Endometriosis (EM) is a gynecological disorder that presents significant immune dysregulation in its pathophysiology. Recent studies indicate that the Complement System may play a significant role in the immune processes involved in peritoneal clearance and inflammation in EM patients. C5a is a potent anaphylatoxin molecule of complement associated with the development of inflammatory disorders, however its possible impact on EM development requires further investigation. The aim of this study was to determine the concentration of serum C5a in women with EM and to investigate its possible association with severity, symptoms, age and the timing of infertility. Ninety-four patients with EM (from stage I to IV) and 50 healthy controls were assessed for C5a serum levels. Clinical and demographic data were included in the analysis. C5a serum levels were higher in patients with EM than in controls (39.5 ng/mL vs. 26.0 ng/mL; p < .0001), but not different between the EM stages. No association was observed between C5a serum concentration and the presence of symptoms, age, symptom time or infertility time. The C5a serum levels were higher in patients with EM than in controls but not associated with the severity or clinical findings.

Objectives The present study aims to categorize the prevalence of intracranial tumors surgically treated at the neurosurgery service of Hospital Universitário Evangélico Mackenzie (HUEM) between 2016 and 2018. Material and Methods This survey included patients surgically treated due to primary or metastatic intracranial neoplasia between 2016 and 2018 at a referral center in the city of Curitiba. These patients were analyzed for epidemiological, histopathological, and topographic data, and they underwent an assessment of the outcome at the time of hospital discharge. Results Atotal of 96patientsmet the inclusion criteria. Themost prevalent tumorwas the glioma, with 39.6% of the sample, with glioblastoma being themost prevalent histological type. Brainmetastases andmeningiomas represented, respectively, 21.9%and 18.8%of the total. There was a predominance of supratentorial and intra-axial tumors in our sample. Conclusion Glioma was the most commonly found tumor, directly associated with high morbidity and mortality. The development of new and more effective drugs with action directed at themolecular level of intracranial tumorsmay be the path to a longer survival and improvement in the quality of life of these patients.

Markers of autoimmunity, such as autoantibodies, have been found in patients with endometriosis. These include the antinuclear antibodies (ANA). We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of ANA in a sample of patients with endometriosis and its possible clinical associations. Ninety-four patients with endometriosis and 91 controls were studied for ANA and extractable nuclear antigen (ENA; anti-Ro, anti-La, anti-Sm, and anti-RNP) profiles and anti-dsDNA. Epidemiological, clinical, and staging data in endometriosis were obtained. Patients with autoimmune disorders were excluded. Patients with endometriosis had a 21.2% prevalence of positive ANA vs. 5.4% in controls (P = 0.001). The ENA profile and anti-dsDNA were negative. Patients with positive ANA were more asymptomatic (P = 0.03) and had less dysmenorrhea. No associations with disease duration, patient age, or endometriosis stage were found. We found a high prevalence of positive ANA in patients with endometriosis. The presence of this autoantibody may be linked to a milder clinical expression of the disease.
