RESUMO

Schistosomiasis affects about 260 million people worldwide and the search for new schistosomicidal compounds is urgent. In this study we evaluated the in vitro effect of barbatic acid against schistosomulae and young worms of Schistosoma mansoni. The barbatic acid was evaluated through the bioassay of motility and mortality, cellular viability and ultrastructural analysis of juvenile stages through Scanning Electron Microscopy. Barbatic acid showed a schistosomicidal effect against schistosomulae and young worms of S. mansoni after 3 h of exposure. At the end of 24 h, barbatic acid showed 100 %, 89.5 %, 52 % and 28.5 % of lethality for schistosomulae at the concentrations of 200, 100, 50 and 25 µM, respectively. For young worms, barbatic acid showed 100 % and 31.7 % of lethality at the concentrations of 200 and 100 µM, respectively. Motility changes were observed at all sublethal concentrations. There was a significant reduction in the viability of young worms after exposure to barbatic acid at 50, 100 and 200 µM. Extensive damage to the schistosomulae and young worm's tegument, was observed from 50 µM. This report provides data showing the schistosomicidal effect of barbatic acid on schistosomulae and young worms of S. mansoni, causing death, motility changes and ultrastructural damage to worms.

The species Phoneutria nigriventer belongs to the class Arachnida and order aranae, it is described as a synanthropic animal, with characteristics of aggressiveness, high stress, wanderers and opportunists. In addition, it has a medical interest in public health, having a potential poison to cause injuries, not only in predatory prey, but also in humans. The developmental stages of the species are, in sequence: ootheca, egg, pre-larval, larval, young, juvenile, pre-adult and adult. In the present study, the phases of ootheca and, mainly, hatchlings were analyzed, through a creation in captivity with constant control of physical parameters (temperature and humidity), without significant variations. Thus, through follow-up, it is possible to understand aspects that influence development, to ensure the success of individuals until sexual maturation. As a sample number we obtained an N=50, among these, some arranged in the arthropod vivarium via the external environment and a large majority built internally by pregnant females. To effect the hatching of the oothecae, they were allocated in a nursery, with substrates and essential materials that mimic a natural, dark and humidified environment. Thus, 40 oothecae were designated internally, being thirty-three viable, six not viable and one partially viable, the remaining 10 came from the external environment with seven viable and three not viable. In general, the number of individualized individuals ranged from 9 to 1652, with hatching times ranging from 17 to 74 days and dates from hatching to the effective individualizing action from 14 to 45 days. The dimensioning of the volume and weight of the eggs was also defined through previously established formulas. Therefore, when comparing with other results, it was noticed that the number of individuals exceeded expectations and the hatching date fit the observed, with only one outline in the research sample.


A espécie Phoneutria nigriventer enquadra-se na classe Arachnida e ordem aranae, ela é descrita como um animal sinantrópico, com características de agressividade, elevado estresse, errantes e oportunistas. Além disso, possui interesse médico na saúde pública, tendo um veneno potencial para causar injúrias, não apenas em presas-predadores, como também nos seres humanos. Os estágios de desenvolvimento da espécie são, em sequência: ooteca, ovo, pré-larval, larval, filhotes, jovens, pré- adulto e adulto. No presente estudo, foram analisados as fases de ootecas e, principalmente, filhotes, através de uma criação em cativeiro com controle constante de parâmetros físicos (temperatura e umidade), sem variações significativas. Assim, pelo acompanhamento pode-se compreender aspectos que influenciam o desenvolvimento, para garantir o sucesso dos indivíduos até maturação sexual. Como número amostral obtivemos um N=50, dentre essas, algumas dispostas no biotério de artrópodes via meio externo e, uma grande maioria construídas internamente por fêmeas prenhas. Para efetivação da eclosão das ootecas, estas foram alocadas em um viveiro, com substratos e materiais essenciais que mimetizem um ambiente natural, escuro e umidificado. Dessa forma, 40 ootecas foram designadas internamente, sendo trinta e três viáveis, seis inviáveis e uma parcialmente viável, as 10 restantes vieram de meio externo com sete viáveis e três inviáveis. De modo geral, o número de indivíduos individualizados variou de 9 a 1652, com tempos de eclosão no intervalo de 17 a 74 dias e datas desde a eclosão até a efetiva ação de individualizar de 14 a 45 dias. Definiu-se, também, o dimensionamento de volume e peso dos ovos através de fórmulas estabelecidas previamente. Portanto, ao comparar com outros resultados, percebeu-se que o número de indivíduos superou as expectativas e, a data de eclosão encaixou-se no observado, com apenas um outline na amostragem da pesquisa.

Prolactin (PRL) plays critical roles in regulation of biological functions with the binding of specific prolactin receptor (PRLR). Revealing the expression patterns of PRLR at different developmental stages is beneficial to better understand the role of PRL and its mechanism of action in striped hamsters. In this study, the cDNA sequence of PRLR (2866-base-pairs) was harvested from the pituitary of mature female striped hamsters (Cricetulus barabensis) that contains an 834-base-pair 5′-untranslated region (1-834 bp), a 1848-base-pair open reading frame (835-2682 bp), and a 184-base-pair 3′-untranslated region (2683-2866). The 1848-base-pair open reading frame encodes a mature prolactin-binding protein of 592 amino acids. In the mature PRLR, two prolactin-binding motifs, 12 cysteines, and five potential Asn-linked glycosylation sites were detected. Our results showed that the PRLR mRNA quantity in the hypothalamus, pituitary, ovaries, or testis was developmental-stage-dependent, with the highest level at sub-adult stage and the lowest level at old stage. We also found that PRLR mRNAs were highest in pituitary, medium level in hypothalamus, and lowest in ovaries or testis. PRLR mRNAs were significantly higher in males than in females, except in the hypothalamus and pituitary from 7-week-old striped hamsters. Moreover, the PRLR mRNAs in the hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovaries or testis were positively correlated with the expression levels of GnRH in the hypothalamus. These results indicated that the PRLR has conserved domain in striped hamster, but also possesses specific character. PRLR has multiple biological functions including positively regulating reproduction in the striped hamster.

Dung beetles are holometabolous insects that feed on herbivorous mammal dung and provide services to the ecosystem including nutrient cycling and soil fertilization. It has been suggested that organisms developing on incomplete diets such as dungs require the association with microorganisms for the synthesis and utilization of nutrients. We describe the diversity and composition of the gut-microbiota during the life cycle of the dung beetle Copris incertus using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We found that C. incertus gut contained a broad diversity of bacterial groups (1,699 OTUs and 302 genera). The taxonomic composition varied during the beetle life cycle, with the predominance of some bacterial genera in a specific developmental stage (Mothers: Enterobacter and Serratia; Eggs: Nocardioides and Hydrogenophaga; Larval and pupal stages: Dysgonomonas and Parabacteroides; offspring: Ochrobactrum). The beta diversity evidenced similarities among developmental stages, clustering (i) the adult stages (mother, male and female offsprings), (ii) intermediate developmental (larvae and pupa), and (iii) initial stage (egg). Microbiota differences could be attributed to dietary specialization or/and morpho-physiological factors involved in the transition from a developmental stage to the next. The predicted functional profile (PICRUSt2 analysis) for the development bacterial core of the level 3 categories, indicated grouping by developmental stage. Only 36 categories were significant in the SIMPER analysis, including the metabolic categories of amino acids and antibiotic synthesis, which were enriched in the larval and pupal stages; both categories are involved in the metamorphosis process. At the gene level, we found significant differences only in the KOs encoding functions related to nitrogen fixation, uric acid metabolism, and plant cell wall degradation for all developmental stages. Nitrogen fixation and plant cell wall degradation were enriched in the intermediate stages and uric acid metabolism was enriched in mothers. The data reported here suggested the influence of the maternal microbiota in the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota of the offspring.

Fasciola hepatica has a heteroxenous complex life cycle that alternates between an invertebrate intermediate and a mammalian definitive host. The life cycle has five well-defined phases within their hosts and the environment: (1) eggs released from the vertebrate host to the environment and its subsequent development; (2) emergence of miracidia and their search and penetration into an intermediate snail host; (3) development and multiplication of larval stages within the snail; (4) emergence of cercariae and the encystment in metacercariae; and (5) ingestion of infective metacercariae by the definitive host and development to its adult form. Here we describe some protocols to obtain and maintain different developmental stages of F. hepatica in the laboratory for different applications (molecular/cellular biology studies, vaccination trials, etc.).

This study examined the artificial breeding and embryonic development of a mountainous fish species Garra cambodgiensis (Tirant, 1883) found in Promlok waterfall in Khaoluang National park, Phromkhiri district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The fishes were collected from June 2017- January 2018 and kept in aquaria. Afterward, the brood males and females were selected and injected with buserelin (LHRHa) (10 µg/kg body weight) and domperidone (10 mg/kgbody weight). After the injections, both females and males were kept together in the water at a proportion of 3 females: 1male. The fertilization of eggs started after 4 hours and 30minutes. The fertilized eggs were greenish-grey and semi-buoyant. After fertilization, one blastodisc turned into 2 equalsized blastomeres, and then each cell divided into 4, 8, 16, 32,64 cells respectively. The morula stage went to the blastula stage in about 3hr and 28 min, to gastrula stage in about 5 hr and 11 min, and to the somite stage in about 7 hr and 7 min. The optical vesicles and auditory vesicles developed after approximately 8 hr and 27 min, and 10 hr and 30 min, respectively. After approximately 12 hours and 58 minutes of fertilization, hatching of eggs occurred. Nowadays, the numbers of G. Cambodgienesis are declining rapidly in southern Thailand due to several environmental and anthropogenic reasons. Therefore, it is very important to conserve the populations of G. Cambodgienesis. Artificial breeding could be an effective way to conserve and restore this fish in their natural habitat in southern Thailand.

Cocoa production is a complex process where the conditions of the raw materials decisively impact the final quality of the product. Three universal clones (CCN51, ICS95, and TSH565) from the Department of Huila in Colombia were evaluated to characterize the ripening process of cocoa fruits. Maturity indicators were identified by following the evolution of basic fruit characteristics, including size, weight, seed count, depth and distance between grooves, width and length of the apex, diameter and length of the seed, moisture content, color parameters, fruit firmness, soluble solids content, pH, and acidity. The results indicated that each cocoa clone has a unique set of ripeness parameters: color for ICS95; firmness and weight of the seed for CCN51; and color, morphological characteristics of the apex and grooves, weight, moisture content, pH, and total soluble solids for TSH565. The establishment of reliable, practical, and objective ripeness indicators for each cocoa clone will allow more homogenous cocoa pods to be selected for fermentation, which will ultimately contribute to improved quality and homogeneity of cocoa and its derived products.

Currently, the control of schistosomiasis is based on a single drug, praziquantel, which is effective against all species of Schistosoma but only in the adult stage, presenting a schistosomicidal deficit at the other developmental stages of the parasites. Recently our research group has demonstrated that the potassium salt of usnic acid (PS-UA) presented schistosomicidal property against couples of adult worms of S. mansoni. Thus, the present study seeks to report for the first time the in vitro activity of PS-UA against different developmental stages of S. mansoni (schistosomules and young worms). As schistosomicide parameters, we evaluated motility, mortality, cell viability of the worms and tegument changes by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After 3 h exposure, PS-UA was lethal to schistosomules at concentrations of 100 and 50 µM, whereas for concentrations 25 and 12.5 µM, 38 and 18% of mortality and 62 and 24% changes in motility, respectively, were reached. Yet for schistosomules, concentration of 25 µM caused 90 and 100% of death after 6 and 12 h, respectively. In the concentration of 12.5 µM at intervals of 12 and 24 h mortality was 68 and 100%, respectively. For young worms, after 3 h of exposure at concentrations of 200 and 100 µM caused 57 and 27% mortality, respectively. After 12 and 24 h, these concentrations caused mortality of 90 and 100% and 47 and 60% respectively. After 24 h, concentrations of 50 and 25 µM caused 80 and 30% change in motility, respectively. However, at the 12.5 µM concentration no change was observed. In addition, PS-UA reduced the cellular viability of young worms by 50.98% and 85.87% at concentrations of 100 and 200 µM, respectively. In both stages of worms and at different exposure intervals, PS-UA caused alterations such as: dorsoventral contraction, peeling, swelling, blisters, erosion, exposure of subtegumental tissue and disintegration of tegument. According to the results, changes in motility and mortality caused by PS-UA against schistosomules and young worms were concentration and time-dependents, also PS-UA even at low concentration, was able to cause profound ultrastructural changes in the integument of the worms. PS-UA is a promising candidate as prophylactic agent in the control of schistosomiasis mansoni.

Root system formation to a great extent depends on lateral root (LR) formation. In Arabidopsis thaliana, LRs are initiated within a parent root in pericycle that is an external tissue of the stele. LR initiation takes place in a strictly acropetal pattern, whereas posterior lateral root primordium (LRP) formation is asynchronous. In this chapter, we focus on methods of genetic and phenotypic analysis of LR initiation, LRP morphogenesis, and LR emergence in Arabidopsis. We provide details on how to make cleared root preparations and how to identify the LRP stages. We also pay attention to the categorization of the LRP developmental stages and their variations and to the normalization of the number of LRs and LRPs formed, per length of the primary root, and per number of cells produced within a root. Hormonal misbalances and mutations affect LRP morphogenesis significantly, and the evaluation of LRP abnormalities is addressed as well. Finally, we deal with various molecular markers that can be used for genetic and phenotypic analyses of LR development.

Taeniids tapeworms are hermaphroditic helminths that gradually develop testis and ovaries in their reproductive units. The larval stage of the tapeworms named cysticercus is a vesicle that contains the scolex and proliferates asexually in the abdominal cavity of mice. Once in the host, they evaginate, attach to the gut and develop into an adult organism, the tapeworm. We have previously reported reported that T. crassiceps ORF and solium cysticerci transform steroid precursors to androgens and estrogens. Taenia crassiceps WFU cysticerci can also synthesize corticosteroids. The aim of the present work is to investigate the relationship between steroid synthesis ability and the developmental stage of the parasite T. crassiceps WFU. To this purpose, cysticerci were obtained from the abdominal cavity of female mice, manually separated in invaginated (IC) and evaginated parasites (EC) and preincubated for 24 h in DMEM plus antibiotics/antimycotics. Next step consisted in incubation for different periods in the fresh media added with tritiated androstenedione (3H-A4) or progesterone (3H-P4) and incubated for different periods. Taenia crassiceps WFU tapeworms were recovered from the intestine of golden hamsters that had been orally infected with cysticerci. The worms were pre-cultured in DMEM plus FBS and antibiotics, and then incubated without FBS for different time periods, in the presence of 3H-A4 or 3H-P4. At the end of the experiments the media from cysticerci and tapeworms were analyzed by thin layer chromatography. Results showed that testosterone synthesis was significantly higher in the evaginated cysticerci and increased with time in culture. The invaginated and evaginated cysticerci also synthesized small quantities of 17ß-estradiol (E2) and estrone. The evaginated cysticerci synthesized twice more 3H-deoxycorticosterone (3H-DOC) than the invaginated parasites, the production increased significantly with time in culture. Taenia crassiceps WFU tapeworms synthesized significant quantities of 3H-testosterone and small amounts of estrone after only 3 h of culture in the presence of 3H-A4. The tapeworms also transformed 3H-P4 to 3H-DOC and increased its synthesis after 24 h in culture. In summary, our data show the pathways that T. crassiceps WFU cysticerci use to synthesize sexual steroids in both larval developmental stages and reveals the steroidogenic capacity of the tapeworms.

The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), is considered the main vector of the bacteria associated with huanglongbing, a very serious disease that has threatened the world citrus industry. The absence of efficient control management protocols, including a lack of resistant cultivars, has led to the development of different approaches to study this pathosystem. The production of resistant genotypes relies on D. citri gene expression analyses by RT-qPCR to assess control of the vector population. High-quality, reliable RT-qPCR analyses depend upon proper reference gene selection and validation. However, adequate D. citri reference genes have not yet been identified. In the present study, we evaluated the genes EF 1-α, ACT, GAPDH, RPL7, RPL17, and TUB as candidate reference genes for this insect. Gene expression stability was evaluated using the mathematical algorithms deltaCt, NormFinder, BestKeeper, and geNorm, at five insect developmental stages, grown on two different plant hosts [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck (Sapindales: Rutaceae) and Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack (Sapindales: Rutaceae)]. The final gene ranking was calculated using RefFinder software, and the V-ATPase-A gene was selected for validation. According to our results, two reference genes are recommended when different plant hosts and developmental stages are considered. Considering gene expression studies in D. citri grown on M. paniculata, regardless of the insect developmental stage, GAPDH and RPL7 have the best fit as reference genes in RT-qPCR analyses, whereas GAPDH and EF 1-α are recommended as reference genes in insect studies using C. sinensis.

The mouse, chicken, African clawed frog, and zebrafish are considered ¨model organisms¨ due to their extensive embryological and genetic characterization. However, they are far from representative of known diversity, impairing phylogenetic analyses of developmental patterns. Since squamates have historically received limited attention in developmental studies, we here describe the developmental sequence for Tropidurus torquatus, and provide the first post-ovipositional developmental series for the lizard family Tropiduridae. Fifteen developmental stages are described based on morphological traits such as the eye and accessory visual structures, pharyngeal arches, fusion of facial primordia, limb development, pigmentation, and scales. Organogenesis is already in progression at oviposition (Stage 28), with embryos continuing to develop at the incubation temperature of 30°C ± 1°C, and hatching after 75 ± 5 days, at Stage 42. Comparisons with other lizards show a conserved embryonic sequence, however developmental timing differences were found in features such as the pharyngeal arches, endolymphatic sacs, pigmentation and scales. The development of the phallic and cranial lip of the cloaca anlages are compared with that of other lizards. The order of T. torquatus fore- and hindlimb formation differs from that most commonly observed in lizards. The abundance and close association of this species with urban environments, as well as the ease of capturing and managing females, makes T. torquatus an attractive source of developmental data for future experimental and ontogenetic studies. This study proposes eight stages according to the main discernible changes recorded throughout the embryonic development of Jenynsia multidentata. The development of morphological embryo structures, pigmentation, and changes in tissues connecting mother and embryo were included in the stage characterization. From the fertilized egg (Stage 1), an embryo reaches the intermediary stages when presenting yolk syncytial layer (Stage 2), initial pigmentation of the outer layers of the retina and dorsal region of the head (Stage 3), and the sprouting of the caudal (Stage 4), dorsal and anal fins (Stage 5). During the later stages, the ovarian folds enter the gills, and the body pigmentation becomes more intense (Stage 6), the body becomes elongated (Stage 7), and there is a greater intensity in body pigmentation and increased muscle mass (Stage 8). The dry weight of the batches varied between 0.6 ± 0.3 mg (Stage 3) to 54.6 ± 19.7 mg (Stage 8), but the dry weight of the maternal-embryonic connecting tissues remained almost constant. After controlling the effect of those reproductive tissues, the gain in dry weight of the batches throughout development increased exponentially from Stage 6, reflecting the increase in size and weight of the embryos due to matrotrophy.(AU)


Este estudio propone una clasificación constituida por ocho etapas, establecidas con base en los principales cambios macroscópicos registrados a lo largo del desarrollo embrionario de Jenynsia multidentata. El desarrollo de estructuras embrionarias, los patrones de pigmentación y los cambios en los tejidos de conexión entre la madre y el embrión fueron incluidos en la caracterización de cada etapa. Inicia con el huevo fertilizado (Etapa 1), siguiendo con etapas intermedias del embrión en las cuales es visible la capa sincitial del vitelo (Etapa 2), la pigmentación inicial de las capas externas de la retina y el dorso de la cabeza (Etapa 3), y la aparición de las aletas caudal (Etapa 4), dorsal y anal (Etapa 5). En las etapas posteriores, los pliegues del tejido ovárico se introducen por las branquias y se intensifica la pigmentación corporal (Etapa 6), el cuerpo se extiende (Etapa 7) y hay un marcado aumento en la pigmentación corporal y masa muscular (Etapa 8). El peso seco de los lotes varió entre 0,6 ± 0,3 mg (Etapa 3) y 54,6 ± 19,7 mg (Etapa 8); sin embargo, el peso seco del tejido que conecta a la madre con el embrión se mantuvo prácticamente constante. Después de controlar el efecto del peso seco de estos tejidos, la ganancia de peso seco de los lotes de embriones a lo largo del desarrollo aumentó de forma exponencial a partir de la Etapa 6, evidenciándose en el aumento en tamaño y peso de los embriones debido a la matrotrofia.(AU)

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine the maximum development rates for the phases of emergence, vegetative and reproductive, and to test the performance of the Wang and Engel (WE) model for simulating the development of landrace and improved maize cultivars sown on different dates. Model calibration was with data collected from a field experiment with a sowing date on December 13, 2014, and the model was tested with independent data from experiments with five sowing dates (August 20 and November 4, 2013, February 3 and August 15, 2014, and January 7, 2015) in Santa Maria, RS. The experiment was a complete randomized block design with four replicates. The dates of emergence (EM), silking (R1), and physiological maturity (R6) of two landraces ('Cinquentinha' and 'Bico de ouro') and two improved maize cultivars ('BRS Planalto' and 'AS 1573PRO') were recorded. Maximum daily developmental rates varied among cultivars from 0.2400 to 0.3411 d-1 for the emergence phase, from 0.0213 to 0.0234 d-1 for the vegetative phase, and from 0.0254 to 0.0298 d-1 for the reproductive phase. The WE model adequately estimated the developmental stages of landraces and improved maize cultivars with a mean error of 3.7 days. The cardinal temperatures used in the WE model were appropriate to estimate the developmental stages of landraces and improved maize cultivars.


RESUMO: O objetivo neste trabalho foi obter as taxas máximas de desenvolvimento para as fases de emergência, vegetativa e reprodutiva, e testar o desempenho do modelo de Wang e Engel (WE) para estimar o desenvolvimento de cultivares crioulas e melhoradas de milho em diferentes datas de semeadura. A calibração foi realizada com dados de um experimento de campo semeado em 13/12/2014, e a validação com dados independentes de experimentos semeados em 20/08/2013, 04/11/2013, 03/02/2014, 15/08/2014 e 07/01/2015 em Santa Maria, RS. O delineamento foi blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Foram registradas as datas de emergência (EM), espigamento (R1) e maturidade fisiológica (R6) de duas cultivares crioulas ('Cinquentinha' e 'Bico de ouro') e duas melhoradas ('BRS Planalto' e 'AS 1573PRO'). As taxas máximas de desenvolvimento diário diferiram entre as cultivares variando de 0,2400 a 0,3411 dia-1 para a fase de emergência, de 0,0213 a 0,0234 dia-1 para a fase vegetativa e de 0,0254 a 0,0298 dia-1 para a fase reprodutiva. O modelo WE estimou adequadamente os estágios de desenvolvimento de cultivares crioulas e melhoradas de milho, com um erro médio de 3,7 dias. As temperaturas cardinais utilizadas no modelo WE são apropriadas para estimar os estágios de desenvolvimento de cultivares crioulas e melhoradas de milho.

The exposure of wildlife and humans to toxic residues of Roundup(®) through agricultural practices or the food chain has been reported since the herbicide was found contaminating rivers. Glyphosate, N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine acid, is a nonselective post-emergent herbicide and is formulated as an isopropylamine salt with the surfactant taloamine polyethoxylate (POEA) representing the commercial formulation of Roundup(®). There is little knowledge about the effects of the herbicide on helminth parasites, particularly those whose life cycle is related to water bodies. Here we investigated the effects of the Roundup(®) on the food-borne trematode Echinostoma paraensei in experimental conditions using different developmental stages (eggs, miracidia, cercariae, metacercariae, newly excysted larvae (NEL), helminths at seven days and helminths at fourteen days). Three different herbicide concentrations were tested based on concentrations typically applied in the field: 225, 450 and 900 mg/L. Specimens were analyzed in vitro for hatching miracidia, mortality and excystment rate of metacercariae and in vivo for parasitic load and egg production. There was a significant difference in the hatching miracidia rate only for the newly embryonated eggs. The mortality of specimens and excystment rate of metacercariae were concentration-dependent. There was a significant difference in the miracidia mortality with respect to concentration until 56.3 mg/L. The same effect was observed for cercariae, and mortality was observed from 15 min onwards at concentrations of 225-900 mg/L. At low concentrations, mortality was detected after 30 min. The effects of the herbicide concentration on NEL and on helminths at seven and fourteen days showed a significant difference after 24 h. There was no significant difference in parasitic load and egg production after infection of rodents with exposed metacercariae. All developmental stages of the trematode E. paraensei were affected by Roundup(®) exposure under experimental conditions. These results suggest that dynamics of transmission of the trematode could be affected in the natural environments. The study also reinforces the usefulness of this trematode as a good model organism to test pesticides regarding human and environmental health.

BACKGROUND: Transmission of fungal pathogens of aphids may be affected by the host developmental stage. Brassica and Lactuca sativa L. crops were sampled in Santa Fe, Argentina, to determine the prevalence of fungal-diseased aphids and investigate the differences between developmental stages of aphids. RESULTS: The fungal pathogens identified were Zoophthora radicans (Bref.) A. Batko, Pandora neoaphidis (Remaud. & Hennebert) Humber and Entomophthora planchoniana Cornu. Their prevalence on each crop was calculated. The numbers of infected aphids were significantly different between the different developmental stages on all crops except B. oleracea var. botrytis L. CONCLUSIONS: The entomophthoralean fungi identified are important mortality factors of aphids on horticultural crops in Santa Fe. The numbers of infected nymphs and adults were significantly different, nymphs being the most affected developmental stage. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry.

Solanum melongena L. and Capsicum annuum L. were sampled in Argentina to determine the prevalence of fungal diseased aphids. The pathogens identified were Pandora neoaphidis (Remaudière & Hennebert) Humber and Zoophthora radicans (Brefeld) Batko (Entomophthorales: Entomophthoraceae) on aphids from eggplants; and P. neoaphidis and Entomophthora planchoniana Cornu (Entomophthorales: Entomophthoraceae) on aphids from peppers. The highest fungal prevalence was 45.5% (n=2296) and 98.1% (n=3212) from aphids on eggplants and peppers, respectively. In both crops, significant differences were found on number of infected aphids among developmental stages. P.neoaphidis and E. planchoniana caused epizootics in M. persicae.
