RESUMO

Aromatic amino acid oxidation products (AAAOPs) are newly discovered risk substances of thermal processes. Due to its significant polarity and trace level in food matrices, there are no efficient pre-treatment methods available to enrich AAAOPs. Herein, we proposed a magnetic cationic covalent organic framework (Fe3O4@EB-iCOF) as an adsorbent for dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction (DMSPE). Benefiting from the unique charged characteristics of Fe3O4@EB-iCOF, AAAOPs can be enriched through electrostatic interaction and π-π interactions. Under the optimal DMSPE conditions, the combined HPLC-MS/MS method demonstrated good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.990) and a low detection limit (0.11-7.5 µg·kg-1) for AAAOPs. In addition, the method was applied to real sample and obtained satisfactory recoveries (86.8 % âˆ¼ 109.9 %). Especially, we applied this method to the detection of AAAOPs in meat samples and conducted a preliminarily study on its formation rules, which provides a reliable basis for assessing potential dietary risks.

Introduction: Breast cancer ranks among the most prevalent cancers in women, characterized by significant morbidity, disability, and mortality. Presently, chemotherapy is the principal clinical approach for treating breast cancer; however, it is constrained by limited targeting capability and an inadequate therapeutic index. Photothermal therapy, as a non-invasive approach, offers the potential to be combined with chemotherapy to improve tumor cellular uptake and tissue penetration. In this research, a mesoporous polydopamine-coated gold nanorod nanoplatform, encapsulating doxorubicin (Au@mPDA@DOX), was developed. Methods: This nanoplatform was constructed by surface coating mesoporous polydopamine (mPDA) onto gold nanorods, and doxorubicin (DOX) was encapsulated in Au@mPDA owing to π-π stacking between mPDA and DOX. The dynamic diameter, zeta potential, absorbance, photothermal conversion ability, and drug release behavior were determined. The cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, deep penetration, and anti-tumor effects were subsequently investigated in 4T1 cells. After that, fluorescence imaging, photothermal imaging and pharmacodynamics studies were utilized to evaluate the anti-tumor effects in tumor-bearing mice model. Results: This nanoplatform exhibited high drug loading capacity, excellent photothermal conversion and, importantly, pH/photothermal dual-responsive drug release behavior. The in vitro results revealed enhanced photothermal-facilitated cellular uptake, drug release and tumor penetration of Au@mPDA@DOX under near-infrared irradiation. In vivo studies confirmed that, compared with monotherapy with either chemotherapy or photothermal therapy, the anti-tumor effects of Au@mPDA@DOX are synergistically improved. Conclusion: Together with good biosafety and biocompatibility, the Au@mPDA@DOX nanoplatform provides an alternative method for safe and synergistic treatment of breast cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Women exposed to occupational noise experience adverse pregnancy outcomes. Therefore, we initiated a large, population-based, cross-sectional study to further investigate the effects of occupational noise on hearing and blood pressure among female workers of childbearing age. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A total of 6981 childbearing-aged female workers were selected for this cross-sectional study. Basic characteristics of participants were analyzed by comparing the exposed and control groups. Logistic regression models were employed to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidences intervals (CIs) for the associations of occupational noise with levels of hearing loss and blood pressure. The associations were further explored through stratification by age and duration of noise exposure. RESULTS: Compared with participants not exposed to occupational noise, increasing years of occupational noise exposure were independently associated with an elevated risk of hypertension after adjustment of age, industry classification, enterprise size and economic type. Compared to participants not exposed to occupational noise, only the prevalence of bilateral hearing loss was significantly higher after adjustments for age, industry classification, enterprise size and economic type. Compared with those with normal hearing, the ORs and 95% CIs were 1.97 (0.95-4.07), 2.22 (1.05-4.68) and 1.29 (1.06-1.57) for bilateral, unilateral and any ear hearing loss, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Occupational noise exposure is positively associated with both hypertension and bilateral hearing loss among female workers of childbearing age. Those exposed to occupational noise show an increased risk of hypertension after adjusting for potential confounders.

Brain diseases, mainly including acute brain injuries, neurodegenerative diseases, and mental disorders, have posed a significant threat to human health worldwide. Due to the limited regenerative capability and the existence of the blood-brain barrier, the brain was previously thought to be separated from the rest of the body. Currently, various cross-talks between the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral organs have been widely described, including the brain-gut axis, the brain-liver axis, the brain-skeletal muscle axis, and the brain-bone axis. Moreover, several lines of evidence indicate that leveraging systemic biology intervention approaches, including but not limited to lifestyle interventions, exercise, diet, blood administration, and peripheral immune responses, have demonstrated a significant influence on the progress and prognosis of brain diseases. The advancement of innovative proteomic and transcriptomic technologies has enriched our understanding of the nuanced interplay between peripheral organs and brain diseases. An array of novel or previously underappreciated blood-derived factors have been identified to play pivotal roles in mediating these communications. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of blood-to-brain communication following brain diseases. Special attention is given to the instrumental role of blood-derived signals, positing them as significant contributors to the complex process of brain diseases. The insights presented here aim to bridge the current knowledge gaps and inspire novel therapeutic strategies for brain diseases.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the utility of a combination of the modified Caprini score and D-dimer levels for the evaluation and management of lower extremity venous thrombosis following lung cancer surgery. The purpose was to offer insights for developing clinical intervention programs. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 224 patients who underwent surgery for lung cancer at the First Central Hospital of Baoding City. General patient data and D-dimer levels on the first day post-surgery were collected. The modified Caprini risk assessment score was calculated. All patients underwent ultrasonography of the lower limb veins before and after surgery to identify venous thrombosis in the lower limb veins. Differences in lower extremity venous thrombosis and D-dimer levels among patients in various modified Caprini score groups were compared and analyzed. RESULTS: Based on the modified Caprini risk assessment score, all patients were categorized into three groups: the low-risk, medium-risk, and high-risk groups. The groups did not differ significantly in terms of age, but the differences in the rates of lower extremity venous thrombosis in the low, intermediate, and high-risk Caprini risk groups (16.5%, 19.2%, and 37.1%, respectively) were statistically significant. Out of the total 224 patients, 47 (21%) were diagnosed with venous thromboembolisms post-surgery, and all of them had thrombosis of the intermuscular veins of the lower extremity. The difference in the modified Caprini risk assessment score between patients with and without lower extremity venous thrombosis was statistically significant (P = 0.035), as were the postoperative D-dimer levels (1.28 ± 1.64 vs. 2.69 ± 2.77, respectively; P < 0.05) between these two groups of patients. The modified Caprini risk assessment score showed an association with lower extremity venous thrombosis (r = 0.15, P = 0.56) with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.59. CONCLUSION: In this study, we found that combining the modified Caprini risk assessment score with D-dimer measurements enhanced the accuracy of assessing the severity of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This combination can be beneficial in evaluating thrombosis risk post-lung cancer surgery and holds significant clinical utility.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) not only increases patient mortality and disability, but also adversely affects motor function and the ability to perform routine daily activities. Current therapeutic approaches for, PSCI lack specificity, primarily relying on and medication and traditional cognitive therapy supplemented by a limited array of tools. Both transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and virtual reality (VR) training have demonstrated efficacy in improving cognitive performance among PSCI patients. Previous findings across various conditions suggest that implementing a therapeutic protocol combining tDCS and VR (tDCS - VR) may yield superior in isolation. Despite this, to our knowledge, no clinical investigation combining tDCS and VR for PSCI rehabilitation has been conducted. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore the effects of tDCS - VR on PSCI rehabilitation. METHODS: This 4-week, single-center randomized clinical trial protocol will recruit 200 patients who were randomly assigned to one of four groups: Group A (tDCS + VR), Group B (tDCS + sham VR), Group C (sham tDCS + VR), Group D (sham tDCS + sham VR). All four groups will receive conventional cognitive rehabilitation training. The primary outcome measurement utilizes the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Secondary outcome measures include the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Frontal Assessment Battery, Clock Drawing Test, Digital Span Test, Logic Memory Test, and Modified Barthel Index. Additionally, S-YYZ-01 apparatus for diagnosis and treating language disorders assesses subjects' speech function. Pre- and post-four-week intervention assessments are conducted for all outcome measures. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is employed to observe changes in oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO), deoxy-hemoglobin (HbR), and total hemoglobin (HbT) in the cerebral cortex. DISCUSSION: Our hypothesis posits that the tDCS - VR therapy, in opposed to individual tDCS or VR interventions, could enhance cognitive function, speech ability and daily living skills in PSCI patients while concurrently augmenting frontal cortical activity. This randomized study aims to provide a robust theoretical foundation supported by scientific evidence for the practical implementation of the tDCS - VR combination as a secure and efficient PSCI rehabilitation approach. Utilizing deep features from electroencephalography (EEG) data for emotional music composition provides a novel approach for creating personalized and emotionally rich music. Compared to textual data, converting continuous EEG and music data into discrete units presents significant challenges, particularly the lack of a clear and fixed vocabulary for standardizing EEG and audio data. The lack of this standard makes the mapping relationship between EEG signals and musical elements (such as rhythm, melody, and emotion) blurry and complex. Therefore, we propose a method of using clustering to create discrete representations and using the Transformer model to reverse mapping relationships. Specifically, the model uses clustering labels to segment signals and independently encodes EEG and emotional music data to construct a vocabulary, thereby achieving discrete representation. A time series dictionary was developed using clustering algorithms, which more effectively captures and utilizes the temporal and structural relationships between EEG and audio data. In response to the insensitivity to temporal information in heterogeneous data, we adopted a multi head attention mechanism and positional encoding technology to enable the model to focus on information in different subspaces, thereby enhancing the understanding of the complex internal structure of EEG and audio data. In addition, to address the mismatch between local and global information in emotion driven music generation, we introduce an audio masking prediction loss learning method. Our method generates music that Hits@20 On the indicator, a performance of 68.19% was achieved, which improved the score by 4.9% compared to other methods, indicating the effectiveness of this method.

Endometriosis is a multifactorial gynecological disease, with angiogenesis as a key hallmark. The role of exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) in endometriosis is not well understood. This study investigates differentially expressed exosomal miRNAs linked to angiogenesis in endometriosis, clarifies their molecular mechanisms, and identifies potential targets. Primary endometrial stromal cells (ESCs) were cultured, and exosomes were extracted. In a co-culture system, ESC-derived exosomes were taken up by human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Endometriosis implant-ESC-derived exosomes (EI-EXOs) significantly promoted HUVEC proliferation, migration and tube formation compared to normal endometrium-exosomes (NE-EXOs), a finding consistent in vivo in mice. MiRNA sequencing and bioinformatics identified differentially expressed miR-21-5p from EI-EXOs, confirmed by RT-qPCR. The miR-21-5p inhibitor or GW4869 attenuated EI-EXO-induced HUVEC proliferation, migration, and tube formation. TIMP3 overexpression diminished the pro-angiogenic effect of EI-EXOs, which was reversed by adding EI-EXOs or upregulating miR-21-5p. These findings validate the crosstalk between ESCs and HUVECs mediated by exosomal miR-21-5p, and confirm the miR-21-5p-TIMP3 axis in promoting angiogenesis in endometriosis. KEY MESSAGES: ESC-derived exosomes were found to be taken up by recipient cells, i.e. HUVECs. Functionally, endometriosis implant-ESC-derived exosomes (EI-EXOs) could significantly promote the proliferation, migration and tube formation of HUVECs compared to normal endometrium-exosomes (NE-EXOs). Through miRNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis, differentially expressed miR-21-5p released by EI-EXOs was chosen, as confirmed by qRT-PCR. miR-21-5p inhibitor or GW4869 was found to attenuate the proliferation, migration, and tube formation of HUVECs induced by EI-EXOs. In turn, TIMP3 overexpression diminished the pro-angiogenic effect of EI-EXOs, and this angiogenic phenotype was reversed once EI-EXOs were added or miR-21-5p was upregulated.

Solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors are in great demand for both military and civilian applications. Here, we have successfully demonstrated the synthesis of the Sn-doped Ga2O3 films with controllable bandgaps to construct PdSe2/Ga2O3 van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions achieving highly sensitive full solar-blind UV spectrum detection. The assembled device demonstrates a full solar-blind UV spectral self-powered response, with a large responsivity of 123.5 mA/W, a high specific detectivity of 1.63 × 1013 Jones, and a rapid response time of 0.15/2.3 ms. Importantly, an outstanding solar-blind UV imaging application based on an integrated PdSe2/Ga2O3 device array has been demonstrated. Our work paves a feasible path toward achieving highly sensitive solar-blind UV detecting and imaging based on wide-bandgap Ga2O3 films.

Patient-derived organoids (PDOs) have been proposed as a novel in vitro tumor model that can be applied to tumor research and drug screening. However, current tumor organoid models lack components of the tumor microenvironment, particularly tumor-associated macrophages(TAMs).We collected peripheral blood and tumor samples from 6 patients with extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(eCCA). Monocytes were induced into TAMs by cytokine and conditioned medium, and then co-cultured with tumor organoids. Our comprehensive analysis and comparison of histopathology and genomics results confirmed that this co-culture model can better capture intra- and inter-tumor heterogeneity retain the specific mutations of the original tumor. Drug sensitivity data in vitro revealed that gemcitabine and cisplatin are effective drugs for cholangiocarcinoma, but TAMs in the tumor microenvironment promote organoids growth and chemotherapy resistance. In conclusion, our organoid model of cholangiocarcinoma co-cultured with TAMs can not only shorten the model construction cycle, but also preserve the heterogeneity of original tumors to improve the accuracy of drug screening, and can also be applied to the researches of TAMs and tumors.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term microtensile bond strength (µTBS) to dentin, water sorption (WSP) and solubility (WSL), and degree of conversion (DC) of self-adhesive resin composites (SACs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mid-coronal dentin of human molars was exposed, and teeth were randomly assigned to five groups according to the SACs (n = 10): 1. FIT SA F03 (FIT); 2. Experimental (EXP); 3. Fusio Liquid Dentin (FLD); 4. Vertise Flow (VER); 5. Constic (CON). The µTBS was evaluated after 24 hours (24 h) and 6 months (6 m) storage. A scanning electron microscope examined failure modes and resin-dentin interfaces. The WSP and WSL (n = 5) were evaluated following ISO 4049:2019 specifications, and DC (n = 3) was measured using Raman spectroscopy. The statistical analyses were performed accepting a significance level of p = 0.05. RESULTS: FIT, EXP, and FLD produced significantly higher µTBS median values than VER and CON after 24 h and 6 m (p 0.05). After 6m, the µTBS median of FIT and EXP significantly decreased (p 0.05), while FLD, VER, and CON showed no significant difference (p > 0.05). FLD and CON exhibited lower WSP than FIT, EXP, and VER (p 0.05). FLD presented the lowest (p 0.05), and VER revealed the highest WSL (p 0.05). FIT and EXP showed the highest (p 0.05), and VER demonstrated the lowest DC (p 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Following the present study's design, SACs' bonding performance and physical properties remained restricted. Therefore, the application should be considered cautiously, and further clinical trials are necessary to evaluate their long-term performance.

Probiotic oral therapy has been recognised as an effective treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the efficacy of probiotics is often diminished due to their limited resistance to harsh gastrointestinal conditions. Therefore, the importance of designing innovative strategies for oral probiotic delivery for the effective treatment of IBD is increasingly recognised. In this study, we present a novel encapsulation strategy of Lactobacillus plantarum (L.P) using the dual-layer system consisting of a tannic acid­calcium network and polysaccharide coating (gellan gum-tamarind gum) named L.P-C/T-G/T. This double-layer encapsulation system not only does not affect the normal proliferation of probiotics and provide protection, but also endows probiotics with more functions. More specifically, the acid resistance ability of the encapsulated probiotics is increased by 10 times, the free radical scavenging rate is enhanced by 5 times, and the intestinal retention time can be prolonged by 6-12 h. In the DSS-induced murine colitis model, it significantly alleviated colon shortening, inhibited ROS overexpression, and promoted the repair and regeneration of the mucus layer. This dual-layer encapsulation approach for a single probiotic demonstrates a significant advancement in probiotic delivery technology, offering hope for a comprehensive approach to the treatment of colitis and potentially other gastrointestinal disorders.

Some cases of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) require surgical treatment and postoperative nasal packing, but bleeding and adhesion are common complications after nasal surgery. Biodegradable drug-loaded implants hold great therapeutic options for the treatment of CRS, but little data are available regarding the safety and efficacy of a novel drug-loaded haemostatic sponge (DLHS) in the sinus. The aim of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of DLHS in the sinus. We conducted a prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial. In this clinical trial, 49 patients were enrolled and randomly divided into 2 groups: group A (n = 25) had the DLHS containing 1 mg budesonide and 0.67 mg sodium hyaluronate placed into the sinus, and group B (n = 24) had the Nasopore placed after ESS. Endoscopic follow-up was performed for 12 weeks, and the findings were classified using the discharge, inflammation, polyps/oedema (DIP) endoscopic appearance scores. All patients completed questionnaires to evaluate their sinonasal symptoms by using the sinonasal outcome test-22 (SNOT-22) Chinese version and visual analogue scale (VAS). Serum cortisol concentration in group A was measured prior to surgery and at days 1, 3, 7, and 14 after nasal surgery. Comparing group A and group B, at 2 weeks, no significant differences were observed in either objective or subjective parameters. The mean value of VAS for rhinorrhoea and DIP for oedema and the mean value of nasal adhesion were significantly lower in Group A than in Group B at 6 and 12 weeks, but a significant difference did not occur in SNOT-22 and VAS for dysosmia between the two groups at 6 and 12 weeks. The mean serum cortisol concentrations in group A at the follow-up were within normal limits without remarkable fluctuations. This study demonstrates the safety and efficacy of a novel biodegradable DLHS with the possibility of being used in CRS patients, and this sponge may reduce inflammation and minimize adhesions via controlled local drug delivery without measurable systemic exposure.

Introduction: This research explores the intricate interplay among teacher-student relationships, perceived autonomy support, peer relationships, and their collective impact on the psychological well-being of 387 university students enrolled in French language courses across diverse academic institutions in China. Methods: Employing Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), this study aims to establish the validity and robustness of the proposed model. Data collection involved online surveys utilizing Likert scales and standardized measures to assess variables concerning educational relationships and psychological well-being. Results: The findings reveal significant associations between teacher-student relationships, autonomy support, positive peer relationships, and psychological well-being. Importantly, analyses demonstrate the influential role of positive peer relationships in mediating the effects of teacher-student relationships and autonomy support on students' psychological well-being. Discussion: These outcomes emphasize the crucial significance of educational relationships in shaping students' psychological well-being within academic settings. The findings contribute to understanding the nuanced dynamics of educational interactions and their profound implications for student well-being. This highlights the necessity of cultivating positive educational environments for enhanced student mental health.

Introduction: Despite rapid advances in molecular biology, personalized molecular therapy remains a clinical challenge for endometrial cancer due to its complex and heterogeneous tumor microenvironment.Based on clinical findings, AIB1 is a marker molecule for poor prognosis in endometrial cancer and may serve as a potential therapeutic target. Moreover, it is well known that aerobic glycolysis plays an important role in tumour energy metabolism. It has been previously reported in various hormone-related tumour studies that AIB1 affects glycolysis and promotes tumour development. However, the link between AIB1 and aerobic glycolysis in estrogen-dependent endometrial cancer remains unclear. Methods: We used two endometrial cancer cell lines to validate the high expression of target genes and the effect on the proliferative and invasive capacity of the tumours and verified the pattern of interactions and epigenetic modifications by CHIP and CO-IP techniques. Finally, the conclusions were validated on homozygous mice. Results: In this study, we investigated the transcriptional co-activation functions of AIB1, including its acetylation by PCAF, binding to the c-myc transcription factor, and recruitment of glycolysis-related gene promoters. Discussion: Our findings provide new clues that perturbation of normal homeostatic levels of AIB1 is linked with endometrial cancer. These findings suggest that targeting AIB1-mediated regulation of aerobic glycolysis may offer a novel therapeutic approach for endometrial cancer with high AIB1 expression, opening new avenues for personalized diagnostics and treatment strategies in this disease.

Thiophenol (PhSH) is an important industrial intermediate but displays significant toxicity towards environmental and biological systems. Here, we introduce a supramolecular system based on ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD) and boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) as a ratiometric fluorescence probe to discriminate PhSH in environmental water samples, cells, and in vivo. In aqueous solutions, BODIPY shows extremely weak fluorescence intensity due to its aggregation into nanometer-sized clusters, which prevents its interaction with thiols. However, within a ß-CD environment, it can selectively and sensitively detect PhSH. Also, the stability of the probe was significantly improved. The mechanism studies based on stoichiometry, NMR spectroscopy, and theoretical calculation revealed distinct intermolecular interactions between ß-CD and BODIPY, including host-guest interactions and hydrogen bonds. Low limit of detection (10.7 nM) and rapid response time (5 min) have been achieved, and the practicality of the supramolecular system (BODIPY@ß-CD) has been verified by actual sample analysis. Furthermore, the first hydrogel-based sensing system for portable PhSH detection has been developed, facilitating rapid and on-site colorimetric visualization across both liquid and gas phases. Most importantly, using a low amount of the probe, early stages of low-dose exposure to PhSH can be visualized in living cells and zebrafish. Therefore, BODIPY@ß-CD is a robust new monitoring tool for the detection of PhSH in various scenarios, indicating the promising application value of the host-guest supramolecular probe in detecting highly toxic substances.

Whether earthworm mucus affects Cd transport behavior in soil-plant systems remains uncertain. Consequently, this study thoroughly assessed the impacts of earthworm mucus on plant growth and physiological responses, plant Cd accumulation, translocation, and distribution, as well as soil characteristics and Cd fractionation in a soil-plant (tomato seedling) system. Results demonstrated that the earthworm inoculation considerably enhanced plant Cd uptake and decreased plant Cd translocation, the effects of which were appreciably less significant than those of the earthworm mucus. This suggested that earthworm mucus may play a crucial role in the way earthworms influence plant Cd uptake and translocation. Moreover, the artificial mucus, which contained identical inorganic nitrogen contents to those in earthworm mucus, had no significant effect on plant Cd accumulation or translocation, implying that components other than inorganic nitrogen in the earthworm mucus may have contributed significantly to the overall effects of the mucus. Compared with the control, the earthworm mucus most substantially increased the root Cd content, the Cd accumulation amount of root and whole plant, and root Cd BCF by 93.7 %, 221.3 %, 72.2 %, and 93.7 %, respectively, while notably reducing the Cd TF by 48.2 %, which may be ascribed to the earthworm mucus's significant impacts on tomato seedling growth and physiological indicators, its considerable influences on the subcellular components and chemical species of root Cd, and its substantial effects on the soil characteristics and soil Cd fractionation, as revealed by correlation analysis. Redundancy analysis further suggested that the most prominent impacts of earthworm mucus may have been due to its considerable reduction of soil pH, improvement of soil DOC content, and enhancement of the exchangeable Cd fraction in soil. This work may help better understand how earthworm mucus influences the transport behavior of metals in soil-plant systems.

The primary driver of increasing atmospheric concentrations of nitrous oxide (N2O) is the use of organic and synthetic fertilizer to increase agricultural crop production. Current global estimates are based on IPCC N2O emission factor (EF) calculations, although there are shortcomings as many of the N2O EFs are derived from measurements during the cropping season. These neglect the fallow season, and do not adequately account for double or even triple cropping systems or legacy effects on soil N2O emissions in the following year. In this study, we assessed the legacy effect of fertilization on soil N2O fluxes using data from a long-term double-cropping field experiment with summer maize and winter wheat in rotation, in which no nitrogen (N; NN) and balanced manure with synthetic N (MN) fertilized treatments were switched to allow an assessment of legacy effects. Based on high-frequency measurements of N2O and previous data, we calculated that the historical N fertilization, or legacy effect, explained 23 % of the annual flux of 0.81 kg N ha-1 yr-1 in the first season of observation. In the following three seasons, the legacy effect of the previous N fertilization regime decreased to a negligible level, with N2O emissions mainly driven by in-season fertilization. Our data show that, on average, the seasonal EF for N2O was about 0.11 % higher in response to the previous N fertilization. Our study indicates that the current N2O EF may severely underestimate emissions because studies ignore legacy effects on N2O emissions from zero N plots and only compare zero N with N fertilization treatments for a given season or year to derive seasonal or annual N2O EF.

Imide functionalization has been widely proved to be an effective approach to enrich optoelectronic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, appending multiple imide groups onto linear acenes is still a synthetic challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that by taking advantage of a "breaking and mending" strategy, a linear pentacene tetraimides (PeTI) was synthesized through a three-step sequence started from the naphthalene diimides (NDI). Compared with the parent pentacene, PeTI shows a deeper-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, narrower bandgap and better stability. The redox behavior of PeTI was firstly evaluated by generating a stable radical anion specie with the assistance of cobaltocene (CoCp2), and the structure of the electron transfer (ET) complex was confirmed by the X-ray crystallography. Moreover, due to the presence of multiple redox-active sites, we are able to show that the state-of-the-art energy storage performance of the dealkylated PeTI (designated as PeTCTI) in organic potassium ion batteries (OPIBs) as an anode. Our results shed light on the application of multiple imides functionalized linear acenes, and the reported synthetic strategy provides an effective way to get access to longer nanoribbon imides with fascinating electronic properties.
