RESUMO

Expansins are proteins without catalytic activity, but able to break hydrogen bonds between cell wall polysaccharides hemicellulose and cellulose. This proteins were reported for the first time in 1992, describing cell wall extension in cucumber hypocotyls caused particularly by alpha-expansins. Although these proteins have GH45 and CBM63 domains, characteristic of enzymes related with the cleavage of cell wall polysaccharides, demonstrating in vitro that they extend plant cell wall. Its participation has been associated to molecular processes such as development and growing, fruit ripening and softening, tolerance and resistance to biotic and abiotic stress and seed germination. Structural insights, facilitated by bioinformatics approaches, are highlighted, shedding light on the intricate interactions between alpha-expansins and cell wall polysaccharides. After more than thirty years of its discovery, we want to celebrate the knowledge of alpha-expansins and emphasize their importance to understand the phenomena of disassembly and loosening of the cell wall, specifically in the fruit ripening phenomena, with this state-of-the-art dedicated to them.

RESUMO

Guadua angustifolia is a bamboo species that has been used in construction since it is an excellent sustainable material. However, it creeps under sustained loading, modifying the structural behavior of culms and joints. Thus, this study was aimed at describing the creep behavior of Guadua on the transverse plane. To this end, 60 Guadua rings were submitted to a diametric compression load by means of steel blocks, while the diametric displacement was measured over time. In tests conducted for up to 90 days, the displacements did not reach a stationary value. A high degree of deformation over time was measured, which was about 2-3 times that reported for bamboo creep under axial bending. The data were successfully fitted to a generalized Maxwell model and a Burgers model. Model parameters were not significantly different when being fitted at 30, 50, 60, and 90 days, suggesting that parameters of viscoelastic models to represent bamboo creep on the transverse plane can be captured with tests lasting 30 days. Eleven rings failed at a stress level of 3.64 MPa (Coefficient of variation CV = 0.22) and a strain level of 0.0373 (CV = 0.20) which are 39% lower and 78% higher than the failure stress and strain, respectively, obtained in static control tests. The substantial creep on the transverse plane indicates that the stiffness and capacity of some types of bamboo joints may be drastically reduced over time. Fitted parameters may be used in theoretical models to assess the performance of bamboo elements and joints under transverse loading over time.

RESUMO

Acrylic bone cement materials are widely used in prosthetic implants, orthopaedics and others trauma surgery. From the mechanical constitutive behaviour viewpoint, experimental analyses have provided ample evidence that such materials exhibit time-dependent properties. In this context, this work addresses the formulation of a nonlinear viscoelastic model for the behaviour of PMMA bone cements under compressive creep loading. Relying upon experimental data available for four PMMA bone cement types, a nonlinear Burgers-like rheological model is formulated and related parameters calibrated for the mechanical description of the time-dependent behaviour of these materials under isothermal conditions and one dimensional setting. The proposed model reveals relevant in reproducing both instantaneous and delayed properties of studied PMMA bone cements.

RESUMO

In the present systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluated the effects of providing piglets with creep feed during lactation on piglet pre- and post-weaning performance. A total of 20 articles met the inclusion criteria. Creep feeding in lactation improved pre-weaning piglet performance in 46% of the studies selected, while 58% of the included studies reported that creep feeding in lactation improved piglet performance during the nursery phase. Creep feeding increased the average piglet body weight (creep = 7.23 ± 0.30, no creep = 6.96 ± 0.31; p = 0.03) and litter weight (creep = 81.2 ± 4.18, no creep = 76.4 ± 4.22; p < 0.001) at weaning. The average piglet body weight and litter weight were positively associated (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively) with total creep feed intake. Creep feeding of piglets for more than 14 days increased (p = 0.003) the litter weight at weaning compared to litters not provided or provided for shorter periods with creep feed. The present work strengthened the notion that creep feeding during lactation presents opportunities for improving weaning weights and post-weaning piglet performance compared to litters not provided or provided for shorter periods with creep feed.

RESUMO

The influence of load on the cellulose microfibrils of single cells or thin wood foils is known. It can decrease the cellulose microfibril angles and, in turn, increase the stiffness. However, this modification of a piece of wood, which is made up of multiple cells, is unknown. The aim of this research was to study the effect of tensile creep on the longitudinal stiffness of radiata pine wood. The modulus of elasticity of each specimen was determined before and after being subjected to tensile creep. The samples were loaded at 1170 N and 1530 N for 20 min at 70 °C. The load was determined as a function of a percentage of the force at the proportional limit. The moduli of elasticity before and post-tensile creep showed no effect on the stiffness of wood at the macroscopic level, but neither were there damage to the cell structure. It can be assumed that there are changes at the microscopic level, but they are not enough to be reflected at the macro scale. It is also challenging to achieve the modifications that occur at the level of a single cell or in thin wood foils; however, the implications of this would be favorable for the development of stronger wood-based products.

RESUMO

Reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP) provide economic and environmental benefits. In recent decades, their use has increased, but rheological properties are affected by RAP aging, increasing stiffness, cracking, and susceptibility to water. To counteract these effects, rejuvenating agents are used, but they must be properly dosed to design quality mixtures. Therefore, different binders were analyzed, including virgin binder (VBB), binder modified by SBS polymer (MB), AC-RAP, binder softened using a rejuvenating agent, and binders softened with doses (15%, 30%, and 45%) of AC-RAP. The rheological properties were evaluated by dynamic shear rheometry (DSR) and beam-bending rheometry (BBR) tests, while the linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test was used to measure fatigue cracking and the multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) test was used to measure rutting. A mixing chart was constructed based on a high temperature AC-RAP to satisfy the performance grade (PG 76-22). The results showed that softened binders become flexible, but when AC-RAP is added, they turn stiff and behave better than MB. Moreover, combining a rejuvenating agent and AC-RAP reduces the aging stiffness of RAP, improving its rheological properties without compromising the rutting or cracking resistance.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of weaning and concentrate supplementation on the characteristics of carcass cuts and longissimus muscle of Suffolk lambs finished on a Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.) pasture. Weaning and concentrate supplementation strategies were evaluated in four finishing systems: i) non-weaned and non-supplemented lambs; ii) non-weaned lambs supplemented with concentrate in creep feeding; iii) weaned and non-supplemented lambs; and iv) weaned lambs supplemented with concentrate. In the systems with weaning, lambs were weaned at 46 ± 6 days of age. In the systems with supplementation, the concentrate was offered daily at 2% of lambs' body weight. Weaning led to a decrease, whereas supplementation led to an increase in carcass cut weights. Supplemented lambs had lower yields of neck and uncovered ribs, and higher yields of breast + flank and loin. The characteristics of loin eye and fat thickness over the longissimus muscle presented lower values in weaned lambs and higher values in supplemented lambs. Keeping lambs with their dams and offering concentrate supplementation until slaughter are strategies recommended to obtain heavier cuts with increased muscularity and fat content.(AU)

RESUMO

This study evaluated the growth, physiology, and coccidiosis infestation of suckling beef calves provided monensin and grazing limpograss (Exp. 1) or bahiagrass (Exp. 2) pastures. Treatments were randomly assigned to pastures (4 pastures/treatment; 3 cow-calf pairs/pasture in Exp. 1; 4 pastures/treatment; 10 cow-calf pairs/pair of pastures in Exp. 2) and comprised of supplementation of 0.40 kg/d of soybean meal added or not with monensin (20 mg/kg of total DM intake) for 112 and 78 days before weaning in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively. In Exp. 1, supplement DM disappearance tended (P = 0.10) to be less for calves supplemented with vs. without monensin, but treatment × day and treatment effects were not observed (P ≥ 0.18) for herbage mass (HM), herbage allowance (HA), cow body condition score (BCS), calf average daily gain (ADG), calf plasma data, and fecal coccidia egg count. In Exp. 2, forage nutritive value, HM and HA, and cow BCS did not differ (P ≥ 0.43) between treatments. Supplemental monensin did not impact (P ≥ 0.78) plasma concentrations of insulin-like growth factor 1 but increased (P ≤ 0.05) calf overall ADG and plasma concentrations on day 78 and reduced plasma concentrations of urea nitrogen (PUN) on day 78 and fecal coccidia egg count on day 78 compared to calves provided no monensin supplementation. Hence, monensin supplementation successfully improved growth performance of creep-fed suckling beef calves, when herbage mass was not a limiting factor and coccidiosis infestation occurred.

RESUMO

Effects of substituting of wheat flour with coffee cherry pulp powder (CCPP) (coffee by-product as fiber source) at 0, 1.2, 2.3, and 4.7% dry basis (0, 1.25, 2.5, and 5% wet basis) on dough and gluten rheological properties and baking quality were investigated. Rheological properties were analyzed during mixing, compression recovery, and creep-recovery. A rheological approach was adopted to study the viscoelasticity of dough enriched with fiber. The data obtained were analyzed with the Kelvin-Voigt model and the parameters were correlated to bread volume and crumb firmness to assess the effect of incorporating CCPP. A decrease in gluten's elastic properties was attributed to the water-binding and gelling properties of CCPP. Stiffness of dough and crumb firmness increased as the level of CCPP increased and bread volume decreased. Stiffer dough corresponded with lower compliance values and higher steady state viscosity compared to the control. A follow-up study with 5% CCPP and additives is recommended to overcome the reduction in elastic recovery and bread volume.

RESUMO

At the beginning of this century, due to well-established Brazilian recycling processes, geosynthetics' manufacturers started to use recycled poly(ethylene) terephthalate (PET) yarns/filaments (from PET bottles) in geotextile production. Despite the fact that recycled products cannot act as reinforcement functions, geosynthetics are constantly under sustained tensile load and experiences evolutions of the axial strain (creep behaviour). Thus, this study aims to assess the influence of the structure of (needle-punched) non-woven geotextiles manufactured using recycled PET yarns on their creep behaviour. Two geotextiles with different fibre/filament production processes were investigated (short-staple fibres-GTXnwS-and continuous filaments-GTXnwC). Unconfined in-isolated conventional and accelerated (using the stepped isothermal method) creep tests were performed at 5%, 10%, 20%, 40% and 60% of geotextiles' ultimate tensile strength. The geotextiles investigated provided similar creep behaviour to geotextiles manufactured with virgin PET material. The standard deviation of the axial strain tends to increase as the load level applied increase. The structure of the GTXnwS harms its tensile -strain behaviour, promoting axial deformation under sustained loads, at least 50% higher than GTXnwC for the same load level applied. The influence of the load level and geotextile structure in the initial axial strain is pointed out. Long-term predictions based on creep tests performed using the stepped isothermal method have proven to be conservative and they must be restricted for quality control of the investigated geotextiles.

RESUMO

Normal and high amylose corn starches were modified using HMDSO plasma at different time treatments. Changes in functional properties of starch granule, film-forming solutions (FFS) and films were investigated. SEM analysis revealed HMDSO coating deposition on the granule surface, which limited the amylopectin leach out from the granules to the continuous matrix, affecting the rheological properties of the FFS. The amylopectin restriction resulted in a low reinforcement of the network decreasing the viscosity as indicated by n and k values. Also, a gel-like behavior (G' > G″) was observed when the amylose and time treatment increased, suggesting that the matrix becomes less elastic with softer entanglement. This behavior was confirmed by creep test and Burger model parameters. The plasma treatments allowed obtaining FFS with low viscosity, suitable for developing soft and hydrophobic films with low flexibility, as indicated by the decrease of the maximum stress, Hencky strain and permeance values.

RESUMO

This work focuses on the viscoelastic response of carbon/epoxy filament-wound composite rings under radial compressive loading in harsh environments. The composites are exposed to three hygro-thermo-mechanical conditions: (i) pure mechanical loading, (ii) mechanical loading in a wet environment and (iii) mechanical loading under hygrothermal conditioning at 40 ∘C. Dedicated equipment was built to carry out the creep experiments. Quasi-static mechanical tests are performed before and after creep tests to evaluate the residual properties of the rings. The samples are tested in (i) radial compression, (ii) axial compression, and (iii) hoop tensile strength. Different laminates wound at off-axis orientations are manufactured via filament winding and analyzed. Key results show that creep displacement is affected by both hygrothermal and mechanical conditionings, especially at a higher temperature. Moreover, residual properties are quantified showing that creep generates permanent damage in the cylinders.

RESUMO

Abstract Background: Creep feed is offered to suckling piglets to introduce solid feed and provide extra nutrients in late lactation. However, the effect of creep feed is inconsistent; there is little information about the effect of creep diet complexity on piglet performance. Objective: Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of creep feed and its complexity on growth performance of suckling and weaned pigs. Methods: In Exp. 1, eight litters (average 19.9 ± 1.1 d of age; initial piglet weight: 6.74 ± 1.2 kg) were allotted to two dietary treatments considering breed, litter size and weight, as follows: no creep feed (n=3) and creep feed (n=5; offered for 8 days before weaning). At weaning (d 28 of age), the pigs were divided into three treatments (6 pigs/pen, 3 replicates; initial body weight: 9.66 ± 0.34 kg) balanced by gender, body weight, and breed, as follows: creep feed eaters, creep feed non-eaters, and no creep feed. In Exp. 2, two different types of creep feed were offered to suckling piglets (initial piglet weight: 3.79 ± 0.55 kg) in seven litters from d 12 of age (average 12.0 ± 1.3 d of age) to weaning (d 25 of age). Treatments were: HCF (n=4): highly-complex creep diet containing 3% fish meal, 2.4% blood meal, and 15% whey; and 2) LCF (n=3): lowly-complex creep diet without the mentioned ingredients. At weaning, only eater pigs were divided into 2 treatments (6 pigs/pen, 3 replicates; initial body weight: 7.53 ± 0.97 kg) balanced by gender, breed and body weight as follows: HCF eaters and LCF eaters. In both experiments, creep feed was mixed with 1% Cr2O3 to measure fecal color for eater/non-eater categorization and the pigs were fed a common nursery diet for 21 days. Results: In both experiments, there were no differences on piglet weaning weight and overall nursery growth performance among the treatments. In Exp. 2, the creep feed intake and percentage of eaters per litter were not different between the HCF and LCF treatments, whereas the HCF eaters tended to have a greater average daily gain (p=0.08) and gain to feed ratio (p=0.09) than the LCF eaters during d 7-14 postweaning. Conclusion: Creep feed did not affect overall piglet growth in suckling and nursery phases, but its complexity might affect pig growth in the early nursery phase.

Piglets can prefer flavors that are presented to pregnant sows, hence this study intended to estimate the effect of prenatal exposure of piglets to flavors on the intake of flavored creep feed and performance. Gestational sows were fed either a flavored (garlic or aniseed; n24) or an unflavored diet (n24) from days 90 to 114 of gestation. Their litters were offered either garlic, aniseed, or unflavored creep feed during the suckling period, and its intake was measured as well as animal's final body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG). Data was analyzed taking into account the diet offered to both sows and piglets, as well as the interaction between these variables. As previous experiments have shown, flavor learning did not affect a piglet's performance during the suckling period, finding no differences for creep feed intake, ADG, or BW according to diets (p > 0.05). Repeated exposure of piglets to previously learned flavors without clear post-ingestive benefits could nullify the strategies proposed. Moreover, milk and creep feed diets show a great reward contrast that may accelerate learning extinction. Results of the present and previous experiments suggest that current flavor continuity strategies that are proposed for pig production systems need to be reconsidered.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of creep feeding and drylots or semi confined raised lambs on weight gain, gastrointestinal nematodes infection and economic viability. Lambs from six lots of 30 ewes were weighed at birth and at weaning and the offspring of three lots were supplemented in private troughs and their food intake was measured. In the second phase, after weaning, lambs were divided into two finishing groups, feedlot or semi confinement considering gender, weaning weight and creep feeding. All animals were dewormed at early termination, weighed every 14 days and supplemented with 2% of body weight. Feedlot animals received sorghum silage while semi confined animals were kept at pasture on Brachiaria brizantha cv Piata. Creep feeding had effect on weight and weight gain at weaning and finishing, but favorable economic returns were only observed at termination. Pasture deferred in the semi-confinement system controlled verminosis, preventing deaths with no differences in weight and weight gain among feedlots or semi-confined lambs. Both systems were economically viable, but profit in semi confinement was 2.3 times higher than the feedlots.(AU)

Both systems were economically viable, but profit in semi confinement was 2.3 times higher than the feedlots.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplementation strategy on performance, nutritional and metabolic characteristics of Nellore suckling female calves, on grazing Urochloa decumbens during the rainy-dry transition period. Forty-four Nellore female calves, averaging 147.6 ± 1.34 kg (4 months), were used. A single supplement 20% of crude protein of dry matter was provided, consisting of daily supplement at 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, or 0.6% of body weight. A positive linear effect (P < 0.05) on final body weight and average weight gain of female calves was observed with increased supplementation. Supplementation increased consumption, in kilograms per day, of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), digested dry matter, and total digestible nutrients (TDN), all calculated as % of dry matter. There was no effect of supplementation on the consumption in kilograms per day of neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (apNDF) (P > 0.05). Supplementation increased, in a quadratic way, the total apparent digestibility coefficient of DM, OM, CP, apNDF, and TDN (P < 0.05). There was no effect of supplementation (P > 0.05) on non-esterified fatty acid concentrations. There was a positive linear effect (P < 0.05) of supplementation on insulin concentrations. In this study, it is concluded that linearly increasing the feeding level of a supplement with 20% crude protein (% of DM) in the range of 0.2-0.6% of body weight improves the performance, nutritional and metabolic characteristics of the animals, considering these pasture characteristics.
