RESUMO
We aimed to determine the association between the seropositivity to Toxoplasma gondii and the ABO and Rh blood groups in 2,053 people. ABO and Rhesus blood groups and anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies were determined using commercially available assays. Of the 2,053 people studied, 171 (8.3%) were positive for anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies. Sixty-five (38.0%) and 36 (21.1%) of these 171 individuals had high anti-T. gondii IgG antibody levels (≥150 IU mL-1) and anti-T. gondii IgM antibodies, respectively. We found the following prevalences of T. gondii infection among the ABO groups: 8.5% in group A, 4.3% in group B, 4.7% in group AB, and 8.9% in group O (P = 0.19). The prevalences of T. gondii infection among Rh groups were: 8.4% in the Rh-positive group and 7.1% in the Rh-negative group (P = 0.58). Logistic regression analysis showed that the frequencies of ABO and Rh blood groups were similar (P > 0.05) among people with positive and negative serology for anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies, with high (≥150 IU mL-1) and lower (<150 IU mL-1) levels of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies, and with positive and negative serology for anti-T. gondii IgM antibodies. Results does not support an association between T. gondii infection and ABO and Rh blood groups.
RESUMO
Abstract The main purpose of this study was to find out a possible association between ABO blood groups or Rh and diabetes mellitus (DM) in the local population of eight (8) different towns of Karachi, Pakistan. For this purpose a survey was carried out in Karachi to have a practical observation of these towns during the period of 9 months from June 2019 to Feb. 2020. Out of eighteen (18) towns of Karachi, samples (N= 584) were collected from only eight (8) Towns of Karachi and gave a code-number to each town. Diabetic group sample was (n1=432) & pre-diabetes sample was (n2 =152). A standard Abbot Company Glucometer for Random Blood Sugar (RBS) and Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) tests, standard blood anti sera were used for ABO/Rh blood type. Health assessment techniques were performed ethically by taking informed consent from all registered subjects. Finally data was analyzed by SPSS version 20.0. In our current study, the comparison of ABO blood groups frequencies between diabetic and pre-diabetic individuals were carried out. The percentage values of blood Group-B as given as: (32% in DM vs. 31% in pre-diabetics), followed by blood Group-O as: (18% in DM vs. 11% in pre-diabetics). Contrary to Group-"B" & "O", blood Group-A and Group-AB were distribution percentage higher pre-diabetic as compared to DM patients, as given as: Group-A (32% in pre-diabetics vs. 26% in DM) & Group-AB (26% in pre-diabetics vs. 24% in diabetic's patients). In addition, percentage distribution of Rh system was also calculated, in which Rh+ve Group was high and more common in DM patients as compared to pre-diabetics; numerically given as: Rh+ve Group (80% in DM vs. 72% in pre-diabetics). Different views and dimensions of the research topic were studied through literature support, some have found no any association and some established a positive association still some were not clear in making a solid conclusion. It is concluded that DM has a positive correlation with ABO blood groups, and people with Group-B have increased susceptibility to DM disease.

RESUMO
Previous studies detail that different blood groups are associated with incidence of oxidative stress-related diseases such as certain carcinomas. Bioactive compounds represent an alternative for preventing this oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to elucidate the impact of blood groups on the erythroprotective potential of fucoxanthin, ß-Carotene, gallic acid, quercetin and ascorbic acid as therapeutic agents against oxidative stress. The impact of ABO blood groups on the erythroprotective potential was evaluated via the antioxidant capacity, blood biocompatibility, blood susceptibility and erythroprotective potential (membrane stabilization, in vitro photostability and antihemolytic activity). All tested antioxidants exhibited a high antioxidant capacity and presented the ability to inhibit ROOâ¢-induced oxidative stress without compromising the cell membrane, providing erythroprotective effects dependent on the blood group, effects that increased in the presence of antigen A. These results are very important, since it has been documented that antigen A is associated with breast and skin cancer. These results revealed a probable relationship between different erythrocyte antigens with erythroprotective potential, highlighting the importance of bio-targeted drugs for groups most susceptible to certain chronic-degenerative pathologies. These compounds could be applied as additive, nutraceutical or encapsulated to improve their bioaccessibility.
RESUMO
Abstract Although ABO blood groups have been associated with cardiovascular disease, little is known about whether ABO blood groups contribute to the risk of the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in elderly individuals with hypertension. This study was aimed to explore this association. A total of 793 hypertensive patients aged ≥60 years out of 2095 patients who underwent primary coronary angiography were retrospectively included. They were divided into CAD and non-CAD groups. Demographic and clinical characteristics, ABO blood groups and other biochemical parameters were compared. Further evaluation was performed to determine the impact of ABO blood groups on CAD severity using the Gensini score and the number of significantly diseased vessels. A logistic regression model was constructed to identify the association of ABO blood groups with CAD. There was a substantial difference in the distribution of ABO blood groups in elderly and hypertensive adults with and without CAD (p=0.022). Hypertensive patients with CAD had a significantly lower proportion of the blood group B than those without CAD (p=0.008). Compared to those with non-Blood group B, hypertensive elderly with a blood group B tended to have significantly lower concentrations of TC, LDL -C and Apo B, and a lower number of significantly stenosed vessels. The blood group B was found to be an independent protective factor for CAD in elderly with hypertension. The blood group B is significantly associated with a decreased risk of CAD and is inversely correlated with the severity of coronary stenosis in the elderly with hypertension.
OBJECTIVE(S): This study aimed investigate association of HLA-DRB1 and cytokine polymorphisms with red blood cell(RBC) alloimmunization in Brazilian Myelodysplastic syndrome(MDS) patients with prior exposure to RBC transfusion. BACKGROUND: MDS patients are at risk RBC alloimmunization due to chronic RBC transfusion. However, differences in immune response of MDS transfused patients are not completely known. METHODS/MATERIALS: A retrospective cohort of 87 polytransfused patients with MDS including 28 alloimmunized (PA) and 59 non-alloimmunized (PNA) was evaluated in three Brazilian reference hospitals. HLA-DRB1genotype was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-SSOP (Luminex platform) and cytokine polymorphisms analysed by PCR and TaqMan assays. RESULTS: While HLA-DRB1 allele frequencies did not differ between groups, IL17A 197G > A SNP and IL4 polymorphisms showed significant correlation with RBC alloimmunization. IL17A 197A allele A and AA genotype were significantly more frequent in PA than PNA(A, 46.4% versus 27.1%, p = 0.012; OR = 2.3; 95%CI = 1.1-4.9; AA, 25% versus 6.8%, p = 0.041; OR = 6.2; 95%CI 1.3-30.8). Moreover, significant association of alloimmunization to Rh antigens with IL17A 197A allele and AA genotype was also identified in PA group(A, 45% versus 27.1%, p = 0.036; OR = 2.5; 95% CI 1.1-5.7; AA, 30% versus 6.8%, p = 0.042; OR = 7.9; 95%CI 1.5-42.3). Genotype A1A2 of IL4 intron 3 was overrepresented in PA(50% versus 16.9%, p = 0.009; OR = 4.97; 95%CI 1.6-15.5). Similarly, IL4-590 CT genotype was overrepresented in PA(53.6% versus 28.8%, p = 0.049; OR = 3.3; 95%CI 1.2-9.3). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed no association regarding HLA-DRB1 alleles for RBC alloimmunization risk or protection, however the IL17A 197G>A, IL4 intron 3 and IL4 590C>T SNP was significantly associated to RBC alloimmunization risk in this cohort of Brazilian MDS patients.

RESUMO
Abstract Introduction Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel viral disease with person-to-person transmission that has spread to many countries since the end of 2019. Although many unknowns were resolved within a year and the vaccine is available, it is still a major global health problem. Objective COVID-19 infection may present with a considerably wide spectrum of severity and host factors play a significant role in determining the course of the disease. One of these factors is blood groups. Based on previous experience, it is believed that the ABO blood group type affects prognosis, treatment response and length of stay in the hospital. In this study, our aim was to evaluate whether the blood group had an effect on the length of the hospital stay. To the best of our knowledge, no previous studies have assessed the effect of ABO blood groups, as well as age, on the length of the hospital stay in these settings. Methods In this retrospective cohort study, 969 patients admitted to our hospital between March 15, 2020 and May 15, 2020 were evaluated. The patients were divided into 4 groups according to ABO blood groups. The effect of the ABO blood group by age on the course of the disease, need for intensive care, duration of hospitalization and mortality in patients with COVID-19 infection, especially in geriatric patients, was evaluated. Results Of all the patients, 9.1% required admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), of whom 83% died. The average length of ICU stay was 11 days (0 - 59). The observed mortality rates in blood groups A, B, AB and 0 were 86.4%, 93.3%, 80.0% and 70.8%, respectively, indicating similar death rates in all ABO blood types. When the Rh phenotype was taken into consideration, no significant changes in results were seen. Conclusion As a result, we could not observe a significant relationship between blood groups and clinical outcomes in this study, which included a sample of Turkish patients with COVID-19.

Abstract Introduction The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has been affecting the health and economic, as well as social, life of the entire globe since the end of 2019. The virus causes COVID-19, with a wide range of symptoms among the infected individuals, from asymptomatic infection to mortality. This, along with a high infection rate, prompted efforts to investigate the potential mechanisms of the different clinical manifestations caused by SARS-CoV-2 among the infected populations. Hypothesis One of the possible mechanisms that has been reported is the ABO blood system polymorphism. Indeed, one of the major proposed mechanisms is the presence of naturally occurring anti-A antibodies in individuals of groups O and B, which could be partially protective against SARS-CoV-2 virions. Objective and Method This article aimed to review the published data on the potential effect of the ABO blood group system on the susceptibility to COVID-19 and the disease progression and outcomes. Results The reviewed data suggest that individuals of blood group A are at a higher risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2 and may develop severe COVID-19 outcomes, whereas blood group O is considered protective against the infection, to some extent. However, some of the available studies seem to have been influenced by unaccounted confounders and biases. Conclusion Therefore, further appropriately controlled studies are warranted to fully investigate the possible association between the ABO blood groups and COVID-19 susceptibility and severity.

RESUMO
BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has been associated with negative results in patients with A blood group and with a better evolution in O blood group individuals. AIM: Because the evidence regarding ABO blood groups and COVID was empirically not that clear in our country, we tested the association regarding COVID-19 and blood groups. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Adult patients were enrolled in this prospective, case-control, observational multicenter study. Patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 were assigned to one of three groups based on the clinical presentation of the infection. Age, gender, ABO and Rh blood groups, body mass index, history of diabetes mellitus or high blood pressure, and smoking were recorded directly or from their clinical charts. ABO blood group was obtained from 5,000 blood donors (50% each gender). Atherothrombotic variables were compared with a nation-wide data collection. RESULTS: A total of 2,416 patients with COVID-19 were included (women:39.6%; men:60.4%). There were no significant differences between cases and controls in terms of age. O blood group was the most frequently found in healthy donors and COVID-19 patients, but this blood group was significantly higher in COVID-19 patients vs. healthy donors. ABO blood group was not associated with the final health status in COVID-19 patients. Obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and smoking were significantly more frequent among COVID-19 patients. CONCLUSION: The proposed protective effect of the O blood group in COVID-19 patients could not be reproduced in the Mexican population while some atherothrombotic risk factors had a significant effect on the clinical evolution.

The purpose of this single center retrospective study was to investigate the relationship between HLA and ABO polymorphisms and COVID-19 susceptibility and severity in kidney transplant recipients. It included 720 recipients who had COVID-19 and 1680 controls composed by recipients in follow-up who did not contact the transplantation center for COVID-19 symptoms, up to the moment of their inclusion in the study. HLA-A, -B, and -DRB1 allele groups and ABO frequencies were compared between recipients with COVID-19 (all cases, or separately mild/moderate and severe disease) and controls. The HLA association study was conducted in two case-control series and only associations that showed a p-value <0.05 in both series were considered. No HLA association regarding COVID-19 occurrence or severity met this criterion. Homozygosity at HLA-A locus was associated with COVID-19 susceptibility (odds ratio 1.4) but not severity. Blood groups A and O were associated with susceptibility and resistance to COVID-19, respectively. COVID-19 severity was associated only with older age and cardiac disease, in a multivariate analysis. We conclude that an influence of HLA on COVID-19 susceptibility is supported by the association with homozygosity at HLA-A locus but that there is no evidence for a role of any particular HLA-A, -B, or -DRB1 polymorphism. Thus, we suggest that what matters is the overall capability of an individual's HLA molecules to present SARS-CoV-2 peptides to T cells, a factor that might have a great influence on the breadth of the immune response.

BACKGROUND: Genetic variants in the SLC14A1, ACKR1, and KEL genes, which encode Kidd, Duffy, and Kell red blood cell antigens, respectively, may result in weakened expression of antigens or a null phenotype. These variants are of particular interest to individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD), who frequently undergo chronic transfusion therapy with antigen-matched units. The goal was to describe the diversity and the frequency of variants in SLC14A1, ACKR1, and KEL genes among individuals with SCD using whole genome sequencing (WGS) data. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Two large SCD cohorts were studied: the Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study III (REDS-III) (n = 2634) and the Outcome Modifying Gene in SCD (OMG) (n = 640). Most of the studied individuals were of mixed origin. WGS was performed as part of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program. RESULTS: In SLC14A1, variants included four encoding a weak Jka phenotype and five null alleles (JKnull ). JKA*01N.09 was the most common JKnull . One possible JKnull mutation was novel: c.812G>T. In ACKR1, identified variants included two that predicted Fyx (FY*X) and one corresponding to the c.-67T>C GATA mutation. The c.-67T>C mutation was associated with FY*A (FY*01N.01) in four participants. FY*X was identified in 49 individuals. In KEL, identified variants included three null alleles (KEL*02N.17, KEL*02N.26, and KEL*02N.04) and one allele predicting Kmod phenotype, all in heterozygosity. CONCLUSIONS: We described the diversity and distribution of SLC14A1, ACKR1, and KEL variants in two large SCD cohorts, comprising mostly individuals of mixed ancestry. This information may be useful for planning the transfusion support of patients with SCD.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection occurs in 50% of the world's population and represents a major risk factor for chronic gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer and gastric cancer in developed and developing countries. The distribution of H. pylori virulence factors is diverse and varies geographically, such as the CagA and VacA genes, which have revealed association with disease status. Some findings show increased frequencies of these diseases in O Le (a-b +) and A Le (a-b +) blood type individuals, but other studies not found any relationship between these blood groups and H. pylori infection. AIM: This study aimed to elucidate probable controversies described in the relationship between the ABH/Lewis blood groups and H. pylori, contributing to the severity of gastric diseases in northern the population of Belém -Pará.-Brazil. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 288 samples of patients separate into two groups with gastric cancer and chronic gastritis. Blood, saliva, and gastric biopsy were analyzed using modified Gram and hematoxylin-eosin staining techniques, the enzyme immunoassay Elisa and Multiplex PCR. The antigens expression of ABH and Lewis systems was determined through Dot-ELISA and direct hemagglutination. Proportions were compared in univariate analysis, while the relation between putative risk factors including H. pylori status and ABO/Lewis phenotype was performed using multivariable logistic regression analyses, P-value < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: The findings of this study demonstrate that the likelihood of developing gastric cancer increases threefold if the individual is from A1 Le (a-b +) blood group, has premalignant changes, and infection with H. pylori virulent strains (cagA+/vacA + s1m1). CONCLUSION: Therefore, this study found a significant association between ABO and Lewis phenotypes and H. pylori cagA status into the relevance of the development of gastric carcinogenesis.

Introduction: The ABO, Rh and Kell blood systems are the most relevant from the clinical point of view, due to their immunogenicity and because they are the main causes of hemolytic reactions. Objective: To determine the frequencies of ABO and Rh blood groups, and the frequency of the Kell antigen in patients and donors from Costa Rica. Methods: During the period from 2009 to 2018, the frequencies of ABO, Rh and Kell blood groups in donor and patient samples were obtained from the blood bank databases of three adult hospitals in Costa Rica. To contrast the frequencies of each blood group, a chi-square test of independence of variables was performed, with 95 percent confidence interval. The data were analyzed with the statistical package SPSS version 23. Results: The frequencies of ABO groups in donor and patient samples showed small but significant differences. The frequency of the negative Rh D phenotype was higher in patients (8.0 percent) than in donors (6.1 percent). The frequencies of the antigens C (67.8 percent), c (80.5 percent), E (41.4 percent), e (94.4 percent), and K (3.1 percent) were estimated from donor samples. Conclusions: Blood donor recruitment strategies increase the frequency of negative Rh phenotype in donors compared to patients. The statistics collected demonstrate an increase in the frequency of the O group compared to recent related studies. Finally, the other antigens did not show as much variation compared to previous studies(AU)
