RESUMO

Two new species of Anacroneuria are described. Anacroneuria bandido sp. n. is described from Coclé and Veraguas provinces of central Panama, and A. tuberculata sp. n. is proposed to provide a new name for a species previously identified from Costa Rica as A. magnirufa Jewett, 1958. New locality records are presented for eight species previously reported from Panama. The female of one species from Bocas del Toro province is described under an informal designation. There are now 26 recognized species of Plecoptera known from Panama.

RESUMO

Two new species of Anacroneuria (A. chiriqui sp. n. and A. ngabe sp. n.) are described from Chiriqui Province, Panama, and compared with related species. One new country record, A. divisa (Navás), is herein recorded and new locality records are presented for several species previously reported from Panama. Three unassociated females, including one species from Bocas del Toro province are described under informal designations. There are now 25 described species of Plecoptera known from Panama.

Abstract Plecoptera order is a basal group of aquatic insects, also known as stonefly. In order to contribute to the taxonomic and ecological knowledge of the genus Anacroneuria, nymphs were collected in the upper and low parts of the Caldera River, in the Chiriquí province. For this, field trips were carried out once a month, from January to December of 2015. A total of seven stations were sampled, and nymphs were collected on rocks and submerged leaf litter, manually with entomological tweezers, and with a triangular net; nymphs were later transported and reared in aquarium systems in the laboratory, and their growth was followed. A total of 485 nymphs were collected, with the emergence of 138 adults. Five species of Anacroneuria: Anacroneuriaannulipalpis, A. benedettoi, A. planicollis, A. quetzali, A. marca and two unknown species were obtained after nymphs rearing. The distribution range of A. benedettoi was extended to the Chiriqui province. The first record for A. quetzaliin Panamá is commented. In addition, data of altitudinal distribution, seasonal variability and environment requirements were mentioned. We recommend to expand studies on Plecoptera nymph associations with adult forms in other areas of Panama and the Neotropics, as well as to increase the knowledge about their biology and ecology. RESUMO

Population status of insects of Plecoptera order in Sierra Nevada National Park in Venezuela and its implications for conservation planning. Longitudinal distribution of Plecoptera species were examined along the Sierra Nevada National Park in the Andean region of Merida State, Venezuela. PNSN is one of the largest protected areas and consists of two major sub-basins. Quantitative samples were collected in 7 river tributaries along the PNSN from February to May of 2009, and a total of 135 individuals and 4 species of the genus Anacroneuria were collected. Only three rivers (Nuestra Señora, La Picón y Corcovada) found the presence of stoneflies, the principal component analysis show that the characterization of habitat, current velocity, dissolved oxygen and the absence of human disturbance sources of influence in a suitable habitat for populations. Stoneflies are endangered or have become extinct throughout much of its range due to human activities. Conservation plans must be implemented urgently, in order to avoid recreational areas and/or economic in vicinity thereof. Rev. Biol. Trop. 58 (4): 1299-1310. Epub 2010 December 01.

Knowledge about the biology and ecology of neotropical aquatic taxa is crucial to establish general ecological rules and water protection systems. Based mainly on published data, the present work shows the following biological and ecological characteristics of Anacroneuria species (Klapálek 1909): (a) the wide range of environmental conditions of rivers where Anacroneuria species occur, (b) species number decreases along an increasing elevation gradient, (c) body size increases in relation to the maximum altitude of occurrence, (d) altitudinal range increases with body size, (e) there is a constant relationship between male and female body size, and finally, (f) larger females lay larger eggs. In temperate countries, the family Perlidae in general, and the genus Anacroneuria in particular, are viewed as excellent water quality indicators. We suggest that, considering the complexity of the group's ecology in South America, it should not be automatically considered an excellent bioindicator in the Neotropical region.
