RESUMO

Organotin compounds are persistent pollutants and are considered chemicals of high environmental concern. In the present study, the distribution and degradation of tributyltin were evaluated in field sediments and through an ex situ experiment. For this, sediment samples from two locations were analysed: Luis Piedrabuena Harbour, with higher maritime traffic, and Cerro Avanzado, which receives less impact from anthropogenic activities. The results indicated that pollution levels at Luis Piedrabuena Harbour have decreased compared with studies performed 9 years ago for the same area. On the contrary, traces of organotin compounds have been found for the first time at Cerro Avanzado. Moreover, the butyltin degradation index indicated that organotin compounds undergo an advanced degradation process in the collected samples at both sites. Ex situ experiments revealed a limited capacity of sediments to retain tributyltin, and suggested an active role of bioturbation activity in the degradation of these compounds. In addition, visualisation using chemometric techniques (principal components analysis) allowed a simpler analysis of two sediment characteristics: the degree of contamination and the degradation levels of organotin compounds.

El objetivo de este estudio fue establecer y mantener activo un programa de control de calidad semanal en un sistema de mamografía digital de campo completo (FFDM) con tomosíntesis digital de mama (DBT) para optimizar la relación dosis-calidad de imagen en el tamizaje mamográfico y en el diagnóstico de las patologías de la mama, así como determinar la sensibilidad y especificidad en el periodo 2019-2022. Las imágenes mamográficas fueron obtenidas con el maniquí del Colegio Americano de Radiología (ACR) como parte del programa de control de calidad y con el uso de un dosímetro se determinó la dosis glandular media (DGM). También se midieron otras variables que afectan calidad de imagen y dosis. La imagen optimizada tiene el potencial de reducir la tasa de mortalidad por cáncer de mama debido a que el cáncer de mama es un problema de salud pública en los países en vías de desarrollo. Los resultados generales en el periodo del estudio se ilustran con graficas e intervalos de confianza al 95% (IC, 95%), además los valores numéricos se expresan en términos del error estándar de la media con 95% de confianza. Para mamografía digital de campo completo (FFDM): mAs = 160 ± 3.74, kVp = 28, dosis glandular media (DGM) = 1.69 ± 0.02 mGy, razón señal-ruido (SNR) = 62.20 ± 0.67, razón contraste-ruido (CNR) = 12.16 ± 0.15 y para tomosíntesis digital de mama (DBT): mAs = 61.42 ± 1.14, kVp = 29, dosis glandular media (DGM) = 1.54 ± 0.01 mGy. Los valores de las diferentes variables fueron determinados de acuerdo a la metodología del fabricante (Hologic, 2011). Los valores de la sensibilidad y la especificidad fueron para mamografía digital de campo completo (FFDM) sensibilidad 91% y especificidad 94% y para tomosíntesis digital de mama (DBT) sensibilidad 94% y especificidad 97%. Los resultados de dosis y calidad de imagen en ambas modalidades mamografía digital de campo completo (FFDM) y tomosíntesis digital de mama (DBT) muestran que el programa de control de calidad se mantuvo operativo durante el estudio manteniendo una relación optimizada entre dosis y calidad de imagen


The objective of this study was to establish and maintain active a weekly quality control program in a full-field digital mammography (FFDM) system with digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) to optimize the dose-image quality relationship in mammographic screening and in diagnosis of breast pathologies, as well as determining sensitivity and specificity in the period 2019-2022. Mammographic images were obtained with the American College of Radiology (ACR) phantom as part of the quality control program and the mean glandular dose (DGM) was determined with a dosimeter. Other variables that affect image quality and dose were also measured. Optimized imaging (image quality-dose) has the potential to reduce the breast cancer mortality rate because breast cancer is a public health problem in developing countries. The general results in the study period are illustrated with graphs and 95% confidence intervals (CI, 95%), in addition the numerical values are expressed in terms of the standard error of the mean with 95% confidence, For full field digital mammography (FFDM): mAs = 160.3 ± 3.74, kVp = 28, mean glandular dose (DGM) = 1.69 ± 0.02 mGy, signalto-noise ratio (SNR) = 62.20 ± 0.67, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) = 12.16 ± 0.15 and for tomosynthesis digital breast (DBT): mAs = 61.42 ± 1.14, kVp = 29, mean glandular dose (DGM) = 1.54 ± 0.01 mGy. The values of the different variables were determined according to the manufacturer's methodology. Mammography facility sensitivity and specificity values were determined using pathology results during the study. For FFDM mode they were sensitivity 91% and specificity 94% and for DBT mode they were sensitivity 94% and specificity 97%. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of time on suicidal behavior, associated risk factors, and protective factors in early Mexican adolescents. Method: With a two-year longitudinal design, which included 18 of 34 adolescents who had previously participated in a DBT skills training program (DBT-PAHSE). The study evaluated ideation, suicide attempt, depression, emotional dysregulation, and psychological resources. Results: We observed differentiating significant differences over time in emotional dysregulation (F = 2.36 p = 0.04, η2= 0.12, ß = 0.72), affective resources (F = 3.94, p = 0.01, η2 = 0.18, ß = 0.82), and suicidal ideation. (F = 2.55, p = 0.03, η2= 0.13, ß = 0.77). In conclusion, the DBT-PAHSE program prevented deaths by suicide. It showed a reduction in emotional dysregulation up to two years after the end of treatment and maintained an increase in emotional and social resources. However, improvements are required to reduce depression over time and strengthen psychological resources.

While dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) appears effective for some psychiatric conditions commonly associated with alexithymia, it is unclear whether DBT improves difficulties experienced by alexithymic individuals. This review investigated the current evidence on the effectiveness of DBT-based interventions in improving alexithymia. A qualitative synthesis of studies that investigated the efficacy of DBT on self-reported alexithymia was performed, identifying eligible studies using EBSCO/Essentials, Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and PsychINFO databases. Eight studies were identified. Overall, the results were inconclusive due to the heterogeneity of the studies but suggest that DBT-based interventions may be associated with self-reported decreases in alexithymia and increases in the ability to identify emotional states. The literature is limited by significant methodological problems, such as the low number of controlled trials, small samples, and high variability between DBT programs, which increases the risk of bias across study outcomes. More research is needed to reach conclusions regarding the effectiveness of DBT in improving alexithymia. Future studies should conduct randomized controlled trial designs (primarily with active treatment control conditions), greater standardization of DBT-based interventions, and a more in-depth examination of the level of participant involvement in long-term DBT-based interventions may help to understand whether DBT improves alexithymia difficulties.

Different studies performed in human patients, animal models, and in vitro cell cultures, show a correlation between type 2 diabetes (DBT2) and certain neurodegenerative pathologies. Also, it was proposed that increased inflammation and- or oxidative distress are a possible cause of DBT2-accelerated cognitive decline. The onset of DBT2 is characterized by an increase in blood glucose levels due to (an inability of the body's cells to use insulin properly) called impaired fasting glucose (IFG). Genetic and/or molecular causes of IFG have not yet been established, but metabolic syndrome, obesity, unbalanced diets, and sedentary lifestyle would be responsible, at least in part, for the multiplication in the number of this disease. It has been proposed that hyperglycemia itself causes an imbalance in the redox state and could compromise blood-brain barrier (BBB) causing neurodegeneration. For this reason, we propose, in this review, to evaluate the available data about redox state and neurocognitive studies during the IFG period.

Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is an intoxication-type inherited metabolic disorder in which hyperleucinemia leads to brain swelling and death without treatment. MSUD is caused by branched-chain alpha-ketoacid dehydrogenase deficiency due to biallelic loss of the protein products from the genes BCKDHA, BCKDHB, or DBT, while a distinct but related condition is caused by loss of DLD. In this case series, eleven individuals with MSUD caused by two pathogenic variants in DBT are presented. All eleven individuals have a deletion of exon 2 (delEx2, NM_001918.3:c.48_171del); six individuals are homozygous and five individuals are compound heterozygous with a novel missense variant (NM_001918.5:c.916 T > C [p.Ser306Pro]) confirmed to be in trans. Western Blot indicates decreased amount of protein product in delEx2;c.916 T > C liver cells and absence of protein product in delEx2 homozygous hepatocytes. Ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry demonstrates an accumulation of branched-chain amino acids and alpha-ketoacids in explanted hepatocytes. Individuals with these variants have a neonatal-onset, non-thiamine-responsive, classical form of MSUD. Strikingly, the entire cohort is derived from families who immigrated to the Washington, DC, metro area from Honduras or El Salvador suggesting the possibility of a founder effect.

Maple urine syrup disease (MSUD) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by deficient activity of the branched-chain alpha ketoacid dehydrogenase (BCKAD) enzymatic complex due to biallelic variants in the alpha (BCKDHA) or beta (BCKDHB) subunits or the acyltransferase component (DBT). Treatment consists in leucine (LEU), isoleucine (ILE), and valine (VAL) (branched-chain amino acids) dietary restriction and strict metabolic control. to determine the characteristics of the Chilean cohort with MSUD currently in follow-up at Instituto de Nutrición y Tecnología de los Alimentos, during the 1990-2017 period Retrospective analytical study in 45 MSUD cases. Measured: biochemical parameters (LEU, ILE, and VAL), anthropometric evaluation, and neurocognitive development. In 18 cases undergoing genetic study were analyzed according to the gene and protein location, number of affected alleles, and type of posttranslational modification affected. Then, 45 patients with MSUD diagnosis were identified during the period: 37 were alive at the time of the study. Average diagnosis age was 71 ± 231 days. Average serum diagnosis LEU concentrations: 1.463 ± 854.1 µmol/L, VAL 550 ± 598 µmol/L and ILE 454 ± 458 µmol/L. BCKDHB variants explain 89% cases, while BCKDHA and DBT variants explain 5.5% of cases each. Variants p.Thr338Ile in BCKDHA, p.Pro240Thr and p.Ser342Asn in BCKDHB have not been previously reported in literature. Average serum follow-up LEU concentrations were 252.7 ± 16.9 µmol/L in the <5 years group and 299 ± 123.2 µmol/L in ≥5 years. Most cases presented some degree of developmental delay. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to improve the long-term prognosis. Frequent blood LEU measurements are required to optimize metabolic control and to establish relationships between different aspects analyzed.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) contributes to suicide-related morbidity and mortality and requires more intensive psychotherapeutic resources due to its high mental health service usage. Accessibility to an evidence-based treatment program is a cornerstone to support patients with BPD and part of broader suicide prevention efforts as well as improving their quality of life. AIMS: In this article, the authors aim to discuss and review available dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and DBT-informed services of selected countries in the Asia-Pacific Rim, namely Singapore, Malaysia, and Mexico. MATERIALS & METHODS: We contacted providers of different services and gathered information on the process of setting up the service and adapting the treatment, in addition to reviewing the available literature published in the countries. RESULTS: To date, there have been a pair of DBT-informed services in Singapore, four in Malaysia, and several in Mexico with a few of them offering standard DBT. Different efforts have been put in place to increase the accessibility to training and also the number of DBT practitioners. DISCUSSION: Important considerations during the process of setting up new services include the use of domestic examples and local language that are contextually appropriate for the local community. Selected challenges faced in common include shortage of workforce, affordability of training programs, and the need for language adaptation with or without translation. CONCLUSION: Further long-term evaluation of locally adapted DBT-informed mental health services will help to elucidate the effectiveness and efficacy of the program which will potentially serve as a guide for other resource-scarce regions.

In this work, three novel catalysts were prepared by 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 wt.% facile impregnation with an iron and molybdenum mixed oxide (Fe/Mo) on an aluminum pillared clay (Al-PILC) support. These materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programed reduction (TPR), and nitrogen (N2) physisorption at 77 K. Characterizations indicated that the metal particles were dispersed on the surface of the three catalysts, and the interlayer d001 spacing of the pillared material remained unchanged after the impregnation process. The catalytic tests showed good results for DBT oxidation using the synthesized catalysts, with high turnover frequency (TOF) values, particularly for the material with 5.0 wt.% Fe/Mo. Theoretical calculations were carried out at the density functional theory (DFT) level, to investigate how the DBT molecules were adsorbed onto the surface of the mixed oxide. The lowest energy proposal was obtained when both Fe and Mo were present at the active sites, indicating a possible synergistic effect of the metals on catalyst activity. Reuse tests indicated that the catalysts could be employed effectively for up to 3 cycles in a row, then a decrease in activity occurred and the active sites needed to be regenerated.

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) is an efficient method to diagnose changes in the breast tissues. However, it may promote some future detriment to the patient exposed in this test. The future effects can be evaluating using absorbed dose values. A mammographic phantom should be chosen to simulate approximately the properties of a compressed breast in terms of the primary and dispersed radiation spectrum that exits its lower surface. The use of PMMA has important advantages. It is cheaper than substitutes for specially manufactured fabrics and is more available. The objective of this work will be to estimate the dose profile that a real breast would receive during a DTB examination. For this purpose a breast phantom with acrylic materials (PMMA) and dimensions similar to those of a real breast will be constructed, and the dose will be measured on the surface (ESAK profile) and in the middle cut (air kerma profile) of the breast phantom using the radiochromic film.

The electronic and reactivity properties of carbon doped (C-doped) boron nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) as a function of the carbon concentration were investigated in the framework of the density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation. We found that the main routes to stabilize energetically the C-doped BNNRs involve substituting boron atoms near the edges. However, the effect of doping on the electronic properties depends of the sublattice where the C atoms are located; for instance, negative doping (partial occupations of electronic states) is found replacing B atoms, whereas positive doping (partial inoccupation of electronic states) is found when replacing N atoms with respect to the pristine BNNRs. Independently of the even or odd number of dopants of the C-doped BNNRs studied in this work, the solutions of the Kohn Sham equations suggest that the most stable solution is the magnetic one. The reactivity of the C-doped BNNRs is inferred from results of the dual descriptor, and it turns out that the main electrophilic sites are located near the dopants along the C-doped BNNRs. The reactivity of these nanostructures is tested by calculating the interaction energy between undesirable organosulfur compounds present in oil fuels on the C-doped BNNRs, finding that organosulfur compounds prefer to interact over nanosurfaces with dopants substituted on the B sublattice of the C-doped BNNRs. Most importantly, the selective C doping on the BNNRs offers the opportunity to tune the properties of the BNNRs to fit novel technological applications.

Several areas within the Bahía Blanca estuary (BBE), with different maritime traffic intensity, were studied in order to confirm the presence and assess the distribution of tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), and monobutyltin (MBT) in the water column. The organotin compounds (OTCs) were determined in the water samples-taken in summer, autumn, winter, and spring of 2014-by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry after liquid-liquid extraction with hexane. The incidence of TBT throughout the whole sampling period indicated a continuous presence of this compound to the study area. However, in accordance with the butyltin degradation index (BDI), TBT was not recently introduced in the BBE. Furthermore, the average TBT levels exceeded the international guideline established by the Oslo-Paris commission (0.62 ng Sn L-1). As a result, certain biological effects could be expected to occur in sensitive species such as mussels. While DBT were below the detection limit in the 75% of the samples analyzed, MBT was detected in all the samples and no significant differences were found among the concentrations measured in the different seasons (Kruskal-Wallis test, p > 0.05). In addition, no correlations were found among the OTCs levels and the evaluated physiochemical parameters (Spearman coefficient, p > 0.05).

Various therapeutic approaches have been used to improve depressive symptoms in substance abusers. In a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and experimental and control groups, we examined and compared the effectiveness of two group-based treatment strategies-cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)-in reducing depressive symptoms among Iranian women substance abusers. The statistical population included all female addict patients who referred to addiction treatment centers of Birjand city in 2015. A sample of 30 subjects were selected through the available sampling method and randomly assigned into experimental (CBT and DBT) and control groups (each group, 10 patients). The data collection instrument was the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) questionnaire. The patients in the experimental groups were given skills in eight sessions of 90 min. The data were analyzed by the SPSS-19 software by using mean, standard deviation, and percentages at the descriptive level and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) test at the inferential level. The comparison of the mean depression score before intervention in all the groups showed no significant difference. However, after intervention, the findings showed that both CBT and DBT interventions could reduce the mean scores of depression in women substance abusers, 17.5 ± 3.0 vs 29.3 ± 4.1 (F[1,17] = 51.91, p value < 0.01) and 14.7 ± 1.8 vs 29.3 ± 4.1 (F[1,17] = 106.62, p value < 0.01), respectively, for CBT and DBT. Post-treatment effect sizes were large and did not differ statistically for CBT (ηp2, 0.75) and DBT (ηp2, 0.86). Therefore, this study highlights the importance of CBT and DBT skills training to substance abusers and provides initial evidence of their effectiveness.

Cardiovascular risk factors (CRF) were widely described as related to dementia. There are very few studies regarding this association in FTD. The objective of the study was to compare the frequency of CRF in our population with FTD and controls. 100 consecutive subjects with FTD diagnosis according to Lund-Manchester clinical criteria and 200 controls matched by age and sex were included between January 2003 to February 2007 at the Cognitive and Behavior Unit of Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires. Clinical evaluation, laboratory tests, brain images (CT/MRI), neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric assessment were performed. Multiple regression analysis was performed to analyze the association in CRF between FTD patients vs. controls. The mean age in FTD was 69.7 ± 0.9 vs. 70.1 ± 0.8 in controls (p 0.12). No difference in gender was observed between cases and controls. No differences were identified between patients and controls regarding hypertension (HTA) (65% vs. 67,3% p 0.44); dyslipidemia (57% vs. 54.7% p 0.74); obesity (39% vs. 27.6% p 0.14) and hypothyroidism (26% vs. 17.1% p 0.1). A significant difference was observed for Diabetes Mellitus (39% vs. 22.6% p 0.001). In our population, Diabetes Mellitus was associated as an independent risk factor for FTD. To our knowledge this is the first report in which CRF were evaluated prospectively in FTD patients. More studies are needed to confirm this finding in larger populations.
