RESUMO

Ever since the mid-1960's, locking the phases of modes enabled the generation of laser pulses of duration limited only by the uncertainty principle, opening the field of ultrafast science. In contrast to conventional lasers, mode spacing in random lasers is ill-defined because optical feedback comes from scattering centres at random positions, making it hard to use mode locking in transform limited pulse generation. Here the generation of sub-nanosecond transform-limited pulses from a mode-locked random fibre laser is reported. Rayleigh backscattering from decimetre-long sections of telecom fibre serves as laser feedback, providing narrow spectral selectivity to the Fourier limit. The laser is adjustable in pulse duration (0.34-20 ns), repetition rate (0.714-1.22 MHz) and can be temperature tuned. The high spectral-efficiency pulses are applied in distributed temperature sensing with 9.0 cm and 3.3 × 10-3 K resolution, exemplifying how the results can drive advances in the fields of spectroscopy, telecommunications, and sensing.

This data article reports the data for reflection and transmission coefficients of the SH0 and SH1 ultrasonic guided waves modes due to their interaction with tapered wall thinning in aluminium plates. Several thinning depths and edge taper angles were machined, at the total of 35 different samples. Periodic permanent magnet array electromagnet acoustic transducers were used to generate and receive the waves. Both modes were individually generated and separated in the received signal by means of effective post-processing technique. Reflection and transmission coefficients were calculated at both the leading and trailing edges of the thinning region for mode-converted and non-mode converted signals; therefore, eight coefficients were calculated for each generated mode, at the total of sixteen coefficients for each sample. Additional finite-element model was used in order to obtain numerical values for the coefficients. These data were used in order to analyze the interaction of the SH0 and SH1 modes with wall thinning and the capabilities of using them in non-destructive evaluation of corrosion-like defects in the research paper entitled "Interaction of SH guided waves with wall thinning" (Kubrusly et al., 2019).

The propagation speed of ultrasonic waves in pre-stressed media can be evaluated either at the natural or initial frames of reference. In this paper general equations that can be applied to the partial wave technique are presented in order to obtain the dispersion spectra of acoustoelastic Lamb waves in anisotropic plates in either frame of reference. Employing these equations, dispersion curves for the fundamental modes in a pre-stressed transversely isotropic aluminum plate were numerically obtained in both reference frames under longitudinal and transverse loading with the material transverse axis along each of the Cartesian directions, as well as the propagation along a non-principal direction. Results confirm that due to the material natural anisotropy, the speed variation depends not only on the pre-stress direction but also on the material orientation as well as on the polarization of the propagating mode. Similar to bulk waves, the relationship between the speed at the natural and initial frames is a function of the load direction.

By employing real-time monitoring of single-photon avalanche photodiodes we demonstrate how two types of practical eavesdropping strategies, the after-gate and time-shift attacks, may be detected. Both attacks are identified with the detectors operating without any special modifications, making this proposal well suited for real-world applications. The monitoring system is based on accumulating statistics of the times between consecutive detection events, and extracting the afterpulse and overall efficiency of the detectors in real-time using mathematical models fit to the measured data. We are able to directly observe changes in the afterpulse probabilities generated from the after-gate and faint after-gate attacks, as well as different timing signatures in the time-shift attack. We also discuss the applicability of our scheme to other general blinding attacks.

A systematic experimental evaluation of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) -induced polarization-dependent gain (PDG) in forward pumped Raman amplification in dispersion-shifted and in dispersion-compensating fiber was performed. Good agreement was obtained between the measured statistical parameters and the current analytical model for PDG fluctuation statistics. The probability distribution of the PDG was approximately Maxwellian within the range PMD >0.05 ps/km(1/2). The interplay between PMD and gain fluctuations is discussed; random birefringence strongly reduces PDG fluctuations. However, the trade-off between reduction of the power penalties for PDG and increase of the penalties for PMD distortion precludes the use of PMD instead of source depolarization techniques for reduction of PDG.
