RESUMO

Chrysobalanus icaco L. is a tree found in America and Africa. In Brazil it can be found in the biome along the coast. It has great food potential and its fruits, named guajiru, are consumed by fishing communities in natura and processed as jams and jellies. However, the literature on this tree species is limited. This study aims to describe the element contents and physicochemical characteristics of the C. icaco fruits from two regions in Brazil and investigate if they influence its sensory characteristics. The fruits were collected in the Northeastern region of Brazil in Maracajaú, State of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) and in Salvador, Bahia (BA). The morphometric characteristics, color, texture, and sensory analyses were carried out on the fruits in natura, and the physicochemical analyses and mineral profile on the pulp homogenized with the peel. The mineral profile showed K > Na > Mn > Mg > Ca > Fe > Mn > Cu > Zn > Ni > Cr, varying from 206 mg/100g (K) to 0.87 µg/100 g (Cr). The fruits from RN presented higher levels of trace and macronutrients, which affected the sensory characteristics, mainly the flavor, and led to better acceptance of these samples as compared to those from BA. The results suggest that C. icaco fruits present a good nutritional profile and sensory acceptance and hence their commercialization could be stimulated as a table fruit or mixed with other fruits.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Licania salicifolia (L.S) Cuatrec., Persea ferruginea (P.F) Kunth, Oreopanax floribundus (O.F), and Psychotria buchtienii (P.B) belong to the families Chrysobalanaceae, Lauraceae, Araliaceae, and Rubiaceae, respectively, which have been used as medicines by communities in the Andes. This study evaluated the leishmanicidal and cytotoxic activities of alcohol and non-alcohol extracts from four Andean plant extracts (L.S, O.F, P.F, and P.B). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extracts were obtained by percolation with solvents of different polarities - hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. Phytochemical screening was conducted based on reported methods. All products were evaluated in vitro to determine the leishmanicidal activity against amastigotes of Leishmania panamensis and cytotoxicity against U937 cells. RESULTS: Flavonoids, triterpenes, and tannins were the main secondary metabolites found. From the results, dichloromethane extracts from O.F and P.B, ethanol extract from P.B, and ethyl acetate extracts of all plants were active, with EC50 <30 µg/mL. Ethyl acetate was the most active extract, which showed EC50 values of 9.8, 14.1, 23.7, and 25.5 µg/mL, for L.S, P.B, O.F, and P.F, respectively. Hexane extracts from P.B and O.F exhibited moderate activity with EC50 values of 84.8 and 87.4 µg/mL, respectively. Hexane and ethanol extracts from O.F, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts from L.S, and all extracts from P.F were not toxic. Alternatively, hexane and dichloromethane extracts from L.S and P.B as well as dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts from O.F displayed high toxicity. CONCLUSION: Based on the activity we observed, ethyl acetate extract can continue in its usage in the search for new antileishmanial drugs, mainly ethyl acetate extract from L.S showed activity comparable to meglumine antimoniate and was not cytotoxic.

RESUMO

Chrysobalanus icaco L. is a native plant of Brazil used as a food source and traditionally for the treatment of various diseases. The aim of study was performed the phytochemical analysis by UPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS, and evaluated acute and repeated dose oral toxicities of the C. icaco L. leaf aqueous extract (AECi). The acute toxicity study was performed using a dose of AECi 2000 mg/kg, while the repeated dose toxicity study, the AECi was administered daily at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, for 28 days. Behavior and mortality of animals were observed during the test period and body weight, as well water and eating consumption. Hematological, biochemical parameters and histopathological examinations were carried out. Phytochemical analysis of the AECi revealed the presence of flavonoids and tannins. Oral single dose of 2000 mg/kg of AECi resulted in no mortalities or abnormal clinical signs. Studies of repeated dose toxicity promoted a reduction in the body weight of treated animals and an increase of hepatic enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in both, males and females. Histopathological analyzes showed alterations in the livers of animals treated with AECi. Thus, this study recommends the population take care when using this species, especially during prolonged periods.

RESUMO

Licania tomentosa is a Brazilian plant species that produces edible fruits, yet there is little information available concerning their nutritional and/or bioactive composition. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional and polyphenol composition of L. tomentosa fruits (pulp and seeds) and measure antioxidant activity in ethanolic extracts. The pulp and seeds were excellent sources of fiber (25.62%-41.70%) as well as minerals and vitamins. L. tomentosa contained no lectins or protease inhibitors (chymotrysin and trypsin) and 12 polyphenol compounds were identified in the seed extracts with a predominance of flavonoids. The seeds also presented antioxidant activities using the DPPH (SC5010.30-15.87 µg/mL), TBARS (IC50 18.46-20.84 µg/mL), and FRAP (RC50 0.203-0.309 µg/mL) assays. Due to its nutrient and antioxidant content, L. tomentosa may be used for food applications.

RESUMO

Chrysobalanus icaco L. is a medicinal plant present in the Brazilian coastline and known for its hypoglicemic and antioxidant properties. Here, we assessed the beneficial metabolic effects of the aqueous extract of C. icaco (AECI) leaves in diet-induced obese mice. Swiss mice were fed standard chow (SC used as controls) or high-fat diet (HFD) to induce obesity. After 10 weeks, mice on each diet were divided into two groups with one group used as control while the other group treated with AECI for 4 weeks resulting in four groups of mice: SC; SC treated with AECI (SC + AECI); HFD; and HFD treated with AECI (HFD + AECI). AECI was administered drinking water at about 200 mg/kg. AECI was able to normalize insulin (13,682 ± 1090 vs. 9828 ± 485 AU, P < .05) and fasting blood glucose (192.8 ± 14.2 vs. 132.3 ± 6.4 mg/dL, P < .05) and inhibit weight gain (39 ± 5.7%) and fat storage in liver (72.60 ± 3.83%, P < .0001), despite the high-fat intake. These findings reinforce the use of AECI in hyperglycemia and highlight the potential extract's effect in preventing weight gain and fat accumulation in liver of diet-induced obese mice.

RESUMO

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Chrysobalanaceae are woody plants with over 500 species in 20 genera. They are among the most common trees in tropical forests, but a sparse fossil record has limited our ability to test evolutionary and biogeographic hypotheses, and several previous reports of Chrysobalanaceae megafossils are doubtful. METHODS: We prepared fossil endocarps and wood collected from the lower Miocene beds along the Panama Canal using the cellulose acetate peel technique and examined them using light microscopy. We compared the fossil endocarps with previously published fossils and with fruits from herbarium specimens. We compared the fossil wood with photographs and descriptions of extant species. KEY RESULTS: Parinari endocarps can be distinguished from other genera within Chrysobalanaceae by a suite of features, i.e., thick wall, a secondary septum, seminal cavities lined with dense, woolly trichomes, and two ovate to lingulate basal germination plugs. Fossil endocarps from the Cucaracha, Culebra, and La Boca Formations confirm that Parinari was present in the neotropics by the early Miocene. CONCLUSIONS: The earliest unequivocal evidence of crown-group Chrysobalanaceae is late Oligocene-early Miocene, and the genus Parinari was distinct by at least 19 million years ago. Parinari and other Chrysobalanaceae likely reached the neotropics via long-distance dispersal rather than vicariance. The presence of Parinari in the Cucaracha flora supports the interpretation of a riparian, moist tropical forest environment. Parinari was probably a canopy-dominant tree in the Cucaracha forest and took advantage of the local megafauna for seed dispersal.

RESUMO

The objective of the present work was to describe the morphology of fruit, seed and the post-seminal development of "oiti" (Licania tomentosa (Benth.) Fritsch.). The size and shape of seeds and fruits were evaluated with a digital calipter ruler and in stereo-microscope and scanning electron microscope. The fruits are drupaceous, ellipticals, monospermics, succulents, indehiscents, with non articulated peduncle, with smooth and glabrous exocarp of yellow to orange coloration; yellow, succulent and fibrous mesocarp and cream, membranaceous endocarp. The fruits dimensions are approximately 6,19cm in length, 3,30cm in width, 39,5g of fresh mass and 17,3g of dry mass. The seeds are exalbuminous, ellipticals, with smooth tegument, with brown coloration, cartaceous to coriaceous, with longitudinally visible raphe, inconspicuous micropyle and inconspicuous hilum, with thick cotyledons, elliptical and plan-convex, with cream to rose color. The embryo is minute, straight, central, with embryonic axis differentiated in plumule and hypocotyl-radicle axis. The length, width and fresh and dry mass of seeds is approximately 4,07cm, 2,18cm, 12,7g and 7,2g, respectively. The germination is criptocotyledonary hypogeal, with alternate-distichous and woolly eophylum, with paracitic stomata and two glands in the base of limb or, rare in the apex, in the abaxial face of leaf.

The present paper analyzes the commercialization of a new medicinal specie in a public market in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the years 2005-2006 semi-structured interviews were made with 15 herbalists. A free list of the most commercialized species (97) was made, and calculated the salience index in witch Eugenia rotundifolia presented a high value. Chrysobalanus icaco is known in the literature as sold as abajurú, and has hipoglicemient properties, proven by pharmacological research. The local population uses this species for these properties, however in the market in question, E. rotundifolia is almost exclusively sold with the same popular name and medicinal property. Until the present time, no pharmacological data exists for this specie. Both species are native and predominantly present in the coastal formations (restinga) of Rio de Janeiro. The attribution of the hipoglicemient property of E. rotundifolia may indicate a correlation, made by the herbalists, with the pharmacology of other Myrtaceae species. The lack of knowledge, erroneous field surveys and problems related with environmental monitoring may be involved with this process.

RESUMO

The pollination biology and breeding system of Couepia uiti was studied. In this species, flowers opened at 06:00 AM anthesis, and nectar production began at around 0800 h, reached a maximum volume from 09:30 AM to 10:30 AM, and decreased thereafter. The nectar sugar concentration increased continuously, but showed an abrupt increase from 10:00 AM to 12:00 AM. Pollen release occurred at about 09:30 AM and was quickly collected. The stigmas became receptive at around 12:00 AM. The pollinators of C. uiti included the bees Apis mellifera, Xylocopa sp. and Bombus sp., and three species of wasps. This conclusion was based on the observation that these hymenopterans had C. uiti pollen on their bodies, visited the receptive flowers, and touched the anthers and stigmas, thereby promoting pollination. Of these floral visitors, A. mellifera was considered to be the most efficient pollinator. However, mixed pollination also occurred. The number of C. uiti flowers visited in the morning (n = 52) was three times smaller than in the afternoon (n = 62), and the species richness of floral visitors was also bigger in the afternoon (eight in the afternoon versus five in the morning). This finding indicated that these floral visitors preferred to exploit nectar rather than pollen. Controlled pollination experiments showed that C. uiti was a self-incompatible species that produced fruits only by cross-pollination. Treatments such as agamospermy and spontaneous and self-pollinations did not produce fruits.

Chrysobalanus icaco (C. icaco) leaves are used in folk medicine (known as Abajeru in Brazil) to control the glycaemia in diabetic patients. Stannous chloride (SnCl2) is a powerful reducing agent used for different purposes and presents cytotoxic and genotoxic effects. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of an aqueous C. icaco extract on the plasmid DNA topology and on the effects of the stannous chloride on DNA plasmid. Plasmid pBSK was incubated with a C. icaco extract in the presence or absence of SnCl2 (200 mg/mL), after that, the agarose gel electrophoresis procedure was carried out. Plasmid incubated only SnCl2 was used as positive control and, as negative control, plasmid incubated with Tris buffer. The gels were stained with ethidium bromide, DNA bands were semiquantified by densitometry. The data showed that C. icaco extract alters the electrophoretic profile and decreases significantly (p < 0.05) the effect of SnCl2 on plasmid DNA. The results obtained in this work could indicate a dose-dependent protective action and a genotoxic effect of C. icaco extract on plasmid DNA.

RESUMO

Couepia grandiflora Benth.

Couepia grandiflora Benth., known popularly as ema fruit, belongs to the family Chrysobalanaceae, and is distributed in tropical and subtropical areas. Plants of this family are used mainly for the treatrnent of the diarrhea. dysentery and malaria. In this work, it was evaluated the cytotoxic, antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activíties of the hexane and ethanolic extracts from C. grandiflora. The cytotoxic activíty of the hexane and ethanolic extracts showed a LC50 of 0.1082 mg/mL and 0.1408 mg/mL, respectively. The ethanolic extract of C. grandiflora showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. while the hexane extract showed activity just against P. aeruginosa. The two extracts did not show activity against Escherichia coli. The Minímum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) of the ethanolic extract were 188, 125 and 188 μL/mL for Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. The evaluation of the antioxidant activity of the hexane and ethanolic extracts showed good results when compared to the reference drugs(EC50=3.1 and 5.6 mg/mL, respectively). It was not detected antifungal activity for hexane and ethanolic extracts from C. grandiflora.
