Background: There is a lack of specific studies on the management of infections in patients receiving palliative care (PC) in the final stages of life and during the active process of death, related to specific nursing care. There is clinical and social importance as patients in PC represent a vulnerable population, and adequate management of infections is crucial to improve quality of life and the experience of comfort. Objective: This study analyzed how infections are managed in patients undergoing PC at the end-of-life and in the active process of death in two hospital health services. Design: This is an observational, analytical, and retrospective study. Settings: Data collection took place in two hospitals that assist individuals who are hospitalized under PC, located in Brazil, in a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo. Measurements and Results: The sample consisted of 113 medical records, in which the oncological diagnosis was the most prevalent. There was a predominance of infection diagnoses based on the patient's clinical symptoms, the main focus being the pulmonary, in individuals at the end-of-life. The management of infection in the study sample occurred through care and procedures that generate physical discomfort, however aiming at relieving symptoms. Such findings must be documented, as they invite us to reflect on our practical attitudes and what it means to be comfortable for these people, making it possible to incorporate this information into the design of interventions focused on enhancing the experience of comfort.

Salivary glands' neoplasms are hard to diagnose and present a complex etiology. However, several viruses have been detected in these neoplasms, such as HCMV, which can play a role in certain cancers through oncomodulation. The co-infections between HCMV with betaherpesviruses (HHV-6 and HHV-7) and polyomaviruses (JCV and BKV) has been investigated. The aim of the current study is to describe the frequency of HCMV and co-infections in patients presenting neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions, including in the salivary gland. Multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used for betaherpesvirus and polyomavirus quantification purposes after DNA extraction. In total, 50.7% of the 67 analyzed samples were mucocele, 40.3% were adenoma pleomorphic, and 8.9% were mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Overall, 20.9% of samples presented triple-infections with HCMV/HHV-6/HHV-7, whereas 9.0% were co-infections with HCMV/HHV-6 and HCMV/HHV-7. The largest number of co-infections was detected in pleomorphic adenoma cases. All samples tested negative for polyomaviruses, such as BKV and JCV. It was possible to conclude that HCMV can be abundant in salivary gland lesions. A high viral load can be useful to help better understand the etiological role played by viruses in these lesions. A lack of JCV and BKV in the samples analyzed herein does not rule out the involvement of these viruses in one or more salivary gland lesion subtypes.

The treatment of bone cancer involves tumor resection followed by bone reconstruction of the defect caused by the tumor using biomaterials. Additionally, post-surgery protocols cover chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or drug administration, which are employed as adjuvant treatments to prevent tumor recurrence. In this work, we reviewed new strategies for bone cancer treatment based on bioactive glasses as carriers of cancer-targeted and other drugs that are intended for bone regeneration in conjunction with adjuvant treatments. Drugs used in combination with bioactive glasses can be classified into cancer-target, osteoclast-target, and new therapies (such as gene delivery and bioinorganic). Microparticulated, nanoparticulated, or mesoporous bioactive glasses have been used as drug-delivery systems. Additionally, surface modification through functionalization or the production of composites based on polymers and hydrogels has been employed to improve drug-release kinetics. Overall, although different drugs and drug delivery systems have been developed, there is still room for new studies involving kinase inhibitors or antibody-conjugated drugs, as these drugs have been poorly explored in combination with bioactive glasses.

Background: Considering the potential role of miRNAs as biomarkers and their interaction with both nuclear and mitochondrial genes, we investigated the miRNA expression profile in type 1 diabetes (T1DM) patients, including the pathways in which they are involved considering both nuclear and mitochondrial functions. Methods: We analyzed samples of T1DM patients and control individuals (normal glucose tolerance) by high throughput miRNA sequencing (miRNome). Next, five miRNAs - hsa-miR-26b-5p, hsa-let-7i-5p, hsa-miR-143-3p, hsa-miR-501-3p and hsa-miR-100-5p - were validated by RT-qPCR. The identification of target genes was extracted from miRTarBase and mitoXplorer database. We also performed receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and miRNAs that had an AUC > 0.85 were considered potential biomarkers. Results: Overall, 41 miRNAs were differentially expressed in T1DM patients compared to control. Hsa-miR-21-5p had the highest number of predicted target genes and was associated with several pathways, including insulin signaling and apoptosis. 34.1% (14/41) of the differentially expressed miRNAs also targeted mitochondrial genes, and 80.5% (33/41) of them targeted nuclear genes involved in the mitochondrial metabolism. All five validated miRNAs were upregulated in T1DM. Among them, hsa-miR-26b-5p showed AUC>0.85, being suggested as potential biomarker to T1DM. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated 41 DE miRNAs that had a great accuracy in discriminating T1DM and control group. Furthermore, we demonstrate the influence of these miRNAs on numerous metabolic pathways, including mitochondrial metabolism. Hsa-miR-26b-5p and hsa-miR-21-5p were highlighted in our results, possibly acting on nuclear and mitochondrial dysfunction and, subsequently, T1DM dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the evolution of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) since diagnosis and its association with glycemic and lipid control in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the actual criteria to start screening PAD with ankle-brachial index (ABI) in T2DM patients and assess its progression and relationship with glycemic and lipid control since diagnosis. METHODS: We performed a 3-year prospective cohort study with two groups: group 1 (978 individuals with T2DM undergoing drug treatment) and group 2 [221 newly diagnosed drug-naive (< 3 months) patients with T2DM]. PAD diagnosis was by ABI ≤ 0.90, regardless any symptoms. RESULTS: As expected, abnormal ABI prevalence was higher in group 1 vs. Group 2 (87% vs. 60%, p < 0.001). However, abnormal ABI prevalence did not differ between patients over and under 50 years in both groups. Our drug-naive group stabilizes ABI (0.9 ± 0.1 vs 0.9 ± 0.1, p = NS) and improved glycemic and lipid control during follow-up [glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) = 8.9 ± 2.1 vs 8.4 ± 2.3%, p < 0.05; LDL = 132 ± 45 vs 113 ± 38 mg/dL, p < 0.01, respectively]. When compared, patients who evolved with normalization or maintained normal ABI levels at the end [Group A, N = 60 (42%)] with those who decreased ABI to abnormal levels (ABI basal 1.0 ± 0.1 vs final 0.85 ± 0.1, p < 0.001) [Group B, N = 26 (18%)], an improvement in HbA1c (9 ± 2 vs 8 ± 2%, p < 0.05) and a correlation between the final HbA1c with ABI (r = - 0.3, p = 0.01) was found only in the first. In addition, a correlation was found between albuminuria variation and ABI solely in group A (r = - 0.3; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that ABI should be measured at diagnosis in T2DM patients, indicating that current criteria to select patients to screen PAD with ABI must be simplified. An improvement in albuminuria and glycemic and lipid control could be related with ABI normalization in newly diagnosed T2DM drug-naive patients.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) impacts health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Cross-sectional studies suggest that low levels of vitamin D (VD) may impair HRQoL, however, the effect of VD supplementation on quality of life in T1DM patients has not yet been clarified. Our study evaluated the effects of high-dose VD supplementation on HRQoL in T1DM. METHODS: We performed a prospective study with 64 patients receiving cholecalciferol (4000 IU/day for patients with 25-OH-vitamin D [25(OH)D] between 30 and 60 ng/mL, and 10,000 IU/day for those with 25(OH)D below 30 ng/mL) for 12 weeks, as part of a research protocol. HRQoL was assessed with EuroQol instruments (EQ-5D and EQ-VAS). RESULTS: There was an improvement in global EQ-5D index, and analysing specifically the EQ-5D domains, we observed an improvement in mobility (1.3 ± 0.6 versus 1.1 ± 0.3, p < 0.01). Evaluating possible outcome influencing variables, we detected a reduction in albuminuria at the end of the trial, without changes in BMI, lipids, blood pressure, glycemic control and insulin doses. We found correlations between final albuminuria and the dimensions: mobility (r = 0.6; p < 0.01), personal care (r = 0.7; p < 0.01), pain and discomfort (r = 0.6; p < 0.01) and habitual activities (r = 0.6; p < 0.01), suggesting an association between albuminuria reduction and the impact of VD supplementation on HRQoL. CONCLUSION: Our data showed that high doses of cholecalciferol supplementation can improve HRQoL in patients with T1DM, and the reduction of albuminuria seems to be an important factor in this context. BACKGROUND: Some authors evaluated the effect of VD on hyperglycemia in T1DM, but the results remain controversial. This study aims to analyze the effects of high-dose VD supplementation on T1DM patients' glycemic levels, maintaining stable doses of insulin. METHODS: Prospective, 12-week clinical trial including 67 T1DM patients, supplemented with high doses of cholecalciferol according to participants' VD value. Patients with VD levels below 30 ng/mL received 10,000 IU/day; those with levels between 30-60 ng/mL received 4,000 IU/day. Patients who had not achieved 25(OH)D levels > 30 ng/ml or presented insulin dose variation during the study were not analyzed. RESULTS: Only 46 out of 67 patients accomplished the criteria at the end of the study. There was no general improvement in the glycemic control evaluated by HbA1c (9.4 ± 2.4 vs 9.4 ± 2.6, p=NS) after VD supplementation. However, a post-hoc analysis, based on HbA1c variation, identified patients who had HbA1c reduced at least 0.6% (group 1, N = 13 (28%)). In addition, a correlation between 25(OH)D levels with HbA1c and total insulin dose at the end of the study was observed (r = -0.3, p<0.05; r=-0.4, p<0.05, respectively), and a regression model demonstrated that 25(OH)D was independent of BMI, duration of T1DM and final total insulin dose, being capable of determining 9.2% of HbA1c final levels (Unstandardized B coefficient = -0.033 (CI 95%: -0.064 to -0.002), r2 = 0.1, p <0.05). CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that VD is not widely recommended for glycemic control. Nevertheless, specific patients might benefit from this approach.

BACKGROUND: The knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease characterized by degradation of articular cartilage that leads to chronic inflammation. Exercise programs and photobiomodulation (PBM) are capable of modulating the inflammatory process of minimizing functional disability related to knee OA. However, their association on the concentration of biomarkers related to OA development has not been studied yet. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of PBM (via cluster) with a physical exercise program in functional capacity, serum inflammatory and cartilage degradation biomarkers in patients with knee OA. METHODS: Forty-two patients were randomly allocated in 3 groups: ESP: exercise + sham PBM; EAP: exercise + PBM and CG: control group. Six patients were excluded before finished the experimental period. The analyzed outcomes in baseline and 8-week were: the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) and the evaluation of serum biomarkers concentration (IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 e TNF-α, and CTX-II). RESULTS: An increase in the functional capacity was observed in the WOMAC total score for both treated groups (p < 0.001) and ESP presents a lower value compared to CG (p < 0.05) the 8-week post-treatment. In addition, there was a significant increase in IL-10 concentration of EAP (p < 0.05) and higher value compared to CG (p < 0.001) the 8-week post-treatment. Moreover, an increase in IL-1ß concentration was observed for CG (p < 0.05). No other difference was observed comparing the other groups. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that the physical exercise therapy could be a strategy for increasing functional capacity and in association with PBM for increasing IL-10 levels in OA knee individuals. Background: The effect of glycemic control on diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is well known. Recent evidence has suggested that Vitamin D (VD) may have a nephroprotective effect in diabetes, but the relationship between VD, glycemic control, and albuminuria has yet to be clarified. Objective: Evaluate the relationship between 25-hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH)D], HbA1c, and albuminuria in Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Patients and Methods: Cross-sectional study with 1576 individuals with DM who had 25(OH)D, HbA1c, and albuminuria levels measured. Patients with abnormal creatinine levels were excluded, in order to avoid interference on VD levels by impaired kidney function. Results: Patients with HbA1c ≥7% had lower 25(OH)D when compared to patients with HbA1c <7% (29.7 ± 10.2 vs 28.1 ± 9.9 ng/ml, p = 0.003) and 25(OH)D levels seems to predict 1.5% of HbA1c behavior. The 25(OH)D concentrations in patients with normoalbuminuria were higher than the levels observed in those with micro or macroalbuminuria (29.8 ± 9.0 vs 26.8 ± 8.6 and 25.1 ± 7.6, respectively, p = 0.001), patients who had 25(OH)D <20 ng/ml and 25(OH)D <30 ng/ml were at a higher risk of presenting albuminuria [OR = 2.8 (95% CI = 1.6 - 4.9), p<0.001, and OR = 2.1 (95% CI = 1.3 - 4.6), p<0.001, respectively]. In our regression model, albuminuria was influenced by HbA1c (r² = 0.076, p<0.00001) and 25(OH)D (r² = 0.018, p = 0.002) independently. Conclusion: Our study found an association between vitamin D levels, HbA1c and DKD. Additionally, our data suggest that the association between urinary albumin excretion and vitamin D levels is independent of glycemic control in patients with diabetes. Even though our patients presented normal creatinine levels, it is necessary further prospective studies to confirm if this association precedes or not the loss of renal function.

RESUMO

Traditional cancer treatments, such as surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, are still the most effective clinical practice options. However, these treatments may display moderate to severe side effects caused by their low temporal or spatial resolution. In this sense, photonic nanomedicine therapies have been arising as an alternative to traditional cancer treatments since they display more control of temporal and spatial resolution, thereby yielding fewer side effects. In this work, we reviewed the challenge of current cancer treatments, using the PubMed and Web of Science database, focusing on the advances of three prominent therapies approached by photonic nanomedicine: (i) photothermal therapy; (ii) photodynamic therapy; (iii) photoresponsive drug delivery systems. These photonic nanomedicines act on the cancer cells through different mechanisms, such as hyperthermic effect and delivery of chemotherapeutics and species that cause oxidative stress. Furthermore, we covered the recent advances in materials science applied in photonic nanomedicine, highlighting the main classes of materials used in each therapy, their applications in the context of cancer treatment, as well as their advantages, limitations, and future perspectives. Finally, although some photonic nanomedicines are undergoing clinical trials, their effectiveness in cancer treatment have already been highlighted by pre-clinical studies.

The combination of Fe3O4@Ag superparamagnetic hybrid nanoparticles and nitric oxide (NO) represents an innovative strategy for a localized NO delivery with a simultaneous antibacterial and antitumoral actions. Here, we report the design of Fe3O4@Ag hybrid nanoparticles, coated with a modified and nitrosated chitosan polymer, able to release NO in a biological medium. After their synthesis, physicochemical characterization confirmed the obtention of small NO-functionalized superparamagnetic Fe3O4@Ag NPs. Antibacterial assays demonstrated enhanced effects compared to control. Bacteriostatic effect against Gram-positive strains and bactericidal effect against E. coli were demonstrated. Moreover, NO-functionalized Fe3O4@Ag NPs demonstrated improved ability to reduce cancer cells viability and less cytotoxicity against non-tumoral cells compared to Fe3O4@Ag NPs. These effects were associated to the ability of these NPs act simultaneous as cytotoxic (necrosis inductors) and cytostatic compounds inducing S-phase cell cycle arrest. NPs also demonstrated low hemolysis ratio (<10%) at ideal work range, evidencing their potential for biomedical applications. Targeted and hemocompatible nitric oxide-releasing multi-functional hybrid nanoparticles for antitumor and antimicrobial applications.

BACKGROUND: The prognostic value of myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in patients with known coronary artery disease (CAD) and high exercise capacity is still unknown. We sought to determine the MPI additional prognostic value over electrocardiography (ECG) stress testing alone in patients with known CAD who achieved ≥ 10 metabolic equivalents (METs). METHODS AND RESULTS: We evaluated 926 patients with known CAD referred for MPI with exercise stress. Patients were followed for a mean of 32.4 ± 9.7 months for the occurrence of all-cause death or nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI). Those achieving ≥ 10 METs were younger, predominantly male, and had lower prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. Patients reaching ≥ 10 METs had a lower annualized rate of hard events compared to their counterparts achieving < 10 METs (1.13%/year vs 3.95%/year, P < .001). Patients who achieved ≥ 10 METs with abnormal scans had a higher rate of hard events compared to those with normal scans (3.37%/year vs 0.57%/year, P = .023). Cardiac workload < 10 METs and an abnormal MPI scan were independent predictors of hard events. CONCLUSIONS: MPI is able to stratify patients with known CAD achieving ≥ 10 METs for the occurrence of all-cause death and nonfatal MI, with incremental prognostic value over ECG stress test alone.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested using gamma cameras with cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) detectors to quantify myocardial blood flow (MBF) and flow reserve (MFR). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of MFR quantification using a CZT camera compared to coronary angiography. METHODS: Forty-one participants referred for coronary angiography underwent a rest/stress one-day myocardial perfusion imaging protocol using a CZT gamma camera. Rest and stress dynamic phases were followed by acquisition of traditional perfusion images and time-activity curves were generated. Angiographic and perfusion results were compared to MFR. RESULTS: Patients with abnormal perfusion presented reduced MFR (2.01 [1.48-2.77] vs. 2.94 [2.38-3.64], P = 0.002), and reduced stress MBF. Patients with high-risk CAD had lower global MFR compared to patients without obstructive disease (1.99 [1.22-2.84] vs. 2.89 [2.22-3.58], P = 0.026). Obstructed vessels showed lower regional MFR when compared to non-obstructed (1.81 [1.19-2.67] vs. 2.75 [2.13-3.42], P < 0.001). A regional MFR of 2.2 provided a sensitivity of 63.2% and specificity of 74.1% to identify an obstructive lesion in the corresponding artery. CONCLUSION: In patients undergoing invasive coronary angiography for the evaluation of CAD, quantifying MBF and MFR in a CZT gamma camera is feasible and reflects underlying disease. In these patients, reduced regional MFR suggests the presence of obstructive lesion(s).

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D (VD) deficiency has been related to several endocrine metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. The effect of VD supplementation on blood pressure (BP) in patients with diabetes is controversial. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate high-dose vitamin D supplementation effects on blood pressure of normotensive patients with diabetes mellitus 1 (DM1) patients by 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). METHODS: We performed a clinical trial including 35 DM1 normotensive patients, who received doses of 4,000 or 10,000 IU/day of cholecalciferol for 12 weeks according to previous VD levels. They underwent 24-hour ABPM, along with glycated hemoglobin, creatine, lipids profile and PCRus dosage before and after VD supplementation. RESULTS: We found an expressive reduction of systolic and diastolic morning blood pressures (117±14 vs 112±14, p<0,05; 74±9 vs 70±10 mmHg, p<0,05, respectively) with no changes in other pressoric markers. Besides, we noticed a relationship between levels of VD after supplementation and diastolic morning blood pressure (r= -0,4; p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Our study suggests an association between supplementation of high doses of vitamin D and the reduction of morning blood pressure in normotensive DM1 patients.

OBJECTIVES: Although causal associations between oral leukoplakia (OL), oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) have been speculated upon in several reports, conclusive evidence has not been presented. This study investigates whether the number of cases of HR-HPV in OL has increased over time and whether the prevalence of HR-HPV-positive OL differs in various parts of the world. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 432 patients with OL from Sweden, Brazil and Romania were analysed. Patients were divided into historical (1992-2002) and contemporary (2011-2017) cohorts from the respective countries. Seventeen patients with OL developed oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). A real-time PCR assay, targeting HPV sub-types 6,11,16,18,31,33,35,39,45,52,56,58 and 59, was performed to detect HR-HPV in patients with OL. RESULTS: In the Swedish and Romanian cohorts, none of the investigated HPV sub-types were detected. In the Brazilian cohorts, five patients with OL (3%) were positive for HR-HPV, including four patients from the contemporary cohort (HPV 16, 31, 33) and one from the historical cohort (HPV 11). All the cases of OL that transformed into OSCC were HR-HPV-negative, as were the corresponding tumours. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the prevalence of HR-HPV in OL is low in all the tested countries, and the incidence has not changed over time. HR-HPV in OL does not seem to be a driver of oncogenesis.

Bioactive glasses containing rare earth elements have been proposed as promising candidates for applications in brachytherapy of bone cancer. However, their safety relies on a proper dissolution to avoid radioactive materials in the human body, and desirable bioactive properties to regenerate the bone defect caused by the tumor. In this work, we proposed a new series of sol-gel-derived bioactive glasses containing holmium oxide, based on the system (100-x)(58SiO2-33CaO-9P2O5)-xHo2O3 (x = 1.25, 2.5 and 5 wt%). The glasses were characterized regarding their dissolution behavior, bioactivity, and cytotoxicity with pre-osteoblastic cells. Also, in the dissolution experiments, the Arrhenius and Eyring equations were used to obtain some thermodynamic properties of glass dissolution. The results evidenced that the addition of holmium ions in the glass structure decreased the energy barrier of hydrolysis reactions, which favors glass dissolution in an early-stage. However, in the long-term, the strength of Si-O-Ho bonds may be the cause of more stable dissolution. Besides, glasses containing holmium were as bioactive as the 58S bioactive glasses, a highly bioactive composition. Cytotoxicity results showed that all glasses were not cytotoxic, and the composition containing 5 wt.% of Ho2O3 enhanced cell viability. Finally, these results suggest that these glasses are suitable materials for brachytherapy applications due to their proper dissolution behavior, high bioactivity, and high cell viability.

Background: Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is associated with diabetes mellitus, increasing morbidity and mortality. Some cross-sectional studies associated CAN with low 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of high-dose vitamin D (VD) supplementation on CAN in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) patients. Methods: We performed a prospective study with 23 patients diagnosed with T1DM and CAN. Subjects with VD levels <30 ng/ml received 10,000 IU/day; the ones with VD levels between 30-60 ng/ml were given 4,000 IU/day for 12 weeks. Results: There was an improvement in CAN parameters related to resting heart rate variability, such as time domain parameters [Maximum RR interval (0.77 ± 0.11 vs 0.94 ± 0.51 s, p <0.05), Mean length of regular RR intervals (0.71 ± 0.10 vs 0.76 ± 0.09 s, p <0.05) and Standard deviation of all NN intervals (0.02 ± 0.01 vs 0.03 ± 0.02 s; p <0.01)] and frequency domain parameters [Low Frequency (1.9 ± 0.5 vs 2.5 ± 0.9 s, p < 0.001), Total Power (2.5 ± 0.4 vs 2.8 ± 0.6 s, p <0.05)]. In addition, there was a correlation between absolute VD level variation and posttreatment High Frequency (%), as well as among percent variation in VD level and end-of-study Low Frequency/High Frequency ratio (r=0.6, p<0.01; r= -0.5, p<0.05, respectively). Conclusion: Our pilot study is the first to suggest a strong association between high-dose vitamin D supplementation and improved cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy in T1DM patients. It occurred without any variation in HbA1C, blood pressure levels, lipids, and insulin dose. Clinical Trial Registration: http://www.isrctn.com/ISRCTN32601947, identifier ISRCTN32601947.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to assess the oral shedding and viremia of human herpesviruses in renal transplant recipients. METHODS: This is a cohort study in which the participants were examined in three different periods: the first within 24 hours before renal transplantation and the second and third ones 15-20 and 45-60 days after the transplantation. Mouthwash and blood samples were collected in each period and then submitted to screening for the presence of eight types of human herpesviruses by using multiplex PCR. RESULTS: HSV-1 and EBV were more frequent in the saliva after renal transplantation, 15- to 20-day period after the transplant. EBV was found in the saliva of 26 (35.6%) patients before renal transplantation and in 56.2% and 46.6% of them, in the 15- to 20-day and 45- to 60-day periods after the transplant, respectively. High detection rates (75.3%-78.1%) were found for HHV-7 despite the lack of significant variations between the study periods. There was no concordance between herpesviruses oral shedding and viremia. CONCLUSION: We concluded that the pattern of excretion of HSV-1 and EBV in saliva is changed immediately after renal transplantation, increasing in the 15- to 20-day period after the transplant surgery. No concordance between herpesviruses oral shedding and viremia was observed.
