 1RM. O VO2 foi coletado durante o repouso e 10 minutos de recuperação com um analisador de gases (CPX/D). As sessões foram compostas por um exercício de membros superiores (supino) e um de membros inferiores (agachamento), e compreenderam a execução de três séries de 6-8 repetições máximas (RM) a 80 por cento de 1RM para HP e 15-20 RM a 55 por cento de 1RM para RML. Foram analisados os dados de VO2 pós-exercício (EPOC), gasto energético (GE) de recuperação e constante de tempo de VO2 (CT). Foi observado que ambas sessões provocaram comportamento significativamente elevado de VO2 durante os 10min de recuperação em relação aos valores de repouso. Não houve diferenças significativas entre os valores de EPOC (litros) para HP (2,21 ± 0,54) e RML (2,60 ± 0,44), GE (kcal) para HP (10,36 ± 2,53) e RML (12,18 ± 2,04) e CT (segundos) para HP (56 ± 7) e RML (57 ± 6) (p > 0,05). Esses resultados demonstraram que uma sessão de TF com objetivo em RML é capaz de causar distúrbios metabólicos semelhantes àqueles provocados por uma sessão de HP, mesmo que seja em menor intensidade relativa a carga máxima.


The purpose of the present study was to compare the oxygen uptake ( VO2) behavior in response to a resistance exercise (RE) session with aim of hypertrophy (HP) with another session with aim of local muscular endurance (LME). Nine young men (23.1± 2.1 years) voluntarily participated in the present study. Dynamic muscle strength was measured with one repetition maximum test (1RM). O VO2 was collected at rest and ten minutes after exercise with a gas analyzer (CPX/D). The RE protocols were composed of one upper body exercise (bench press) and one lower body exercise (squat) with the execution of 3 sets of 6-8 maximum repetitions (RM) with 80 percent of 1RM in HP session and 3 sets of 15-20 RM with 55 percent of 1 RM in LME session. Exercise post oxygen consumption (EPOC), energy cost (EC) and time constant (TC) of VO2 were analyzed. The results showed that both RE sessions provoked significant elevated VO2 after RE in comparison to rest values. There were no differences between groups in the EPOC (l) (HP: 2.21 ± 0.54 vs. LME: 2.60 ± 0.44), EC (Kcal) (HP: 10.36 ± 2.53 vs LME: 12.18 ± 2.04) and TC of VO2 (s) (HP: 56 ± 7 vs. LME: 57 ± 6) (p>0.05). These results demonstrated that a RE session with the aim of LME gain is capable of causing similar metabolic impact to the RE session with HP aim, even if it is performed at lower intensity concerning maximal load.

Se estudiaron 4 varones y 5 hembras del equipo cubano de patinaje velocidad para estimar su estado nutricional, GE y establecer recomendaciones nutricionales. U n microciclo tipo de las etapas de preparación general (G) y especial (E) constituyó el marco de medición. El GE se determinó mediante método factorial. Se realizó estadística inferencial para considerar diferencias entre variables por sexo y etapas para p ≤ 0,05. Para calcular las recomendaciones nutricionales se estimó el NAF. Se observaron características morfológicas similares a las reportadas en patinadores colombianos, así como un IMC adecuado. El GE por entrenamiento fue significativamente diferente en las dos etapas y el GET fue superior en la de PG. Energéticamente, se observó tendencia a valores superiores en los hombres en todos los indicadores, excepto para las actividades discrecionales durante la etapa de PE y el NAF de ambas y las recomendaciones dependieron de la etapa de preparación de estos patinadores.


Four and five female and male speed roller skaters of Cuban team were studied for nutritional status and energy cost estimation even as energy recommendations. A microcycle type of general (G) and special (S) training phases was the frame for measuring. EC was determined by factorial method. Inferential statistics for estimating differences between variables by sex and phases of training was for p ≤ 0,05. In order to make energy recommendations a PAL was also estimated. Morphological characteristics were similar to those reported in Colombian roller skaters and BMI was adequate. Sport training energy cost was significantly different in both phases and TEC was higher in G. It was observed that male skaters showed a trend to have higher values for all variables with the exception of discretionary activities in S and PAL for both phases. Energy recommendations depended on training phase of speed roller skaters.

A dependência do petróleo e a poluição gerada pelo óleo diesel são as grandes desvantagens do uso deste combustível, o que vem estimulando a busca por fontes energéticas alternativas. Biodiesel é o combustível derivado de óleos vegetais ou de gordura animal que pode substituir total ou parcialmente o óleo diesel derivado de petróleo. Pode ser obtido por diferentes processos, como craqueamento, transesterificação ou esterificação, tendo glicerina como subproduto. A transesterificação é o método estimulado pelo Programa Nacional de Produção e Uso de Biodiesel no Brasil, consistindo na reação química de triglicerídios com álcoois (metanol ou etanol) na presença de um catalisador (NaOH). O objetivo desta revisão é discutir as vantagens e as desvantagens que a produção de biodiesel traz para a agricultura e o ambiente e a competição que pode ocorrer por recursos naturais entre a produção de alimentos e a de combustível. O biodiesel, além de ser obtido de fontes renováveis, tem como vantagens a menor emissão de gases poluentes e a menor persistência no solo. Entretanto, o custo de produção atualmente é maior e o balanço energético, apesar de variar com o sistema de produção utilizado, é menos favorável em relação ao óleo diesel. A maior demanda por grãos oleaginosos promoverá a utilização de mais espécies nos sistemas de produção em todo o país. Na Região Sul, tem sido dado maior enfoque às culturas da soja, girassol, canola e mamona. Esta última, incentivada em regiões de baixa disponibilidade hídrica, está sendo melhorada geneticamente para produção de biocombustível. Tem como desvantagem a presença de ricina, substância tóxica ao homem e que pode contaminar o ambiente. O girassol e a canola produzem óleos "nobres" para alimentação humana, com altos teores de ácidos graxos poliinsaturados. O biodiesel constitui-se em uma boa alternativa para a substituição parcial ou total do óleo diesel, mas as vantagens ambientais e agrícolas dependem de estudos pendentes em vários elos da cadeia produtiva.


The petroleum dependence and the pollution generated by its use are the big disadvantages of this fuel, which demand look for another source of energy. Biodiesel is the fuel obtained from vegetables oils or animal fat, which can substitute petroleum diesel, total or partially. Three processes are possible to obtain biodiesel: cracking, tranesterfication or esterification, having glycerin as a derivate. The Brazilian National Program for Production and Use of Biodiesel stimulates the transesterification process, which is the chemical reaction of the triglycerides with alcohols (methanol or ethanol) using a catalyst (NaOH). The goal of this revision was to discuss the advantages and disadvantages that biodiesel production can bring for agriculture and environmental and the competition that could occur for natural resources between food and fuel production. The biodiesel obtained from renewable sources has as advantages the lower pollutant it gases emission and lower persistence in the soil. However, it has a higher cost production than petroleum diesel and the energy balance is less favourable, although it can vary with the system production used. The higher demand for oleaginous grains will increase the number of species used in crop production. In the south of Brazil, the species more stimulated are soybean, sunflower, canola and castor plant. Castor, that is an alternative for drought regions, is being genetically modified for fuel production, but it has the big disadvantage of ricin production, which is very poisonous for human and environment. Sunflower produces a very healthy oil for human use, with high levels of fat poliinsaturated acids. Biodiesel is a good alternative to substitute partial or totally petroleum diesel, but the environmental and agricultural advantages depend on studies in every link of its production chain.
