Abstract Introduction The adenomatoid odontogenic tumor is a relatively uncommon odontogenic neoplasm representing about 4.7% of all odontogenic tumors. Objective The aim of this study was to determine the demographic and clinical profile of the adenomatoid odontogenic tumors in a Sri Lankan population. Methods Data gathered from the cases received for a period of 38 years from the Department of Oral Pathology, Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya. Request forms, biopsy reports and electronic data base of the department were used to obtain relevant information. Demographic data including age, gender and location of the tumor were included in the analysis. Results Out of 116 cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, the mean age was 21.02 ± 11.24. It occurs more fre quently in the second decade of life, more prevalent in females, most often associated with the maxilla, predominantly affecting anterior jaw bones and presenting mostly in the right side of the jaw bone. The results from the present study showed the statistically significant relationship with site of occurrence (maxilla/mandible) and age (p< 0.005). Further, depending on whether it occurs in anterior/mid/posterior site also showed a significant relationship with age (p≤ 0.001). However, side of occurrence, left or right or site of occurrence, showed no statistically significance with age (p> 0.05). Conclusion Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor occurs more frequently in the second decade of life with a significant female predominance and the commonest site is anterior maxilla. This study revealed few differences on demographic and clinical presentations of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor from some regions of the world.


Resumo Introdução O tumor odontogênico adenomatoide é uma neoplasia odontogênica relativamente incomum que representa cerca de 4,7% de todos os tumores odontogênicos. Objetivo Determinar o perfil demográfico e clínico dos tumores odontogênicos adenomatoides em uma população do Sri Lanka. Método Os dados foram obtidos dos casos tratados por 38 anos no Departamento de Patologia Oral da Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya. Formulários de solicitação, relatórios de biópsia e o banco de dados eletrônico do departamento foram usados para obter informações relevantes. Dados demográficos, idade, sexo e localização do tumor foram incluídos na análise. Resultados Dos 116 casos de tumor odontogênico adenomatoide, a média de idade foi de 21,02 ± 11,24. Ocorreu com mais frequência na segunda década de vida, e foi mais prevalente no sexo feminino, mais frequentemente associado à maxila, afetou predominantemente os ossos da mandíbula anterior e apresentou-se principalmente no lado direito dos ossos da mandíbula. Os resultados do presente estudo mostraram uma relação estatisticamente significante com o local da ocorrência (maxila/mandíbula) e idade (p < 0,005). Além disso, de acordo com o local de ocorrência, região anterior/média/posterior, também apresentou relação significante com a idade (p ≤ 0,001). Entretanto, nem o lado acometido, direito ou esquerdo, ou o sítio de ocorrência foi estatisticamente significante em relação à idade (p > 0,05). Conclusão O tumor odontogênico adenomatoide ocorre com mais frequência na segunda década de vida, com predominância feminina significativa, e o local mais comum é a maxila anterior. Este estudo revelou poucas diferenças nas apresentações demográficas e clínicas do tumor odontogênico adenomatoide de algumas regiões do mundo.

The mechanical and thermal properties of cryogels depend on their microstructure. In this study, the microstructure of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) cryogels was modified by the addition of ionic (bis (2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate, AOT) and non-ionic (Kolliphor® EL) surfactants to the precursor hydrogels (30 g/L). The surfactant concentrations varied from 0.2 mmol/L to 3.0 mmol/L. All of the hydrogels presented viscous behavior (G″ > G'). Hydrogels containing AOT (c > 2.0 mmol/L) led to cryogels with the lowest compressive modulus (13 ± 1 kPa), the highest specific surface area (2.31 m2/g), the lowest thermal conductivity (0.030 W/(m·°C)), and less hygroscopic walls. The addition of Kolliphor® EL to the hydrogels yielded the stiffest cryogels (320 ± 32 kPa) with the lowest specific surface area (1.11 m2/g) and the highest thermal conductivity (0.055 W/(m·°C)). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated an interaction energy of -31.8 kcal/mol due to the interaction between the AOT sulfonate group and the HPMC hydroxyl group and the hydrogen bond between the AOT carbonyl group and the HPMC hydroxyl group. The interaction energy between the HPMC hydroxyl group and the Kolliphor® EL hydroxyl group was calculated as -7.91 kcal/mol. A model was proposed to describe the effects of AOT or Kolliphor® EL on the microstructures and the mechanical/thermal properties of HPMC cryogels.

A novel functional drink with nutraceutical properties was formulated from the aqueous extracts of Ilex guayusa, and Vernonanthura patens leaves, and cocoa husks. This juice contains various bioactive compounds, such as phenolic compounds and methylxanthines, with antioxidant and stimulant properties of pharmacological interest. However, it is known whether herbal extracts' interaction may have adverse toxic effects on human health. To evaluate this functional drink's innocuity, we estimated the acute oral toxicity (AOT) in experimental mice. This paper presents the AOT evaluation of two formulations of a functional drink (pre-formulation and microencapsulation) at a single dose of 2000 mg/kg of body weight (b.w.). No signs of adverse toxicity and mortality were observed after a single oral dose of 2000 mg/kg b.w. Likewise, no significant body and organ weight changes, food and water consumption behavior, and no histopathological changes were observed in the main organs evaluated. In conclusion, this functional drink can be categorized as low toxicity " according to the Globally Harmonized Classification System (GHS), making it a potential beverage with high nutritional and pharmacological value.

Herein we describe the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) in presence of sulphonated imidazolium salts [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropyl-4-sodiumsulfonatophenyl)imidazolium (L1), 1-mesityl-3-(3-sulfonatopropyl)imidazolium (L2) and 1-(3-sulfonatopropyl)imidazolium (L3)] in water and in a confinement environment created by reverse micelles (RMs). The Au-NPs were characterized-with an excellent agreement between different techniques-by UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential. In homogeneous media, the Au-NPs interact with the imidazolium ring and the sulphonate groups were directed away from the NPs' surface. This fact is responsible for the Au-NPs' stability-over three months-in water. Based on the obtained zeta potential values we assume the degree of coverage of the Au-NPs by the imidazolium salts. In n-heptane/sodium 1,4-bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT)/water RMs, the Au-NPs formed in presence of sulphonated imidazolium salts present different patterns depending on the ligand used as stabilizer. Interestingly, the Au-NPs are more stable in time when the salts are present in AOT RMs (three weeks) in comparison with the same RMs system but in absence of ligands (less than an hour). Clearly, the sulphonated imidazolium salts are very effective Au-NPs stabilizers in a different medium and this generates a plus to be able to use them for multiple purposes.

It is known that Chitosan (Ch) can be used in several applications, such as antimicrobial agent or as drug delivery agent. However, being its water dispersibility very low at physiological pH it is necessary to find a way to improve it. One attractive strategy is to synthesize Chitosan Nanoparticles (Ch-NPs). In this work, a versatile method to obtain Ch-NPs with different and controlled sizes, that were successfully prepared by cross-linking reaction of glutaraldehyde and native chitosan inside of n-heptane/sodium 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate (AOT)/water reverse micelles (RMs) is presented. Highly monodisperse NPs were synthesized as confirmed by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques. The particle size was dependent on the reactants concentration, cross-linking degree and mainly the amount of water inside of the AOT RMs used as nanoreactors. While the cross-linking is quite difficult to control in bulk water, the reaction inside the RMs is more manageable and efficient.

RESUMO

Worldwide, year by year, Fenton's Technologies have been highlighted in both academic and patent scopes, in part due to their proven efficiency as environment-friendly technologies destined to the abatement of organic pollutants, and also by their growing interest to produce industrial applications. Thus, aiming to understand the effective dynamic between two worlds, academy vs patents, the present study performs a comparative analysis about publications on Fenton-based Technologies (FbT). Therefore, in this work, technological foresight techniques were adopted focusing on patent and non-patent databases, employing for this, the Web of Science (WoS) database as a prospecting tool. The main results for the last decade point out to a strong increment of the Fenton's Technologies, as much in R&D as in patent applications in the world. Chinese Universities and firms command the scenario. There is an expressive gap between the academic and patent issues.

The current levels of surface ozone (O3) are high enough to negatively affect trees in large regions of São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil, where standards for the protection of vegetation against the adverse effects of O3 do not exist. We evaluated three O3 metrics - phytotoxic ozone dose (POD), accumulated ozone exposure over the threshold of 40 ppb h (AOT40), and the sum of all hourly average concentrations (SUM00) - for the Brazilian native tropical tree species Astronium graveolens Jacq. We used the DO3SE (Deposition of Ozone for Stomatal Exchange) model and calculated PODY for different thresholds (from 0 to 6 mmol O3 m(-2) PLA s(-1)), evaluating the model's performance through the relationship between measured and modelled conductance. The response parameters were: visible foliar injury, considered as incidence (% injured plants), severity (% injured leaves in relation to the number of leaves on injured plants), and leaf abscission. The model performance was suitable and significant (R(2) = 0.58; p < 0.001). POD0 was better correlated to incidence and leaf abscission, and SUM00 was better correlated to severity. The highest values of O3 concentration-based metrics (AOT40 and SUM00) did not coincide with those of POD0. Further investigation may improve the model and contribute to the proposition of a national standard for the protection of native species.

El tumor odontogénico adenomatoide es una neoplasia de tipo benigno hamartomatosa de origen odontogénico, se presenta en pacientes jóvenes, siendo el género femenino y la región maxilar los más afectados, de crecimiento lento, asintomáticos, se relacionan a órganos dentarios no erupcionados principalmente el canino, clínicamente se clasifica como: folicular, extrafolicular y periférico, el tratamiento para esta lesión es la enucleación y curetaje de la zona afectada sin observarse recidiva.


Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor is a hamartomous benign neoplasia of odontogenic origin. It appears mostly in young patients and females, the maxillary region being the most affected. It is a slow-growing, asymptomatic lesion. It is related to non-erupted teeth, mainly canines. Lesions of this type can be clinically classified as a follicular, extra follicular and peripheral lesions. Treatment for these lesions is enucleation and curettage of affected area. No recurrence has been observed.

In the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (MRC), Brazil, high levels of primary pollutants contribute to ozone (O3) formation. However, little is known regarding the O3 effects in the tropics. Objectives in this study were to characterize the present levels of O3 pollution and to evaluate the relevance of current concentration-based indices for assessing the phytotoxic potential of O3. Changes in O3 concentrations and precursors at 5 monitoring stations within towns of MRC were analyzed. The daily O3 profile was typical for urban sites and showed little yearly variation. Given the permanently foliated forest canopy, yearly rather than seasonal O3 indices were thus more appropriate for estimating the effective ozone dose. With yearly SUM00, SUM60 and AOT40 of 156, 16 and 14 ppm h and confirmed by evidence of O3 injury in foliage, oxidative stress in the MRC has reached levels high enough to affect trees from the Atlantic Semi-deciduous Forest.
