RESUMO

The present study aimed to investigate the moderating effect of perceived punishment on the relationship between the Dark Triad personality traits and corruption in Brazil (N = 118) and the United Kingdom (N = 130). Participants answered the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen Scale, as well as measures of corruption and perceived punishment. It was found that punishment predicts corruption in both countries. Regarding the Dark Triad traits, a relationship between Machiavellianism and corruption was identified in Brazil and the United Kingdom, although an interaction with punishment was identified only in Brazil. Moreover, psychopathy had no relationship with corruption or punishment in either country. A direct relationship was found only in Brazil on narcissism, although the interaction term was significant in both countries. In general, it was identified that perceived punishment and the dark triad traits contribute to the understanding of corruption, despite some differences in the results between Brazil and the United Kingdom.

The aims of this study were (i) to evaluate the effect of density, lineage, age, and time of day on dorsal surface temperature and (ii) to evaluate the effect of density and lineage on performance and carcass condemnations in broiler grillers. The evaluations were carried out in barns with the Dark House system, with two densities, 17 and 19 chickens/m2 and two lineages, Cobb and Ross. The dorsal surface temperature of the chickens was measured by infrared thermography at 7, 14, 21, 23, 25 and 27 days of age, four times a day. The average daily weight gain, feed conversion, mortality, partial carcass condemnations, as well as those due to arthritis and dermatosis were also evaluated. The highest dorsal surface temperatures were observed in Cobbs housed at a density of 17 chickens/m2, and in Ross housed at a density of 19 chickens/m2. Cobbs housed at a 17 chickens/m2 density showed the lowest feed conversion compared to Ross at the same density. Ross showed higher dorsal surface temperatures when compared to Cobbs at 14, 21, and 27 days. Cobbs showed higher percentages of partial carcass condemnation and arthritis compared to Ross. The higher density of broiler grillers in the Dark House system does not influence the dorsal surface temperature, performance, dermatosis, arthritis, and partial carcass condemnations.

RESUMO

Appearance modification practices are ubiquitous, serving to enhance physical attractiveness and accrue social advantages, including increased desirability as a potential mate. Facial cosmetics are frequently used for appearance modification, yet individual differences in makeup usage remain understudied. While makeup usage in women has been linked to traits like narcissism and extraversion, the broader association with Dark Triad traits and how personality influences makeup application across diverse social contexts were less explored. Here we examined these relationships in 1,410 Brazilian women (Mage = 29.9, SD = 10.35), who completed online Big Five and Dark Triad personality measures, reported their usual makeup usage habits, and detailed their makeup usage across different social scenarios. Results revealed makeup usage was positively associated with narcissism and extraversion, and negatively with psychopathy. Additionally, women used less makeup when alone (at home, exercises) and more in social settings, particularly for the first date. However, women with higher narcissism and neuroticism showed larger differences among low and high makeup usage situations, while individuals with higher psychopathy used makeup in similar frequencies among different situations. Further, (1) overall greater users of makeup scored higher on narcissism, conscientiousness, and agreeableness; (2) average users displayed lower psychopathy; and (3) lesser users reported lower narcissism and higher psychopathy. These findings underscore the nuanced relationship between makeup usage and personality, particularly highlighting the influence of narcissism. These findings contribute to the interplay between personality traits and makeup usage, considering interindividual differences and intraindividual variation in understanding cosmetic behaviors among women.

RESUMO

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is composed of a series of peptides, receptors, and enzymes that play a pivotal role in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis. Among the most important players in this system are the angiotensin-II and angiotensin-(1-7) peptides. Our group has recently demonstrated that alamandine (ALA), a peptide with structural and functional similarities to angiotensin-(1-7), interacts with cardiomyocytes, enhancing contractility via the Mas-related G protein-coupled receptor member D (MrgD). It is currently unknown whether this modulation varies along the distinct phases of the day. To address this issue, we assessed the ALA-induced contractility response of cardiomyocytes from mice at four Zeitgeber times (ZTs). At ZT2 (light phase), ALA enhanced cardiomyocyte shortening in an MrgD receptor-dependent manner, which was associated with nitric oxide (NO) production. At ZT14 (dark phase), ALA induced a negative modulation on the cardiomyocyte contraction. ß-Alanine, an MrgD agonist, reproduced the time-of-day effects of ALA on myocyte shortening. NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester, an NO synthase inhibitor, blocked the increase in fractional shortening induced by ALA at ZT2. No effect of ALA on myocyte shortening was observed at ZT8 and ZT20. Our results show that ALA/MrgD signaling in cardiomyocytes is subject to temporal modulation. This finding has significant implications for pharmacological approaches that combine chronotherapy for cardiac conditions triggered by disruption of circadian rhythms and hormonal signaling.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Alamandine, a member of the renin-angiotensin system, serves critical roles in cardioprotection, including the modulation of cardiomyocyte contractility. Whether this effect varies along the day is unknown. Our results provide evidence that alamandine via receptor MrgD exerts opposing actions on cardiomyocyte shortening, enhancing, or reducing contraction depending on the time of day. These findings may have significant implications for the development and effectiveness of future cardiac therapies.

RESUMO

This study aimed to detect, isolate and to characterize by molecular methods a relapsing fever group (RFG) Borrelia in white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) from Brazil. During 2015-2018, when opossums (Didelphis spp.) were captured in six municipalities of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, molecular analyses revealed the presence of a novel RFG Borrelia sp. in the blood of seven opossums (Didelphis albiventris), out of 142 sampled opossums (4.9% infection rate). All seven infected opossums were from a single location (Ribeirão Preto municipality). In a subsequent field study in Ribeirão Preto during 2021, two new opossums (D. albiventris) were captured, of which one contained borrelial DNA in its blood. Macerated tissues from this infected opossum were inoculated into laboratory animals (rodents and rabbits) and two big-eared opossums (Didelphis aurita), which had blood samples examined daily via dark-field microscopy. No spirochetes were visualized in the blood of the laboratory animals. Contrastingly, spirochetes were visualized in the blood of the two D. aurita opossums between 12 and 25 days after inoculation. Blood samples from these opossums were used for a multi-locus sequencing typing (MLST) based on six borrelial loci. Phylogenies inferred from MLST genes positioned the sequenced Borrelia genotype into the RFG borreliae clade basally to borreliae of the Asian-African group, forming a monophyletic group with another Brazilian isolate, "Candidatus B. caatinga". Based on this concatenated phylogenetic analysis, which supports that the new borrelial isolate corresponds to a putative new species, we propose the name "Candidatus Borrelia mimona".

RESUMO

Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is the most common type of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus. It is more frequent in adult women, particularly black race. Scalp DLE has an earlier onset and a more severe clinical course in black patients compared to Caucasians. Nevertheless, studies on this population remain scarce. The aim of this study was to review the literature and summarize the most frequent trichoscopic findings of scalp DLE among patients with a higher phototype. The main trichoscopic findings of DLE on black scalp are interruption of the honeycomb pattern, reduction, or absence of pinpoint white dots, keratotic follicular plugs and peripilar casts, blue-gray dots in a speckled pattern, and large tortuous arboriform vessels. Knowledge of these and other changes enables an early diagnosis of these individuals, preventing cicatricial sequelae and reducing its impact on quality of life.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate for the first time the temporal dynamic changes in early postmortem proteome of normal and high ultimate pH (pHu) beef samples from the same cattle using a shotgun proteomics approach. Ten selected carcasses classified as normal (pHu < 5.8; n = 5) or high (pHu ≥ 6.2; n = 5) pHu beef from pasture-finished Nellore (Bos taurus indicus) bulls were sampled from Longissimus thoracis muscle at 30 min, 9 h and 44 h postmortem for proteome comparison. The temporal proteomics profiling quantified 863 proteins, from which 251 were differentially abundant (DAPs) between high and normal pHu at 30 min (n = 33), 9 h (n = 181) and 44 h (n = 37). Among the myriad interconnected pathways regulating pH decline during postmortem metabolism, this study revealed the pivotal role of energy metabolism, cellular response to stress, oxidoreductase activity and muscle system process pathways throughout the early postmortem. Twenty-three proteins overlap among postmortem times and may be suggested as candidate biomarkers to the dark-cutting condition development. The study further evidenced for the first time the central role of ribosomal proteins and histones in the first minutes after animal bleeding. Moreover, this study revealed the disparity in the mechanisms underpinning the development of dark-cutting beef condition among postmortem times, emphasizing multiple dynamic changes in the muscle proteome. Therefore, this study revealed important insights regarding the temporal dynamic changes that occur in early postmortem of high and normal muscle pHu beef, proposing specific pathways to determine the biological mechanisms behind dark-cutting determination.

RESUMO

Haff disease typically develops after eating contaminated marine or freshwater species, especially fish. Despite still having an unknown etiology, recent reports have suggested its possible correlation with palytoxins. Therefore, the present work aimed to optimize and perform a validation of a sensitive method using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for the analysis of palytoxin and some of its analogs, with the main purpose of investigating their presence in marine and freshwater food samples associated with Haff disease in Brazil. The method optimization was performed using a central composite rotatable design and fish samples fortified with the palytoxin standard. Then, the optimized method was validated for different food matrices, including freshwater and marine fish, mollusks, and crustaceans. The sample preparation involved a solid-liquid extraction using methanol and water, solid-phase extraction using Strata-X cartridges, and on-column palytoxin oxidation. The detection of the main oxidized fragments (amino and amide aldehydes) was achieved by LC-MS/MS with electrospray ionization in positive mode, using a C18 column, as well as acetonitrile and water as mobile phases, both acidified with 0.1 % of formic acid. After optimization and validation, the etiological investigation involved the analysis of 16 Brazilian Haff disease-related food samples (in natura and leftover meals) from 2022. The method was demonstrated to be appropriate for quantitative analysis of freshwater and marine species. So far, it has proven to be one of the most sensitive methods related to palytoxin detection (LOD 10 µg/kg), being able to work in a range that includes the provisional ingestion limit (30 µg/kg). Regarding the Haff disease-related samples analysis, there is a strong indication of palytoxin contamination since the amino aldehyde (common fragment for all palytoxins) was detected in 15 of the 16 samples. Selected results were confirmed using liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS).

RESUMO

Nanoporous gold electrodes are of great interest in electroanalytical chemistry, because of their unusual activity and large surface area. The electrochemical activity can be further improved by coating with molecular catalysts such as the tetraruthenated cobalt-tetrapyridylporphyrazines investigated in this work. The plasmonic enhancement of the scattered light at the nanoholes and borders modifies the electrode's optical characteristics, improving the transmission through the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect. When monitored by hyperspectral dark-field and confocal Raman microscopy, this effect allows probing of the porphyrazine species at the plasmonic nanholes, improving the understanding of the chemically modified gold electrodes.

RESUMO

Background: Previous research has suggested that manipulation and callousness are central to Dark Triad traits, but it has not identified which specific manifestations are expressed across various countries. Objective: This study aimed to identify the core and overlapping manifestations of Dark Triad traits across 10 countries. Methods: We used the Short Dark Triad (SD3) scale and assessed a sample of 8093 participants (59.7% women, M(age) = 32.68 years). For graphical representation, the spinglass algorithm was applied to understand the cluster distribution among Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and subclinical narcissism traits. Centrality indices were used to identify the most influential items, and the clique-percolation algorithm was employed to detect shared attributes among multiple Dark Triad items. Results: Straightforward SD3-21 items demonstrated better interpretability as aversive traits within the broader system. Items with higher centrality values were those related to short-term verbal manipulation from the psychopathy domain, clever manipulation, strategic revenge-seeking from Machiavellianism, and narcissistic motivations for connecting with significant individuals. The most predicted items were linked to planned revenge, using information against others from Machiavellianism, short-term psychopathic verbal manipulation, and narcissistic belief of specialness based on external validation. Items like short-term verbal manipulation had overlaps with both psychopathy and narcissism clusters, while clever manipulation overlapped with Machiavellianism and psychopathy. Conclusion: This cross-cultural study highlights the central role of verbal manipulation within the Dark Triad traits, along with identifying overlapping items among traits measured using straightforward SD3 scale items. In line with our findings, future research that incorporates a wide range of cultural contexts is encouraged to establish the consistency of these findings with the SD3 Scale or alternative measures.

RESUMO

Heat stress is an abiotic factor that affects the photosynthetic parameters of plants. In this study, we examined the photosynthetic mechanisms underlying the rapid response of tobacco plants to heat stress in a controlled environment. To evaluate transient heat stress conditions, changes in photochemical, carboxylative, and fluorescence efficiencies were measured using an infrared gas analyser (IRGA Licor 6800) coupled with chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements. Our findings indicated that significant disruptions in the photosynthetic machinery occurred at 45 °C for 6 h following transient heat treatment, as explained by 76.2% in the principal component analysis. The photosynthetic mechanism analysis revealed that the dark respiration rate (Rd and Rd*CO2) increased, indicating a reduced potential for carbon fixation during plant growth and development. When the light compensation point (LCP) increased as the light saturation point (LSP) decreased, this indicated potential damage to the photosystem membrane of the thylakoids. Other photosynthetic parameters, such as AMAX, VCMAX, JMAX, and ΦCO2, also decreased, compromising both photochemical and carboxylative efficiencies in the Calvin-Benson cycle. The energy dissipation mechanism, as indicated by the NPQ, qN, and thermal values, suggested that a photoprotective strategy may have been employed. However, the observed transitory damage was a result of disruption of the electron transport rate (ETR) between the PSII and PSI photosystems, which was initially caused by high temperatures. Our study highlights the impact of rapid temperature changes on plant physiology and the potential acclimatisation mechanisms under rapid heat stress. Future research should focus on exploring the adaptive mechanisms involved in distinguishing mutants to improve crop resilience against environmental stressors.

RESUMO

This study explores whether gender differences influence the components of the Dark Triad of personality and moral disengagement on the manifestations of dishonest academic behavior in Peruvian university students. Moreover, it evaluates how moral disengagement mediates the effect that the Dark Triad components have on academic dishonesty. The participants were 591 university students, aged between 18 and 40 years (women = 71.7 %; Mage = 21.5; SDage = 3.60), to whom the Dirty Dozen Dark Triad, the Propensity to Morally Disengage Scale, and the Scale of Academic Dishonesty, which has 3 dimensions (cheating on exams, plagiarism, and falsification) were applied. The results reveal that only Machiavellianism has a significant and consistent influence on all dimensions of academic dishonesty, in both men and women, while psychopathy influences the dimension of plagiarism in both men and women and falsification only in men. In addition, moral disengagement affects falsification in both groups, cheating on exams only in the men's group, and plagiarism in the women's group. Finally, the mediating role of moral disengagement between the effect of the Dark Triad and the manifestations of academic dishonesty was not demonstrated.

RESUMO

ABSTRACTObjetives: Omega-3 (n3) fatty acids have been studied as an option to alleviate the harmful effects of obesity. However, its role in obesity-related behavioral changes is still controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of n3 on behavior and neuroinflammation in obese animals. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control diet (CT), CT+n3, cafeteria diet (CAF), and CAF+n3. Diet was administered for 13 weeks, and n3 was supplemented during the last 5 weeks. Metabolic and biochemical parameters were evaluated, as well as anxiety-like behaviors. Immunoblots were conducted in the animals' cerebral cortex and hippocampus to assess changes in neuroinflammatory markers. Results: CAF-fed animals showed higher weight gain, visceral adiposity, fasting glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin levels, and n3 improved the lipid profile and restored insulin sensitivity. CAF-fed rats showed anxiety-like behaviors in the open field and light-dark box tasks but not in the contextual aversive conditioning. Omega-3 did not exert any effect on these behaviors. Regarding neuroinflammation, diet and supplementation acted in a region-specific manner. In the hippocampus, CAF reduced claudin-5 expression with no effect of n3, indicating a brain-blood barrier disruption following CAF. Furthermore, in the hippocampus, the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4) were reduced in treated obese animals. However, n3 could not reverse the TLR-4 expression increase in the cerebral cortex.Discussion: Although n3 may protect against some neuroinflammatory manifestations in the hippocampus, it does not seem sufficient to reverse the increase in anxiolytic manifestations caused by CAF.

RESUMO

The continuous multiple tube reactor (CMTR) has been developed as a promising technology to maximize biohydrogen production (BHP) by dark fermentation (DF) by preventing excess biomass accumulation, leading to suboptimum values of specific organic loading rates (SOLR). However, previous experiences failed to achieve stable and continuous BHP in this reactor, as the low biomass retention capacity in the tube region limited controlling the SOLR. This study goes beyond the evaluation of the CMTR for DF by inserting grooves in the inner wall of the tubes to ensure better cell attachment. The CMTR was monitored in 4 assays at 25ºC using sucrose-based synthetic effluent. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) was fixed at 2 h, while the COD varied between 2-8 g L-1 to obtain organic loading rates in the 24 - 96 g COD L-1 d-1. Long-term (90 d) BHP was successfully attained in all conditions due to the improved biomass retention capacity. Optimal values for the SOLR (4.9 g COD g-1 VSS d-1) were observed when applying up to 48 g COD L-1 d-1, in which BHP was maximized. These patterns indicate a favorable balance between biomass retention and washout was naturally achieved. The CMTR looks promising for continuous BHP and is exempt from additional biomass discharge strategies.

Few studies in South America have examined personality traits that had an impact at an individual and social level during the pandemic. The aim of the study was to identify the most central variables and partial associations in a network among the dark triad, trait emotional intelligence, social distancing during the pandemic, and demographic variables. Age was hypothesized as a possible central variable in the network, and a negative relationship was found between the dark triad and social distancing and trait emotional intelligence, except for narcissism. A non-probabilistic sampling method was used, with 311 adults (M = 33.95 years, 65 % women). Online surveys as the Dirty Dozen Dark Triad, Trait Meta-Mood Scale, and demographic data were used. Emotional attention played a key role in linking the dark triad and emotional intelligence. Moreover, it favored adherence to social distancing, while the reverse was observed with Machiavellianism. Finally, dark triad and emotional intelligence domains showed a negative association, except for narcissism, which had a positive connection with emotional attention. In summary, during the pandemic, assessing emotional attention was crucial to comprehend social aversive motivations and promote adherence to social distancing. In contrast, Machiavellianism, associated with the youth, needs further investigation and did not contribute to public health social norms.

RESUMO

This study evaluated Brazilian consumer perceptions of beef with different pH values at 48 h post-mortem (pHu) through sensory analysis. A total of 138 consumers evaluated raw and grilled steaks. The steaks were divided according to their pHu (normal pH < 5.8, atypical darkness, firmness, and dryness [DFD] > 5.8 pH < 6, and typical DFD pH ≥ 6). There was no difference in the visual evaluation of raw steaks or purchase intention. Evaluation of the grilled steaks showed that consumers preferred typical DFD steaks in terms of tenderness, and there was a tendency for the same behavior in terms of juiciness. No differences were observed in other evaluated parameters. Cluster analysis identified three consumer segments for visual evaluation, indicating a preference for steaks with higher pHu in terms of freshness. Additionally, four segments were identified for evaluation, with some groups expressing a preference for higher pHu meat in terms of freshness appearance, tenderness liking, and overall liking. The developed regression models for overall liking and purchase intention exhibited favorable adjustment indices, with r2 values of 0.86 and 0.57, respectively, for raw steaks and 0.90 for grilled steaks for in overall liking. Regression models indicated a strong influence of color and freshness appearance, in addition to tenderness liking and juiciness liking, on the overall liking scores of consumers. These results indicate that Brazilian consumers do not dislike dark cutting and, despite differentiating their greater tenderness, do not show a preference between the different pHu values.

The present study aimed to verify the mediating role of social dominance orientation in the relationship between the core of the dark triad and environmentalism. Participants were 305 people aged between 18 and 77 years old (Mage = 26.4; SDage = 11.25; 59.7 % women). The results indicated that among the 8 personality traits analyzed, considering the Big Five and Dark Triad models, only psychopathy was correlated with environmentalism, which was moderately correlated with social dominance orientation. Considering that the three dark traits shared empathic deficits, low agreeableness and honesty/humility, the effect of the dark triad core was tested for the prediction of environmentalism, observing direct effects. However, such direct effects did not remain statistically significant with the inclusion of social dominance orientation, configuring a complete mediation, since the dark core indirectly predicted environmentalism. Therefore, it is observed that social dominance orientation works as a mechanism that allows people with dark traits not to worry about the environment, exploiting it for their own benefit.

RESUMO

Plants associated with mycorrhizal fungi has the ability to establish on metal-contaminated soils playing an important role in phytoremediation programs. The objective of this study was to examine the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (spores density, diversity, indicator species, and root colonization) and dark septate endophytic fungi (DSE fungal root colonization) in three metal accumulator plants (Sorghum halepense, Bidens pilosa, and Tagetes minuta) growing in soils with high Pb content. The Pb content in AMF spores and plant biomass were also assessed. Rhizosphere soil samples were taken from the three dominant plant species at six study sites surrounding the abandoned Pb smelter and one uncontaminated site. The three studied plants were colonized by AMF and DSE fungi. A total of 24 AMF morphospecies were present in the Pb-contaminated areas. The AMF indicator species in the control site (non-contaminated area) was Funneliformis mosseae and in the most contaminated site were Gigaspora decipiens and Denticustata biornata. There was an increase in mycorrhizal variables such as the number of AMF vesicles, spore number, Pb content in AMF spores and plant biomass and DSE colonization (in Sorghum) with increasing soil Pb contamination, but a decrease in AMF diversity and richness was found. For upcoming soil restoration projects, it is crucial to understand the mycorrhizal fungi as well as the plant community that has adapted to the highly contaminated environment.

RESUMO

Soil salinity is a limiting factor in crop productivity. Inoculating crops with microorganisms adapted to salt stress is an alternative to increasing plant salinity tolerance. Few studies have simultaneously propagated arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate fungi (DSF) using different sources of native inoculum from halophyte plants and evaluated their effectiveness. In alfalfa plants as trap culture, this study assessed the infectivity of 38 microbial consortia native from rhizosphere soil (19) or roots (19) from six halophyte plants, as well as their effectiveness in mitigating salinity stress. Inoculation with soil resulted in 26-56% colonization by AMF and 12-32% by DSF. Root inoculation produced 10-56% and 8-24% colonization by AMF and DSF, respectively. There was no difference in the number of spores of AMF produced with both inoculum types. The effective consortia were selected based on low Na but high P and K shoot concentrations that are variable and are relevant for plant nutrition and salt stress mitigation. This microbial consortia selection may be a novel and applicable model, which would allow the production of native microbial inoculants adapted to salinity to diminish the harmful effects of salinity stress in glycophyte plants in the context of sustainable agriculture.
