RESUMO

Paracloeodes Day 1955 is represented in America by 22 species, sixteen of them are present in South America (Cruz et al. 2018b). The systematic of the genus is mainly based on nymphs (Nieto Salles 2006; Emmerich Nieto 2009; Lima et al. 2010; Cruz et al. 2017) but the association of both stages was recognized to improve the taxonomy of the genus (Cruz et al. 2018a, b). All species are known from the nymphal stage, eleven of them are known from male adults. Paracloeodes eurybranchus is known from nymphs and female adults from Argentina and Brazil. We here describe the male imago and give some additional data for the female imago. The nymphs were collected in small pools on the banks of Los Sauces river. The entire river has a sandy substrate. Along with them, nymphs of Americabaetis alphus Lugo-Ortiz McCafferty 1996 were also collected.

RESUMO

A new species of Moribaetis is described based on nymphs from the Nicoya peninsula. The new species can be distinguished from the other described species of the genus, among other characteristics, by its short antennae, strongly curved lateral branches of the epicranial suture, long mandibular incisors projected beyond labrum margin, violet-colored gills, and a distinctive triangular projection on paraproct. Moribaetis brachiostrinus, M. macaferti and M. salvini share certain characters that set them apart from M. maculipennis suggesting that the latter represents a separate branch within this genus. M. brachiostrinus has the lowest altitudinal distribution of the genus in Costa Rica and represents the first record of a Moribaetis occurring on the oldest emerged lands in the country. Comments on the age-related changes in the mandibular incisors and a key to mature nymph of Moribaetis species are also provided.

RESUMO

The genus Cryptonympha includes three species: C. copiosa Lugo-Ortiz McCafferty, 1998; C. dasilvai Salles Francischetti, 2004 and C. genevievae Thomas, Manchon Glémet, 2013, known only from the nymphal stage. A description of the nymph of a fourth representative, Cryptonympha tracheata sp. n. is provided here, based on material collected in a blackwater stream on the slopes of the Cerro Duida mountain in south-western Venezuela. The nymph of the new species can be easily distinguished from the other species of the genus by very long tracheal gills II-VII, 2.5 times the length of each tergum, gill I small, nearly half length of gill IV and by posterior margin of terga with rounded spines. A complete description of the new species and a key for nymphs of all known Cryptonympha species are provided.

RESUMO

In a benthic community on a continuous flat granite substrate in a third-order coastal forest stream, the dominant chironomid (Cricotopus) increased in number when shrimps (Macrobrachium olfersi and Potimirim glabra) and baetid ephemeropterans were excluded by electricity. The response appeared to be mediated by an increase in periphyton and sediments, rather than a reduction of direct predation or interference. Chironomids, periphyton and sediments decreased significantly compared to the control when shrimps only were excluded. Baetid ephemeropteran appeared to be the most important determinants of periphyton and sediment mass; the density of chironomids appeared to follow the quantity of periphyton and sediments.

The new species, Cloeodes auwe sp. nov., can be differentiated from the other known species of the genus by the following characteristics: body color pattern, long and two-segmented maxillary palp, third segment of labial palp robust and apically truncate, long tarsal claws (0.5 times the length of the respective tarsus), hind wing pads absent, and number of spines on the posterior margin of the third tergite and on the paraproct. Besides this new species, the following taxa of Baetidae were also found: Adebrotus amazonicus, Americabaetis alphus, Apobaetis sp., Aturbina georgei, Baetodes sp., Callibaetis sp.1, Callibaetis sp.2, Camelobaetidius janae, Cryptonympha sp., Harpagobaetis gulosus, Paracloeodes binodulus, Spiritiops silvudus, Waltzoyphius fasciatus, and Zelusia principalis.

RESUMO

The adults of Camelobaetidius billi Thomas & Dominique, 2000 are described for the first time. They can be distinguished from the other known adults of the genus by the following combination of characters: in males, turbinate portion of the compound eyes orange, abdominal color pattern, and the shape and relative length of the forceps articles; in females by the abdominal color pattern. The specimens were collected at Presidente Figueiredo, State of Amazonas, Brazil, and represent the first report of the species in Brazil.
