RESUMO
A biodegradable polymer packaging system for 'Benitaka' table grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) was developed to inhibit the development of gray mold during refrigerated storage. The system consisted of packages and sachets containing Na2S2O5 to release sulfur dioxide (SO2), both produced with biodegradable films of starch, glycerol, and poly (adipate co-butylene terephthalate) (PBAT) produced via blown extrusion. The films were characterized in terms of thickness, density, mass loss in water, water vapor permeability, sorption isotherms, and mechanical properties. The table grapes were packed with biodegradable plastic bags containing SO2-releasing sachets inside. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four repetitions and five treatments: (a) control, without sachet containing Na2S2O5 and SiO2; (b) 2 g of Na2S2O5 + 2 g of SiO2; (c) 4 g of Na2S2O5 + 1 g of SiO2; (d) 4 g of Na2S2O5 + 2 g of SiO2; and (e) 4 g of Na2S2O5 + 4 g of SiO2. The bunches were stored in a refrigerated chamber at 1 ± 1 °C and relative humidity above 90%. The treatments were evaluated 30 and 45 days after the beginning of refrigerated storage and 3 days at room temperature. The grapes were evaluated based on the incidence of gray mold, mass loss, stem browning, shattered berries, and berry bleaching. The data were subjected to the analysis of variance, and the means were compared using Tukey's test at 5%. The biodegradable films had good processability during the production via blown extrusion, with good physical properties to be used in the packaging of grapes and the production of SO2-releasing sachets. The biodegradable polymer packaging system (biodegradable plastic bags + SO2-releasing sachets) inhibited the development of gray mold on 'Benitaka' table grapes for 45 days at 1 °C, preserving their quality, with low mass loss, few shattered berries, and rachis freshness.

BACKGROUND: Melioidosis is a serious disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei which affects humans and animals. It results in a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, mainly in the respiratory tract, progressing to septic shock and death. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present a series of seven patients (median age: 41 years) with confirmed melioidosis, treated at a public hospital in Piauí State, Brazil between 2019 and 2021. The most common clinical presentations were fever, cough, pneumonia, and abdominal pain. The mean duration of antibacterial therapy with 1 g of meropenem was 28.6 ± 1.1 days. Six patients recovered and one died. The mean hospitalization time was 51.0 ± 39.2 days. CONCLUSIONS: Melioidosis is an emerging infectious disease in Brazil. Health professionals in endemic areas need to be aware of the clinical presentation and appropriate clinical management of the disease because early diagnosis and early initiation of antibiotic therapy can be life-saving.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop a piperacillin population PK model for critically ill Brazil-ian patients and describe interethnic variation using an external validation. Methods: Plasma samples were obtained from 24 ICU patients during the fifth day of piperacillin treatment and assayed by HPLC-UV. Population pharmacokinetic modelling was conducted using Pmetrics. Empiric dose of 4 g IV 6- and 8-hourly were simulated for 50 and 100% fT > MIC and the probabil-ity of target attainment (PTA) and the fractional target attainment (FTA) determined. Results: A two-compartment model was designed to describe the pharmacokinetics of critically ill Brazillian patients. Clearance and volume of distribution were (mean ± SD) 3.33 ± 1.24 L h−1 and 10.69 ± 4.50 L, respectively. Creatinine clearance was positively correlated with piperacillin clearance and a high creatinine clearance was associated with lower values of PTA and FTA. An external vali-dation was performed using data from two different ethnic ICU populations (n = 30), resulting in acceptable bias and precision. Conclusion: The primary pharmacokinetic parameters obtained from critically ill Brazilian patients were similar to those observed in studies performed in critically ill patients of other ethnicities. Based on our results, the use of dose adjustment based on creati-nine clearance is required in Brazilian patients.
RESUMO
PURPOSE: Delineate retrospectively and prospectively the incidence and characteristics of transient ST-segment elevation during transseptal puncture. METHODS: The study retrospectively evaluated 307 patients from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2017, and prospectively evaluated 231 patients from January 1, 2018, to July 31, 2019. RESULTS: The presence of ST-segment elevation was significantly higher in the prospective sample than in the retrospective sample (5.2% vs. 1.3%, p < 0.05). Between the two groups, there was no significant difference in age, sex, comorbidities, left atrial volume index, and the etiology of atrial fibrillation among patients with ST-segment alteration. In all patients, the ST-segment elevation was observed in the inferior wall derivations, except for one patient with ST elevation in lead I, AVL, V1-V4 during the septal puncture, associated with sinus bradycardia and reversed hypotension with intravenous fluids. Comparative analysis of the systolic and diastolic arterial pressure and the minimum heart rate during the phenomenon demonstrated more severity in the retrospectively evaluated population than in the prospective population. There was a significant association between the occurrence of ST-segment elevation > 2 mm and the presence of symptoms. In these patients, coronary angiography showed no alterations. Atropine was administered to one patient who presented with junctional bradycardia after the puncture. This medication reversed the situation. CONCLUSION: ST-segment elevation is a short-term phenomenon that can occur during transseptal catheterization without clinically evident symptoms. The catheter ablation procedure can be safely concluded despite the occurrence of the phenomenon.

This data article comprises experimental data to investigate the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the Orion beam structure, which consists of two duraluminum beams assembled by bolted joints. To retain contact on a small area between both beams, this new lap-joint configuration proposes contact patches at each bolt connection. The Orion beam suggests an assembly configuration that associates bolts dedicated to 'static' functions and to those to perform 'damping' functions. This ensures a significant increase in the structural damping without degrading the structural stiffness. Experiments have been performed on the laboratory ple Vibration and Acoustic, located at FEMTO-ST Institute, CNRS/UFC/ENSMM/UTBM, Department of Applied Mechanics, 24 chemin de lEpitaphe, 25000 Besanon, France. This data aim to provide the geometrical step and all the experimental measurements performed on our lap-joint for several excitation amplitudes and tightening torques, as far as possible and with the degree of uncertainties of the measurements. By doing so, we intend to provide experimental data, as precise and reliable as possible, which are required to progress on the numerical modelling of the dry friction damping in assembly structures. This Data in Brief article is an additional research item alongside the following paper published in the Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing journal: R. O. Teloli, P. Butaud, G. Chevallier and S. da Silva, Good practices for designing and experimental testing of dynamically excited jointed structures: the Orion beam.
RESUMO
When it comes to the sensory analysis of specialty coffees, it is necessary to discuss the protocol of tests of the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) and the formation of Q-Graders as reliable parameters in the sensory analysis. However, the training of these Q-Graders and the use of the SCA protocol has generated discussions in the scientific community and demonstrated the importance of talking about the level of professional precision as well as the use of the protocol. This study sought to understand the relation of accuracy and efficiency of the Q-Graders and protocol in the sensory analysis of coffees. Three experiments were carried out to evaluate and test the hypotheses regarding the level of precision in relation to the shift, the number of samples and the judgment abilities of Q-Graders due to the quality of the specialty coffee and nonspecialty coffee. These three experiments were performed by seven Q-Graders in an isolated environment during three consecutive days with 137 specialty coffee samples and 7 nonspecialty coffee samples as defined by the SCA. The results indicate that the Q-Graders present high precision when evaluating excellent and outstanding coffees, as defined by the SCA. In addition, the effect of the shift did not exert fatigue on the Q-Graders. However, evaluation errors were made by the Q-Graders on very good coffee (77.00-80.00 points), which are considered as nonspecialty by the SCA, thus allowing a more in-depth discussion on what would be the boundary between a specialty and nonspecialty coffee. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The article deals with the sensory evaluation process of coffees, and it has great importance to teaching and research institutions in Brazil, the largest producer, largest exporter and the country with the highest concentration of coffee scholars in the world. The article focuses on a new approach and a new way of looking at the sensory evaluation process of coffees, using the methodology of the Specialty Coffee Association to analyze the accuracy and efficiency of the Q-Graders.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) may lead to gastrointestinal motility disorders. Rodent models of DM indicate the presence of morpho-functional abnormalities of the enteric nervous system. Here, we evaluated whether experimental DM can cause changes in the excitatory cholinergic fibers, neuronal density, and voltage-gated sodium channel (Nav) expression in the myenteric plexus of the ileum. After streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia in female rats progressed for eight weeks, triple immunofluorescence labeling experiments revealed that the neuronal density in DM rats was significantly lower than that in control. On average, the density of total neurons reduced by 52.2% (pâ¯=â¯0.0001), cholinergic neurons by 50.0% (pâ¯=â¯0.0068), and nitrergic neurons by 54.8% (pâ¯=â¯0.0042). The number of neurons per ganglionic area was also significantly reduced (to 28.2% of total neurons, pâ¯=â¯0.0002; 27.7% of cholinergic neurons, pâ¯=â¯0.0002, and 32.1% of nitrergic neurons, pâ¯=â¯0.0016). Furthermore, the density of the cholinergic fibers at the surface of the longitudinal muscle was significantly reduced (DM: 24⯱â¯3%; pâ¯=â¯0.003, control: 41⯱â¯2%); however, western-blot analysis did not indicate a reduction in the expression of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) in the DM group. The Nav1.6 isoform was detected in different myenteric neurons of the ileum. RT-qPCR data did not suggest an alteration of transcripts for ChAT, neuronal nitric oxide synthase, Nav1.3, Nav1.6, or Nav1.7. Our data support the view that chronic DM leads to a reduction of excitatory cholinergic fibers and neuronal density. However, changes in sodium channel expression pattern, which could cause neuronal dysfunction, were not detected.

Weather phenomena El Niño and La Niña are observed by meteorological variables, which allows you to track climate change and its possible effects in certain regions. The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior of rainfall, temperature and evapotranspiration in the Amazon river basin (Latitudes 5° N to 20° S and Longitudes 50° W to 80° W), comparing them with the occurrence of El Niño and La Niña phenomena, from January 2000 to December 2016. The values referring to the meteorological variables were obtained from the TRMM and MODIS orbital sensors. After data pre-processing, the data were separated into monthly and annual scales and per period according to the presence or absence of El Niño and La Niña phenomena. Based on the results obtained, it was observed that the studied variables were affected by modification of both phenomena. The modifications are more noticeable in the distinction between the more and less rainy periods. Among the variables studied, the evapotranspiration was severely affected in the rainiest months, the La Niña phenomenon, and the least rainy months, El Niño. Thus, it was possible to conclude that, in general, the presence of La Niña increased precipitation values in comparison to the Neutral period, but the inverse occurs in the presence of El Niño. The methodology applied in the present study was adequate for the analysis of the modifications of the meteorological variables coming from the El Niño and La Niña phenomena, being able to be adapted to other variables and regions.
RESUMO
Mirror neurons fire action potentials both when the agent performs a certain behavior and watches someone performing a similar action. Here, we present an original mirror neuron model based on the spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) between two morpho-electrical models of neocortical pyramidal neurons. Both neurons fired spontaneously with basal firing rate that follows a Poisson distribution, and the STDP between them was modeled by the triplet algorithm. Our simulation results demonstrated that STDP is sufficient for the rise of mirror neuron function between the pairs of neocortical neurons. This is a proof of concept that pairs of neocortical neurons associating sensory inputs to motor outputs could operate like mirror neurons. In addition, we used the mirror neuron model to investigate whether channelopathies associated with autism spectrum disorder could impair the modeled mirror function. Our simulation results showed that impaired hyperpolarization-activated cationic currents (Ih) affected the mirror function between the pairs of neocortical neurons coupled by STDP.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to check which initial dose of vancomycin is needed to achieve the therapeutic target that is currently used in pediatrics. METHODS: The search was conducted in the following data sources: Pubmed (1980-2017), the Cochrane Library, and Embase (1986-2017) and the references of the published studies; searches were performed using the key terms: child, children, pediatrics, infants and adolescents, vancomycin, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. The data extracted from the studies were analyzed and grouped using RevMan V 5.2 software. The confidence interval (CI) 95% and the odds ratio (OR) were calculated considering the Mantel-Haenszel random effect. RESULTS: From the 704 studies identified, 40 revealed eligibility for this review and only 20 presented enough data to be included in the statistical analysis. The articles found in this review were published between 1980 and 2017. The vancomycin doses varied between 40 mg/kg/day to 120 mg/kg/day. The statistical tests demonstrated significant clinical heterogeneity of I2 (84%). CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analysis study revealed in the majority of studies that doses lower than 60 mg/kg/day were not enough to achieve desirable vancomycin plasma concentrations "area under the curve in 24 h/minimum inhibitory concentration >400 (AUC0-24/MIC>400) or trough 10-20 mg/L" to control bacterial infections in pediatrics.

For countries dependent on hydroelectricity, water scarcity poses a real risk. Hydroelectric plants are among the most vulnerable enterprises to climate change. Investing in the conservation of the hydrographic basin is a solution found by the hydropower sector. Given the importance of the Itaipu plant to the energy matrix of Brazil and Paraguay, the aim of this study is to review the current distribution of royalties from Itaipu, using the hydrographic basin as a of criterion of analysis. Approximately 98.73% of the Itaipu basin is in Brazil. The flow contributes 99% of the total electricity generated there, while the drop height of the water contributes only 1%. Under the current policy, royalties are shared equally between Brazil and Paraguay. In the proposed approach, each country would receive a percentage for their participation in the drop height and water flow in the output of the turbines, which are intrinsic factors for electricity generation. Thus, Brazil would receive 98.35% of the royalties and Paraguay, 1.65%. The inclusion of the hydrographic basin as a criterion for the distribution of royalties will promote more efficient water resource management, since the payment will be distributed throughout the basin of the plant. The methodology can be applied to hydroelectric projects worldwide.

The Atlantic Forest biome is recognized for its biodiversity and is one of the most threatened biomes on the planet, with forest fragmentation increasing due to uncontrolled land use, land occupation, and population growth. The most serious aspect of the forest fragmentation process is the edge effect and the loss of biodiversity. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the dynamics of forest fragmentation and select potential forest fragments with a higher degree of conservation for seed harvesting in the Itapemirim river basin, Espírito Santo State, Brazil. Image classification techniques, forest landscape ecology, and multi-criteria analysis were used to evaluate the evolution of forest fragmentation to develop the landscape metric indexes, and to select potential forest fragments for seed harvesting for the years 1985 and 2013. According to the results, there was a reduction of 2.55% of the occupancy of the fragments in the basin between the years 1985 and 2013. For the years 1985 and 2013, forest fragment units 2 and 3 were spatialized with a high potential for seed harvesting, representing 6.99% and 16.01% of the total fragments, respectively. The methodology used in this study has the potential to be used to support decisions for the selection of potential fragments for seed harvesting because selecting fragments in different environments by their spatial attributes provides a greater degree of conservation, contributing to the protection and conscious management of the forests. The proposed methodology can be adapted to other areas and different biomes of the world.

The synthetic estrogen 17α-ethinylestradiol, the principal component of oral contraceptives, has been identified as one of the main compounds accounting for adverse effects on the endocrine system in various species. This study aimed to analyze the state-of-the-art in legislation and guidelines for the control of this synthetic estrogen in water bodies in Europe and the United States and to draw a parallel with the Brazilian reality. Countries have generally attempted to expand the regulation and monitoring of certain emerging micropollutants not previously covered by legislation. Europe is more advanced in terms of water quality, while in the United States this estrogen is only regulated in water for human consumption. Brazil still lacks legal provisions or standards for this estrogen, which can be explained by the relatively limited maturity of the country's system for controlling water pollutants.

BACKGROUND: Individuals classified as morbidly obese require effective treatments to promote weight reduction. Due to the inefficacy of conservative treatments and current medications, bariatric surgery (gastric bypass) has been indicated for this group of individuals. AIM: To identify subgroups of obese patients in order to find patterns that hinder weight loss and recovery after the operation. METHOD: Variables from the medical records of 50 patients were analyzed at two different times: before bariatric surgery and six months after the surgery, utilizing statistical cluster analysis. RESULTS: The analysis led to dividing the patients into two groups. The body mass index - BMI variable did not influence the classification of the patients. The group in worse metabolic conditions was not necessarily composed of heavier subjects, but the cluster analysis grouped the patients according to four indicators of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic alterations and blood pressure were shown to have a clear correlation to obesity, relation to BMI was not confirmed by this study. CONCLUSIONS: Taking measures to manage metabolic syndrome and not focusing solely on weight loss could improve recovery after bariatric surgery, considering that the BMI was reduced in all patients and was not the distinguishing factor for the postoperative period.

Because of the use in human feeding, animal, and high productive potential, corn is considered to be one of the most important cultivated and commercialized cereals in the world. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of different potassium doses and nitrogen in the activity of the enzyme nitrate reductase in the corn culture in a greenhouse environment. Five dosages of nitrogen (0; 50; 100; 150 and 200kg ha-1) and five potassium dosages (0; 40; 80; 120 and 160kg ha-1) were used. The activity of the nitrate reductase was esteemed, in vivo after the plants reached four leaves totally unfolded. The method that was used is based on the principle of the amount of nitrite liberated by fragments of alive tissue in a buffer in the presence of a permanent agent and substrate, reflects the potential in situ activity of the enzyme nitrate reductase. The activity of the enzyme nitrate reductase suffered significant influence of the f nitrogen and potassium dosage interaction, where the interaction N=100kg ha-1 and K=40kg ha-1 provided the best medium of the experiment. From this dosage on, the increase of nitrogen and potassium supplement caused a reduction of the enzymatic activity.

The aim of this paper was to study accumulation of cadmium (Cd) by Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermenting sugar-cane must, with sub-toxic additions of cadmium. Fermentation conditions were the same as those used in industrial production of alcohol, using non-sterilized must at pH 4.5 containing 12% total reducing sugar (w/w). Using cadmium acetate, four levels of contamination were applied, as follows: 0.5; 1.0; 2.0 and 5.0 mg Cd kg-1 must. The must was inoculated with baker's yeast (10% w/w). After 4 hours of fermentation, the wine was centrifuged and alcohol content and percent of yeast in the wine were determined. The separated yeast was analyzed for wet weight, solid and crude protein contents. Cadmium content was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Accumulation of cadmium by the yeast was shown at all levels of contamination.
