Scale-free brain activity, linked with learning, the integration of different time scales, and the formation of mental models, is correlated with a metastable cognitive basis. The spectral slope, a key aspect of scale-free dynamics, was proposed as a potential indicator to distinguish between different sleep stages. Studies suggest that brain networks maintain a consistent scale-free structure across wakefulness, anesthesia, and recovery. Although differences in anesthetic sensitivity between the sexes are recognized, these variations are not evident in clinical electroencephalographic recordings of the cortex. Recently, changes in the slope of the power law exponent of neural activity were found to correlate with changes in Rényi entropy, an extended concept of Shannon's information entropy. These findings establish quantifiers as a promising tool for the study of scale-free dynamics in the brain. Our study presents a novel visual representation called the Rényi entropy-complexity causality space, which encapsulates complexity, permutation entropy, and the Rényi parameter q. The main goal of this study is to define this space for classical dynamical systems within theoretical bounds. In addition, the study aims to investigate how well different time series mimicking scale-free activity can be discriminated. Finally, this tool is used to detect dynamic features in intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) signals. To achieve these goals, the study implementse the Bandt and Pompe method for ordinal patterns. In this process, each signal is associated with a probability distribution, and the causal measures of Rényi entropy and complexity are computed based on the parameter q. This method is a valuable tool for analyzing simulated time series. It effectively distinguishes elements of correlated noise and provides a straightforward means of examining differences in behaviors, characteristics, and classifications. For the iEEG experimental data, the REM state showed a greater number of significant sex-based differences, while the supramarginal gyrus region showed the most variation across different modes and analyzes. Exploring scale-free brain activity with this framework could provide valuable insights into cognition and neurological disorders. The results may have implications for understanding differences in brain function between the sexes and their possible relevance to neurological disorders.

Although studies on non-tuberculous mycobacteria have increased in recent years because they cause a considerable proportion of infections, their cellulolytic system is still poorly studied. This study presents a characterization of the cellulolytic activities of environmental mycobacterial isolates derived from soil and water samples from the central region of Argentina, aimed to evaluate the conservation of the mechanism for the degradation of cellulose in this group of bacteria. The molecular and genomic identification revealed identity with Mycolicibacterium septicum. The endoglucanase and total cellulase activities were assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively and the optimal enzymatic conditions were characterized. A specific protein of around 56 kDa with cellulolytic activity was detected in a zymogram. Protein sequences possibly arising from a cellulase were identified by mass spectrometry-based shotgun proteomics. Results showed that M. septicum encodes for cellulose- and hemicellulose-related degrading enzymes, including at least an active ß-1,4 endoglucanase enzyme that could be useful to improve its survival in the environment. Given the important health issues related to mycobacteria, the results of the present study may contribute to the knowledge of their cellulolytic system, which could be important for their ability to survive in many different types of environments.

In this study, the genetic differences and clinical impact of the carbapenemase-encoding genes among the community and healthcare-acquired infections were assessed. This retrospective, multicenter cohort study was conducted in Colombia and included patients infected with carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative rods between 2017 and 2021. Carbapenem resistance was identified by Vitek, and carbapenemase-encoding genes were identified by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to classify the alleles and sequence types (STs). Descriptive statistics were used to determine the association of any pathogen or gene with clinical outcomes. A total of 248 patients were included, of which only 0.8% (2/248) had community-acquired infections. Regarding the identified bacteria, the most prevalent pathogens were Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. In the WGS analysis, 228 isolates passed all the quality criteria and were analyzed. The principal carbapenemase-encoding gene was blaKPC, specifically blaKPC-2 [38.6% (88/228)] and blaKPC-3 [36.4% (83/228)]. These were frequently detected in co-concurrence with blaVIM-2 and blaNDM-1 in healthcare-acquired infections. Notably, the only identified allele among community-acquired infections was blaKPC-3 [50.0% (1/2)]. In reference to the STs, 78 were identified, of which Pseudomonas aeruginosa ST111 was mainly related to blaKPC-3. Klebsiella pneumoniae ST512, ST258, ST14, and ST1082 were exclusively associated with blaKPC-3. Finally, no particular carbapenemase-encoding gene was associated with worse clinical outcomes. The most identified genes in carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative rods were blaKPC-2 and blaKPC-3, both related to gene co-occurrence and diverse STs in the healthcare environment. Patients had several systemic complications and poor clinical outcomes that were not associated with a particular gene.IMPORTANCEAntimicrobial resistance is a pandemic and a worldwide public health problem, especially carbapenem resistance in low- and middle-income countries. Limited data regarding the molecular characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients infected with these bacteria are available. Thus, our study described the carbapenemase-encoding genes among community- and healthcare-acquired infections. Notably, the co-occurrence of carbapenemase-encoding genes was frequently identified. We also found 78 distinct sequence types, of which two were novel Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which could represent challenges in treating these infections. Our study shows that in low and middle-income countries, such as Colombia, the burden of carbapenem resistance in Gram-negative rods is a concern for public health, and regardless of the allele, these infections are associated with poor clinical outcomes. Thus, studies assessing local epidemiology, prevention strategies (including trials), and underpinning genetic mechanisms are urgently needed, especially in low and middle-income countries.

Bacillus cereus sensu stricto (s.s.) is a well-known foodborne pathogen that produces a range of enterotoxins and is able to cause two different types of foodborne illnesses-the emetic and the diarrheal syndromes. In this study, 54 B. cereus s.s. strains isolated from foodstuff and foods involved in food poisoning outbreaks were characterized according to the presence of toxin-encoding genes, virulence-encoding genes, and panC typing. Most isolates were assigned to panC groups IV (61.1%) and III (25.9%), but members of groups II and V could also be found. Investigation of specific alleles revealed high numbers of isolates carrying toxin and other virulence genes including nheA (100%), nheB (100%), hblA (79.6%), hblC (79.6%), hblD (74.1%), cytK-2 (61.1%), clo (100%), pc-plc (75.9%), sph (68.5%), pi-plc (66.6%), hlyIII (62.9%), and hlyII (24.1%). All isolates were negative for ces and cytK-1. In summary, we detected various enterotoxin and other virulence factor genes associated with diarrheal syndrome in strains analyzed, implicated or not with food poisoning. Furthermore, the most isolates analyzed belong to high-risk phylogenetic groups' panC types III and IV. Our study provides a convenient molecular scheme for characterization of B. cereus s.s. strains responsible for food poisoning outbreaks in order to improve the monitoring and investigation and assess emerging clusters and diversity of strains.

In the retrosplenial cortex (RSC), the role of cholinergic modulation via α7 nicotinic receptors and their involvement in memory is unknown. In recent years, the RSC has been shown to deteriorate in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Likewise, the cholinergic system has been postulated as one of those responsible for cognitive impairment in patients with AD. Great interest has arisen in the study of α7 nicotinic receptors as more specific targets for the treatment of this disease. For this reason, we aim to study the role of α7 receptors of the RSC in memory processing. We infused a selective α7 receptor antagonist into the anterior part of the RSC (aRSC) to assess its role in different phases of aversive memory processing using an inhibitory avoidance task. We found that α7 nicotinic receptors are involved in memory acquisition and expression, but not in its consolidation. These results identify aRSC α7 nicotinic receptors as key players in aversive memory processing and highlight their significant potential as therapeutic targets for Alzheimer's disease.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) constitutes an important cause for concern in the field of public health, and the role of the food chain in the transmission of this pathogen and in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has not yet been defined. The objectives of this work were to isolate and characterize coagulase-positive Staphylococcus (CoPS) and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS), particularly S. aureus, from school dining rooms located in Argentina. From 95 samples that were obtained from handlers, inert surfaces, food, and air in 10 establishments, 30 Staphylococcus strains were isolated. Four isolates were S. aureus, and the remaining ones (N = 26) belonged to 11 coagulase-negative species (CoNS). The isolates were tested for susceptibility to nine antibiotics. The presence of genes encoding toxins (luk-PV, sea, seb, sec, sed, and see), adhesins (icaA, icaD), and genes that confer resistance to methicillin (mecA) and vancomycin (vanA) was investigated. The resistance rates measured for penicillin, cefoxitin, gentamicin, vancomycin, erythromycin, clindamycin, levofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline were 73%, 30%, 13%, 3%, 33%, 17%, 13%, 7%, and 7% of the isolates, respectively. Seventeen AMR profiles were detected, and 11 isolates were multidrug resistant (MDR). Seven methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus isolates were detected in the hands of handlers from four establishments, two of them were MRSA. Two S. aureus isolates presented icaA and icaD, another one, only icaD. The gene vanA was found in two isolates. In relation to S. aureus, resistance to vancomycin but not to gentamicin was detected. School feeding plays a key role in the nutrition of children, and the consumption of food contaminated with MRSA and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA) can be a serious threat to health. In particular, it was detected that the handlers were the source of MRSA, VRSA, MR-CoNS (methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus), and MDR isolates. The results obtained indicate that the vigilance of this pathogen in school dining rooms should be extreme.

Fake news can generate memory distortions and influence people's behavior. Within the framework of the great debates, the tendency to generate false memories from fake news seems to be modulated by the ideological alignment of each individual. This effect has been observed mainly around issues involving large sectors of society, but little is known about its impact on smaller-scale discussions focused on more specific populations. In this work we examine the formation of false memories from fake news in the debate between psychological currents in Argentina. For this, 326 individuals aligned to psychoanalysis (PSA) or Evidence-Based Practices (EBP) observed a series of news (12 true and 8 fabricated). The EBP group remembered or believed more fake news that damaged PSA. They also remembered with greater precision the statements of the news that harmed their own school, than those referring to others. These results could be understood as the product of an imbalance in the commitment between the different parties, since the group that proposes the paradigm shift (EBP) exhibited a congruence effect, while the group whose orientation is hegemonic in this field (PSA) did not show any effect of ideological alignment. The fact that the congruence effect is manifested to some extent in settings as relevant as the education of mental health professionals, highlights the need to move towards more careful practices in the consumption and production of media.

Based on orbital angular momentum (OAM) properties of Laguerre-Gaussian beams LG(p,ℓ), a robust optical encoding model for efficient data transmission applications is designed. This paper presents an optical encoding model based on an intensity profile generated by a coherent superposition of two OAM-carrying Laguerre-Gaussian modes and a machine learning detection method. In the encoding process, the intensity profile for data encoding is generated based on the selection of p and ℓ indices, while the decoding process is performed using a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. Two different decoding models based on an SVM algorithm are tested to verify the robustness of the optical encoding model, finding a BER =10-9 for 10.2 dB of signal-to-noise ratio in one of the SVM models.

BACKGROUND: In phase-contrast (PC) MRI, several dual velocity encoding methods have been proposed to robustly increase velocity-to-noise ratio (VNR), including a standard dual-VENC (SDV), an optimal dual-VENC (ODV), and bi- and triconditional methods. PURPOSE: To develop a correction method for the ODV approach and to perform a comparison between methods. STUDY TYPE: Case-control study. POPULATION: Twenty-six volunteers. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 1.5 T phase-contrast MRI with VENCs of 50, 75, and 150 cm/second. ASSESSMENT: Since we acquired single-VENC protocols, we used the background phase from high-VENC (VENCH ) to reconstruct the low-VENC (VENCL ) phase. We implemented and compared the unwrapping methods for different noise levels and also developed a correction of the ODV method. STATISTICAL TESTS: Shapiro-Wilk's normality test, two-way analysis of variance with homogeneity of variances was performed using Levene's test, and the significance level was adjusted by Tukey's multiple post hoc analysis with Bonferroni (P < 0.05). RESULTS: Statistical analysis revealed no extreme outliers, normally distributed residuals, and homogeneous variances. We found statistically significant interaction between noise levels and the unwrapping methods. This implies that the number of non-unwrapped pixels increased with the noise level. We found that for ß = VENCL /VENCH  = 1/2, unwrapping methods were more robust to noise. The post hoc test showed a significant difference between the ODV corrected and the other methods, offering the best results regarding the number of unwrapped pixels. DATA CONCLUSIONS: All methods performed similarly without noise, but the ODV corrected method was more robust to noise at the price of a higher computational time. ClinVar is a web platform that stores ∼789,000 genetic associations with complex diseases. A partial set of these cataloged genetic associations has challenged clinicians and geneticists, often leading to conflicting interpretations or uncertain clinical impact significance. In this study, we addressed the (re)classification of genetic variants by AmazonForest, which is a random-forest-based pathogenicity metaprediction model that works by combining functional impact data from eight prediction tools. We evaluated the performance of representation learning algorithms such as autoencoders to propose a better strategy. All metaprediction models were trained with ClinVar data, and genetic variants were annotated with eight functional impact predictors cataloged with SnpEff/SnpSift. AmazonForest implements the best random forest model with a one hot data-encoding strategy, which shows an Area Under ROC Curve of ≥0.93. AmazonForest was employed for pathogenicity prediction of a set of ∼101,000 genetic variants of uncertain significance or conflict of interpretation. Our findings revealed ∼24,000 variants with high pathogenic probability (RFprob≥0.9). In addition, we show results for Alzheimer's Disease as a demonstration of its application in clinical interpretation of genetic variants in complex diseases. Lastly, AmazonForest is available as a web tool and R object that can be loaded to perform pathogenicity predictions.

The threatening context of the COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique setting to study the effects of negative psychological symptoms on memory processes. Episodic memory is an essential function of the human being related to the ability to store and remember experiences and anticipate possible events in the future. Studying this function in this context is crucial to understand what effects the pandemic will have on the formation of episodic memories. To study this, the formation of episodic memories was evaluated by free recall, recognition, and episode order tasks for an aversive and neutral content. The results indicated that aversive episodic memory is impaired both in the free recall task and in the recognition task. Even the beneficial effect that emotional memory usually has for the episodic order was undermined as there were no differences between the neutral and aversive condition. The present work adds to the evidence that indicates that the level of activation does not modify memory processes in a linear way, which also depends on the type of recall and the characteristics of the content to be encoded.

The accurate description of a complex process should take into account not only the interacting elements involved but also the scale of the description. Therefore, there can not be a single measure for describing the associated complexity of a process nor a single metric applicable in all scenarios. This article introduces a framework based on multiscale entropy to characterize the complexity associated with the most identifiable characteristic of songs: the melody. We are particularly interested in measuring the complexity of popular songs and identifying levels of complexity that statistically explain the listeners' preferences. We analyze the relationship between complexity and popularity using a database of popular songs and their relative position in a preferences ranking. There is a tendency toward a positive association between complexity and acceptance (success) of a song that is, however, not significant after adjusting for multiple testing.

People with severe disabilities require assistance to perform their routine activities; a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) will allow them to activate devices that respond according to their needs. In this work, an HMI based on electrooculography (EOG) is presented, the instrumentation is placed on portable glasses that have the task of acquiring both horizontal and vertical EOG signals. The registration of each eye movement is identified by a class and categorized using the one hot encoding technique to test precision and sensitivity of different machine learning classification algorithms capable of identifying new data from the eye registration; the algorithm allows to discriminate blinks in order not to disturb the acquisition of the eyeball position commands. The implementation of the classifier consists of the control of a three-wheeled omnidirectional robot to validate the response of the interface. This work proposes the classification of signals in real time and the customization of the interface, minimizing the user's learning curve. Preliminary results showed that it is possible to generate trajectories to control an omnidirectional robot to implement in the future assistance system to control position through gaze orientation.

Some of the major impacts of climate change are expected in regions where drought stress is already an issue. Grain legumes are generally drought susceptible. However, tepary bean and its wild relatives within Phaseolus acutifolius or P. parvifolius are from arid areas between Mexico and the United States. Therefore, we hypothesize that these bean accessions have diversity signals indicative of adaptation to drought at key candidate genes such as: Asr2, Dreb2B, and ERECTA. By sequencing alleles of these genes and comparing to estimates of drought tolerance indices from climate data for the collection site of geo-referenced, tepary bean accessions, we determined the genotype x environmental association (GEA) of each gene. Diversity analysis found that cultivated and wild P. acutifolius were intermingled with var. tenuifolius and P. parvifolius, signifying that allele diversity was ample in the wild and cultivated clade over a broad sense (sensu lato) evaluation. Genes Dreb2B and ERECTA harbored signatures of directional selection, represented by six SNPs correlated with the environmental drought indices. This suggests that wild tepary bean is a reservoir of novel alleles at genes for drought tolerance, as expected for a species that originated in arid environments. Our study corroborated that candidate gene approach was effective for marker validation across a broad genetic base of wild tepary accessions.

INTRODUCTION: Although working memory (WM) dysfunction has been proposed as a schizophrenia (SZ) endophenotype, the specific impaired component (encoding or maintenance) in patients and unaffected relatives remains inconclusive. We compared auditory-verbal and visuospatial WM in patients with SZ, unaffected siblings (USs), and healthy controls under 2 response conditions: immediate (encoding condition) and delayed (maintenance condition). METHODS: We included 22 participants per group, similar in age and gender. Three WM tests (Spatial Span, Backward Digit Span, and Letter-Number Span) were administered under both conditions in a counterbalanced manner to all participants. RESULTS: Poorer performance was found in the SZ group for all tests (p < 0.001). USs showed a better performance than patients, but worse than controls (p < 0.05), except for the Backward Digit Span test, in which their performance was similar to that of the SZ group. The effect of the delayed response in all tasks was not significant in any group. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that WM impairment, including auditory-verbal and visuospatial modalities, corresponds to a stable feature of the disease as it is present in USs, thus confirming its potential endophenotypic property in SZ patients. No effect of the delayed response was observed, suggesting failures in encoding in both patients and USs.

A brief image presentation is sufficient to discriminate and individuate objects of expertise. Although perceptual expertise is acquired through extensive practice that increases the resolution of representations and reduces the latency of image decoding and coarse and fine information extraction, it is not known how the stages of visual processing impact object discrimination learning (ODL). Here, we compared object discrimination with brief (100 ms) and long (1,000 ms) perceptual encoding times to test if the early and late visual processes are required for ODL. Moreover, we evaluated whether encoding time and discrimination practice shape perception and recognition memory processes during ODL. During practice of a sequential matching task with initially unfamiliar complex stimuli, we find greater discrimination with greater encoding times regardless of the extent of practice, suggesting that the fine information extraction during late visual processing is necessary for discrimination. Interestingly, the overall discrimination learning was similar for brief and long stimuli, suggesting that early stages of visual processing are sufficient for ODL. In addition, discrimination practice enhances perceive and know for brief and long stimuli and both processes are associated with performance, suggesting that early stage information extraction is sufficient for modulating the perceptual processes, likely reflecting an increase in the resolution of the representations and an early availability of information. Conversely, practice elicited an increase of familiarity which was not associated with discrimination sensitivity, revealing the acquisition of a general recognition memory. Finally, the recall is likely enhanced by practice and is associated with discrimination sensitivity for long encoding times, suggesting the engagement of recognition memory in a practice independent manner. These findings contribute to unveiling the function of early stages of visual processing in ODL, and provide evidence on the modulation of the perception and recognition memory processes during discrimination practice and its relationship with ODL and perceptual expertise acquisition.

Ultraviolet light incident on organic material can initiate its spontaneous dissipative structuring into chromophores which can catalyze their own replication. This may have been the case for one of the most ancient of all chromophores dissipating the Archean UVC photon flux, the nucleic acids. Oligos of nucleic acids with affinity to particular amino acids which foment UVC photon dissipation would most efficiently catalyze their own reproduction and thus would have been selected through non-equilibrium thermodynamic imperatives which favor dissipation. Indeed, we show here that those amino acids with characteristics most relevant to fomenting UVC photon dissipation are precisely those with greatest chemical affinity to their codons or anticodons. This could provide a thermodynamic basis for the specificity in the amino acid-nucleic acid interaction and an explanation for the accumulation of information in nucleic acids since this information is relevant to the optimization of dissipation of the externally imposed thermodynamic potentials. The accumulation of information in this manner provides a link between evolution and entropy production.

Understanding how individuals detect and recognize signals emitted by conspecifics is fundamental to discussions of animal communication. The species pair Gymnotus omarorum and Brachyhypopomus gauderio, found in syntopy in Uruguay, emit species-specific electric organ discharge (EOD) that can be sensed by both species. The aim of this study was to unveil whether either of these species is able to identify a conspecific EOD, and to investigate distinctive recognition signal features. We designed a forced-choice experiment using a natural behavior (i.e. tracking electric field lines towards their source) in which each fish had to choose between a conspecific and a heterospecific electric field. We found a clear pattern of preference for a conspecific waveform even when pulses were played within 1 Hz of the same rate. By manipulating the time course of the explored signals, we found that the signal features for preference between conspecific and heterospecific waveforms were embedded in the time course of the signals. This study provides evidence that pulse Gymnotiformes can recognize a conspecific exclusively through species-specific electrosensory signals. It also suggests that the key signal features for species differentiation are probably encoded by burst coder electroreceptors. Given these results, and because receptors are sharply tuned to amplitude spectra and also tuned to phase spectra, we extend the electric color hypothesis used in the evaluation of objects to apply to communication signals.

O presente artigo tem por objetivo investigar possíveis efeitos da atenção dividida no priming de repetição a partir de uma revisão seletiva da literatura. Foram selecionados estudos realizados com testes de priming perceptual e/ou conceitual, nos quais a divisão da atenção foi realizada na fase de codificação ou de recuperação. Em geral, as evidências indicaram que o priming, tanto o perceptual quanto o conceitual, foi afetado pela atenção dividida na codificação quando a tarefa secundária (ou distratora) foi mais demandante de atenção, exigindo resposta frequente e apresentada sincrônica ao estímulo alvo. Poucos estudos foram realizados na recuperação e eles indicaram imunidade do priming perceptual e conceitual à atenção dividida. Conclui-se que os processos de memória implícita podem exigir recursos atencionais na codificação. Implicações teóricas dos resultados são discutidas.


This article aims to investigate possible effects of divided attention on repetition priming from a selective review of the literature. Studies were included if they utilized perceptual and/or conceptual priming tasks, in which the division of attention was performed during encoding or retrieval. In general, the results suggested that perceptual and conceptual priming were affected by divided attention during encoding. This effect occurred when the secondary task (or distractor task) demanded higher levels of attention, requiring frequent task responses and it was presented simultaneously to the memory target stimulus. The few studies investigating retrieval showed that perceptual and conceptual priming are not sensitive to divided attention. Therefore, implicit memory processes may require attentional resources in the encoding. Theoretical implications of the results are discussed.

Wnt ligands play critical roles in neuronal development, synapse formation, synaptic activity, and plasticity. Synaptic plasticity requires molecular remodeling of synapses, implying the expression of key synaptic components. Some studies have linked Wnt signaling activity to changes in synaptic protein levels. However, the presynaptic and postsynaptic gene expression profiles of hippocampal neurons exposed to Wnt proteins have not been studied. Hence, we treated rat cultured hippocampal neurons with recombinant Wnt3a, lithium, and the Wnt inhibitor Dkk-1 for different treatment durations and measured the mRNA and protein levels of pre- and postsynaptic components. The ligand Wnt3a promoted the differential temporal expression of genes encoding presynaptic and postsynaptic proteins. Gene expression of the presynaptic proteins Rim1, piccolo (Pclo), Erc2, Ctbp1 and Rimbp2 increased in a specific temporal pattern. Simultaneously, the mRNA and protein levels of postsynaptic components showed a different temporal expression pattern, e.g., the mRNAs for postsynaptic scaffolding components such as postsynaptic density protein-95 (PSD-95/Dlg4), Homer1 and Shank1 were temporally regulated by both Wnt3a and lithium. On the other hand, the mRNA levels of the gene encoding the protein calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV (Camk4), canonically upregulated by Wnt, were increased. Our results suggest that Wnt signaling orchestrates expressional changes in genes encoding presynaptic and postsynaptic components, probably as part of a synaptic plasticity mechanism in neurons.
