RESUMO

Background: Pauwels type III femoral neck fractures, as a serious type of femoral neck fractures, have brought about a heavy economic burden on families and society for the high disability rate. Through bibliometric research and visualized analysis, this study aimed at elucidating the global research status of Pauwels type III femoral neck fractures to date, and predicting the future research trends in this field. Methods: Publications and associated information on Pauwels type III femoral neck fractures to date were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection, and by VoSviewer and R package "bibliometrix", bibliometric analysis and visual presentation was conducted. Results: By retrieval, a total of 98 studies were refinedly extracted, and the volume of publications in this field increased year-over-year. China ranked first in terms of total publication volume and H-Index, with its total citation records second only to the United States. The country with the highest average citation frequency was Switzerland. SHANGHAI JIAO TONG UNIVERSITY was the most productive research institution. Among the authors in this field, Li, Jiantao had published the most researches. INJURY INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF THE CARE OF THE INJURED and JOURNAL OF ORTHOPAEDIC TRAUMA were the two magazines with the highest publication volume, total citation records, and H-index. According to keywords co-occurrence analysis, the research content in the past 24 years is mainly divided into four different dimensions. Finite element analysis, femoral neck system, medial buttress plate, cannulated screws, hip screw, open reduction, complications are hot topics for future research. Conclusions: According to the global trends analysis of publications production, Pauwels type III femoral neck fractures are receiving increasing attention and input from scholars. China has made the greatest scientific research contribution among countries, but its academic quality should be improved further. The modified therapeutic methods designed for addressing the complications of traditional internal fixation for Pauwels III femoral neck fractures will be the future research hotspot.

Silicon (Si)-based anodes offer high theoretical capacity for lithium-ion batteries but suffer from severe volume changes and continuous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) degradation. Here, we address these challenges by selective methylation of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL), thus shifting the unstable bulk polymerization to controlled interfacial reactions and resulting in a highly elastic SEI. Comparative studies of 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane (2MDOL) and 4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane (4MDOL) reveal that 4MDOL, with its larger ring strain and more stable radical intermediates due to hyperconjugation effect, promotes the formation of high-molecular-weight polymeric species at the electrode-electrolyte interface. This elastic, polymer-rich SEI effectively accommodates volume changes of Si and inhibits continuous side reactions. Our designed electrolyte enables Si-based anode to achieve 85.4% capacity retention after 400 cycles at 0.5 C without additives, significantly outperforming conventional carbonate-based electrolytes. Full cells also demonstrate stable long-term cycling. This work provides new insights into molecular-level electrolyte design for high-performance Si anodes, offering a promising pathway toward next-generation lithium-ion batteries with enhanced energy density and longevity.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the occurrence and risk factors for low back pain post-percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) in osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) patients. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 148 OVCF patients treated from March 2020 to 2023. The incidence of low back pain post-PVP was recorded, and logistic regression analysis was used to identify associated risk factors. RESULTS: Low back pain occurred in 34 out of 148 patients (22.97%). Logistic regression identified age (>75) (P=0.039), number of fractured vertebrae (≥2) (P=0.004), presence of lumbar spine comorbidity (P=0.019), emotional status (P=0.006), site of fracture (P=0.006), and preoperative fascial injury (P=0.039) as independent risk factors influencing the development of low back pain after PVP in OVCF patients. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that age (>75), number of fractured vertebrae (≥2), lumbar spine comorbidities, and site of fracture had area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.626, 0.614, 0.623, and 0.667, respectively, in predicting low back pain post-PVP. CONCLUSION: Age, number of fractured vertebrae, presence of lumbar spine comorbidities, emotional status, site of fracture, and preoperative fascial injury are significant independent risk factors for the occurrence of low back pain after PVP in patients with OVCF. These findings are crucial for alleviating postoperative low back pain and provide valuable insight for postoperative pain management.

BACKGROUND: B-type natriuretic peptide or N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide is the only blood biomarker in established risk calculators for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Profiling systemic-originated plasma immunoglobulin G (IgG) N-glycans, which reflect different components of the pathophysiology of PAH including immune dysregulation and inflammation, may improve PAH risk assessment. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to identify plasma IgG N-glycan biomarkers that predict survival in PAH to improve risk assessment. METHODS: This cohort study examined 622 PAH patients from 2 national centers (Beijing [discovery] cohort: n = 273; Shanghai [validation] cohort: n = 349). Plasma IgG N-glycomes were profiled by a robust mass spectrometry-based method. Prognostic IgG N-glycan traits were identified and validated in the 2 cohorts using Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier survival analyses. The added value of IgG N-glycan traits to previously established risk models was assessed using Harrell C-indexes and survival analysis. RESULTS: Plasma IgG fucosylation was found to predict survival independent of age and sex in the discovery cohort (HR: 0.377; 95% CI: 0.168-0.845; P = 0.018) with confirmation in the validation cohort (HR: 0.445; 95% CI: 0.264-0.751; P = 0.005). IgG fucosylation remained a robust predictor of mortality in combined cohorts after full adjustment and in subgroup analyses. Integrating IgG fucosylation into previously established risk models improved their predictive capacity, marked by an overall elevation in Harrell C-indexes. IgG fucosylation was useful in further stratifying the intermediate-risk patients classified by a previously established model. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma IgG fucosylation informs PAH prognosis independent of established factors, offering additional value for predicting PAH outcomes.

RESUMO

In the development of covalent inhibitors, acrylamides warhead is one of the most popular classes of covalent warheads. In recent years, researchers have made different structural modifications to acrylamides warheads, resulting in the creation of fluorinated acrylamide warheads and cyano acrylamide warheads. These new warheads exhibit superior selectivity, intracellular accumulation, and pharmacokinetic properties. Additionally, although ketoamide warheads have been applied in the design of covalent inhibitors for viral proteins, it has not received sufficient attention. Combined with the studies in kinase inhibitors and antiviral drugs, this review presents the structural features and the progression of acrylamides warheads, offering a perspective on future research and development in this field.

Central nervous system(CNS) disorders can significantly impact patients' daily lives, impairing their ability to work and imposing a substantial financial burden on their families. In recent years, the incidence of CNS diseases has shown a significant increase with the continuous improvement of the quality of life and the aging problem. Therefore, the search for new preventive and curative drugs has been a research hotspot for this group of diseases. Osthole(OST), isolated from Umbelliferae such as Cnidium monnieri, Angelica sinensis, and Heracleum hemsleyanum, possesses a variety of pharmacological effects such as neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic effects. There is increasing evidence that OST has demonstrated significant preventive and curative effects in various CNS disease models. This paper systematically reviewed the research progress of OST in preventing and treating CNS diseases by reviewing domestic and international literature to provide more in-depth theoretical support for the future clinical application of OST in the prevention and treatment of CNS diseases.

Mesenchymal stem cells can differentiate into adipocyte precursor cells, and the balance of stem cell differentiation determines the quantity of adipocytes. Early-stage adipose tissue expression profiling revealed abnormal expression of DKK3 in the high-fat group. Moreover, DKK3 is enriched in the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, and studies have shown that DKK3 can serve as a gene involved in early regulation of adipogenesis. Therefore, this study focuses on exploring how DKK3 regulates the molecular mechanism of adipocyte differentiation through the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. In this experiment, the role of DKK3 in the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells into adipocyte precursors was validated using in vitro cultured chicken bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. The results showed that overexpression of DKK3 led to a significant downregulation of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway-related marker gene expression (P < 0.05), a significant upregulation of adipogenic differentiation-related genes (P < 0.05), an increase in lipid droplet content, a significant increase in OD value (P < 0.05), a significant upregulation of mitochondrial oxidative respiratory-related marker gene expression (P < 0.05), and a significant downregulation of mitochondrial autophagy-related marker genes (P < 0.05). Conversely, the results were opposite after interfering with DKK3 gene expression. In this study, 4 SNP sites, including g.8419139, g.8419556, g.8419560, and g.8419598, were detected in the 7th exon of DKK3, among which the g.8419598 (C > T) site was significantly correlated with abdominal fat weight and abdominal fat rate in 100-day-old Ma Huang chickens (P < 0.001).

Introduction: This study investigates the dynamic shifts in soil bacterial communities within a Salix matsudana afforested ecosystem transitioning from agricultural land. Understanding the temporal variability in bacterial diversity and community structures is crucial for informing forest management and conservation strategies, particularly in regions undergoing afforestation. Methods: We employed high-throughput sequencing across three distinct months (August, September, and October) to analyze the temporal variability in bacterial community composition and diversity. Network analysis was utilized to identify keystone species and assess community stability under varying environmental conditions, including fluctuations in temperature and precipitation. Results: We uncover significant temporal variability in bacterial diversity and community structures, which are closely tied to fluctuations in temperature and precipitation. Our findings reveal the abundance of the dominant bacterial phyla, such as Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria, which did not change overall, highlighting the stability and resilience of the microbial community across seasonal transitions. Notably, the increasing similarity in community composition from August to October indicates a reduction in species turnover, likely driven by more homogeneous environmental conditions. Through comprehensive network analysis, we identify the pivotal role of keystone species, particularly the human pathogen Nocardia, in maintaining community stability under reduced soil moisture. The observed variations in community connectivity underscore the microbial community's resilience and adaptability to seasonal shifts, with higher stability in August and October contrasting with the instability observed in September. Discussion: These results underscore the complex interplay between stochastic and deterministic processes in bacterial community assembly, significantly shaped by prevailing environmental conditions. The insights gained from this research have far-reaching implications for forestry management and conservation strategies, particularly in regions undergoing similar afforestation efforts.

Two species of trichomonads, Tetratrichomonas buttreyi and Pentatrichomonas hominis, are common intestinal parasites that can impact animal health and productivity. Severe infection by these parasites can lead to diarrhea and wasting in affected animals. Notably, P. hominis is known to cause diarrhea and has the potential to be transmitted between animals and humans. Donkeys hold significant economic importance in China's agricultural sector. However, whether donkeys are infected with T. buttreyi and P. hominis remains unknown globally. To address this gap in knowledge, 815 fecal samples were collected from donkeys in three representative regions in Shanxi Province, North China. Then, the presence and genetic characteristics of T. buttreyi and P. hominis were examined using species-specific PCR primers amplifying the small subunit ribosomal RNA genes. The overall prevalence was detected to be 25.4% (207/815) for T. buttreyi and 0.7% (6/815) for P. hominis in donkeys in Shanxi Province. All obtained P. hominis sequences were identified as genotype CC1. Genetic analysis revealed that all P. hominis isolates from donkeys were clustered into the same branch with isolates detected in humans, suggesting possible zoonotic transmission. This study is the first to report the occurrence and prevalence of T. buttreyi and P. hominis in donkeys globally. These findings expand the host range of trichomonads and improve our understanding of their genetic diversity and zoonotic potential, providing essential baseline data for the prevention and control of these parasites in donkeys in the region.

BACKGROUND: During wound healing, fibroblast to myofibroblast transition is required for wound contraction and remodeling. While hypoxia is an important biophysical factor in wound microenvironment, the exact regulatory mechanism underlying hypoxia and fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition remains unclear. We previously found that tetraspanin CD9 plays an important role in oxygen sensing and wound healing. Herein, we investigated the effects of physiological hypoxia on fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition and the biological function and mechanism of CD9 in it. METHODS: Human skin fibroblasts (HSF) and mouse dermis wounds model were established under physiological hypoxia (2% O2). The cell viability and contractility of HSF under hypoxia were evaluated by CCK8 and collagen gel retraction, respectively. The expression and distribution of fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition markers and CD9 in HSF were detected by Western blotting and immunofluorescence. CD9 slicing and overexpressing HSFs were constructed to determine the role of CD9 by small interfering RNA and recombinant adenovirus vector. The association of TßR2 and TßR1 was measured by immunoprecipitation to explore the regulatory mechanism. Additionally, further validation was conducted on mouse dermis wounds model through histological analysis. RESULTS: Enhanced fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition and upregulated CD9 expression was observed under hypoxia in vitro and in vivo. Besides, reversal of fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition under hypoxia was observed when silencing CD9, suggesting that CD9 played a key role in this hypoxia-induced transition. Moreover, hypoxia increased fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition by activating TGF-ß1/Smad2/3 signaling, especially increased interaction of TßR2 and TßR1. Ultimately, CD9 was determined to directly affect TßR1-TßR2 association in hypoxic fibroblast. CONCLUSION: Collectively, these findings suggest that CD9 promotes TßR2-TßR1 association, thus driving the transition of human dermal fibroblasts to myofibroblast under hypoxia.

To assess the impact of human activities on regional nitrogen (N) flow, based on the statistical data of 27 cities in the Yangtze River Delta Region (YRD), N flow characteristics of the agricultural production and consumption system (APC) in the YRD from 2011 to 2020 were analyzed using substance flow analysis, and driving factors for N flow were analyzed using scenario analysis. The results showed that from 2011 to 2020, the mean N input intensity of the APC in the YRD was 194.6 kg·ï¼ˆhm2·a)-1, which was more than five times the national average value; thus, the YRD was a hotspot of N input intensity in China. Chemical N fertilizer was the largest component of N input, and the YRD changed from a net export area of grain and animal products to a net import area due to the rapid growth of food consumption demand. The N output of the system was mainly N loss to the environment, accounting for 53.2% on average. The N use efficiency (NUE) of cropland and the N recycling ratio of the APC ranged from 38.7-42.2% and 15.8-21.5%, respectively, which were both at a low level. In addition, the total amount of N input and output of the APC both showed a parabolic decline trend, decreasing by 11.3% and 10.0%, respectively. Spatially, the overall N input intensity showed a pattern of "high in the north and low in the south," and the spatial heterogeneity of N input intensity among cities was significant. Cities with high input intensity were mainly located in the north and east of Jiangsu, Shanghai, and northeast of Zhejiang. A significant positive spatial autocorrelation of the distribution of mean N input intensity was observed. The uncertainty of N flows was estimated using the error propagation equation. The uncertainty interval of N input and output ranged from 4.5% to 34.6%, which was roughly equivalent to the results of related studies, indicating that the model results were reliable. Based on the scenario analysis method, the decrease of the livestock scale led to a decrease of -0.27%-7.53% in the N input, making it the main reason for the decrease of total N input in the APC. Improving the NUE of cropland and re-establishing the linkage between cropland and livestock will help reduce N loss to the environment.

AIMS: ß3-AR (ß3-adrenergic receptor) is essential for cardiovascular homeostasis through regulating adipose tissue function. Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of aortic dissection and aneurysm (AD/AA). Here, we aim to investigate ß3-AR activation-mediated PVAT function in AD/AA. METHODS AND RESULTS: Aortas from patients with thoracic aortic dissection (TAD) were collected to detect ß3-AR expression in PVAT. ApoE-/- and ß-aminopropionitrile monofumarate (BAPN)-treated C57BL/6 mice were induced with Angiotensin II (AngII) to simulate AD/AA, and subsequently received either placebo or mirabegron, a ß3-AR agonist. The results demonstrated an up-regulation of ß3-AR in PVAT of TAD patients and AD/AA mice. Moreover, activation of ß3-AR by mirabegron significantly prevented AngII-induced AD/AA formation in mice. RNA-sequencing analysis of adipocytes from PVAT revealed a notable increase of the lymphangiogenic factor VEGF-C in mirabegron-treated mice. Consistently, enhanced lymphangiogenesis was found in PVAT with mirabegron treatment. Mechanistically, the number of CD4+/CD8+ T cells and CD11c+ cells was reduced in PVAT but increased in adjacent draining lymph nodes (LNs) of mirabegron-treated mice, indicating the improved draining and clearance of inflammatory cells in PVAT by lymphangiogenesis. Importantly, adipocyte-specific VEGF-C knockdown by the adeno-associated virus system restrained lymphangiogenesis and exacerbated inflammatory cell infiltration in PVAT, which ultimately abolished the protection of mirabegron on AD/AA. In addition, the conditional medium derived from mirabegron-treated adipocytes activated the proliferation and tube formation of lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs), which was abrogated by the silencing of VEGF-C in adipocytes. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings illustrated the therapeutic potential of ß3-AR activation by mirabegron on AD/AA, which promoted lymphangiogenesis by increasing adipocyte-derived VEGF-C and, therefore, ameliorated PVAT inflammation.

Introduction: Individual leaves in the image are partly veiled by other leaves, which create shadows on another leaf. To eliminate the interference of soil and leaf shadows on cotton spectra and create reliable monitoring of cotton nitrogen content, one classification method to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) image pixels is proposed. Methods: In this work, green light (550 nm) is divided into 10 levels to limit soil and leaf shadows (LS) on cotton spectrum. How many shadow has an influence on cotton spectra may be determined by the strong correlation between the vegetation index (VI) and leaf nitrogen content (LNC). Several machine learning methods were utilized to predict LNC using less disturbed VI. R-Square (R 2), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) were used to evaluate the performance of the model. Results: (i) after the spectrum were preprocessed by gaussian filter (GF), SG smooth (SG), and combination of GF and SG (GF&SG), the significant relationship between VI and LNC was greatly improved, so the Standard deviation of datasets was also decreased greatly; (ii) the image pixels were classified twice sequentially. Following the first classification, the influence of soil on vegetation index (VI) decreased. Following secondary classification, the influence of soil and LS to VI can be minimized. The relationship between the VI and LNC had improved significantly; (iii) After classifying the image pixels, the VI of 2-3, 2-4, and 2-5 have a stronger relationship with LNC accordingly. Correlation coefficients (r) can reach to 0.5. That optimizes monitoring performance when combined with GF&SG to predict LNC, support vector machine regression (SVMR) has the better performance, R 2, RMSE, and MAE up to 0.86, 1.01, and 0.71, respectively. The UAV image classification technique in this study can minimize the negative effects of soil and LS on cotton spectrum, allowing for efficient and timely predict LNC.

Currently, the relationship between axial rotation of the vertebrae and bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative computed tomography (QCT) remains controversial. The aim of this study is to quantitatively assess the effect of vertebral rotation on volumetric bone mineral density (v-BMD) and areal bone mineral density (a-BMD), further to propose the corrected strategies. To achieve this, a phantom, which was rotated from 0° to 25° in 5° increments, was utilized. Bone mineral content (BMC), a-BMD, v-BMD, and projected area (p-AREA) were measured. The Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test or one-way ANOVA was used to examine the differences in variables between the different groups. The Pearson and Spearman correlation was used to test the relationships between quantitative parameters and rotated angles. Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between angles and quantitative parameters. The findings indicate that, as the angle increased, a-BMD and v-BMD decreased (P < 0.001) , and the p-AREA increased (P < 0.001), but the BMC stays constant. The rotated angle was negative correlated (r = - 0.925, P < 0.001) with a-BMD and v-BMD (r = - 0.880, P < 0.001), positive (r = 0.930, P = < 0.001) correlated with p-AREA. The linear regression analysis showed that a-BMD = 0.808-0.01 × Angle and v-BMD = 151.808-1.588 × Angle. This study showed that, axial rotation might lead to a lower measured for a-BMD and v-BMD, it should be modified. RESUMO

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Macrophage accumulation and activation function as hallmarks of atherosclerosis and have complex and intricate dynamics throughout all components and stages of atherosclerotic plaques. In this review, we focus on the regulatory roles and underlying mechanisms of macrophage phenotypes and metabolism in atherosclerosis. We highlight the diverse range of macrophage phenotypes present in atherosclerosis and their potential roles in progression and regression of atherosclerotic plaque. Furthermore, we discuss the challenges and opportunities in developing therapeutic strategies for preventing and treating atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Dysregulation of macrophage polarization between the proinflammatory M1 and anti-inflammatory M2 phenotypealters the immuno-inflammatory response during atherosclerosis progression, leading to plaque initiation, growth, and ultimately rupture. Altered metabolism of macrophage is a key feature for their function and the subsequent progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The immunometabolism of macrophage has been implicated to macrophage activation and metabolic rewiring of macrophages within atherosclerotic lesions, thereby shifting altered macrophage immune-effector and tissue-reparative function. Targeting macrophage phenotypes and metabolism are potential therapeutic strategies in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Understanding the precise function and metabolism of specific macrophage subsets and their contributions to the composition and growth of atherosclerotic plaques could reveal novel strategies to delay or halt development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases and their associated pathophysiological consequences. Identifying biological stimuli capable of modulating macrophage phenotypes and metabolism may lead to the development of innovative therapeutic approaches for treating patients with atherosclerosis and coronary artery diseases.

BACKGROUND: Our study aims to investigate the mechanisms through which Fc receptor-like A (FCRLA) promotes renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and to examine its significance in relation to tumor immune infiltration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The correlation between FCRLA and data clinically related to RCC was explored using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), then validated using Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) gene chip data. Enrichment and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analyses were performed for FCRLA and its co-expressed genes. FCRLA was knocked down in RCC cell lines to evaluate its impact on biological behavior. Then the potential downstream regulators of FCRLA were determined by western blotting, and rescue experiments were performed for verification. The relevance between FCRLA and various immune cells was analyzed through GSEA, TIMER, and GEPIA tools. TIDE and ESTIMATE algorithms were used to predict the effect of FCRLA in immunotherapy. RESULTS: Fc receptor-like A was associated with clinical and T stages and could predict the M stage (AUC = 0.692) and 1-3- and 5-year survival rates (AUC = 0.823, 0.834, and 0.862) of RCC patients. Higher expression of FCLRA predicted an unfavorable overall survival (OS) in TCGA-RCC and GSE167573 datasets (p = 0.03, p = 0.04). FCRLA promoted the malignant biological behavior of RCC cells through the pERK1/2/-MMP2 pathway and was associated with tumor immune microenvironment in RCC. CONCLUSION: Fc receptor-like A is positively correlated with poor outcomes in RCC patients and plays an oncogenic role in RCC through the pERK1/2-MMP2 pathway. Patients with RCC might benefit from immunotherapy targeting FCRLA.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a powerful tool to detect cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and health conditions. We proposed a new method for evaluating ECG for efficient medical diagnosis in daily life. By splitting the signal according to the cardiac activity cycle, the periodic split attractor reconstruction (PSAR) method is proposed with time embedding, including three types of splitting methods to show its chaotic domain characteristics. We merged the CVDs dataset and the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) first-lead ECG signal dataset to validate the performance of PSAR for diagnosis and health monitoring using PSAR density maps as SE-ResNet input features. PSAR under 3 split methods showed different sensitivities for different CVDs. While in OSAS monitoring, PSAR showed good ability to recognize sleep abnormalities.

Superalloy materials exhibit susceptibility to fracture failures stemming from the influence of thermomechanical factors. To comprehensively understand the fracture mechanisms, material properties, root causes of failure, and the subsequent optimization of alloys, a detailed analysis of the internal fracture process and the morphological traits of the fracture surface is imperative. Traditional analysis of fracture surfaces solely relies on 2D images, thus lacking crucial 3D information. Although in situ experiments can capture the fracture process, their effectiveness is confined to the specimen's surface, precluding insight into internal changes. Here we introduce an integrated framework encompassing the process of 3D reconstruction of fracture surfaces, aiming to enhance the visual information obtained with micron-level accuracy, visual intuitiveness and sense of depth. Additionally, this framework also facilitates the scrutiny and inference of internal fracture processes. These results demonstrate that under specific service conditions, material deformation fracture probably stems from a combination of surface cracking and internal cracking rather than exclusively one or the other. Overall, our description and analysis of internally initiated cracking due to defects within the specimens can be beneficial in guiding future alloy design and optimization efforts.

The development of environmentally responsive biodegradable polymers is a promising solution for balancing the stability and degradability of biodegradable plastics. In this study, a commercial biodegradable polyester, poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene terephthalate) (PBAT), was used as the substrate and was synthetically modified with a small amount of anionic sodium 1-3-isophthalate-5-sulfonate (SIPA) to obtain the ionized random poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene terephthalate-co-butylene 5-sodiosulfoisophthalate) (PBATS). The introduction of the sodium sulfonate ionic group enhanced the mechanical and heat-resistant properties of the material, while significantly improving the hydrophilicity and water absorption of the copolyesters of PBATSs and endowing them with special pH-responsive degradation properties. Compared with PBAT, PBATS copolyesters could accelerate degradation in acidic or alkaline buffer solutions and natural seawater, while degradation was inhibited in neutral buffer solutions at pH 7.2. Degradation experiments in simulated gastric, intestinal, and body fluids revealed that the copolyester showed specific and rapid degradation in acidic gastric fluids. This environmentally-responsive degradable material greatly expands the special applications of biodegradable polyesters in the fields of environmental remediation and medical applications.

New materials and the interactions between them are the basis of novel energy storage devices such as supercapacitors and batteries. In recent years, because of the increasing demand for electricity as an energy source, the development of new energy storage materials is among the most actively studied topics. Conductive polymers (CPs), because of their intrinsic electrochemical activity and electrical conductivity, have also been intensively explored. While most of the high capacitance reported in the literature comes from hybrid materials, for example, conductive polymers composed of metal oxides and carbon materials, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, new chemistry and the 3D structure of conductive polymers remain critical. This comprehensive review focuses on the basic properties of three popular conductive polymers and their composites with carbon materials and metal oxides that have been actively explored as energy storage materials, i.e., polypyrrole (PPy), polyaniline (PANi), and polythiophene (PTh), and various types of electrolytes, including aqueous, organic, quasi-solid, and self-healing electrolytes. Important experimental parameters affecting material property and morphology are also discussed. Electrochemical and analytical techniques frequently employed in material and supercapacitor research are presented. In particular, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are discussed in detail, including how to extract data from spectra to calculate key parameters. Pros and cons of CP-based supercapacitors are discussed together with their potential applications.
