RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objectives: To verify the association between the ABO blood type and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 disease severity. Methods: This review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), using the 2020 PRISMA Checklist and flow diagram, and articles selected for review were analyzed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Rating Scale. The research question was: "Would the ABO blood group influence the risk of infection and clinical course of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2?", The following databases were used: Embase, PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL), Web of Science, Science-Direct and Scopus. The protocol for this review was registered in the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO), number CRD42021245945. Results: We found 798 articles across PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct and Virtual Health Library and 54 articles were included in the final analysis. Among 30 studies evaluating the risk of COVID-19 infection, 21 found significant correlations with ABO blood groups, 14 of them revealing an increased risk in blood group A and 15 studies showing a decreased risk in blood group O. Most studies found no significant correlation with disease severity or mortality. Conclusion: The qualitative assessment of available information suggests that blood group A may be a risk factor for COVID-19 infection and that blood group O may have a protective effect. We were unable to determine a clear association between the ABO blood group and mortality. These conclusions are based on highly heterogenous evidence.

Introduction: Different studies have proposed the relationship between the blood groups of ABO system and the susceptibility to COVID-19 and its importance in the course of the disease. Objective: To determine the phenotypic frequency of ABO and RhD blood groups in a group of patients with active SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, case-control study was conducted to determine the ABO and RhD phenotypic frequency in a group of patients with COVID-19 active disease. Nine hundred twenty eight blood samples and 1050 samples belonging to healthy individuals as control group were studied. The ABO and RhD blood group was determined by the tube agglutination method with anti-A, anti-B, anti-A+B, and anti-D blood classifying sera. The results were expressed in absolute and relative frequencies and the association of the blood group with the severity of the disease was determined by the non-parametric χ2 test with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. Results: A predominance of phenotype O (49.24percent) was observed, followed by A (35.79percent), B (12.68percent) and AB (2.27percent) respectively. The O and B phenotypes showed statistical significance for the occurrence of COVID-19, with p values < 0.05. No statistical significance was found regarding the prevalence of a particular phenotype and the need for intensive care. Conclusions: The relationship of the ABO blood group in the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 and the severity of the disease by COVID-19 requires additional studies, since the current ones are not conclusive(AU)

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between the ABO blood group and preeclampsia. METHODS: This is a case-control study that included patients with (n = 253) and without (n = 457) preeclampsia/eclampsia in Northeastern Mexico. Data were obtained from electronic medical records. Binary multiple logistic regression analysis was used for analyzing the association between the ABO blood group and preeclampsia according to parity status while adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS: Blood groups A, B, and AB showed adjusted odds ratios of 0.6 (95%CI 0.3-1.0), 1.1 (95%CI 0.6-2.2), and 0.3 (95%CI 0.1-1.1) in multiparous women, respectively. No association was found in nulliparous women either. CONCLUSIONS: ABO blood groups were not associated with preeclampsia in Mexican women. [Figure: see text].

RESUMO

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: Gastrointestinal bleeding is an important part of gastrointestinal emergencies. This study aimed to examine the association between ABO blood groups and mortality in patients who were admitted to the emergency department and diagnosed with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. METHODS: The patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Turkey and the data of healthy blood donors were studied. The data of these patients were analyzed, and it was determined that the primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: The study was completed with 274 patients and 274 control group. The mean age of these patients was 65.1±18.2 years, and 64.2% of patients were males. It was found that the in-hospital mortality rate of patients with O blood group (16.2%) was statistically significantly higher than non-O blood group (7.5%) (p:0.032). CONCLUSION: The study concluded that the mortality rate of gastrointestinal bleeding patients with O blood group was higher compared to patients with other blood groups. Physicians can use ABO blood groups to predict mortality risk in gastrointestinal bleeding.

RESUMO

The use of probiotics brings numerous benefits to the immune system, including an increase in antibody production. The development of ABO antibodies may occur naturally due to the bacteria of the intestinal microbiota. However, high titers of ABO antibodies can lead to hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn and can cause immune transfusion reactions. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotic consumption on ABO antibody titers in humans. ABO blood group, ABO antibody titer, and fecal pH and Bifidobacteria concentration were determined for 126 healthy individuals before and after daily consumption of yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis over a 1-month period. No changes in fecal pH were observed after probiotic consumption, regardless of ABO blood group. There was, however, an increase in the fecal concentration of Bifidobacteria in individuals with blood group A but not for those with group B or O. A decrease in the titer of anti-B was observed, despite the increase in the concentration of Bifidobacteria in feces being unrelated to fecal pH, in blood group A individuals. Our study, therefore, sought to understand the relationship between probiotics and the antibody titer of the ABO blood system. Despite our findings, further human studies are needed with other probiotic strains and molecular analyses of the intestinal microbiota.

RESUMO

ABO blood group is long known to be an influencing factor for the susceptibility to infectious diseases, and many studies have been describing associations between ABO blood types and COVID-19 infection and severity, with conflicting findings. This narrative review aims to summarize the literature regarding associations between the ABO blood group and COVID-19. Blood type O is mostly associated with lower rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection, while blood type A is frequently described as a risk factor. Although results regarding the risk of severe outcomes are more variable, blood type A is the most associated with COVID-19 severity and mortality, while many studies describe O blood type as a protective factor for the disease progression. Furthermore, genetic associations with both the risk of infection and disease severity have been reported for the ABO locus. Some underlying mechanisms have been hypothesized to explain the reported associations, with incipient experimental data. Three major hypotheses emerge: SARS-CoV-2 could carry ABO(H)-like structures in its envelope glycoproteins and would be asymmetrically transmitted due to a protective effect of the ABO antibodies, ABH antigens could facilitate SARS-CoV-2 interaction with the host' cells, and the association of non-O blood types with higher risks of thromboembolic events could confer COVID-19 patients with blood type O a lower risk of severe outcomes. The hypothesized mechanisms would affect distinct aspects of the COVID-19 natural history, with distinct potential implications to the disease transmission and its management.

RESUMO

We conducted a case-control study in order to evaluate whether ABO gene polymorphisms were associated with a high risk of developing COVID-19 in a cohort of patients. Six ABO gene polymorphisms (rs651007 T/C, rs579459 T/C, rs495828 T/G, rs8176746 A/C, rs8176740 T/A, and rs512770 T/C) were determined using TaqMan genotyping assays in a group of 415 COVID-19 patients and 288 healthy controls. The distribution of rs651007 T/C, rs579459 T/C, rs495828 T/G, and rs8176746 A/C polymorphisms was similar in patients and healthy controls. Nonetheless, under co-dominant (OR = 1.89, pCCo-dominant = 6 × 10-6), recessive (OR = 1.98, pCRecessive = 1 × 10-4), and additive (OR = 1.36, pCAdditive = 3 × 10-3) models, the TT genotype of the rs8176740 T/A polymorphism increased the risk of developing COVID-19. In the same way, under co-dominant, recessive, and additive models, the TT genotype of the rs512770 T/C polymorphism was associated with a high risk of developing COVID-19 (OR = 1.87, pCCo-dominant = 2 × 10-3; OR = 1.87, pCRecessive = 5 × 10-4; and OR = 1.35, pCAdditive = 4 × 10-3, respectively). On the other hand, the GTC and GAT haplotypes were associated with a high risk of COVID-19 (OR = 5.45, pC = 1 × 10-6 and OR = 6.33, pC = 1 × 10-6, respectively). In addition, the rs8176740 TT genotype was associated with high-platelet plasma concentrations in patients with COVID-19. Our data suggested that the ABO rs512770 T/C and rs8176740 T/A polymorphisms increased the risk of developing COVID-19 and the plasma concentration of platelets.

This study aimed to determine the relationship between ABO blood groups and mortality in patients hospitalized for severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. An observational and retrospective research was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Lima, Peru. A total of 203 patients with a mean age of 62.58 ± 16.45 years were included in the research, out of whom 71.92 % were males. The frequency of O, A and B blood groups were 75.37 %, 17.24 % and 7.39 %, respectively. An association with mortality from severe COVID-19 infection was found with non-A blood groups (O group or B group), with a PR (prevalence ratio) of 2.25 and 95% CI (confidence interval) of 1.07 - 4.71. When adjusting the main variables, the association with PR remained in 2.78 and 95% CI in 1.06 - 7.24. In conclusion, patients hospitalized for severe SARS-CoV-2 infection with O and B blood groups seem to be associated with higher mortality rates than those with A blood group.

RESUMO

Critical antibody titers have been described as factors associated with hemolysis in ABO plasma-incompatible platelet (PLT) transfusions. This study was carried out to describe the frequency of high-titers anti-A and antiB IgM and IgG antibodies in group O apheresis platelet donors, and to explore differences according to the donor characteristics. A cross-sectional study was carried out at the Blood Bank of a National Hospital in Peru from January to March 2019. IgM and IgG antibodies against A1 and B antigens were quantified in 339 platelet donors using the direct hemagglutination technique and the solid-phase adherence technique, respectively. For analysis purposes, two cut-off points; ≥128 and ≥64, were used to define a critical titer for IgM due to a lack of consensus. An IgG titer of ≥256 was also defined as critical. Of the donors, 22.1 % had critical IgM titers when the cut-off point was defined as ≥128. However, when the IgM cut-off was ≥64, the frequency of platelet donors with critical titers increased to 54.0 %. The frequency of donors with critical IgG titers was 23.5 %. Higher IgG titers were associated with female donors while higher IgM titers were negative associated with age. One in two or three platelet donors, depending on the cutoff point used to define a critical IgM titer, had at least one critical titer of anti-A or anti-B antibodies. Early identification of platelet donors with critical antibody titers could prevent passive transfusion of ABO antibodies to non-isogroup recipients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The possibility that the blood group (BG) predisposes to SARS-CoV-2 infection is controversial. OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of BG, anti-IgG SARS-CoV-2, and more frequent symptoms in convalescent health personnel vs controls prior to vaccination. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Analytical cross-sectional design of cases and controls, which included health personnel, from March to June 2020, confirmed with (polymerase chain reaction) PCR-SARS-CoV-2 and negative controls with PCR and anti-IgG-SARS-CoV-2. Participants were questioned concerning symptoms and BG was determined. It was used descriptive statistics and comparative analysis with chi squared, Fisher's exact test, Student's t, and Mann Whitney's U tests. RESULTS: Of 218 workers, 102 (46.8%) were confirmed cases for SARS-CoV-2 (convalescent) and 116 controls. The distribution of BG was similar between cases and controls, being BG-O + the most frequent (52.9%). The risk of becoming infected by SARS-CoV-2 for BG-O compared to BGNo-O showed a lower trend (odds ratio [OR] 0.725, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.416-1.261, p = ns). The BG-A (28.4%) compared with BG-No-A (71.6%) showed a trend of increased risk in BG-A (OR 1.523, 95% CI 0.818-2.837, p = ns). The presence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies was 85% in the convalescent group. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of infected was proportionally higher for BG-A and lower for BG-O. About 15% did not develop SARS-CoV-2 antibodies after overcoming COVID-19 disease.

ABSTRACT Background: Ischemic stroke (IS) is a multifactorial disease that presents high rates of morbimortality in Brazil. Several studies proved that there is a link between the ABO blood group system and the occurrence of thrombotic events. Nonetheless, its association with IS is not well established. Objective: For that reason, the purpose hereof was to investigate the relation between the ABO blood groups and the occurrence of IS in a Brazilian cohort of cerebrovascular diseases. Methods: Five hundred and twenty-nine subjects were included over 12 months, from which 275 presented an IS episode and 254 composed the control group. Blood samples were drawn for direct and reverse serotyping. The control and IS groups were compared regarding the traditional risk factors and the distribution of the ABO blood groups. Results: The IS group presented a higher prevalence of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH), diabetes mellitus, smoking habits, family history, cardiopathy, and sedentary lifestyle in comparison with the control group. The AB blood type prevailed among the patients (5.1 vs. 1.6%; p<0.05) and this group had more SAH cases in comparison with the O type group (92.9 vs. 67.3%; p<0.05). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the occurrence of IS is more frequent among patients of the AB blood type.

ABSTRACT: Introduction: Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and environmental factors are important risk factors for gastritis. Studies show a correlation between the ABO system and gastrointestinal diseases. Aims: To characterize the sociodemographic profile of patients with gastritis and HP and its correlation with the ABO blood group system. Materials and methods: Prospective and descriptive study, carried out in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil, from April / 2018 to May / 2019. Samples were collected from 133 patients who underwent upper digestive endoscopy, histo-pathological analysis, and blood typing. Out of which, 93 patients were diagnosed with gastritis. A sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire was also used. Data analyzed by RCore Team 2019 and submitted to descriptive and inferential analyzes. Results: Average age 53.7 (SD 17.4) with 48 (51.6%) being male (p = 0.018), 56 (65.9%) brown, 45 (52.9%) married and 33 (35.5%) pursuing permanent jobs. Fifty-nine patients (63.4%) out of those with gastritis were blood type O. Among the types of gastritis, 31 (33.4%) were mild enanthematous and 16 (51.6%) of these were type O. There was a prevalence type O in all degrees of inflammatory activity. H. pylori were detected in 29 (31.2%) patients; the most prevalent phenotype being the moderate and severe degrees of infection. Conclusion: Men were mostly affected by gastritis, regardless of the type according to the Sydney classification. The blood phenotype O was more prevalent in patients with gastritis, in those who had inflammatory activity at histology and in patients with moderate, and severe H.pylori. (AU)

RESUMO

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relation between the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) disease (COVID-19) and blood groups and the Rh factor. METHOD: A total of 313 patients hospitalized in the Internal Medicine clinic, at the intensive care unit (ICU) were included in the study. The cases were divided into two groups: those who were COVID-19 positive and those negative, detected with real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction testing. The demographic, clinical, ABO blood groups, and Rh factor data of the cases were obtained from the hospital records retrospectively. RESULTS: The mean age of COVID-19 positive (+) cases was 57.74±16 years and of COVID-19 negative (-) cases, 66.41±15 years. The difference was significant (p<0.001); there was no difference between the two groups in terms of sex (p=0.634). When age was categorically separated in COVID-19 (+) cases, χ2 was extremely significant. Among the ABO blood groups of COVID-19 (+) and (-) cases, χ2 was 4.975 (p=0.174). In the logistic regression, it was 4.1 (p=0.011) in the O blood group. COVID-19 positive test was determined as 13, 4, and 4 times higher in the 31-40, 41-50, and 51-60 age groups, respectively (p=0.001, p=0.010, p=0.003). CONCLUSION: The incidence of COVID-19 has increased in the younger population and in the O blood group. Our findings support that, in this population, the ABO blood groups can contribute to the early detection of COVID-19.

RESUMO

Abstract Introduction: Previous research has suggested that individuals with different blood groups show varied incidences of noise-induced hearing loss. The reduced otoacoustic emissions amplitudes indicate the higher possibilities of outer hair cell damage for noise exposure. Objective: The objective is to analyze the characteristics of otoacoustic emissions, including the occurrence of spontaneous otoacoustic emission and the amplitudes of distortion product otoacoustic emission at certain frequencies in full term neonates with different ABO blood groups. Methods: A total of 80 selected full-term female neonates who passed the initial newborn hearing screen were enrolled into the study, with equal number of participants in four ABO blood groups (Blood Group A, Blood Group B, Blood Group AB, Blood Group O). Measurements of spontaneous otoacoustic emission and distortion product otoacoustic emission were performed in both ears for all participants. Results: (1) The blood group O participants showed significantly fewer spontaneous otoacoustic emission occurrences than the other three blood groups (A = 70%, B = 80%, AB = 67%, O = 25%, p < 0.05). (2) The blood group O participants showed lower DPOAE amplitudes at 1257 Hz (M = 4.55 dB, SD = 8.36), 1587 Hz (M = 11.60 dB, SD = 6.57), 3174 Hz (M = 7.25 dB, SD = 5.99), 5042 Hz (M = 13.60, SD = 6.70) than participants with the other three blood groups in left ears (p < 0.05). In right ears, the blood group O participants showed reduced amplitudes at 1257 Hz (M = 6.55 dB, SD = 8.36), 1587 Hz (M = 13.60 dB, SD = 6.57), 3174 Hz (M = 7.65 dB, SD = 6.43), 5042 Hz (M = 13.65 dB, SD = 6.50) than participants from non-O blood groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Female individuals with blood group O have lower otoacoustic emissions values than individuals with the other three blood groups. We need to further investigate the possible relationships between ABO blood group and cochlear function, including the potential influences of noise damage on cochlear outer hair cells.

Introduction:There are studies that associate blood groups with the development of gastric cancer, establishing a relationship between individuals with blood group A and a predisposition to this neoplasia, however these reports could be biased by the population prevalence of the blood type of the region. The objective of this study is to establish the predicted relationship in an area with a high prevalence of blood type O. Methods: This observational, analytical study was carried out in patients who underwent endoscopic stomach biopsy treated at the SOLCA Cuenca Cancer Institute in the period 2013 -2018; the sampling is non-probability of all possible cases.

The assignment of the ABO blood system to infection is not new and is not exclusive to viral infections. The relationship between COVID-19 and the ABO blood group of infected patients has been investigated. The purpose of this review was to assess whether the association between ABO blood system and SARS-CoV-2 involves tissue ABO isomerism and blood subgroups. A systematic review was carried out with search until July 28, 2020 in PubMed database. Three hundred and eleven manuscripts were obtained, of which 15 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the study. Forty percent of the studies discussed the possibility of ABO tissue antigens influence the transmission or severity of COVID-19. No manuscript mentioned that ABO tissue antigenic isomerism could predispose individuals to SARSCoV-2 infections or severe COVID-19. A manuscript discussed the possibility of steric impediment affect receptorsaturation of the different antibodies A1IgG isotypes in COVID-19 patients. If the letters, correspondences or comments were rejected, deep analyzes of ABO blood system and SARS-CoV-2 infections relationship would have been excluded, and would undermine the scientific discussion and conclusions of the review.
