Similar to conventional football, the modality dedicated to footballers with cerebral palsy (CP) requires referees who cope with the physical demands imposed during competitive matches to apply the rules of the game. While a significant body of research has explored the physical demands on referees in mainstream football, there is a noticeable lack of data regarding CP football. This study aimed to examine the physical response of international referees participating in different levels of world competitions for footballers with CP. Thirteen international referees, who officiated 49 matches in the men's 2022 World Cup (1st to 15th ranked teams) and 2022 World Championships (16th to 30th ranked teams), participated in this study. A cross-sectional design was used to determine the physical responses and compare the 1st and 2nd halves and the performance in the different tournaments, recording physical variables throughout the matches. Significant higher physical responses were observed in the World Cup in comparison to the World Championship. Overall, high-level tournaments have been shown to elicit more intense physical responses from referees officiating CP football matches compared to lower-level tournaments. For the World Cup, a significantly higher number of accelerations and decelerations were registered in the 1st half compared to the 2nd half. This information may be useful for the strength and conditioning coaches of referees to plan weekly training sessions more specifically and adjust the periodical training load and post-match recovery protocols.

Resumen: Introducción: La enfermedad de Parkinson (EP) es un trastorno neurológico y progresivo caracterizado por síntomas motores y no motores que influyen en el deterioro de la calidad de vida. Objetivo: Esta investigación tiene como objetivo analizar los efectos de un programa de intervención multicomponente basado en la actividad física y el deporte en la funcionalidad de personas con EP, tanto con alta como con baja afectación. Metodología: Para ello, 16 personas (13 hombres y 3 mujeres) con EP participaron en este estudio, dividiéndose en 2 grupos según su nivel de afectación, el de baja (GBA, n = 12) y el de alta (GAA, n = 4). Se realizó una intervención de un programa de ejercicio físico multicomponente a todos los participantes durante 4 semanas (2 sesiones de 50 minutos, por semana). Se realizó una batería de test funcionales (Six minutes walk test (6MWT); Single-leg Stance test (SLS); Time Up and Go (TUG) y The five times sitto-stand Chair (FTSTS)) una semana antes (T1) y una semana después de la intervención (T2). Resultados: El total de la muestra mejoró significativamente en el test SLS (P < 0.05; d > 0.56, moderado). Sin embargo, analizando cada grupo, de conformidad con su nivel de afectación, el grupo GBA obtuvo mejoras significativas en SLS y 5STS (d= 0.44 - 0.68, p < 0.05), mientras que no se observaron diferencias significativas en el grupo GAA en ninguna variable analizada. Conclusiones: Los resultados del presente estudio muestran la necesidad de realizar más estudios con programas de larga duración y más frecuencia semanal.


Abstract: Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms that influence the impairment of quality of life. Objective: This research aims to analyze the effects of a multicomponent intervention program based on physical exercise and sport on the physiological functions of people with PD, both with high and low impairment. Methodology: For this purpose, sixteen people (13 men and 3 women) with PD participated in this study, divided into two groups according to their level of impairment, low (GBA, n = 12) and high (GAA, n = 4). A multicomponent physical exercise program intervention was administered to all participants for 4 weeks (2 sessions of 50 minutes per week). A battery of functional tests (Six minutes walk test (6MWT); Single-leg Stance test (SLS); Time Up and Go (TUG) and The five times sit-to-stand Chair (FTSTS)) was performed one week before (T1) and one week after the intervention (T2). Results: The total sample improved significantly on the SLS test (P < 0.05; d > 0.56, moderate). However, analyzing each group according to their level of impairment, the GBA group obtained significant improvements in SLS and 5STS (d= 0.44 - 0.68, P < 0.05), while no significant differences were observed in the GAA group in any of the variables analyzed. Conclusion: The results of the present study show the need for further studies with longer duration and more frequent weekly programs.


Resumo: Introdução: A doença de Parkinson (DP) é um distúrbio neurológico progressivo, caracterizado por sintomas motores e não motores que influenciam a deterioração da qualidade de vida. Objetivo: Esta pesquisa visa analisar os efeitos de um programa de intervenção multicomponente baseado na atividade física e no esporte sobre a funcionalidade das pessoas com DP, tanto com deficiência alta quanto baixa. Metodologia: Para este fim, 16 pessoas (13 homens e 3 mulheres) com DP participaram deste estudo, divididos em dois grupos de acordo com seu nível de afecção, o baixo (GBA, n = 12) e o alto (GAA, n = 4). Uma intervenção de um programa de exercícios físicos multicomponentes foi realizada com todos os participantes durante 4 semanas (2 sessões de 50 minutos por semana). Uma bateria de testes funcionais (Six minutes walk test (6MWT); Single-leg Stance test (SLS); Time Up and Go (TUG) y The five times sit-to-stand Chair (FTSTS)) foi realizada uma semana antes (T1) e uma semana após a intervenção (T2). Resultados: A amostra total melhorou significativamente no teste SLS (P < 0,05; d > 0,56, moderado). Não obstante, analisando cada grupo de acordo com seu nível de deficiência, o grupo GBA obteve melhorias significativas no SLS e 5STS (d= 0,44 - 0,68, p < 0,05), mas não se observaram diferenças significativas no grupo GAA em nenhuma variável analisada. Conclusões: Os resultados do presente estudo mostram a necessidade de mais estudos com programas de maior duração e mais frequência semanal.

This study aimed to explore the match-physical response of international-level footballers with cerebral palsy (CP) according to contextual factors such as team ranking, the quality level of opposition, and match outcome. Eighty-two male outfield footballers with CP from top-ranked teams (n = 26) and bottom-ranked teams (n = 56) took part in this study. The match-player response was recorded using global positioning devices considering the total distance, distance covered at different velocities and number of short-term actions. Players from top-ranked teams covered more distance at low intensities compared to players from bottom-ranked teams (p < 0.05; 0.45 < ES < 0.49). Higher sprint distance, moderate and high accelerations/decelerations were found in players from top-ranked teams playing against teams of similar levels (p < 0.05; 0.73g< 0.86). When players from bottom-ranked teams played against teams of equivalent rank, more physical requirements were presented in total distance, running from medium to sprint intensities, and the number of short-term actions (p < 0.0.05; -0.55S < -0.89). Players from the top-ranking teams presented greater sprint demands in losing matches (p<0.05; dg=-1.01). Considering the bottom-ranking opposition, players presented more running demands in matches with losing results in moderate running, sprinting, and moderate-to-high deceleration (p < 0.05; -0.61 < dg < -0.64). The match-physical response of players with CP varies according to the contextual factors studied. The results provide advice for coaches and classifiers to understand more comprehensively the competing demands in CP football. This knowledge could help practitioners to prepare competition matches and planning training load or post-match recovery strategies, but also for the observation assessments of the classification process in this team para-sport.

This study aimed to investigate the association between the optimum power load in the bench press (BP), shoulder press (SP), and prone bench pull (PBP) exercises and acceleration (ACC) and speed performances in 11 National Team wheelchair basketball (WB) players with similar levels of disability. All athletes were previously familiarized with the testing procedures that were performed on the same day during the competitive period of the season. First, athletes performed a wheelchair 20-m sprint assessment and, subsequently, a maximum power load test to determine the mean propulsive power (MPP) in the BP, SP, and PBP. A Pearson product-moment correlation was used to examine the relationships between sprint velocity (VEL), ACC, and the MPP in the three exercises. The significance level was set as p < .05. Large to very large significant associations were observed between VEL and ACC and the MPP in the BP, SP, and PBP exercises (r varying from .60 to .77; p < .05). The results reveal that WB players who produce more power in these three exercises are also able to accelerate faster and achieve higher speeds over short distances. Given the key importance of high and successive ACCs during wheelchair game-related maneuvers, it is recommended that coaches frequently assess the optimum power load in BP, SP, and PBP in WB players, even during their regular training sessions.

To assess the effects of plyometric jump training (PJT) in female soccer player's vertical jump height, a review was conducted using the data sources PubMed, MEDLINE, Web Of Science and SCOPUS. Only peer-review articles were included. To qualify for inclusion in the meta-analysis, studies must have included (i) a PJT programme of at least 2 weeks, (ii) cohorts of healthy female soccer players with no restriction for age, (iii) a control group, (iv) a measure of countermovement jump (CMJ). The inverse variance random-effects model for meta-analyses was used. From 7,136 records initially identified through database searching, 8 were eligible for meta-analysis, comprising 9 training groups (n = 99) and 9 control groups (n = 94). The magnitude of the main effect was moderate (ES = 1.01 [95%CI = 0.36-1.66], Z = 3.04, p = 0.002). Sub-group analyses were performed (i.e., PJT frequency, duration and total number of sessions), revealing no significant subgroup differences (p = 0.34-0.96). Among the studies included in this review, none reported injury or other adverse effects. In conclusion, PJT is effective in female soccer players for the improvement of vertical jump height. In future, research must identify specific dose-response relationships following PJT, particularly in the long term.

Plyometric jump training (PJT) is a frequently used and effective means to improve amateur and elite soccer players' physical fitness. However, it is unresolved how different PJT frequencies per week with equal overall training volume may affect training-induced adaptations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the effects of an in-season 8 week PJT with one session vs. two sessions per week and equal training volume on components of physical fitness in amateur female soccer players. A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted. Participants (N = 23; age, 21.4 ± 3.2 years) were randomly assigned to a one session PJT per-week (PJT-1, n = 8), two sessions PJT per-week (PJT-2, n = 8) or an active control group (CON, n = 7). Before and after training, participants performed countermovement jumps (CMJ), drop-jumps from a 20-cm drop-height (DJ20), a maximal kicking velocity test (MKV), the 15-m linear sprint-time test, the Meylan test for the assessment of change of direction ability (CoDA), and the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery endurance test (Yo-YoIR1). Results revealed significant main effects of time for the CMJ, DJ20, MKV, 15-m sprint, CoDA, and the Yo-YoIR1 (all p < 0.001; d = 0.57-0.83). Significant group × time interactions were observed for the CMJ, DJ20, MKV, 15-m sprint, CoDA, and the Yo-YoIR1 (all p < 0.05; d = 0.36-0.51). Post-hoc analyses showed similar improvements for PJT-1 and PJT-2 groups in CMJ (Δ10.6%, d = 0.37; and Δ10.1%, d = 0.51, respectively), DJ20 (Δ12.9%, d = 0.47; and Δ13.1%, d = 0.54, respectively), MKV (Δ8.6%, d = 0.52; and Δ9.1%, d = 0.47, respectively), 15-m sprint (Δ8.3%, d = 2.25; and Δ9.5%, d = 2.67, respectively), CoDA (Δ7.5%, d = 1.68; and Δ7.4%, d = 1.16, respectively), and YoYoIR1 (Δ10.3%, d = 0.22; and Δ9.9%, d = 0.26, respectively). No significant pre-post changes were found for CON (all p > 0.05; Δ0.5-4.2%, d = 0.03-0.2). In conclusion, higher PJT exposure in terms of session frequency has no extra effects on female soccer players' physical fitness development when jump volume is equated during a short-term (i.e., 8 weeks) training program. From this, it follows that one PJT session per week combined with regular soccer-specific training appears to be sufficient to induce physical fitness improvements in amateur female soccer players.

Optimal reactive strength index: is it an accurate variable to optimize plyometric training effects on measures of physical fitness in young soccer players? J Strength Cond Res 32(4): 885-893, 2018-This study aimed to compare the effects of drop-jump training using a fixed drop-box height (i.e., 30-cm [FIXED]) vs. an optimal (OPT) drop-box height (i.e., 10-cm to 40-cm: generating an OPT reactive strength index [RSI]) in youth soccer players' physical fitness. Athletes were randomly allocated to a control group (n = 24; age = 13.7 years), a fixed drop-box height group (FIXED, n = 25; age = 13.9 years), or an OPT drop-box height group (OPT, n = 24; age = 13.1 years). Before and after 7 weeks of training, tests for the assessment of jumping (countermovement jump [CMJ], 5 multiple bounds), speed (20-m sprint time), change of direction ability (CODA [Illinois test]), strength {RSI and 5 maximal squat repetition test (5 repetition maximum [RM])}, endurance (2.4-km time trial), and kicking ability (maximal kicking distance) were undertaken. Analyses revealed main effects of time for all dependent variables (p < 0.001, d = 0.24-0.72), except for 20-m sprint time. Analyses also revealed group × time interactions for CMJ (p < 0.001, d = 0.51), depth jump (DJ) (p < 0.001, d = 0.30), 20-m sprint time (p < 0.001, d = 0.25), CODA (p < 0.001, d = 0.22), and 5RM (p < 0.01, d = 0.16). Post hoc analyses revealed increases for the FIXED group (CMJ: 7.4%, d = 0.36; DJ: 19.2%, d = 0.49; CODA: -3.1%, d = -0.21; 5RM: 10.5%, d = 0.32) and the OPT group (CMJ: 16.7%, d = 0.76; DJ: 36.1%, d = 0.79; CODA: -4.4%, d = -0.34; 5RM: 18.1%, d = 0.47). Post hoc analyses also revealed increases for the OPT group in 20-m sprint time (-3.7%, d = 0.27). Therefore, to maximize the effects of plyometric training, an OPT approach is recommended. However, using adequate fixed drop-box heights may provide a rational and practical alternative.

During the preseason, futsal players deal with large internal load, which may result in a reduction in physical performance. The aims of this study were to compare the session rating of perceived exertion training load (s-RPE TL) during the preseason between two teams; and to analyze the changes on the delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), aerobic- and speed-power characteristics in players accumulating different s-RPE TL (Low (LTL) vs. High (HTL)). Twenty-eight players (Team A, n = 15; Team B, n = 13) were recruited. The s-RPE TL was monitored throughout the preseason phase (five weeks) in both teams. The coaches of each team planned the activities that comprised their training programs, without any interference from the researchers. Team A evaluated countermovement jumps (CMJ) and DOMS weekly. Team B performed squat jumps (SJ), CMJ, 5 m and 15 m sprints, and a futsal intermittent endurance test (PVFIET) before and after the preseason. Team B accumulated an almost-certainly greater s-RPE TL than Team A. In Team A, the CMJ height was likely to almost certainly improved for the HTL group from week 3. In Team B, the 5 m and 15 m sprint likely decreased after the preseason. Changes in 5 m (r = -0.61) and 15 m (r = -0.56) were correlated with total s-RPE TL. Changes in PVFIET were positively associated with changes in sprint, but inversely related to the baseline. s-RPE TL differed between both teams, and substantial gains in neuromuscular performance were observed for the HTL group in Team A. Slower and faster players in Team B showed distinct intermittent-endurance and speed adaptive responses during the high-volume preseason.

Los objetivos del estudio fueron describir la carga percibida diferenciada (dRPE CE) en un equipo de fútbol durante seis semanas de entrenamiento, analizar si existen diferencias en la dRPE CE entre grupos que realizan dos entrenamientos de pliometría con distinto volumen y analizar la evolución a lo largo de las semanas de la dRPE en ambos grupos. Se registró la carga percibida mediante la percepción subjetiva del esfuerzo respiratorio (RPEres) y muscular (RPEmus) de catorce jugadores de fútbol de un equipo de 2.ª División B de la Liga de Fútbol Española, durante seis semanas. Los jugadores fueron divididos en dos grupos, realizando diferentes volúmenes de entrenamiento de fuerza. El primer grupo (G1FX, 24,42 ± 4,35 años, 1,80 ± 0,05 m, 77,32 ± 6,40 kg, 23,81 ± 1,49 kg/m2) realizó un entrenamiento de pliometría en el eje horizontal, y el segundo grupo (G2FX2, 22,43 ± 2,82 años, 1,82 ± 0,07 m, 76,65 ± 7,56 kg, 22,99 ± 1,13 kg/m2) realizó el mismo entrenamiento de fuerza pero con el doble de volumen. Los resultados obtenidos en el presente estudio no mostraron diferencias significativas entre ambos grupos en la dRPE CE en ninguna de las seis semanas registradas y tampoco se obtuvieron diferencias en ninguno de los dos grupos en dicho periodo, ni en el RPEres CE ni en el RPEmus CE. Realizar mayor volumen de entrenamiento de pliometría no implica que los jugadores que más volumen han realizado perciban un mayor RPEres CE ni RPEmus CE.

The purpose of this study was to describe the differentiated perceived exertion load rate (dRPE) in a soccer team during six training weeks analyzing the differences in dRPE between groups having two-plyometric training with different volume and analyze the evolution in both groups. During six weeks, perceived load was registered by the subjective rating of perceived exertion (RPE re) and muscular (RPE mu) in 14 soccer players from the 2° División B de la Liga de Fútbol Española [2° B Division of the Soccer Spanish League]. Participants were divided into two groups to work different strength training. The first group (G1FX, 24,42 ± 4,35 years, 1,80 ± 0,05 m, 77,32 ± 6,40 kg, 23,81 ± 1,49 kg/m2) practiced a plyometric training in horizontal axis and the second one (G2FX2, 22,43 ± 2,82 years, 1,82 ± 0,07 m, 76,65 ± 7,56 kg, 22,99 ± 1,13 kg/m2) did the same training, but having double strength volume. Along the six weeks, the results did not show either significant differences between the groups in dRPE nor RPE es CE or RPE mus. Performing higher plyometric training does not mean that those who have practiced more volume would perceive higher RPE es or RPE mus.

Os jogadores foram divididos em dois grupos, realizando diferentes volumes de treinamento de força. O primeiro grupo (G1FX, 24,42 ± 4,35 anos, 1,80 ± 0,05 m, 77,32 ± 6,40 kg, 23,81 ± 1,49 kg/m2) realizou um treinamento de pliometria no eixo horizontal, e o segundo grupo (G2FX2, 22,43 ± 2,82 anos, 1,82 ± 0,07 m, 76,65 ± 7,56 kg, 22,99 ± 1,13 kg/m2) realizou o mesmo treinamento de força, porém com o dobro do volume. Effects of two different volume-equated weekly distributed short-term plyometric training programs on futsal players' physical performance. J Strength Cond Res 31(7): 1787-1794, 2017-The aim was to analyze the effect of 2 different plyometric training programs (i.e., 1 vs. 2 sessions per week, same total weekly volume) on physical performance in futsal players. Forty-four futsal players were divided into 3 training groups differing in weekly plyometric training load: the 2 days per week plyometric training group (PT2D, n = 15), the 1 day per week plyometric training group (PT1D, n = 12), and the control group (CG, n = 12) which did not perform plyometric training. The results of this study showed that in-season futsal training per se was capable of improving repeat sprint ability (RSA) (effect size [ES] = -0.59 to -1.53). However, while change of direction ability (CODA) was maintained during the training period (ES = 0.00), 15-m sprint (ES = 0.73), and vertical jump (VJ) performance (ES = -0.30 to -1.37) were significantly impaired. By contrast, PT2D and PT1D plyometric training were effective in improving futsal players' 15-m sprint (ES = -0.64 to -1.00), CODA (ES = -1.83 to -5.50), and horizontal jump (ES = 0.33-0.64) performance. Nonetheless, all groups (i.e., PT2D, PT1D, and CG) presented a reduction in VJ performance (ES = -0.04 to -1.37). Regarding RSA performance, PT1D showed a similar improvement compared with CG (ES = -0.65 to -1.53) after the training intervention, whereas PT2D did not show significant change (ES = -0.04 to -0.38). These results may have considerable practical relevance for the optimal design of plyometric training programs for futsal players, given that a 1-day-per-week plyometric training program is more efficient than a 2-day-per-week plyometric training program to improve the futsal players' physical performance.
