RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify alcohol consumption in young people between 18 and 24 years of age in the province of Córdoba who participated in the National Survey of Risk Factors, according to sociodemographic characteristics. METHOD: A quantitative, analytic and cross-sectional study was undertaken in a sample of 240 young people. The alcohol consumption and sociodemographic characteristics were analyzed using bivariate analysis, risk ratio and confidence intervals. RESULTS: The lifetime prevalence of alcohol consumption corresponded to 79.17%, the one-year prevalence to 72.91% and the one-month prevalence to 57.08%, while episodic abuse and regular hazardous consumption corresponded to 25.55% and 24.19%. Consumption levels in the last month were higher among males (p=0.0028), single people (p=0.0001), with a secondary education degree (p=0.0306). CONCLUSION: In the province of Córdoba, drugs use, including alcohol, has not been an area of research interest in recent years, although alcohol abuse is associated with other risk factors, like accidents and violence, and is a factor of comorbidity and early mortality. Therefore, alcohol consumption in young people represents an area of concern and, once characterized, preventive actions should be adopted.

RESUMO

This study characterizes hospitalizations of children and adolescents with cancer, from 1998 to 2008, to describe the clientele in follow-up in the Regional Health Area of Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. Morbidity was surveyed in Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil, using hospitalization data from the Unified Health System. The studied variables included: origin, residence, year when care was provided, deaths, age and gender of patients diagnosed with child and adolescent cancer according to the International Classification of Disease 10th edition, Chapter II. The results indicated 7,234 hospitalizations of individuals younger than 18 years old diagnosed with neoplasm, 95% of which were from Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil, and the remainder from cities located in all five of the Brazilian regions. Identifying the characteristics of patients contributes to the identification of information to broaden the sensitization of health professionals concerning the need for secondary preventive actions, such as early diagnosis.

RESUMO

This was a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study. The participant population consisted of 69 students who were attending the fifth year of the Nursing Degree course. A self-administered questionnaire was applied, which was previously validated with a sample of nursing students that were attending other years of the course. The instrument was divided into five domains: general, sociodemographic, economic, personal, familiar and sociocultural information. The study evidence, that the phenomenon of drugs is multifactorial, is associated with sociodemographic, economic, personal, familiar and sociocultural characteristics. The students were predominantly female, of the middle-economic class, with good academic performance, but had unhealthy life styles. Concerning drug consumption, 44.9% had consumed alcoholic beverages and consumed at the time of the study, another smaller percentage smoked tobacco and 1.4% smoked marijuana; in addition, a clear knowledge of risk behaviors and of the consequences to which they are exposed did not exist within this group.

RESUMO

This descriptive study aimed to describe Tuberculosis-related mortality in Brazil between 1980 and 2001, through time series analysis of data from the DATASUS related to cases in which Tuberculosis was the basic cause of death. The mortality rates were calculated per 100,000 inhabitants according to gender and age. We found a decrease in Tuberculosis mortality of approximately 42% for men and 54% for women across the period analyzed. The International Classification of Diseases was used: ICD-9, for the period of 1980 to 1995; ICD-10 for 1996 to 2001. Deaths are related to late diagnosis, which is a problem of organization of the primary health care, as neither prevention actions nor case detections by active search for respiratory symptoms were incorporated into the health professionals' practice which contributes to higher death rates in more vulnerable groups.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to explore some of the possibilities of getting information about mental and behavior disorders using the Internet, specifically at the Ministry of Health's DATASUS website. The site presented elements that illustrate the Health Information Systems' resources, which may be used by nurses as a safe and simplified way of obtaining data. The study focused on psychiatric hospitalization through the SIH-SUS in the city of Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo. Given the nurses' needs to use technological resources that can contribute for the organization of the service and the analysis of the situation of the mental and behavior disorders, SIH-SUS data are a possible instrument to start the analysis whose results may make possible important and effective changes for the management of the services, in search for quality in mental and psychiatric health assistance.

RESUMO

Emergency Units frequently assist suicide attempts. It is important to study this phenomenon in adolescence, since this is a conflict period. This study aimed to outline an epidemiological profile of adolescents admitted in an Emergency Unit, who were diagnosed as suicide attempters. Thus, we examined the records of adolescents admitted at this Unit as suicide attempters in 2002. The results revealed that 77.8% of the cases are characterized as follows: female, predominant age range between 15 and 19 years old, single, white, student, living in neighborhoods with low purchasing power, taking medication during the day. Our findings were similar to those described in other studies and thus require special attention.

RESUMO

This study aimed at identifying the viewpoints and the knowledge on depression of nurses working in the basic health network. The 73 participants who answered two self-applicable questionnaires were distributed in 28 health units. The general results concerning their viewpoints and knowledge are, in most answers, in accordance with what was expected and showed average knowledge related to depression. However, the individual analysis of such answers indicate that these professionals are not in direct contact with and do not know how to identify depressed patients. They do not observe these indicators in the patients that they assist or do not understand that it is their task to do so. Reflections appeared concerning the possible relationship between mental health actions and their professional education. In this way, undergraduate and continuing education become more important in the development of nursing actions for mental health.

RESUMO

The considerable increase in the elderly population is resulting in several studies on the effects of external accidents to the population included in this age band. This study aimed at characterizing the elderly people victimized by traffic accidents and assisted in a public hospital in the City of Ribeirão Preto-SP, Brazil. A retrospective study was conducted using the data collected by the Epidemiological Surveillance Services of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto Faculty of Medicine. The data referring to 112 victims aged 60 to 85 years were analyzed from January to December, 1998. In this way, it can be observed that, among them, 56.3% of the victims are males and 42% are aged 60 to 64 years. Most of the subjects were pedestrians (41.4%) and their most frequently injured body area was the head (36.7%). It is important to point out that 50.9% had some type of sequel resulting from the trauma. This work aimed at emphasizing such theme by pointing out the importance of studies in the area of gerontology associated with traffic accidents.
