Infectious disease (ID) cohorts are key to advancing public health surveillance, public policies, and pandemic responses. Unfortunately, ID cohorts often lack funding to store and share clinical-epidemiological (CE) data and high-dimensional laboratory (HDL) data long term, which is evident when the link between these data elements is not kept up to date. This becomes particularly apparent when smaller cohorts fail to successfully address the initial scientific objectives due to limited case numbers, which also limits the potential to pool these studies to monitor long-term cross-disease interactions within and across populations. CE data from 9 arbovirus (arthropod-borne viruses) cohorts in Latin America were retrospectively harmonized using the Maelstrom Research methodology and standardized to Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC). We created a harmonized and standardized meta-cohort that contains CE and HDL data from 9 arbovirus studies from Latin America. To facilitate advancements in cross-population inference and reuse of cohort data, the Reconciliation of Cohort Data for Infectious Diseases (ReCoDID) Consortium harmonized and standardized CE and HDL from 9 arbovirus cohorts into 1 meta-cohort. Interested parties will be able to access data dictionaries that include information on variables across the data sets via Bio Studies. After consultation with each cohort, linked harmonized and curated human cohort data (CE and HDL) will be made accessible through the European Genome-phenome Archive platform to data users after their requests are evaluated by the ReCoDID Data Access Committee. This meta-cohort can facilitate various joint research projects (eg, on immunological interactions between sequential flavivirus infections and for the evaluation of potential biomarkers for severe arboviral disease).

The need for new drugs to treat human infections is a global health concern. Diseases like tuberculosis, trypanosomiasis, amoebiasis, and AIDS remain significant problems, especially in developing countries like Mexico. Despite existing treatments, issues such as resistance and adverse effects drive the search for new alternatives. Herein, we introduce the NUATEI research consortium, made up of experts from the Institute of Biomedical Research at UNAM, who identify and obtain natural and synthetic compounds and test their effects against human pathogens using in vitro and in vivo models. The consortium has evaluated hundreds of natural extracts and compounds against the pathogens causing tuberculosis, trypanosomiasis, amoebiasis, and AIDS, rendering promising results, including a patent with potential for preclinical studies. This paper presents the rationale behind the formation of this consortium, as well as its objectives and strategies, emphasizing the importance of natural and synthetic products as sources of antimicrobial compounds and the relevance of the diseases studied. Finally, we briefly describe the methods of the evaluation of the compounds in each biological model and the main achievements. The potential of the consortium to screen numerous compounds and identify new therapeutic agents is highlighted, demonstrating its significant contribution to addressing these infectious diseases.

Soybean cultivation in tropical regions relies on symbioses with nitrogen-fixing Bradyrhizobium and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPBs), reducing environmental impacts of N fertilizers and pesticides. We evaluate the effects of soybean inoculation with different bacterial consortia combined with PGPBs or microbial secondary metabolites (MSMs) on rhizosoil chemistry, plant physiology, plant nutrition, grain yield, and rhizosphere microbial functions under field conditions over three growing seasons with four treatments: standard inoculation of Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens consortium (SI); SI plus foliar spraying with Bacillus subtilis (SI + Bs); SI plus foliar spraying with Azospirillum brasilense (SI + Az); and SI plus seed application of MSMs enriched in lipo-chitooligosaccharides extracted from B. diazoefficiens and Rhizobium tropici (SI + MSM). Rhizosphere microbial composition, diversity, and function was assessed by metagenomics. The relationships between rhizosoil chemistry, plant nutrition, grain yield, and the abundance of microbial taxa and functions were determined by generalized joint attribute modeling. The bacterial consortia had the most significant impact on rhizosphere soil fertility, which in turn affected the bacterial community, plant physiology, nutrient availability, and production. Cluster analysis identified microbial groups and functions correlated with shifts in rhizosoil chemistry and plant nutrition. Bacterial consortia positively modulated specific genera and functional pathways involved in biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites, amino acids, lipopolysaccharides, photosynthesis, bacterial secretion systems, and sulfur metabolism. The effects of the bacterial consortia on the soybean holobiont, particularly the rhizomicrobiome and rhizosoil fertility, highlight the importance of selecting appropriate consortia for desired outcomes. These findings have implications for microbial-based agricultural practices that enhance crop productivity, quality, and sustainability.

BACKGROUND: Congenital hypopituitarism (CH) and its associated syndromes, septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) and holoprosencephaly (HPE), are midline defects that cause significant morbidity for affected people. Variants in 67 genes are associated with CH, but a vast majority of CH cases lack a genetic diagnosis. Whole exome and whole genome sequencing of CH patients identifies sequence variants in genes known to cause CH, and in new candidate genes, but many of these are variants of uncertain significance (VUS). METHODS: The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) is an effort to establish gene function by knocking-out all genes in the mouse genome and generating corresponding phenotype data. We used mouse embryonic imaging data generated by the Deciphering Mechanisms of Developmental Disorders (DMDD) project to screen 209 embryonic lethal and sub-viable knockout mouse lines for pituitary malformations. RESULTS: Of the 209 knockout mouse lines, we identified 51 that have embryonic pituitary malformations. These genes not only represent new candidates for CH, but also reveal new molecular pathways not previously associated with pituitary organogenesis. We used this list of candidate genes to mine whole exome sequencing data of a cohort of patients with CH, and we identified variants in two unrelated cases for two genes, MORC2 and SETD5, with CH and other syndromic features. CONCLUSIONS: The screening and analysis of IMPC phenotyping data provide proof-of-principle that recessive lethal mouse mutants generated by the knockout mouse project are an excellent source of candidate genes for congenital hypopituitarism in children.

Resumo Os consórcios públicos de saúde (CPS) representam uma estratégia para potencializar a regionalização no SUS e a cooperação interfederativa. A implantação de policlínicas regionais visa melhorar o acesso a serviços de maior densidade tecnológica, mais próximos ao município de origem dos usuários. Este estudo objetiva analisar o processo de implantação dos consórcios públicos de saúde e das policlínicas regionais na Bahia, com base em análise documental, identificando aspectos facilitadores e dificultadores relativos à entrada na agenda política, ao papel da gestão estadual e às especificidades da composição dos CPS e das policlínicas regionais no estado da Bahia. Realizou-se análise documental das atas da Comissão Intergestores Bipartite dos anos de 2015 a 2018 e de documentos constitutivos dos consórcios implantados na Bahia. A experiência do Ceará inspirou a criação dos consórcios na Bahia, sobretudo na estruturação das policlínicas. Verificou-se posicionamento favorável dos gestores municipais acerca da potencialidade do consórcio na cooperação entre municípios. A atuação do governo do estado revelou-se condição facilitadora, e a manutenção da contrapartida municipal no financiamento, como elemento dificultador. Os consórcios contribuíram para a regionalização da saúde no estado e a ampliação do acesso à atenção especializada.


Abstract Public Health Consortiums (PHC) in Brazil represent a strategy to enhance regionalization in the Public Health Care System (SUS in Portuguese) and State/interstate/intermunicipal cooperation. The establishment of regional polyclinics aims to improve access to services with greater technological concentration and closer to users' homes. This study specifically aims to analyze the process of creating PHC and regional polyclinics in Bahia State, based on documental analysis, identifying aspects related to entering the political agenda that facilitate and hinder, the role of state administration, specificities of the composition of these PHC and regional polyclinics. A documental analysis was carried out of the minutes of the Comissão Intergestores Bipartite (CIB-BA) [Bipartite Administrative Commission] from 2015 to 2018 and of constitutive documents of the consortiums established in this state. The Ceará State experience inspired the creation of consortiums in Bahia, especially the structuring of polyclinics. Municipal administrators demonstrated a favorable position regarding the potential of consortiums with cooperation among municipalities. The role of the state government proved to be a facilitating condition, whereas the maintenance of the municipal counterpart in finance constituted a hindering element. The consortiums contributed to the regionalization of health in the state as well as expansion of access to specialized care.

Microorganisms can play a significant role in material corrosion, with bacterial biofilms as major participants in microbially influenced corrosion (MIC). The exact mechanisms by which this takes place are poorly understood, resulting in a scarcity of information regarding MIC detection and prevention. In this work, a consortium of moderately thermophilic bacteria isolated from a biofilm growing over aluminum alloy 7075 was characterized. Its effect over the alloy was evaluated on a 40-day period using Electron Microscopy, demonstrating acceleration of corrosion in comparison to the abiotic control. The bacterial consortium was biochemically and microbiologically characterized as an attempt to elucidate factors contributing to corrosion. Molecular analysis revealed that the consortium consisted mainly of members of the Bacillus genus, with lower abundance of other genera such as Thermoanaerobacterium, Anoxybacillus and Paenibacillus. The EPS polysaccharide presented mainly mannose, galactose, rhamnose and ribose. Our observations suggest that the acidification of the culture media resulting from bacterial metabolism acted as the main contributor to corrosion, hinting at an unspecific mechanism. The consortium was not sulfate-reducing, but it was found to produce hydrogen, which could also be a compounding factor for corrosion.

In this work, it is presented a first approach of a mathematical and kinetic analysis for improving the decoloration and further degradation process of an azo dye named acid red 27 (AR27), by means of a novel microbial consortium formed by the fungus Trametes versicolor and the bacterium Pseudomonas putida. A multivariate analysis was carried out by simulating scenarios with different operating conditions and developing a specific mathematical model based on kinetic equations describing all stages of the biological process, from microbial growth and substrate consuming to decoloration and degradation of intermediate compounds. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was performed by using a factorial design and the Response Surface Method (RSM), for determining individual and interactive effects of variables like, initial glucose concentration, initial dye concentration and the moment in time for bacterial inoculation, on response variables assessed in terms of the minimum time for: full decoloration of AR27 (R1 = 2.375 days); maximum production of aromatic metabolites (R2 = 1.575 days); and full depletion of aromatic metabolites (R3 = 12.9 days). Using RSM the following conditions improved the biological process, being: an initial glucose concentration of 20 g l-1, an initial AR27 concentration of 0.2 g l-1 and an inoculation moment in time of P. putida at day 1. The mathematical model is a feasible tool for describing AR27 decoloration and its further degradation by the microbial consortium of T. versicolor and P. putida, this model will also work as a mathematical basis for designing novel bio-reaction systems than can operate with the same principle of the described consortium.

Asphaltenes are the most polar and heavy fraction of petroleum, and their complex structure and toxicity make them resistant to biodegradation. The ability to tolerate high asphaltene concentrations is crucial to reducing the toxicity-related inhibition of microbial growth and improving their capacity for adaptation, survival, and biodegradation in soils highly contaminated with asphaltenes. This study developed a highly tolerant consortium for efficient asphaltene biodegradation in soils from 22 bacterial isolates obtained from heavy-crude oil-contaminated soils. Isolates corresponded to the Rhodococcus, Bacillus, Stutzerimonas, Cellulosimicrobium, Pseudomonas, and Paenibacillus genera, among others, and used pure asphaltenes and heavy crude oil as the only carbon sources. Surface plate assays were used to evaluate the tolerance of individual isolates to asphaltenes, and the results showed variations in the extension and inhibition rates with maximum tolerance levels at 60,000 mg asphaltenes l-1. Inhibition assays were used to select non-antagonistic bacterial isolates among those showing the highest tolerance levels to asphaltenes. A consortium made up of the five most tolerant and non-antagonistic bacterial isolates was able to degrade up to 83 wt.% out of 10,000 mg asphaltenes kg-1 in the soil after 52 days. Due to its biological compatibility, high asphaltene tolerance, and ability to utilise it as a source of energy, the degrading consortium developed in this work has shown a high potential for soil bioremediation and is a promising candidate for the treatment of aged soil areas contaminated with heavy and extra-heavy crude oil. This would be the first research to assess and consider extreme bacterial tolerance and microbial antagonism between individual degrading microbes, leading to the development of an improved consortium capable of efficiently degrading high amounts of asphaltenes in soil.

The biomass of microalgae and the compounds that can be obtained from their processing are of great interest for various economic sectors. Chlorophyll from green microalgae has biotechnological applications of great potential in different industrial areas such as food, animal feed, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and agriculture. In this paper, the experimental, technical and economic performance of biomass production from a microalgal consortium (Scenedesmus sp., Chlorella sp., Schroderia sp., Spirulina sp., Pediastrum sp., and Chlamydomonas sp.) was investigated in three cultivation systems (phototrophic, heterotrophic and mixotrophic) in combination with the extraction of chlorophyll (a and b) on a large scale using simulation; 1 ha was established as the area for cultivation. In the laboratory-scale experimental stage, biomass and chlorophyll concentrations were determined for 12 days. In the simulation stage, two retention times in the photobioreactor were considered, which generated six case studies for the culture stage. Subsequently, a simulation proposal for the chlorophyll extraction process was evaluated. The highest microalgae biomass concentration was 2.06 g/L in heterotrophic culture, followed by mixotrophic (1.98 g/L). Phototrophic and mixotrophic cultures showed the highest chlorophyll concentrations of 20.5 µg/mL and 13.5 µg/mL, respectively. The simulation shows that higher biomass and chlorophyll production is attained when using the mixotrophic culture with 72 h of retention that we considered to evaluate chlorophyll production (a and b). The operating cost of the entire process is very high; the cultivation stage has the highest operating cost (78%), mainly due to the high energy consumption of the photobioreactors.

Se evaluó la biodegradación de polietilenglicol de peso molecular 400 - PEG 400 con el consorcio Pseudomonas sp. y Rhizobium trifolii en reactores en Batch; para determinar las condiciones óptimas de operación del reactor se preparó medio con sales mínimas esenciales suplementado con peptonaCSMEP; en estos medios se estimó el comportamiento del consorcio con condiciones de temperatura entre 15-37°C, pH en un rango de 5-9 y concentración de PEG 400 del .1-2%. Con los resultados obtenidos en estos ensayos previos se ensamblaron tres reactores en Batch - BK. Se analizaron 14 muestras del contenido de cada uno de los reactores durante 20 días para medir la biodegradación del PEG 400 usando demanda química de oxígeno - DQO en sistema de digestión cerrado. Se obtuvo una disminución de hasta el 98.5% del poliéter, lo que mostró que la simbiosis fue efectiva para alcanzar una remoción importante del contaminante.


The biodegradation of polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 400 - PEG 400 was evaluated with the consortium Pseudomonas sp. and Rhizobium trifolii in Batch reactors. To determine the optimal operating conditions of the reactor, a medium with minimum essential salts supplemented with CSMEP peptone was prepared; In these media, the behavior of the consortium was estimated with temperature conditions between 15-37°C, pH in a range of 5-9 and PEG 400 concentration of .1-2%. With the results obtained in these previous tests, three Batch - BK reactors were assembled. 14 samples of the contents of each one of the reactors were analyzed during 20 days to measure the biodegradation of PEG 400 using chemical oxygen demand - COD in a closed digestion system. A decrease of up to 98.5% of the polyether was obtained, which showed that the symbiosis was effective to achieve an important removal of the contaminant.

Microbial degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons is an emerging technology, and it is well recognized for its economic methods, efficiency, and safety; however, its exploration is still scarce and greater emphasis on cyanobacteria-bacterial mutualistic interactions is needed. We evaluated and characterized the phenanthrene biodegradation capacity of consortium dominated by Fischerella sp. under holoxenic conditions with aerobic heterotrophic bacteria and their molecular identification through 16S rRNA Illumina sequencing. Results indicated that our microbial consortium can degrade up to 92% of phenanthrene in five days. Bioinformatic analyses revealed that consortium was dominated by Fischerella sp., however different members of Nostocaceae and Weeksellaceae, as well as several other bacteria, such as Chryseobacterium, and Porphyrobacter, were found to be putatively involved in the biological degradation of phenanthrene. This work contributes to a better understanding of biodegradation of phenanthrene by cyanobacteria and identify the microbial diversity related.

A novel interdomain consortium composed of a methanogenic Archaeon and a sulfate-reducing bacterium was isolated from a microbial biofilm in an oil well in Cahuita National Park, Costa Rica. Both organisms can be grown in pure culture or as stable co-culture. The methanogenic cells were non-motile rods producing CH4 exclusively from H2/CO2. Cells of the sulfate-reducing partner were motile rods forming cell aggregates. They utilized hydrogen, lactate, formate, and pyruvate as electron donors. Electron acceptors were sulfate, thiosulfate, and sulfite. 16S rRNA sequencing revealed 99% gene sequence similarity of strain CaP3V-M-L2AT to Methanobacterium subterraneum and 98.5% of strain CaP3V-S-L1AT to Desulfomicrobium baculatum. Both strains grew from 20 to 42 °C, pH 5.0-7.5, and 0-4% NaCl. Based on our data, type strains CaP3V-M-L2AT (= DSM 113354 T = JCM 39174 T) and CaP3V-S-L1AT (= DSM 113299 T = JCM 39179 T) represent novel species which we name Methanobacterium cahuitense sp. nov. and Desulfomicrobium aggregans sp. nov.

In 2013, recognizing that Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of death by cancer worldwide and that it was a neglected disease increasing rapidly in Mexico, the community of researchers at the Biomedicine Research Unit of the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Iztacala from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) established an intramural consortium that involves a multidisciplinary group of researchers, technicians, and postgraduate students to contribute to the understanding of this pathology in Mexico. This article is about the work developed by the Mexican Colorectal Cancer Research Consortium (MEX-CCRC): how the Consortium was created, its members, and its short- and long-term goals. Moreover, it is a narrative of the accomplishments of this project. Finally, we reflect on possible strategies against CRC in Mexico and contrast all the data presented with another international strategy to prevent and treat CRC. We believe that the Consortium's characteristics must be maintained to initiate a national strategy, and the reported data could be useful to establish future collaborations with other countries in Latin America and the world.

The benefits of mycorrhizal interactions are only known in 8 of 210 recognized Agave taxa. We evaluated the effects of autochthonous and allochthonous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on growth and nutrient assimilation in Agave maximiliana. The autochthonous consortium (Cn) of eight species was propagated from the rhizospheric soil of A. maximiliana, while Claroideoglomus claroideum (Cc) and Claroideoglomus etunicatum (Ce) were employed as allochthonous AMF. Six treatments were included in the study: Cn, Ce, Cc, Ce + Cc, Tf (fertilized control), and Tn (non-fertilized control, not inoculated). Mycorrhizal colonization increased over time, and the colonization percentages produced by Cn and the allochthonous AMF, both alone and mixed together, were equal at 6, 12, and 18 months. Height increased steadily and was higher in AMF-treated plants from seven months onward. Growth indicators of AMF-treated and AMF-free plants were equal at 6 months, but the beneficial effects of allochthonous and autochthonous AMF were evident in all growth indicators at 18 months and in sugar and mineral (P, K, Ca, Mg, and Fe) content. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi significantly improved all growth parameters of A. maximiliana regardless of the origin of the inoculums. This is the first study to report the positive effects of AMF colonization in A. maximiliana.

This work provides the basis for implementing a continuous treatment system using a bacterial consortium for wastewater containing a pesticide mixture of iprodione (IPR) and chlorpyrifos (CHL). Two bacterial strains (Achromobacter spanius C1 and Pseudomonas rhodesiae C4) isolated from the biomixture of a biopurification system were able to efficiently remove pesticides IPR and CHL at different concentrations (10 to 100 mg L-1) from the liquid medium as individual strains and free consortium. The half-life time (T1/2) for IPR and CHL was determined for individual strains and a free bacterial consortium. However, when the free bacterial consortium was used, a lower T1/2 was obtained, especially for CHL. Based on these results, an immobilized bacterial consortium was formulated with each bacterial strain encapsulated individually in alginate beads. Then, different inoculum concentrations (5, 10, and 15% w/v) of the immobilized consortium were evaluated in batch experiments for IPR and CHL removal. The inoculum concentration of 15% w/v demonstrated the highest pesticide removal. Using this inoculum concentration, the packed-bed bioreactor with an immobilized bacterial consortium was operated in continuous mode at different flow rates (30, 60, and 90 mL h-1) at a pesticide concentration of 50 mg L-1 each. The performance in the bioreactor demonstrated that it is possible to efficiently remove a pesticide mixture of IPR and CHL in a continuous system. The metabolites 3,5-dichloroaniline (3,5-DCA) and 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) were produced, and a slight accumulation of TCP was observed. The bioreactor was influenced by TCP accumulation but was able to recover performance quickly. Finally, after 60 days of operation, the removal efficiency was 96% for IPR and 82% for CHL. The findings of this study demonstrate that it is possible to remove IPR and CHL from pesticide-containing wastewater in a continuous system.

Global industrialization and natural resources extraction have left cocktails of environmental pollutants. Thus, this work focuses on developing a defined actinobacteria consortium able to restore systems co-contaminated with pollutants occurring in Argentinian environments. In this context, five actinobacteria were tested in solid medium to evaluate antagonistic interactions and tolerance against lindane (LIN), Reactive Black B-V (RBV), phenanthrene (Ph) and Cr(VI). The strains showed absence of antagonism, and most of them tolerated the presence of individual pollutants and their mixtures, except Micromonospora sp. A10. Thus, a quadruple consortium constituted by Streptomyces sp. A5, M7, MC1, and Amycolatopsis tucumanensis DSM 45259T, was tested in liquid systems with individual contaminants. The best microbial growth was observed in the presence of RBV and the lowest on Cr(VI). Removals detected were 83.3%, 65.0% and 52.4% for Ph, RBV and LIN, respectively, with absence of Cr(VI) dissipation. Consequently, the consortium performance was tested against the organic mixture, and a microbial growth similar to the biotic control and a LIN removal increase (61.2%) were observed. Moreover, the four actinobacteria of the consortium survived the mixture bioremediation process. These results demonstrate the potential of the defined actinobacteria consortium as a tool to restore environments co-contaminated with organic pollutants.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) impose adverse effects on the environment and human life. The use of synthetic microbial consortia is promising in bioremediation of contaminated sites with these pollutants. However, the design of consortia taking advantage of natural interactions has been poorly explored. In this study, a dual synthetic bacterial consortium (DSC_AB) was constructed with two key members (Sphingobium sp. AM and Burkholderia sp. Bk), of a natural PAH degrading consortium. DSC_AB showed significantly enhanced degradation of PAHs and toxic intermediary metabolites relative to the axenic cultures, indicating the existence of synergistic relationships. Metaproteomic and gene-expression analyses were applied to obtain a view of bacterial performance during phenanthrene removal. Overexpression of the Bk genes, naph, biph, tol and sal and the AM gene, ahdB, in DSC_AB relative to axenic cultures, demonstrated that both strains are actively participating in degradation, which gave evidence of cross-feeding. Several proteins related to stress response were under-expressed in DSC_AB relative to axenic cultures, indicating that the division of labour reduces cellular stress, increasing the efficiency of degradation. This is the one of the first works revealing bacterial relationships during PAH removal in a synthetic consortium applying an omics approach. Our findings could be used to develop criteria for evaluating the potential effectiveness of synthetic bacterial consortia in bioremediation.

Introdução: um dos princípios do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) é a descentralização de serviços de saúde, com uma única direção em cada esfera de governo e tendo os estados e municípios responsabilidade compartilhada pela gestão de políticas públicas. A autonomia municipal tornou-se mais factível por meio de acordos de cooperação, entre os entes interessados na realização de um mesmo objetivo. Dessa cooperação, resultam os consórcios interfederativos, que são associações voluntárias seja por meio de municípios, estados e/ou união. Assim como ocorrem em outras regiões do país, os consórcios de saúde em Minas Gerais existem devido a uma necessidade dos municípios de se unirem, já que sozinhos, não conseguiriam prestar determinado tipo de serviço para a sociedade. A avaliação precisa ser pensada não só como um julgamento do serviço que está sendo prestado, mas também como uma oportunidade de mudanças. Objetivo: avaliar os serviços prestados pelos Consórcios Intermunicipais de Saúde em Minas Gerais na perspectiva de gestores municipais. Metodologia: do ponto de vista metodológico trata-se de uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa, que foi realizada com os gestores municipais de saúde do estado de Minas Gerais nas 14 Macrorregiões de Saúde. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevista com roteiro semiestruturado, de fevereiro a setembro de 2023. O projeto foi submetido ao Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais e a coleta de dados só foi iniciada após aprovação. A realização das entrevistas ocorreu entre março e setembro de 2023, sendo utilizado um roteiro semiestruturado. Considerando que se trata de investigação para um Programa de Mestrado Profissional e do curto tempo para a pesquisa, optou-se pela quantidade pré-definida de 14 participantes. As entrevistas foram gravadas, ouvidas na totalidade, transcritas e submetidas à Análise de Conteúdo, seguindo a modalidade de Análise Temática. Resultados e discussão: foram organizadas três categorias de análise: a primeira aborda a participação dos consórcios na Rede de Atenção à Saúde, a qual foi relacionada com a referência e contrarreferência, Transporte Sanitário Eletivo, atenção especializada e compra de medicamentos. Na segunda categoria, foi apresentado o alcance das finalidades propostas, abordando a atenção especializada e o consórcio de saúde como uma ferramenta importante para os municípios de pequeno porte. Na terceira e última categoria, foram apresentadas as potencialidades e fragilidades, com destaque para a discussão de pontos como a distância do consórcio, o valor dos procedimentos, a variedade de procedimentos e a qualidade do serviço. O estudo revelou que os participantes reconhecem a importância do consórcio para a integração da Rede de Atenção à Saúde. Contudo, mesmo sabendo da importância dos consórcios, nem sempre os serviços são prestados da melhor maneira para os pacientes do SUS. Considerações finais: durante a realização deste estudo, ficou evidente a necessidade de os gestores entenderem a Rede de Atenção à Saúde e saber da importância que os consórcios têm na rede para ajudar os municípios a prestarem os serviços para a população. Cabe ressaltar que o consórcio de saúde representa uma valiosa estratégia que pode auxiliar os municípios a fortalecerem seu fluxo dentro da Rede de Atenção à Saúde.


Introduction: one of the principles of the Unified Health System (UHS) is the decentralization of health services, with a single direction in each sphere of government and states and municipalities having shared responsibility for the management of public policies. Municipal autonomy became more feasible through cooperation agreements between entities interested in achieving the same objective. This cooperation results in interfederative consortia, which are voluntary associations whether through municipalities, states and/or unions. As in other regions of the country, health consortia in Minas Gerais exist due to a need for municipalities to come together, as alone they would not be able to provide a certain type of service to society. Evaluation needs to be thought of not only as a judgment of the service being provided, but also as an opportunity for change. Objective: to evaluate the services provided by Intermunicipal Health Consortia in Minas Gerais from the perspective of municipal managers. Methodology: from a methodological point of view, this is a research with a qualitative approach, which was carried out with municipal health managers in the state of Minas Gerais in the 14 Health Macroregions. Data were collected through interviews with a semi-structured script, from February to September 2023. The project was submitted to the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Minas Gerais and data collection only began after approval. The interviews took place between March and September 2023, using a semi-structured script. Considering that this is research for a Professional Master's Program and the short time for the research, a pre-defined number of 14 participants was chosen. The interviews were recorded, listened to in full, transcribed and submitted to Content Analysis, following the Thematic Analysis modality. Results and discussion: three categories of analysis were organized: the first addresses the participation of consortia in the Health Care Network, which was related to referral and counter-referral, Elective Health Transport, specialized care and purchase of medicines. In the second category, the scope of the proposed purposes was presented, addressing specialized care and the health consortium as an important tool for small municipalities. In the third and final category, the strengths and weaknesses were presented, with emphasis on the discussion of points such as the distance from the consortium, the value of the procedures, the variety of procedures and the quality of the service. The study revealed that participants recognize the importance of the consortium for the integration of the Health Care Network. However, even knowing the importance of consortia, services are not always provided in the best way for SUS patients. Final considerations: during this study, it became evident the need for managers to understand the Health Care Network and know the importance that consortia have in the network to help municipalities provide services to the population. It is worth noting that the health consortium represents a valuable strategy that can help municipalities strengthen their flow within the Health Care Network.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most produced synthetic monomers in the world and is widespread in the environment. BPA was replaced by bisphenol analogues (BP) because of its adverse effects on life. Bacteria can degrade BPA and other bisphenol analogues (BP), diminishing their environmental concentrations. This study aimed to summarize the knowledge and contribute to future studies. In this review, we surveyed papers on bacterial degradation of twelve different bisphenol analogues published between 1987 and June 2022. A total of 102 original papers from PubMed and Google Scholar were selected for this review. Most of the studies (94.1%, n = 96) on bacterial degradation of bisphenol analogues focused on BPA, and then on bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS). The number of studies on bacterial degradation of bisphenol analogues increased more than six times from 2000 (n = 2) to 2021 (n = 13). Indigenous microorganisms and the genera Sphingomonas, Sphingobium, and Cupriavidus could degrade several BP. However, few studies focussed on Cupriavidus. The acknowledgement of various aspects of BP bacterial biodegradation is vital for choosing the most suitable microorganisms for the bioremediation of a single BP or a mixture of BP.

Background: The gastrointestinal (GI) bacterial communities of sea lions described to date have occasionally revealed large intraspecific variability, which may originate from several factors including different methodological approaches. Indeed, GI bacterial community surveys commonly rely on the use of a single hypervariable region (HR) of 16S rRNA, which may result in misleading structural interpretations and limit comparisons among studies. Here, we considered a multi-locus analysis by targeting six HRs of 16S rRNA with the aims of (i) comprehensively assessing the GI bacterial consortium in rectal samples from Zalophus californianus pups and (ii) elucidating structural variations among the tested HRs. In addition, we evaluated which HRs may be most suitable for identifying intrinsic, structurally related microbiome characteristics, such as geographic variations or functional capabilities. Methods: We employed a Short MUltiple Regions Framework (SMURF) approach using the Ion 16S™ Metagenomic Kit. This kit provides different proprietary primers designed to target six HRs of the 16S rRNA gene. To date, the only analytical pipeline available for this kit is the Ion Reporter™ Software of Thermo Fisher Scientific. Therefore, we propose an in-house pipeline to use with open-access tools, such as QIIME2 and PICRUSt 2, in downstream bioinformatic analyses. Results: As hypothesized, distinctive bacterial community profiles were observed for each analyzed HR. A higher number of bacterial taxa were detected with the V3 and V6-V7 regions. Conversely, the V8 and V9 regions were less informative, as we detected a lower number of taxa. The synergistic information of these HRs suggests that the GI microbiota of Zalophus californianus pups is predominated by five bacterial phyla: Proteobacteria (~50%), Bacteroidetes (~20%), Firmicutes (~18%), Fusobacteria (~7%), and Epsilonbacteraeota (~4%). Notably, our results differ at times from previously reported abundance profiles, which may promote re-evaluations of the GI bacterial compositions in sea lions and other pinniped species that have been reported to date. Moreover, consistent geographic differences were observed only with the V3, V4, and V6-V7 regions. In addition, these HRs also presented higher numbers of predicted molecular pathways, although no significant functional changes were apparent. Together, our results suggests that multi-locus analysis should be encouraged in GI microbial surveys, as single-locus approaches may result in misleading structural results that hamper the identification of structurally related microbiome features.
