PURPOSE: The composition and properties of resin-based composite materials could affect tooth wear and lead to clinical problems. Therefore, the study objective was to characterize human tooth wear behavior against a bulk-fill restorative (BF) compared to a conventional resin composite (RC) and a CAD/CAM resin nano ceramic (RN). METHODS: Square-shaped specimens of each material were prepared and sub-divided according to the number of testing cycles (n=8): 100,000, 250,000, and 500,000 cycles. An occlusal wear test was performed using a chewing machine with 49 N, 2 Hz, in 37°C distilled water. Human premolar cusps were used as antagonists. Micro-CT and laser scanner were used to scan antagonists and specimens, respectively. Wear volume was assessed using a software and the wear pattern was examined with SEM. Softening in solvent analysis was performed by measuring the materials' Knoop microhardness (KHN) before and after immersion in ethanol. Wear volume data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Student-Neuman-Keuls test (α=0.05). RESULTS: For tooth and specimen wear volume, there was statistical significance for material and number of cycles, but not for the interaction between factors. BF resulted in less tooth (p=0.008) and specimen (p=0.030) wear than RN and RC, which were similar (p⟩0.05). Volume loss increased from 100,000 to 500,000 cycles. BF showed the lowest microhardness (KHN1); and %ΔKHN similar to RC, but greater than RN. CONCLUSION: BF induced less volume loss to the tooth than RC and RN, while presenting greater wear resistance. The tooth wear pattern and damage progression were mild for all materials. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Resin composites show favorable wear behavior, leading to low volume loss and mild structural damage of the tooth. Regular bulk-fill resin composite stands out for its efficient restorative technique, low wear susceptibility and reduced capacity to wear down the tooth.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate staining layer behavior applied to high-translucency zirconia (YZHT), feldspathic ceramics (FD), and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) surfaces against different antagonists. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Monolithic ceramic discs (n = 120) (ø 12 mm; thickness, 1.2 mm; ISO 6872) were obtained, 30 from YZHT and FD, and 60 from ZLS CAD/CAM blocks (staining layer applied before or after the crystallization procedure). The specimens were divided into 12 subgroups (n = 10) according to the antagonists: steatite, polymer-infiltrated ceramic, or zirconia. Mechanical cycling (1.5 × 104 cycles; 15 N; horizontal displacement, 6 mm; 1.7 Hz) and flexural strength tests (1 mm/min-1000 kg cell) were performed. The differences between final and initial roughnesses (Ra, Rz, and Rsm), the mass loss, and the flexural strength data were individually analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The roughnesses of all ceramics did not present a statistically significant difference before wear simulation: Ra (p = 0.3348), Rz (p = 0.5590), and Rsm (p = 0.5330). After the wear simulation, the Ra parameter was not affected by an interaction between ceramic and antagonist (p = 0.595). The Rz and Rsm parameters were affected only by the antagonist pistons (both, p = 0.000). The ceramics used in this study showed statistically significant differences in mass loss after the wear test (p < 0.0001). The additional firing (2 steps) of the ZLS2 led to a higher lost mass quantity. CONCLUSION: All ceramics presented similar initial roughnesses and similar roughnesses after the wear simulation. The zirconia antagonist showed better performance against ceramics with high crystalline content. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: It is clear that restorative materials must be carefully selected by dental practitioners according to indications, properties, and antagonists. The steatite antagonist, that is, an enamel analog, showed better performance against vitreous ceramics, while the zirconia antagonist showed better performance against ceramics with high crystalline content. Wear affects the surface roughnesses of the ceramics. Additional firing for the staining of the zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic led to a greater loss of mass.

A impressão 3D surge como uma nova alternativa para confecção de próteses provisórias através do uso de resinas temporárias, visando otimizar e simplificar a técnica de confecção e sua aplicação. Este trabalho analisou o comportamento de uma resina provisória de impressão 3D sob simulação de desgaste frente a três diferentes antagonistas. Para isso, foram confeccionados 60 discos de resina provisória de impressão 3D (Resilab Temp) nas dimensões 12 x 2 mm. Os modelos 3D foram previamente desenhados no software Rhinoceros (Robert McNeel & Associates, Seattle, WA, EUA); versão 5, e processados no software de uma impressora 3D, produzidos utilizando impressora com processamento digital de luz (DLP). Metade das amostras recebeu uma camada de glaze na superfície da resina. Os espécimes foram submetidos à simulação de desgaste em cicladora mecânica com sliding (Byocicle V2, Biopdi, São Carlos, SP). Foram utilizados como antagonistas: esteatita, resina de impressão 3D e resina acrílica termicamente ativada, adaptados a mandris personalizados. O protocolo utilizado para a simulação do desgaste foi de 30 N ‭̸1,7 Hz ‭̸2x103 ciclos ‭̸37ºC, imersos em água. Realizou-se os testes de rugosidade, análise de superfície com microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e análise digital de varredura única de perda de volume de desgaste. O desgaste dos antagonistas foi avaliado através de estereomicroscópio óptico. A análise estatística foi realizada aplicando-se o teste de ANOVA 2 fatores para todos os grupos analisados. Na rugosidade, foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre todos os grupos (p<0,05), exceto Rz do grupo com glaze, em que todas as variáveis foram iguais (p=0,377). Para perda de volume em desgaste, observou-se diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre os antagonistas (p=0,015) e para o tratamento com glaze (p=0,001). No desgaste dos antagonistas, observou-se diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre eles (p=0,001) e o tratamento com glaze (p=0,001). A resina em estudo apresenta resistência ao desgaste adequada para uso a curto prazo, sendo essa resistência influenciada pelo material antagonista. A aplicação da camada de glaze sobre a resina diminui a rugosidade superficial média do material e melhora a resistência ao desgaste (AU)


3D printing emerges as a new alternative for making provisional prostheses through the use of temporary resins, aiming to optimize and simplify the manufacturing technique and its application. This work analyzed the behavior of a provisional 3D printing resin under wear simulation against three different antagonists. For this, 60 discs of temporary 3D printing resin (Resilab Temp) in dimensions 12 x 2 mm were made. The 3D models were previously designed in Rhinoceros software (Robert McNeel & Associates, Seattle, WA, USA); version 5, and processed in the software of a 3D printer, produced using a printer with digital light processing (DLP). Half of the samples received a glaze layer on the resin surface. The specimens were submitted to wear simulation in a mechanical cycler with sliding (Byocicle V2, Biopdi, São Carlos, SP). The following antagonists were used: steatite, 3D printing resin and thermally activated acrylic resin, adapted to customized mandrels. The protocol used for the simulation of wear was 30 N ‭̸1.7 Hz ‭̸2x103 cycles ‭̸37ºC, immersed in water. Roughness tests, surface analysis with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and single-scan digital analysis of wear volume loss were performed. The wear of the antagonists was evaluated using an optical stereomicroscope. Statistical analysis was performed by applying the 2-way ANOVA test for all analyzed groups. In terms of roughness, statistically significant differences were observed between all groups (p<0.05), except for the Rz group with glaze, in which all variables were equal (p=0.377). For volume loss in grinding, statistically significant differences were observed between antagonists (p=0.015) and for treatment with glaze (p=0.001). In the wear of the antagonists, statistically significant differences were observed between them (p=0.001) and the treatment with glaze (p=0.001). The resin under study has adequate wear resistance for short-term use, and this resistance is influenced by the antagonist material. The application of the glaze layer over the resin decreases the average surface roughness of the material and improves wear resistance. (AU)

Com base no desenvolvimento da odontologia adesiva, restaurações minimamente invasivas em cerâmica são utilizadas como alternativas para restaurar um dente. As cerâmicas odontológicas são amplamente aplicadas na área odontológica principalmente devido à sua estética e resistência mecânica. Uma das propriedades da cerâmica a ser bem conhecida antes de seu uso, é a resistência ao desgaste que deve ser compatível com o comportamento de desgaste do antagonista para evitar desempenhos indesejados. Portanto, vários métodos têm sido realizados para avaliar o comportamento do desgaste dos materiais cerâmicos considerando diferentes condições presentes no complexo meio oral. Este estudo teve como objetivo compilar os métodos utilizados para investigar o desgaste das cerâmicas odontológicas e descrever os mecanismos de desgaste envolvidos nos mesmos. A obtenção e análise de dados também é abordada para discutir os resultados obtidos a partir de diferentes métodos, bem como a análise clínica do desgaste e perspectivas futuras sobre esse tema. Em conclusão, muitas metodologias estão disponíveis para medir o desgaste cerâmico. Portanto, os métodos devem ser selecionados com base na relevência clínica de cada estudo e devem seguir parâmetros previamente relatados para padronização, permitindo a comparação da literatura (AU)


Based on the development of adhesive dentistry, minimally invasive restorations in ceramics are used as alternatives to restore a tooth. Dental ceramics are largely applied in the dentistry field mainly due to their esthetic and mechanical strength. One of the ceramic properties to be well known before its use is the wear resistance that should be compatible with the antagonist wear behavior to avoid unwanted performance. Therefore, several methods have been performed to assess the ceramic materials wear behavior considering different conditions present in the complex oral medium. This study aimed to compile the methods used to investigate dental ceramics wear and to describe the wear mechanisms involved on them. Obtaining and analyzing data is also addressed to discuss the results obtained from different methods, as well as the clinical analysis of wear and future perspectives on this topic. In conclusion, many methodologies are available to measure the ceramic wear. Therefore, the methods must be selected based on the clinical significance of each study and should follow previously reported parameters for standardization, allowing literature comparison. (AU)

Objetive: To compare the clinical behavior of two types of Bulk Fill composite resins and a nanohybrid resin at 18 months in occlusal restorations. Material and Methods: Three occlusal restorations were performed in each one of the 55 participants. They were randomly distributed into three groups, TN: Tetric-N-Ceram Bulk-Fill, FK: Filtek Bulk-Fill, and Z350: Filtek Z350XT. Adhesive techniques and restorative procedures were performed according to the manufacturer's instructions for each restorative material used. In TN and FK an increment of 4mm was applied, and in Z350 increments of ≤2mm depth were applied. Two calibrated operators evaluated the restorations at baseline and at 18 months using the FDI World Dental Federations system (1: excellent, 2: good, 3: satisfactory, 4: unsatisfactory, 5: poor) for clinical marginal staining (MS) properties, fracture-retention (FR), superficial texture (ST), marginal integrity (MI), postoperative sensitivity (PS) and caries (C). Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon were used to compare the 3 groups at 18 months (5% significance). Results: 38 patients with a total of 114 restorations were assessed, being evaluated with excellent clinical behavior; MI, 78.9% in Z350, 89.51% in TN and 81.6% in FK; ST 73.5% in Z350, 86.8% in TN, and 84.2% in FK; MS 84.2% in Z350, 84.2% in TN, and 91.2% in FK; PS 100% in Z350 and 97.3% in TN and FK; in C and FR, 100% in the 3 groups. There were no significant differences between the three groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: The three resins studied presented a good clinical performance at 18 months without showing significant differences in the clinical properties evaluated.


Objetivo: Comparar el comportamiento clínico a 18 meses en restauraciones oclusales entre dos tipos de resinas compuestas Bulk Fill y una resina nanohíbrida. Material y Métodos: En 55 participantes se realizaron 3 restauraciones oclusales en cada paciente, distribuidas aleatoriamente en 3 grupos, TN: Tetric-N-Ceram Bulk-Fill, FK: Filtek Bulk-Fill y Z350: Filtek Z350XT. Las técnicas adhesivas y procedimientos restauradores fueron realizados según las instrucciones de los fabricantes de cada material restaurador utilizado. En TN y FK se aplicó un incremento de 4mm y en Z350 se aplicó incrementos ≤ 2 mm de profundidad. Dos operadores calibrados evaluaron las restauraciones al baseline y a los 18 meses mediante el sistema FDI World Dental Federations (1: excelente, 2: aceptable, 3: suficiente, 4: insatisfactorio, 5: inaceptable) en las propiedades clínicas de tinción marginal (TM), fractura-retención (FR), textura superficial (TS), integridad marginal (IM), sensibilidad postoperatoria (SP) y caries (C). Se utilizó Kruskal-Wallis y Wilcoxon para la comparación de los 3 grupos a 18 meses (significancia de 5%). Resultados: Se controlaron 38 pacientes con un total de 114 restauraciones, siendo evaluados con comportamiento clínico excelente; IM, 78.9% en Z350, 89.51% en TN y 81.6% en FK; TS 73.5%, en Z350, 86.8% en TN y 84.2% en FK; TM, 84.2% en Z350, 84.2% en TN y 91.2% en FK; SP 100% en Z350 y 97,3% en TN y FK; en C y FR 100% en los 3 grupos. No hubo diferencias significativas entre los 3 grupos (p>0,05). Conclusión: Las 3 resinas estudiadas presentaron un buen desempeño clínico a 18 meses sin mostrar diferencias significativas en las propiedades clínicas evaluadas.

RESUMEN Fundamento: el registro de la dimensión vertical oclusiva se complejiza en los pacientes con bruxismo en los que se impone restablecer la misma. Objetivo: determinar la utilidad clínica del registro cefalométrico de la dimensión vertical oclusiva en pacientes con bruxismo y trastornos temporomandibulares tributarios de tratamiento rehabilitador integral. Métodos: se desarrolló un estudio cuasi experimental antes y después con grupo control en la consulta del tercer nivel de atención estomatológica de Oclusión Dentaria y Articulación Temporomandibular en la Clínica Estomatológica Docente Ismael Clark y Mascaró, de septiembre de 2015 a mayo de 2018 en la provincia Camagüey. El universo de estudio lo conformaron los 73 pacientes remitidos con diagnóstico de bruxismo, presencia de facetas de desgastes, pérdida de la dimensión vertical oclusiva, signos y síntomas de trastornos temporomandibulares, desdentados parciales, mayores de 19 años, sin distinción en cuanto al sexo y desprovistos de procesos periodontales activos. La muestra no probabilística finita y heterogénea quedó representada por los primeros 50 pacientes asistidos que integraron en la misma proporción el grupo estudio y el grupo control. La investigación se realizó en tres momentos: organización, intervención y evaluación. Resultados: predominaron los pacientes con desgaste dentario tipo E 2, resaltó la dimensión vertical disminuida y la conservación de la dimensión vertical oclusiva a los seis meses de concluir el tratamiento rehabilitador integral. Conclusiones: útil se consideró el registro cefalométrico de la dimensión vertical oclusiva para pacientes con bruxismo y trastornos temporomandibulares.


ABSTRACT Background: the register of the occlusive vertical dimension is a complex issue in patients with bruxism who need to restore it. Objective: to determine the clinical use of the cephalometric register of the occlussive vertical dimension in patients with bruxism and temporomandibular disorders tributary of integral rehabilitator treatment. Methods: a quasi-experimental study was performed before and after with a control group in the third level consultation of dentistry assistance of Dental Occlusion and Temporomandibular Joint at Ismael Clark y Mascaró teaching dental clinic from September 2015 to May 2018 in Camagüey province. The universe of study consisted of 73 patients referred with a diagnosis of bruxism, presence of wear facets, loss of the occlusive vertical dimension, signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders, partial edentulous, older than 19 years old, regardless of sex and devoid of active periodontal processes. The finite and heterogenous non-probabilistic sample was represented by the first 50 assisted patients who made up the study group and the control one in the same proportion. The research was carried out in three moments: organization, intervention and assessment. Results: patients with wear facets type E 2 predominated, the diminished vertical dimension and the conservation of the occlusive vertical dimension and six months later of the integral rehabilitator treatment stand out. Conclusions: the cephalometric register of the occlussive vertical dimension for patients with bruxism and temporomandibular disorders was considered useful.

Introdução:Com o avanço da odontologia e dos materiais dentários, as resinas compostas têm sido amplamente utilizadas nas diversas variedades de restaurações, sejam elas diretas ou indiretas, devido às suas propriedades estéticas. No entanto, existem fatores significati-vos que contribuem para o fracasso das resinas compostas ao longo do tempo, dentre eles, o desgaste.Objetivo:Este trabalho consiste em uma revisão da literatura que objetiva discor-rer acerca dos principais mecanismos de desgaste da resina composta e suas consequências.Metodologia:O presente estudo trata-se de uma revisão da literatura narrativa realizada através de um levantamento bibliográfico de 53 artigos científicos, publicados entre 2010 e 2021. Tendo como fonte as seguintes bases de dados eletrônicos nacionais e internacionais: PubMed, SciELO e Google Acadêmico.Resultados: Perda de brilho, manchamento, infil-tração marginal, cárie recorrente e desgaste (desgaste adesivo, desgaste abrasivo, desgaste por fadiga e desgaste corrosivo) são os principais fatores que contribuem para o fracasso das resinas compostas ao longo do tempo. Conclusão:Os mecanismos de desgaste, sejam de natureza mecânica (física) e/ou química: desgaste adesivo, desgaste por atrito, desgaste abrasivo, desgaste por fadiga e desgaste corrosivo, assim como procedimentos de acaba-mento e polimento e hábitos parafuncionais implicam na perda gradual da resina composta e, consequentemente, geram acúmulo de biofilme, comprometimento gradual da função e estética, redução da dureza e resistência à flexão, que juntos resultam na diminuição da durabilidade clínica das restaurações e geram a necessidade de reparo e/ou substituição da restauração ao longo do tempo.


Introduction: With the advancement of dentistry and dental materials, composite resins have been widely used in different varieties of restorations, whether direct or indirect, due to their aesthetic properties. However, some calculated factors contribute to the failure of composite resins over time, including wear. Objective: This literature review aims to discuss the main wear factors of composite resin and its consequences. Methodology: This is a review of narrative literature carried out through a bibliographic survey of 53 scien-tific articles published between 2010 and 2021. The following national and international electronic databases were used: PubMed, SciELO, and Academic Google. Results: Loss of gloss, staining, marginal infiltration, recurrent caries, and wear (adhesive wear, abrasive wear, fatigue wear, and corrosive wear) are the main factors that contribute to the failure of composite resins over time. Conclusion: The wear mechanisms are of a physical and/or chemical nature: adhesive wear, friction wear, abrasive wear, fatigue wear, and corrosive wear, as well as finishing and polishing procedures, and parafunctional habits imply the gradual loss of the composite resin and, consequently, generate biofilm accumulation, gra-dual impairment of function and esthetics, reduction in hardness, and resistance to flexion, which together result in a decrease in the clinical durability of the restorations, generating the need for restoration and/or replacement over time.Keywords: Composite Resin. Abstract This study evaluated the influence of zirconia surface finishes on the wear of an enamel analogue. 40 zirconia discs were divided into four groups: control (without finish); glazed; polished; polished and glazed. All samples were subjected to wear against steatite antagonists. The specimens underwent roughness, topographic, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and wettability analyses. Quantitative wear measurements were performed on both steatites and discs. To measure wear of steatites the weight before and after the test and the diameter after the test were used. Profilometer measurements were performed to determine the wear on discs. Roughness, volumetric wear and mass loss were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (5%), while contact angle values were analyzed with One-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (5%). The polished group had the lowest roughness means, being statistically different from the other groups (p-value=0.0001). The glazed group presented the lowest steatite volumetric wear (p-value=0.0001), but not statistically different from the polished and glazed group, whereas these groups presented the highest zirconia volumetric wear, with statistically different (p-value=0.0002) compared to the others. SEM showed irregularities on the control groups surface, grooves on the polished group, and a homogeneous surface for the glazed group with a few pores. All groups presented contact angles lower than 90 degrees, characterizing hydrophilic surfaces. It can be concluded that just glazed zirconia caused less wear on the antagonist when compared to no finish and polished zirconia.


Resumo Este estudo avaliou a influência dos acabamentos superficiais da zircônia no desgaste de um análogo de esmalte. 40 discos de zircônia foram divididos em quatro grupos: controle (sem acabamento); glazeado; polido; polido e glazeado. Todas as amostras foram submetidas ao desgaste contra antagonistas de esteatita. Os espécimes foram submetidos à análise de rugosidade, topografia, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e análise de molhabilidade. Medidas quantitativas de desgaste foram realizadas nos antagonistas e nos discos de zircônia. Para medir o desgaste das esteatitas, foi mensurado o peso antes e depois do desgaste e o diâmetro após o teste. A análise de perfilometria mensurou o desgaste dos discos. Rugosidade, desgaste volumétrico e perda de massa foram analisados pelos testes de Kruskal-Wallis e Dunn (5%), enquanto os valores de ângulo de contato foram analisados com os testes One-way ANOVA e Tukey (5%). O grupo polido apresentou as menores médias de rugosidade, sendo estatisticamente diferente dos demais grupos (p-valor=0,0001). O grupo glazeado apresentou o menor desgaste volumétrico do antagonista (p-valor=0,0001), mas não foi estatisticamente diferente do grupo polido e glazeado, enquanto que esses grupos apresentaram o maior desgaste volumétrico da zircônia, com diferença estatisticamente diferente (p-valor=0,0002) em comparação com os outros. MEV mostrou irregularidades na superfície do grupo controle, sulcos no grupo polido e uma superfície homogênea para o grupo glazeado, com poucos poros. Todos os grupos apresentaram ângulos de contato menores que 90 graus, caracterizando superfícies hidrofílicas. Dentro das limitações deste estudo in vitro, é possível concluir que zircônia glazeada causou menos desgaste ao antagonista quando comparada a zircônia sem tratamento ou polida. Além disso, não foi encontrada diferença no desgaste do antagonista para os grupos de zirconia polida e controle.

Abstract: The objective of the study was to analyze the surface area (SA) of the wear caused by simulated chewing on human enamel and opposing restorative material, namely: composite resin (CR), porcelain fused to metal (PFM), lithium disilicate (LD), or monolithic zirconia (MZr). Forty-eight premolars were selected as enamel specimens and divided randomly into 4 groups (n = 48; n =12) used as antagonists in chewing simulation (250,000 loading cycles) against one of the four selected test materials. Enamel and material specimens were scanned and evaluated under digital microscope, and wear SA (mm2) were recorded. Descriptive statistics, paired t-test, one-way ANOVA, and post-hoc Tukey-HSD tests were used for statistics (p < 0.05). The smallest and largest SA were exhibited by enamel against LD (0.80 mm2) and PFM (1.74 mm2), respectively. PFM (3.48 mm2) showed the largest SA and CR (2.28 mm2) showed the smallest SA. Paired t-test for SA values showed significant difference (p < 0.05) in all wear comparisons between materials and enamel antagonists. The wear of materials were greater than that of their respective enamel antagonists (p < 0.05). One-way ANOVA of the logarithmic means of wear SA revealed significant differences (P<0.05). Post-hoc Tukey test revealed significance for PFM (p < 0.05) with other materials. Wear of all test materials was greater compared to the wear of enamel antagonists. PFM and LD caused the largest and the smallest enamel wear, respectively. CR, LD, and MZr are more resistant than PFM to wear after simulated chewing against enamel.

RESUMEN El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la resistencia a la compresión de un cemento de ionómero de vidrio (GIC) bajo la influencia de la protección del barniz y alimentos. Ochenta muestras cilíndricas de GIC fueron realizadas y se distribuyeron en cuatro grupos (G1, G2, G3, G4) de acuerdo con el alimento. Cada grupo se sub-dividió además en A y B, de acuerdo con la presencia o ausencia de protección de barniz. Las ocho muestras de cada subgrupo se almacenaron en agua destilada durante 30 días y recibieron los siguientes tratamientos durante 14 días: G2A: protección del barniz e inmersión en gaseosas, G2B: sin barniz e inmersión en gaseosas, G3A: protección del barniz e inmersión en jugo de naranja, G3B: sin protección de barniz e inmersión en jugo de naranja, G4A: protección de barniz e inmersión en yogurt, G4B: sin protección de barniz e inmersión en yogur. El procedimiento de inmersión se realizó tres veces al día, durante 15 minutos por 14 días. Las muestras del Subgrupo G1A (con barniz) y G1B (sin barniz) se usaron como controles y se almacenaron en agua destilada. Las muestras se sometieron a una prueba de resistencia a la compresión después del período de inmersión. Los resultados se analizaron usando ANOVA 2, prueba de Tukey (5%) y T de Student (5%). No hubo diferencias significativas entre los subgrupos, a excepción del subgrupo con protección de barniz e inmersión en jugo de naranja, que mostró una resistencia a la compresión GIC reducida.


ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the compressive strength of a glass ionomer cement (GIC) under the influence of varnish protection and dietary fluids. Eighty cylindrical test specimens were made from GIC and distributed into four groups (G1, G2, G3, G4) according to the dietary fluid. Each group was further divided into subgroups A and B according to the presence or absence of varnish protection. The eight subgroup samples were stored in distilled water for 30 days and received the following treatments for 14 days: G2A: varnish protection and immersion in soft drink, G2B: no varnish protection and immersion in soft drink, G3A: varnish protection and immersion in orange juice, G3B: no varnish protection and immersion in orange juice, G4A: varnish protection and immersion in yogurt, G4B: no varnish protection and immersion in yogurt. The immersion procedure was performed three times a day, for 15 minutes at a time, for a total of 14 days. The samples from subgroups G1A (with varnish) and G1B (without varnish) were used as controls and stored in distilled water only for 30 days. The samples were submitted to a compressive strength test after the immersion period. The results were analyzed using the ANOVA 2, Tukey test (5%) and Student's t-test (5%). There were no significant differences between the subgroups, except for the subgroup with varnish protection and immersion in orange juice, which showed reduced GIC compressive strength.

Abstract High viscous glass ionomer cement (GIC) has gained popularity as a restorative material; however, high wear is pointed as one of the major drawbacks of this material. Protective surface coatings were developed to protect GIC from water contamination with the additional advantage of occluding any surface cracks or porosities commonly found in this material, possibly resulting in an increased wear resistance of the restorations. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical wear of GIC approximal restorations in primary molars protected either with a nanofilled self-adhesive light-cured protective coating (NPC) or with petroleum jelly. Material and Methods: Approximal caries lesions in primary molars from 32 schoolchildren previously enrolled in another clinical trial were included in this investigation. GIC restorations were performed according to the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment approach and protected with either petroleum jelly or a NPC. Impressions of the restored hemiarch were done after 1 day and 6, 12, 24 and 36 months. The impressions were scanned in a 3-D appliance and the obtained images were superimposed using an appropriate computer software. Two-way ANOVA for repeated measures and Tukey's post-hoc test were used to analyze the wear of restorations (α=5%). Results: A significant difference was found between the two groups, with a wear protection offered by the application of a NPC. Conclusion: These results suggest that the application of a NPC has a protective effect on the clinical wear of approximal GIC restorations in primary teeth.

Abstract The relationship between wear resistance and filler size or filler loading was clarified for the universal resin composite; however, their relationship in flowable resin composites has not been clarified. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of filler size and filler loading on wear of experimental flowable resin composites by using a cyclic loading device. Material and Methods: Nine experimental flowable resin composites consisting of three different sizes (70, 200 and 400 nm) and loading (50, 55 and 60 wt%) of filler were prepared. Bowl-shaped cavities were prepared on a flat surface of ceramic blocks using a No. 149 regular cut diamond point. The cavities were treated with a silane coupling agent and an all-in-one adhesive and then filled with each experimental flowable resin composite. The restored surfaces were finished and polished with a 1500-grit silicon carbide paper. The specimens were subjected to an in vitro two-body wear test using a cyclic loading device. The localized worn surfaces were evaluated at 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, and 40,000 cycles using a computer-controlled three-dimensional measuring microscope (n=5). The volumetric wear loss of the materials was calculated automatically by the equipment. Data were statistically analyzed with two-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test. Results: Two-way ANOVA showed that the filler size significantly influenced wear volume (p<0.003), but the filler loading did not have a significant effect (p>0.05). A post hoc Tukey test detected significant differences in filler size between 70 nm and 400 nm, and 200 nm and 400 nm (p<0.007). Conclusion: The experimental flowable resin composite containing a mean filler size of 400 nm exhibited significantly lower wear resistance in two-body wear compared with those containing mean filler sizes of 200 nm or 70 nm.

Dental ceramics have been widely used because of aesthetic, but wear is still questioned. There are relates that ceramic surface is prone to degradation by acidulated fluoride, that can increase wear rates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of neutral and acidulated fluoride gel, used as preventive agents for professional use, at wear and compression strength of dental ceramics IPS e.max ZirPress (ZIR), IPS Empress Esthetic (EMP) e IPS Inline POM (POM). For this, 30 crowns and 30 disks were obtained by heat-pressing. Crowns and disks were submitted to two-body wear test at machine of mechanical loading, simulating occlusion, lateral movement and disocclusion. It was performed 300,000 cycles at 1Hz frequency under 20N load, to simulate 1 year of mastication. Samples were totally immersed during the test and were divided into three groups according to the gel used for immersion (n=10): control, neutral (sodium fluoride 2%) and acidulated (acidulated phosphate fluoride 1.23%). Samples (crowns and disks) were analyzed for vertical height loss after the test using, respectively, profile projector and stereomicroscope. Roughness of worn surface of crowns and disks was evaluated by laser confocal microscopy. Data of height loss and roughness were evaluated by two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni's test. A crown/disk of each group was analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy. After wear resistance tests, crowns were cemented to their abutments and submitted to compressive load at 30° angulation and 1mm/min speed. Type of failures was compared by qui-square test. Ceramic EMP worn less while ZIR worn more. Control gel worn more at crowns while acidulated gel worn more at disks. Surface roughness of samples tested at acidulated gel was significantly lower. Type of failures found at compression resistance tests was affected by ceramic type, but not by gel used. The results suggest that ceramic and fluoride gel affect wear and roughness of worn surface while type of failure is only affected by ceramic.

Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a resistência ao desgaste de duas resinas compostas contra ligas alternativas. Materiais e Métodos: Quinze amostras de corpo cônico foram obtidas das resinas Z250 e charisma (CHA). As amostras foram divididas em três grupos de acordo com o disco da liga a ser utilizada como antagonista: NíquelCromo (Ni-Cr), Cobalto-Cromo (Co-Cr) e titânio comercialmente puro (Ti cp). Os testes de desgaste foram realizados na velocidade de 265 ciclos/minuto e distância de 10mm, totalizando 40.000 ciclos. Antes e após os testes de desgaste, as amostras foram pesadas e tiveram seu perfil desenhado em projetor de perfil para avaliar a perda de peso e de altura, respectivamente. Resultados: Para a perda de peso e de altura, o desgaste de Z250 foi menor do que CHA para o antagonista de Co-Cr, mas maior para o Ti cp. CHA apresenta superfície mais regular, sem fendas, e aspecto semelhante para todos os antagonistas. Z250 apresentou algumas fendas, principalmente contra Ti cp e Ni-Cr. Conclusão: Baseado nos resultados deste estudo, concluiu-se que CHA é mais apropriada contra Ti cp, e Z250 para associação com liga de Co-Cr enquanto qualquer resina composta pode ser utilizada contra Ni-Cr. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate wear resistance of two composites resins against alternative alloys. Material and Methods: Fifteen stylus tips samples of composite resin were obtained for each resin Z250 and charisma (CHA). Samples were divided into three groups according to the disk of alloy to be used as antagonist: NickelChromium (Ni-Cr), Cobalt- Chromium (Co-Cr) and commercially pure titanium (cp Ti). Wear tests were performed at a speed of 265 cycles/min and distance of 10mm, in a total of 40,000 cycles. Before and after wear tests, samples were weighed and had their profile designed in an optical comparator to evaluate weight and height loss, respectively. Results: For weight and height loss, wear of Z250 was lower than CHA for Co-Cr antagonist, but greater for cp Ti. CHA presents a more regular surface without cracks and similar aspect for all antagonists. Z250 showed some cracks, mainly against cp Ti and Ni-Cr. Conclusion: Within the results of the present study, it was concluded that CHA is suitable against cp Ti, and Z250 for association with Co-Cr alloy while any composite resin can be used against Ni-Cr.(AU)

Increased surface roughness and wear of resin cements may cause failure of indirect restorations. The aim of this study was to evaluate quantitatively the surface roughness change and the vertical wear of four resin cements subjected to mechanical toothbrushing abrasion. Ten rectangular specimens (15 × 5 × 4 mm) were fabricated according to manufacturer instructions for each group (n = 10): Nexus 3, Kerr (NX3); RelyX ARC, 3M ESPE (ARC); RelyX U100, 3M ESPE (U100); and Variolink II, Ivoclar/Vivadent (VL2). Initial roughness (Ra, µm) was obtained through 5 readings with a roughness meter. Specimens were then subjected to toothbrushing abrasion (100,000 cycles), and further evaluation was conducted for final roughness. Vertical wear (µm) was quantified by 3 readings of the real profile between control and brushed surfaces. Data were subjected to analysis of variance, followed by Tukey’s test (p < 0.05). The Pearson correlation test was performed between the surface roughness change and wear (p < 0.05). The mean values of initial/final roughness (Ra, µm)/wear (µm) were as follows: NX3 (0.078/0.127/23.175); ARC (0.086/0.246/20.263); U100 (0.296/0.589/16.952); and VL2 (0.313/0.512/22.876). Toothbrushing abrasion increased surface roughness and wear of all resin cements tested, although no correlation was found between those variables. Vertical wear was similar among groups; however, it was considered high and may lead to gap formation in indirect restorations.

OBJECTIVES: The wear of telescopic crowns is a common problem often reducing the patient's satisfaction with the denture and resulting in a renewal of the denture. The study aims to compare the wear behavior of conical crowns using electroplated copings (group E ) with standard telescopic crowns with cast female parts (group C). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 10 conical crowns were milled for each group of a cast gold alloy. The specimen of group E had a conicity of 2º. The cast secondary crowns of group C had a 0º design. The electroplated coping was established by direct electroforming. An apparatus accomplishing 10,000 wear cycles performed the wear test. The retentive forces and the correlating distance during insertion and separation were measured. The wear test was separated in a start phase, an initial wear phase and the long term wear period. The retention force value and the force-distance integral of the first 0.33 mm of each cycle were calculated. RESULTS: The retentive forces were significantly higher for group E and the integrals were significantly lower for this group except the integral at cycle 10,000. The changes of retention force and integral did not differ significantly between both groups in all phases. The change of the integrals as well as the integral at the particular cycles showed higher interquartile distances for group C. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study the tested conical crowns showed clinically acceptable retentive properties. The values reached a range comparable to retentive elements tested in recent literature. The values of group C showed higher ranges. The force measured for group E was significantly higher than for group C but the integrals showed an opposite tendency. The results indicate that an exclusive analysis of the force is not sufficient as the integral is not equivalent to the force although it describes the retentive property of the system in a better way than the force over a distance is described. Both systems seem to be suitable for clinical practice.

Objective - This study evaluated the influence of toothbrushing and thermal cycling on surface roughness and weight alterations of four different composite resins. Methods - Five specimens of two nanofilled composites (Filtek Supreme and Esthet X), one submicron composite(spherical filler) (Palfique Estelite) and one microhybrid composite (irregular filler) (Filtek Z250/3M ESPE), were prepared according to the manufacturer's directions. Each specimen was thermal cycled 1,200 times and subjected to 40,000 toothbrushing cycles. At baseline and after thermal cycling and tootbrushing cycles, surface roughness and weight were determined. Results - After thermal cycling and toothbrush abrasion no statistically significant difference in weight was found, however, the Esthet X and Palfique Estelite showed decrease in weight while Filtek Supreme and Z250 showed increase in weight. The surface roughness increased after thermal cycling and toothbrushing (p<0.01). The spherical submicron filler (Palfique Estelite) showed the smoothest surface. Conclusion - According to the methodology applied in this study, all resins studied showed resistance to abrasion, however, Palfique Estelite after the tests showed the smoothest surface.


Objetivo - Este estudo avaliou a influência da escovação e alterações térmicas quanto às alterações superficiais de rugosidade e peso de quatro diferentes resinas compostas. Métodos - Foram empregadas duas resinas de nanopartículas (Filtek Supreme e Esthet X), uma microparticulada de partículas esféricas (Palfique Estelite) e uma microhíbrida de partículas irregulares (Filtek Z250). Foram preparados cinco corpos de prova para cada material de acordo com as instruções do fabricante. Cada corpo de prova foi ciclado 1.200 vezes e submetido a 40.000 ciclos de escovação. O peso e rugosidade da superfície foram determinados antes e após os ciclos térmicos e de escovação. Resultados - Esthet X e Palfique Estelite mostraram diminuição do peso enquanto que Filtek Supreme e Z250 apresentaram aumento, no entanto, não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa após ciclagem térmica e de escovação. A rugosidade superficial aumentou em todas as resinas compostas testadas após a ciclagem térmica e de escovação, sendo que a resina microparticulada de partículas esféricas (Palfique Estelite) apresentou ao final dos testes a superfície mais lisa (p<0.01). Conclusão - De acordo com a metodologia aplicada nesta pesquisa, todas as resinas compostas estudadas apresentaram resistência à abrasão, no entanto, a Palfique Estelite apresentou ao final dos testes a maior lisura superficial.

Neste estudo, foi avaliada a resistência ao desgaste abrasivo de uma resina composta, através de três diferentes métodos: do disco retificado, por escovação e do nanodurômetro. Nos dois primeiros métodos, foram utilizados 20 espécimes da resina Filtek Z250 (10 da cor Incisal e 10 da cor C4, ambos fotopolimerizados por 30 segundos cada) e 10 de polimetilmetacrilato (PMMA), atuando estes últimos como padrão de referência. Para os ensaios com o nanodurômetro, foi utilizado apenas um espécime de cada cor, assim como um único de PMMA, em cujas superfícies planas foram efetuadas sete medições, o que foi considerado equivalente a sete espécimes. No método do disco retificado, cada espécime de resina composta era confeccionado diretamente numa cavidade semicircular, localizada na periferia de um disco-suporte; os espécimes de PMMA consistiam em discos constituídos exclusivamente por este material; o desgaste de cada espécime era promovido por um disco de porcelana e seu conseqüente deslocamento era detectado por um palpador; assim, a taxa de desgaste era estabelecida, expressa em milímetros cúbicos por newton por segundo (mm3/N.s). No método de escovação, cada espécime cilíndrico ficava preso numa placa metálica, a qual era fixada no interior da máquina de escovação; sua perda de massa (em miligramas) era verificada através de uma balança analítica. No método do nanodurômetro, existiu apenas um espécime ci líndrico para cada condição, em cuja face plana superior eram feitos sete sulcos (equivalentes a sete espécimes); o coeficiente de atrito permitia estabelecer a respectiva resistência ao desgaste. Para cada método utilizado, os dados foram tratados estatisticamente, através de análise de variância (ANOVA) e de teste de Tukey. Abrasive wear of a composite resin, using three different methods (ground disc, toothbrushing and nanodurometer). The aim at this study was to evaluate the resistance to abrasive wear of a composite resin, using three different methods: ground disc, toothbrushing and nanodurometer. At the first two methods were employed 20 specimens of Filtek Z250 composite resin (10 of Incisal and 10 of C4, both the colors cured for 30 seconds each one) and 10 of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), the latter acting as a reference standard. For the tests with the nanodurometer it was used only one specimen of each color, as well as just one of PMMA, in whose flat surfaces seven measurements were made, what was considered equivalent to seven specimens. At the ground disc method, each composite resin specimen was directly made on a semicircular cavity located on the periphery of a supporting disc; PMMA specimens consisted of discs made up exclusively with this material; the wear of each specimen was promoted by a ceramic disc and its consequent displacement was detected by a sensor; thus, the wear rate was established, expressed in cubic millimeters per newton per second (mm3/N.s). At the toothbrushing method, each cylindrical specimen was trapped in a metal plate, which was fixed inside the machine brushing; its weight loss (in milligrams) was verified by an analytical balance. At the nanodurometer method, there was only one cylindrical specimen for each condition, in whose flat upper face seven grooves were made (what was equivalent to seven specimens); the coefficient of friction was used to establish its wear resistance. For each method, data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test. It could be concluded that, by ground disc method, materials wear rate (in mm3/N.s) was Incisal (0.6807) > C4 (0.5012) > PMMA (0.1439); by brushing method, materials wear rate (in mg) was 5.40 for Incisal, 9.35 for C4 and 5.88 for PMMA, without significant difference...
