RESUMO

PREMISE: Increasingly complete phylogenies underpin studies in systematics, ecology, and evolution. Myrteae (Myrtaceae), with ~2700 species, is a key component of the exceptionally diverse Neotropical flora, but given its complicated taxonomy, automated assembling of molecular supermatrices from public databases often lead to unreliable topologies due to poor species identification. METHODS: Here, we build a taxonomically verified molecular supermatrix of Neotropical Myrteae by assembling 3909 published and 1004 unpublished sequences from two nuclear and seven plastid molecular markers. We infer a time-calibrated phylogenetic tree that covers 712 species of Myrteae (~28% of the total diversity in the clade) and evaluate geographic and taxonomic gaps in sampling. RESULTS: The tree inferred from the fully concatenated matrix mostly reflects the topology of the plastid data set and there is a moderate to strong incongruence between trees inferred from nuclear and plastid partitions. Large, species-rich genera are still the poorest sampled within the group. Eastern South America is the best-represented area in proportion to its species diversity, while Western Amazon, Mesoamerica, and the Caribbean are the least represented. CONCLUSIONS: We provide a time-calibrated tree that can be more reliably used to address finer-scale eco-evolutionary questions that involve this group in the Neotropics. Gaps to be filled by future studies include improving representation of taxa and areas that remain poorly sampled, investigating causes of conflict between nuclear and plastid partitions, and the role of hybridization and incomplete lineage sorting in relationships that are poorly supported.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Caryomene comprises five species distributed in South America. For more than half a century, the genus has not received taxonomic treatment. However, many recent collections were carried out in Amazonia and new occurrences need to be inserted. The present study aimed to elaborate a synoptic treatment of the species collected in Amazonia and botanical specimens from 32 herbaria. The results pointed out the presence of five species in Amazonia, of which C. grandifolia, C. foveolada, C. olivascens and C. prumnoides are new occurrences. The states of Amazonas and Pará represent the two main distribution centers for the species. The fruit characters are the ones that best separate the species. An identification key, descriptions and illustrations of the species that occur in Amazonia are presented.

RESUMO

Introduction: Understanding the use of medicinal plants as herbal medicines is considered essential for the survival and continuity of humanity. Since ancient times, the origin and development of natural and traditional medicine have been intrinsically linked to humanity struggle for survival. Nowadays, ethnobotanical studies are employed as a tool for the preservation and conservation not only of taxonomic biodiversity but also of cultural biodiversity. Methodology: A descriptive research with a quantitative, non-experimental cross-sectional design was carried out. The study was conducted in six Quechua-speaking communities in the district of Incahuasi (3,000 meters above sea level), selected for convenience considering factors such as altitude, accessibility, and proximity to the city. A questionnaire was administered to 32 residents from the communities, who shared their knowledge about medicinal plants, providing relevant information about them. The gender of the participants was considered because men and women use traditional medicine and the knowledge of them is transmitted from parents to children. Results: During the study, a total of 46 medicinal species were recorded, belonging to 42 genera and 22 botanical families. The most representative medicinal families used by the informants of the communities were Asteraceae (30.4%) and Lamiaceae (15.2%). It is also worth mentioning the genera Salvia and Baccharis, with three and two species respectively, which are commonly used to treat various ailments and diseases. Conclusions: Ethnobotanical information was collected on the medicinal plants used by the community members of the selected communities in Incahuasi, and the corresponding data were recorded. A total of 46 plants were collected, with the majority belonging to the Asteraceae and Lamiaceae families.

The former's observations were better, but his contributions were silenced by Humboldt and other actors such as José Celestino Mutis. Caldas changed from a passive position of accepted subordination to one of self-advocacy, but his arguments were not widely publicized, in part because his results did not favor commercial interests and he lacked connections. Caldas used similar techniques to Humboldt to appropriate and systematize knowledge about cinchonas, silencing various sources.

RESUMO

Abstract speciesLink is a large-scale biodiversity information portal that exists thanks to a broad collaborative network of people and institutions. CRIA's involvement with the scientific community of Brazil and other countries is responsible for the significant results achieved, currently reaching more than 15 million primary biodiversity data records, 95% of which are associated with preserved specimens and about 25% with high-quality digital images. The network provides data on over 200,000 species, of which over 110,000 occur in Brazil. This article describes thematic networks within speciesLink, as well as some of the most useful tools developed. The importance and contributions of speciesLink are outlined, as are concerns about securing stable budgetary support for such biodiversity data e-infrastructures. Here we review the value of speciesLink as a major source of biodiversity information for research, education, informed decision-making, policy development, and bioeconomy.

RESUMO

Blueberries are valued for their taste and their high nutritional benefits, including their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In vitro culturing is an alternative method for clonal propagation, and has been used in many biotechnological studies. Most blueberry research is concentrated on highbush and lowbush taxa (Vaccinium corymbosum and Vaccinium angustifolium respectively), with only limited investigations of rabbiteye cultivars (Vaccinium virgatum) that are more suitable for subtropical climates and regions with warmer winters as a result of climate change. There is therefore a need to determine in vitro protocols for that species and group of cultivars. We examined here adventitious shoot regeneration in the 'Delite' rabbiteye blueberry cultivar. Leaf explants were cultured in vitro in Woody Plant Medium (WPM), and the effects of different thidiazuron (TDZ) concentrations, the orientation of the leaf (adaxial or abaxial surface in contact with the medium), and two portions of the leaf segment (basal or apical) were examined. De novo shoot development was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. All concentrations of TDZ used showed similar survival and regeneration rates; 0.5 µM TDZ showed high efficiency in regenerating adventitious shoots (100%, with 57 adventitious shoots/explant), as did the adaxial surface in contact with the medium using either the apical or the basal portion of the leaf (97% shoot regeneration, 47.5 adventitious shoots/explant). Anatomical analyses showed direct and indirect organogenesis. The shoots developed leaf primordia with stomata, trichomes, and well-developed vascular tissues, with further elongation and rooting of the plants. We therefore describe here a high-efficiency regeneration method through de novo shoot organogenesis using TDZ in foliar explants of rabbiteye blueberry, with direct and indirect organogenesis.

RESUMO

Mountains support a great diversity of species and habitat types. Grasslands are the dominant landscape in the Andes and play an important ecological role. However, they are threatened by many factors, including climate change and human activities. The spatial distribution of species that compose, and the ecological and evolutionary factors that provide for the spatial biodiversity patterns, are little known. The largest Poa L. (Poaceae) genera are widely diversified and distributed in the Andes. In particular, P. scaberula Hook. f. shows great environmentally mediated phenotypic plasticity, and is distributed from North America to the tip of South America. However, the impact of environmental variables has on the spatial distribution of this species, remain largely unknown. Using high-resolution climatic data, herein we modeled the current suitable habitat for P. scaberula and identified the main climatic variables that best predict its potential distribution. In addition, we assess the species status in the predicted habitats through herbarium data and relate it with species distribution models. The models showed that P. scaberula has a suitable habitat of ca. 162.747 km2 along the Andes and high elevation regions. The most influential variables with a 68.5% contribution to the distribution of the species, particularly high elevation areas, included mean cold hardiness, water vapor pressure and temperature seasonality. The areas of greatest suitability with the highest occurrence of the species were identified geographically by the models. The present study provides useful information that can assist in the identification of areas where the species is most sensitive to different variables, including climate change and human activities and contributes in assessing the conservation status of Andean grassland at a regional scale.

The procedures of several scientific disciplines are changing with the spreading of new information and communication technologies, even the most traditional, like botanical taxonomy. Here we document the review and validation, by collaborative efforts, on the first version of the taxonomic key for the identification of the fern genera in Guatemala. An upgraded version was composed which is easier to follow and more precise. It is intended to be accessible for a wide range of interested people, more than just the fern specialists. Along with this paper, electronic supplementary documents are published too, including the most recent version of the key, an annotated list of taxonomic categories of ferns of Guatemala in the supra-specific levels, and some lists of taxonomic synonymy of the currently valid names, with reference to the old names used in Flora Mesoamericana. With this experience a new milestone has been reached by the national taxonomy, getting over the old paradigm in which taxonomy was an exclusive practice, endeavored by few authorities, to become a more inclusive discipline, embracing the development and revision of its instruments. In the future, we hope to maintain updated all these documents in a more dynamic way, applying new technologies to the taxonomic botany practices.

RESUMO

The biotechnological interest in genus Physalis has increased in the last decades, however, there are still few micropropagation studies of this genus. The objective of this study was to evaluate P. angulata photoautotrophic and photomixotrophic micropropagation with gas exchange under seven light spectra and five concentrations of sucrose. Lighting were yellow, blue, white, red, green, red + blue LEDs and natural light filtered by mesh. Sucrose concentrations were 0, 7.5, 15, 22.5 and 30 g.L-1. Phytotechnical, anatomical features and photopigment contents were evaluated through stem and root segment length, leaf number, leaf area, chlorophyll a and b contents, carotenoids, adaxial epidermis, palisadic and spongy parenchyma and abaxial epidermis. The data were compared by Scott-Knott's mean test and principal components analysis using the R software. Comparing the variables within lighting types, it was observed that only the screen treatment, screen-filtered natural illumination, obtained assessment in all variables. Comparing the levels of sucrose, it was observed that the treatment 15 g.L-1 sucrose obtained the highest number of averages with maximum evaluation. It was concluded that the natural light filtered by screen with 50% of shading allowed the photoautotrophic micropropagation of P. angulata. Better development results were observed in photomixotrophic micropropagation with 15 g.L-1 of sucrose.

Abstract Joaquim Monteiro Caminhoá was one of the most important men of science during the Brazilian Imperial period, with an established career and international recognition. But his historical trajectory has not been properly studied, and it features gaps which can lead to reflections. This article is the result of research examining the scientific production compiled by this scholar and analyzing it with attention to the broader social context in which it was conceived. Caminhoá's production is important proof that scientific production was present in the Brazilian Imperial period during the second half of the nineteenth century, and reveals the richness of thought of this Brazilian scholar.

RESUMO

Recently, Brazilian Federal Police used forensic chemistry and forensic botany techniques on a case. Two packets containing fragmented plant matter were seized and sent for forensic analysis. Forensic chemistry, the gold standard for evaluating plant material suspected to contain illicit substances, did not find illicit materials. Gas chromatography coupled mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified thujone in the botanical material. Thujone is a chemical compound naturally found in many plant species, notably Artemisia absinthium. Because doubt remained, we next used plant DNA barcoding methods. Total DNA from plant tissue fragments was extracted and five different DNA regions were amplified, sequenced, and analyzed using plant DNA barcoding methods. Genetic analysis yielded 30 good quality sequences representing five taxa. Most specimens were identified as A. absinthium. Few studies focus on practical forensic applications of plant DNA barcoding methods using a case solved in a forensic laboratory with its difficulties and limitations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report an effective joint effort of forensic chemistry and botany techniques to assess plant material in Brazil. The availability of a new technical approach for the genetic sequencing of plant species will enhance many forensic investigations and inspire similar initiatives.

The genus Justicia L. can be considered the largest genus of Acanthaceae, with about 600 species. In the Justicia genus, the presence of lignans, flavonoids, terpenoids and alkaloids are reported, which are of great importance in pharmacology. The objective of this study was to observe and record the main classes of secondary metabolites of the leaf structures of the species Justicia nodicaulis (Nees) Leonard, occurring in the area of Environmental Preservation at the University Center of Anápolis - GO. Portions of young leaves (proportion of smaller size) and adults (larger size ratio) were collected, preferably being extracted descendingly from the third node, identified just below the end of the specimen, samples were collected from 10 specimens of J. nodicaulis (Nees ) Leonard along the creek of the experimental area of the University Center of Anápolis. Materials that were purchased for the purpose of performing the phytochemical prospecting and survey of the essential oils. For the qualitative analysis of the classes of secondary metabolites most present in the species, we used methodologies described in the literature of the science of phytochemistry. Among the results, new and adult leaves, coumarins, tannins, anthraquinone heterosides, flavonoids, cardioactive and saponin were obtained. Between the survey of the essential oils, 49 members were obtained more occurring in the analyzed literature.
