RESUMO

The increasing water contamination by toxic heavy metals, particularly hexavalent chromium, has become a significant environmental concern. This study explores the pyrolysis of termite-processed biomass, specifically Pinus elliottii particleboard and its termite droppings (TDs), to produce biochar and its application for chromium (VI) adsorption. Termite droppings, rich in lignin, and particleboard, rich in cellulose, were pyrolyzed at various temperatures to assess the effect of biomass composition on biochar properties. The study found that lignin-rich termite droppings produced biochar with higher fixed carbon content and specific surface area than cellulose-rich particleboard biochar. FTIR and Raman spectroscopy revealed significant molecular structure changes during pyrolysis, which influenced the adsorption capabilities of the biochar. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that TD biochar exhibited significantly higher chromium (VI) adsorption capacity, attributed to its distinct chemical composition and enhanced surface properties due to higher lignin content. These findings underscore the crucial role of lignin in producing efficient biochar for heavy metal adsorption, highlighting the practical applicability of termite-processed biomass in water purification technologies.

Water scarcity is a significant global issue caused by the prolonged disregard and unsustainable management of this essential resource by both public and private bodies. The dependence on fossil fuels further exacerbates society's bleak environmental conditions. Therefore, it is crucial to explore alternative solutions to preserve our nation's water resources properly and promote the production of biofuels. Research into the utilization of E. crassipes to remove heavy metals and generate biofuels is extensive. The combination of these two lines of inquiry presents an excellent opportunity to achieve sustainable development goals. This study aims to develop a sustainable wastewater treatment system and generate biohydrogen from dry, pulverized E. crassipes biomass. A treatment system was implemented to treat 1 L of industrial waste. The interconnected compartment system was built by utilizing recycled PET bottles to generate biohydrogen by reusing the feedstock for the treatment process. The production of biological hydrogen through dark fermentation, using biomass containing heavy metals as a biohydrogen source, was studied. Cr (VI) and Pb (II) levels had a low impact on hydrogen production. The uncontaminated biomass of E. crassipes displayed a significantly higher hydrogen yield (81.7 mL H2/g glucose). The presence of Cr (IV) in E. crassipes leads to a decrease in biohydrogen yield by 14%, and the presence of Pb (II) in E. crassipes leads to a decrease in biohydrogen yield of 26%. This work proposes a strategy that utilizes green technologies to recover and utilize contaminated water. Additionally, it enables the production of bioenergy with high efficiency, indirectly reducing greenhouse gases. This strategy aligns with international programs for the development of a circular economy.

This study investigated the genotoxic effects of chromium (Cr) in Hsd:ICR mice, considering factors such as oxidative state, apoptosis, exposure pathway, duration, pregnancy, and transplacental exposure. Genotoxicity was assessed using the erythrocytes' micronucleus (MN) assay, while apoptosis was evaluated in nucleated blood cells. The results showed that Cr(III) (CrK(SO4 )2 and CrCl3 ) did not induce any marked genotoxic damage. However, Cr(VI) (CrO3 , K2 Cr2 O7 , Na2 Cr2 O7 , and K2 CrO4 ) produced varying degrees of genotoxicity, with CrO3 being the most potent. MN frequencies increased following 24-h exposure, with a greater effect in male mice. Administering 20 mg/kg of CrO3 via gavage did not lead to significant effects compared to intraperitoneal administration. Short-term oral treatment with a daily dose of 8.5 mg/kg for 49 days elevated MN levels only on day 14 after treatment. Pregnant female mice exposed to CrO3 on day 15 of pregnancy exhibited reduced genotoxic effects compared to nonpregnant animals. However, significant increases in MN levels were found in their fetuses starting 48 h after exposure. In summary, data indicate the potential genotoxic effects of Cr, with Cr(VI) forms inducing higher genotoxicity than Cr(III). These findings indicate that gender, exposure route, and pregnancy status might influence genotoxic responses to Cr.

A partial least squares (PLS) quantitative chemometric method based on the analysis of the mid-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (MID-FTIR) spectrum of polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) used for the extraction of Cr(VI) from aqueous media is developed. The system previously optimized considering the variables membrane composition, extraction time, and pH, is characterized in terms of its adsorption isotherm, distribution coefficient, extraction percent, and enrichment factor. A Langmuir-type adsorption behavior with KL = 2199 cm3/mmol, qmax = 0.188 mmol/g, and 0 < RL < 1 indicates that metal adsorption is favorable. The characterization of the extraction reaction is performed as well, showing a 1:1 Cr(VI):Aliquat 336 ratio, in agreement with solvent extraction data. The principal component analysis (PCA) of the PIMs reveals a complex pattern, which is satisfactorily simplified and related to Cr(VI) concentrations through the use of a variable selection method (iPLS) in which the bands in the ranges 3451-3500 cm-1 and 3751-3800 cm-1 are chosen. The final PLS model, including the 100 wavelengths selected by iPLS and 10 latent variables, shows excellent parameter values with root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) of 3.73115, root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) of 6.82685, bias of -1.91847 × 10-13, cross-validation (CV) bias of 0.185947, R2 Cal of 0.98145, R2 CV of 0.940902, recovery% of 104.02 ± 4.12 (α = 0.05), sensitivity% of 0.001547 ppb, analytical sensitivity (γ) of 3.8 ppb, γ-1: 0.6 ppb-1, selectivity of 0.0155, linear range of 5.8-100 ppb, limit of detection (LD) of 1.9 ppb, and limit of quantitation (LQ) of 5.8 ppb. The developed PIM sensor is easy to implement as it requires few manipulations and a reduced number of chemical compounds in comparison to other similar reported systems.

Mechanisms of Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II) modified zeolite (clinoptilolite/mordenite) and vermiculite were evaluated. Adsorbents were treated with Fe(SO4)·7H2O to saturate their exchange sites with Fe(II). However, this treatment decreased their CEC and pHPZC, probably due to the dealumination process. Vermiculite (V-Fe) adsorbed more Fe(II) (21.8 mg g-1) than zeolite (Z-Fe) (15.1 mg g-1). Z-Fe and V-Fe were used to remove Cr(VI) from solution in a batch test to evaluate the effect of contact time and the initial concentration of Cr(VI). The Cr(VI) was 100% reduced to Cr(III) by Z-Fe and V-Fe in solution at 18 mg L-1 Cr(VI) after 1 min. Considering that 3 mol of Fe(II) are required to reduce 1 mol of Cr(VI) (3Fe+2 + Cr+6 → 3Fe+3 + Cr+3), the iron content released from Z-Fe and V-Fe was sufficient to reduce 100% of the Cr(VI) in solutions up to 46.8 mg L-1 Cr(VI) and about 90% (V-Fe) and 95% (Z-Fe) at 95.3 mg L-1 Cr(VI). The Fe(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), and K+ contents of the adsorbents and solutions after the batch tests indicated that the K+ ions from the [Formula: see text] solution were the main cation adsorbed by Z-Fe, while vermiculite did not absorb any of these cations. The H+ of the acidic solution (pH around 5) may have been adsorbed by V-Fe. The release of Fe(II) from Z-Fe and V-Fe involved cation exchange between K+ and H+ ions from solution, respectively. The reduction of Cr(VI) by Fe(II) resulted in the precipitation of Cr(III) and Fe(III) and a decrease in the pH of the solution to < 5. As acidity limits the precipitation of Cr(III) ions, they remained in solution and were not adsorbed by either adsorbent (since they prefer to adsorb K+ and H+). To avoid oxidation, Cr(III) can be removed by precipitation or the adsorption by untreated minerals.

The quantification of Cr (VI) in the cement matrix is highly important, given the possibility of suffering illnesses including dermatitis, induced nasal carcinoma, and DNA damage produced by inhalation of and/or direct contact with this substance by construction workers. This study presents an analytical validation of the determination of water-soluble Cr (VI) using Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis) with 1.5-diphenylcarbazide. To do so, different performance characteristics were determined: working interval, analytical sensitivity, linearity, limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ), as well as measurement uncertainty, in order to provide better metrological information about the performance of this method. The study also focused on evaluating the impact of use of different types of standard sands (ASTM C-778 and CEN) for preparing mortar cement and extracting water soluble Cr (VI) present in the cement. For this purpose, two cements with different concentrations (2.01 ± 0.21 and 0.75 ± 0.09 mg-kg-1) of Cr (IV) were created to evaluate extraction using three types of treatments: oxidized with potassium peroxidisulfite, non-oxidized, and an alternative method using cement paste. It was observed that mortar cement using ASTM C-778 sand tends to underestimate Cr (IV) content when concentrations are below 0.8 mg kg-1, while at higher concentrations of ~2.0 mg kg-1 it does not generate different results compared to those obtained using mortar cement made with CEN-standard sand. An alternative method called "paste extraction" also showed statistically comparable results with respect to standard mortar for both concentration levels evaluated. Finally, samples of cement marketed in Costa Rica were analyzed using different types of water soluble Cr (IV) extraction methods. The results show concentrations between 0.70 ± 0.13 mg kg-1 and 1.30 ± 0.13 mg kg-1, demonstrating that they comply with the limits established by international standards and national regulations in Costa Rica.

Arbuscular mycorhizal fungi (AMF) associated to plants may represent a promising phyto-remediation avenue due to the widely documented role of these fungi in alleviation of numerous abiotic (e.g. heavy metals) stresses. In the present work, it was the objective to study the dynamics of inorganic phosphorus (Pi) and chromium(VI) (Cr(VI)) and total Cr uptake by the plant-AMF associates Zea mays + R. irregularis MUCL 41833, under increasing (i.e. 0, 0.1, 1 and 10 mg L-1) concentrations of Cr(VI). The plant-AMF associates were grown in a circulatory semi-hydroponic cultivation system under greenhouse conditions. We demonstrated that Cr(VI) had an hormesis effect on root colonization of maize. Indeed, at 0.1 and 1 mg L-1 Cr(VI), root colonization was increased by approximately 55% as compared to the control (i.e. in absence of Cr(VI) in the solution), while no difference was noticed at 10 mg L-1 Cr(VI) (P ≤ 0.05). However, this did not result in an increased uptake of Pi by the AMF-colonized plants in presence of 0.1 mg L-1 Cr(VI) as compared to the AMF control in absence of Cr(VI) (P ≤ 0.05). Conversely, the presence of 1 mg L-1 Cr(VI) stimulated the Pi uptake by non-mycorrhizal plants, which absorbed 17% more Pi than their mycorrhizal counterparts (P ≤ 0.05). In addition, the non-mycorrhizal plants absorbed, in average, 8% more Cr(VI) than the mycorrhizal plants. Overall, our results prompt the hypothesis that in presence of AMF, the regulation of uptake of Cr(VI) and Pi by plant roots is done mostly by the fungus rather than the root cells. This regulated uptake of roots associated to AMF would indicate that the symbiosis could benefit the plants by providing a stable Pi uptake in a Cr(VI) polluted environment.

Galvanizing industries generate large amounts of effluents rich in toxic and carcinogenic chromium(VI) species. Effective and sustainable treatments are required to comply with environmental regulations. This work focused on the development of innovative treatments for Cr(VI) by its removal from a galvanizing industry wastewater (pHinitial = 5.9) containing Cr (78 mg.L-1) and Zn (2178 mg.L-1) using the liquid surfactant membranes technique. The membrane phase carrier was Alamine® 336 in Escaid™ 110. For a synthetic solution (Cr(VI) = 353mg.L-1, pHinternal phase = 1.5), 99.9% of Cr(VI) was extracted in three stages ([KOH]internal phase = 0.27 mol.L-1). For the galvanizing wastewater, two selective extractions treatments were proposed: (1) 87% of Cr(VI) and 2% of Zn(II) were extracted in a single stage ([HCl]feed phase = 0.03 mol.L-1, [KOH]internal phase = 0.6 mol.L-1); (2) 95.6% of Cr(VI) and practically no zinc were extracted in a single stage ([HCl] feed phase = 10-6mol.L-1, [HCl] internal phase = 5mol.L-1). In another treatment condition ([HCl] feed phase = 2mol.L-1 and [KOH] internal phase = 1.2 mol.L-1), the simultaneous Cr(VI) and Zn(II) extractions (95% and 70%, respectively) were obtained in a single stage and more than 99% of both metals in three stages. This resulted in a depleted feed phase with 0.01 mg.L-1 of Cr(VI), that allows its discharge, according to the Brazilian legislation (≤0.1 mg/L).

Heavy metal accumulation in mesquite trees (Prosopis laevigata) growing in aluminum, titanium, chromium and zirconium-polluted soils of a semi-arid region in Mexico was investigated using wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis. The results showed that P. laevigata trees can hyper accumulate up to 4100 mg/kg of Al, 14000 mg/kg of Fe, 1600 mg/kg of Ti, 2500 mg/kg of Zn, but not chromium, regarding high chromium concentrations found in soils (435 mg/kg). Since plant-associated microorganism can modulate phytoremediation efficiency, the biodiversity of P. laevigata associated bacteria was studied. Eighty-eight isolates from P. laevigata nodules were obtained; all isolates tolerated high concentrations of Al, Fe, Zn and Cr in vitro. The top-six chromium tolerant strains were identified by 16S rRNA sequence analysis as belonging to genus Bacillus. Bacillus sp. MH778713, close to Bacillus cereus group, showed to be the most resistant strain, tolerating up to 15000 mg/L Cr (VI) and 10000 mg/L of Al. Regarding the bioaccumulation traits, Bacillus sp. MH778713 accumulated up to 100 mg Cr(VI)/g of cells when it was exposed to 1474 mg/L of Cr VI. To assess Bacillus sp. MH778713 ability to assist Prosopis laevigata phytoremediation; twenty plants were inoculated or non-inoculated with Bacillus sp. MH778713 and grown in nitrogen-free Jensen's medium added with 0, 10 and 25 mg/L of Cr(VI). Only plants inoculated with Bacillus sp. grew in the presence of chromium showing the ability of this strain to assist chromium phytoremediation. P. laevigata and Bacillus spp. may be considered as good candidates for soil restoration of arid and semiarid sites contaminated with heavy metals.

Adsorption is widely used in the treatment of effluents and contaminated water. However, the removal of the pollutant alone does not ensure that the effluent can be safely discharged in the environment. Controlling effluent toxicity may become an important tool to ensure that the quality of the treated effluent is compatible with that of the receiving water body. In this sense, this study evaluated the efficiency of rice husk ash (RHA) to adsorb chromium(VI) using the Allium cepa toxicity test. Adsorption was assessed based on the variables adsorption time, initial concentration, and pH. The data obtained were fitted the pseudo-second-order and the pseudo-first-order models, and the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Kinetic analysis indicated removal rates between 43 and 100%. All data were best fitted by the pseudo-second-order model. Also, pH 1 and pH 2 data were best fitted by the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms, respectively. In the Allium cepa test, pH 2 solutions were toxic. At pH 7, the Alium cepa test confirmed the efficiency of chromium(VI) adsorption by RHA, ensuring acceptable germination index values.

BACKGROUND: Leather exposure has been associated with chromium (Cr) and cobalt (Co) contact dermatitis. Cr(VI) in leather is now restricted to <3 mg/kg in the EU. Cr(III) is not restricted. OBJECTIVES: To analyse 29 differently coloured Cr-tanned leather samples from two Nicaraguan tanneries, and to compare their release of Cr, Cr(VI) and Co with that of leathers produced in Europe. METHODS: Cr, Cr(VI) and Co were extracted in phosphate buffer for 3 hours at 25°C according to EN ISO 17075. Atomic absorption spectroscopy and spectrophotometry were used for detection of the metals in phosphate buffer. RESULTS: There was no difference in total Cr or Cr(VI) release between European and Nicaraguan leathers. There was no association between Cr(VI) and total Cr release. Co was released primarily from leathers of one tannery. Cr(III) was released in significantly higher amounts than Cr(VI). CONCLUSIONS: Future investigations and regulations should focus on Cr(III) and Co as well as on Cr(VI).

The aim of this work was to study the adsorption and removal of chromium (VI) ions contained in aqueous solutions using a chitosan-based hydrogel synthesized via chemical crosslinking of radical chitosan, polyacrylic acid, and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the hydrogel synthesis and presence of reactive functional groups for the adsorption of chromium (VI) ions. The chromium (VI) adsorption mechanism was evaluated using non-linear Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, and Sips isotherms, with the best fit found by the non-linear Redlich-Peterson isotherm. The maximum chromium (VI) adsorption capacities of the chitosan-based hydrogel were 73.14 and 93.03 mg metal per g dried hydrogel, according to the non-linear Langmuir and Sips isotherm models, respectively. The best kinetic fit was found with the pseudo-nth order kinetic model. The chromium (VI) removal percentage at pH 4.5 and 100 mg L-1 initial metal concentration was 94.72%. The results obtained in this contribution can be useful for future works involving scale-up of a water and wastewater treatment method from a pilot plant to full-scale plant.

The impact of Cr(VI) in sunflower roots has been studied, focusing on the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Plants were grown hydroponically in the presence of 0, 1.0, 5.0 and 25 mgCr L-1. Methanolic root extracts were analyzed by capillary liquid chromatography coupled through negative electrospray ionization to a quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (capHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS). Using partial least squares algorithm, eighteen features strongly affected by Cr(VI) were detected and annotated as linoleic acid (LA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and sixteen oxidation products containing hydroperoxy-, epoxy-, keto-, epoxyketo- or hydroxy-functionalities, all of them classified as oxylipins. Inspection of the MS/MS spectra acquired for features eluting at different retention times but assigned as a sole compound, confirmed isomers formation: three hydroperoxy-octadecadienoic acids (HpODE), two oxo-octadecadienoic acids (OxoODE) and four epoxyketo-octadecenoic acids (EKODE). Around 70% of metabolites in sunflower LA metabolic pathway were affected by Cr(VI) stress and additionally, four EKODE isomers not included in this pathway were found in the exposed roots. Among ALA-derived oxylipins, 13-epi-12-oxo-phytodienoic acid (OPDA) is of relevance, because of its participation in the activation of secondary metabolism. The abundances of all oxylipins were directly dependent on the Cr(VI) concentration in medium; furthermore, autooxidation of LA to HpODE isomers was observed after incubation with Cr(VI). These results point to the direct involvement of Cr(VI) in non-enzymatic oxidation of fatty acids; since oxylipins are signaling molecules important in plant defensive response, their synthesis under Cr(VI) exposure sustains the ability of sunflower to grow in Cr(VI)-contaminated environments.

The aim of this work was to characterize the coal fly ash from gasification process (G-CFA) and to analyze its potential as hexavalent chromium Cr (VI) adsorbent. The G-CFA was characterized in terms of physical, chemical, mineralogical, and morphological analyses. Bach adsorption studies were carried out in order to evaluate the influence of pH on the adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of Cr (VI). The G-CFA characterization demonstrated that the material possessed potential to be applied as an effective low-cost adsorbent, once it presents 18.82 m2 g-1, 0.036 cm3 g-1, and 7.56 nm of surface area, pore volume, and average pore diameter, respectively. The results also showed well-defined mineralogical phases and high content of siliceous material. The adsorption experiments demonstrated that the material has potential to be used as a chromium adsorbent with high removal efficiencies.

A 3D printed device for the fully automated disk-based solid-phase extraction (SPE) of Cr (VI) from water samples has been fabricated. The compatibility of the use of organic solvents for analyte elution with 3D printed flow devices based on polymers fabricated using stereolithograph​y has been evaluated. The developed methodology comprises the complexation of Cr (VI) with 1, 5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) in acidic medium and the subsequent retention of the complex in a SBD-RPS disk contained within the 3D printed device. A multisyringe flow injection analysis system with online spectrophotometric detection has been used for the automation of the method. The fabricated 3D printed device integrates the different components of the flow analysis manifold, including connectors and mixers, being a powerful approach towards the reproducible construction of highly integrated flow-based manifolds. The extracted Cr (VI)-DPC complex is eluted with a mixture of methanol- sulfuric acid and quantified at 540 nm. The effect on the analytical signal and the optimization of variables were evaluated using multivariate and univariate techniques. A detection limit of 1 ng Cr (VI) and a linear working range of 3.2-600 ng Cr (VI) were obtained using a sample volume of 2 ml. The intra-day and inter-day RSDs were 4.8% (10 µg L-1, n = 12) and 3.4% (n = 5, different day with a different disk), respectively. The applicability of the fabricated 3D printed device has been proved by the determination of Cr (VI) in groundwater, surface water and leachates.

The aims of this investigation were to evaluate the bacterial resistance to zinc, copper, chromium (VI) and lead in surface water streams from Buenos Aires, Argentina; to select a chromium-resistant strain able to remove the metal in batch process and to evaluate the potential of this strain to remove chromium (VI) in liquid effluents. Bacterial resistance to the metals was evaluated by determining the minimal inhibitory concentration. The kinetic of chromium (VI) removal by one of the resistant strains was studied in nutrient broth with 50 and 100 mg L-1 of the metal, as well as an effluent from an electroplating industry. High resistance to all the metals under study was observed in the bacterial communities of the Matanza-Riachuelo basin. A chromium-resistant strain was isolated and identified as Microbacterium sp. It was able to remove 50 and 100 mg L-1 of Cr (VI) in 36 and 66 h respectively, with efficiency higher than 99%. Experiments with liquid effluents showed the ability of the strain to transform 150 mg L-1 of the metal in 84 h, with efficiency higher than 99%. These results show the potential of this native strain for the treatment of liquid effluents that contain chromium (VI).

An evaluation of the chromium(VI) adsorption capacity of four magnetite sorbents coated with a polymer phase containing polymethacrylic acid or polyallyl-3-methylimidazolium is presented. Factors that influence the chromium(VI) removal such as solution pH and contact time were investigated in batch experiments and in stirred tank reactor mode. Affinity and rate constants increased with the molar ratio of the imidazolium. The highest adsorption was obtained at pH 2.0 due to the contribution of electrostatic interactions.

La disponibilidad de recurso hídrico de calidad es un factor de gran interés científico, debido a la gran carga de contaminantes de origen antrópico presente en las fuentes de agua, siendo los metales, de especial atención por la bioacumulación y lamtoxicidad. En el presente artículo, se estudia la adsorción de Cromo hexavalente, usando cáscara de cacao, como material adsorbente, así como dos tratamientos químicos a la misma, con hidróxido de sodio y ácido clorhídrico, evaluando su efecto en la remoción del ión metálico. La medición del metal en solución, se hizo mediante espectroscopia UV-Vis, usando el reactivo difenilcarbazida. Se estudió el efecto del tamaño de partícula en el proceso y el ajuste de la cinética, se hizo con los modelos de primer orden, segundo orden, Elovich y difusión. Se encontró que el modelo que mejor se ajustó a los datos experimentales fue el de Elovich, mientras que la isoterma de Freundlich describe mejor el proceso de adsorción; de este modo, se establece que la superficie catalítica del bioadsorbente es heterogénea, exhibiendo diferentes energías de activación. Además, se observó que la modificación con ácido clorhídrico mejoró la capacidad de adsorción del material.


The availability of quality water resources is a factor of great scientific interest because of the high burden of anthropic contaminants in water sources, with particular attention to metals due to their bioaccumulation and toxicity. In this research the adsorption of hexavalent chromium using cocoa shell as adsorbent material, as well as two chemical treatments with sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid was studied. The effect of removing this metal-ion was evaluated. Measurement of this metal in aqueous solution was realized by UV-Vis spectroscopy using diphenylcarbazide reagent. The effect of particle size in the process was studied and the adjustment of the kinetics was done with models of first order, second order, Elovich and diffusion It was found that the model with the best fit to the experimental data was Elovich, while Freundlich´s isotherm describes the adsorption process in a better way. Thereby it was established that the catalytic surface of this bioadsorbent is heterogeneous, exhibiting different energies of activation. Furthermore it was observed that the modification with hydrochloric acid improved the adsorption capacity of this material.

Over the past few decades, reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) has been studied in many physicochemical contexts. In this research, we reveal the mechanism underlying the favorable effect of Mn(II) observed during Cr(VI) reduction by oxalic acid using liquid chromatography with spectrophotometric diode array detector (HPLC-DAD), nitrogen microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry (HPLC-MP-AES), and high resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-QTOFMS). Both reaction mixtures contained potassium dichromate (0.67 mM Cr(VI)) and oxalic acid (13.3mM), pH 3, one reaction mixture contained manganese sulfate (0.33 mM Mn(II)). In the absence of Mn(II) only trace amounts of reaction intermediates were generated, most likely in the following pathways: (1) Cr(VI)→ Cr(IV) and (2) Cr(VI)+Cr(IV)→ 2Cr(V). In the presence of Mn(II), the active reducing species appeared to be Mn(II) bis-oxalato complex (J); the proposed reaction mechanism involves a one-electron transfer from J to any chromium compound containing CrO bond, which is reduced to CrOH, and the generation of Mn(III) bis-oxalato complex (K). Conversion of K to J was observed, confirming the catalytic role of Mn(II). Since no additional acidification was required, the results obtained in this study may be helpful in designing a new, environmentally friendly strategy for the remediation of environments contaminated with Cr(VI).

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi o de avaliar as alterações dependentes da dose de dicromato de potássio (0, 12, 24 e 36 mg.kg-1 ) no tecido hepático, após suplementação com probiótico em dosagens 0 ou 0,2%, em 80 ratos machos. A ingestão oral por 90 dias de doses crescentes de dicromato de potássio produziu sinais clínicos de toxicidade frente à análise histopatológica (p< 0,05) e atividades séricas enzimáticas (p< 0,05), dos marcadores de função hepática. A inclusão do probiótico na dieta mitigou os efeitos nos parâmetros estudados.(AU)


This work aims to evaluate the alterations, depending on the dose of potassium dichromate (0, 12, 24 and 36 mg.kg-¹), in liver tissue after supplementation with probiotic at dosages 0 or 0.2% in 80 male rats. Oral ingestion done for 90 days of increasing amounts of potassium dichromate produced clinical signs of toxicity compared to histopathological analysis (p˂0.05), and seric enzymatic activities (p˂0.05), markers of hepatic function. The inclusion of probiotics to the diet mitigated the effects on the studied parameters.(AU)
