RESUMO
A great number of free radicals have a negative impact on the human body, and an increased interest in the identification of new natural molecules with antioxidant properties has emerged due to concerns about synthetic antioxidants. Here, the antioxidant effect of four exo-polysaccharides (EPS) extracts obtained from submerged cultivation of Nothophellinus andinopatagonicus and Pseudoinonotus crustosus (N and P, respectively) in two culture media (M1 and M2) at 2 concentrations (100 and 250 µg/ml) was studied; then, its relation with the chemical composition of the EPS was evaluated. To assess the antioxidant activities of the extracts, several in vitro assays were performed: DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging, ferric-reducing antioxidant power, chelating ability on ferrous ions, and inhibition of the lipid peroxidation. The concentrations tested here were much lower than those reported in previous works. Despite variations in chemical composition and monosaccharide profiles among the extracts, all demonstrated antioxidant activity, although the type of activity differed; only P-M1 exhibited a good antioxidant activity across all assays. This extract contained the highest proportion of phenolic compounds, and also displayed the highest radical scavenging activity. Although the utilization of polysaccharides as functional food ingredients remains limited, we propose P-M1 as a promising candidate for a nutraceutical product. Additionally, a formulation could be made with a combination of extracts to create an antioxidant-rich supplement. Additional research is needed to confirm our findings in a cellular environment and to elucidate the mechanisms that drive their antioxidant activities, ultimately facilitating their development and utilization as nutraceutical products.

Rectal swabs (122) from pediatric patients were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of EPEC and STEC. STEC isolates were tested for the presence of stx1, stx2, eae, saa and ehxA. All eae-positive samples were tested for the presence of bfpA, and antigen O was determined using the agglutination test. Int1 and Int2 were detected to identify the presence of integrons class 1 and 2, respectively. Escherichia coli was detected in 68% of the samples, of which 18.8% were STEC (2.45%) and EPEC (16.3%). Serogroups STEC O145 and EPEC O130, O113 and O157 were observed, while three strains were non-typable. None of the EPEC strains carrying tbfpA and class 1 and 2 integrons was detected in any of the samples. The results obtained are important considering the virulence profiles found in the isolated EPEC and STEC strains and the serogroups associated with disease in humans.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are recognized as being responsible for many cases of foodborne diseases worldwide. Cattle are the main reservoir of STEC, shedding the microorganisms in their feces. The serogroup STEC O91 has been associated with hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Locus of Adhesion and Autoaggregation (LAA) and its hes gene are related to the pathogenicity of STEC and the ability to form biofilms. Considering the frequent isolation of STEC O91, the biofilm-forming ability, and the possible role of hes in the pathogenicity of STEC, we propose to evaluate the ability of STEC to form biofilms and to evaluate the expression of hes before and after of biofilm formation. All strains were classified as strong biofilm-forming. The hes expression showed variability between strains before and after biofilm formation, and this may be due to other genes carried by each strain. This study is the first to report the relationship between biofilm formation, and hes expression and proposes that the analysis and diagnosis of LAA, especially hes as STEC O91 virulence factors, could elucidate these unknown mechanisms. Considering that there is no specific treatment for HUS, only supportive care, it is necessary to know the survival and virulence mechanisms of STEC O91.

Abstract Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is an autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by alterations in the catabolism of chylomicrons and by increased levels of plasma triglycerides. It has been shown that about 60-90% of FCS patients have biallelic mutations in the LPL gene and the remaining patients have mutations in genes encoding proteins closely related to LPL function. The objective of this manuscript is to illustrate the different clinical scenarios of FCS presentation, and to guide practitioners on the usefulness of genetic tests in each of them. To this end, several published papers about recommendations for the diagnosis of FCS are discussed briefly, in addition to the presentation of several hypothetical cases, highlighting different clinical presentations and possible associated genetic findings. These cases illustrate the multiplicity of potential aspects of family history, clinical manifestations, biochemical parameters, and patterns of genetic variants found in genomic analyses of FCS.
RESUMO
Background: Color-coded duplex sonography (CCDS) is a widely proposed noninvasive diagnostic tool in microsurgery. CCDS has been applied to lower extremity salvage cases to define appropriate blood flow velocity criteria for achieving arterial success in diabetic foot and complex microsurgery cases. This study aimed to compare the success ratio of free flaps when using CCDS versus cases where CCDS was not used. Methods: We included complex microsurgery cases from 2019 to 2021. These cases were subsequently categorized into two groups: group A consisted of cases where CCDS parameters were applied, whereas group B comprised cases where CCDS was not performed at all. Results: The study encompassed 14 cases (11 men and three women). The age range varied from 23 to 62 years, with an average age of 42. Using CCDS analysis and planning demonstrated improved outcomes in comparison with cases where CCDS was not performed, albeit without statistical significance (Pâ =â 0.064). Conclusions: The application of CCDS proves to be beneficial in the realm of microsurgery. Although not achieving statistical significance, our data imply that CCDS utilization holds promise for enhancing microsurgical procedures.

Food retail is a component of the food environment that influences food selection and consumption. In recent decades, Mexico has experienced changes in the food environment that coincide with the increase in overweight, obesity, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among its population. The aim of this study was to analyze changes in the density of food retail from 2010 to 2021 in areas of medium and high marginalization in Hermosillo, Sonora, located in the North Pacific region of Mexico, and their association with diet, anthropometry, and adult women's health. Information on food retail was obtained from the National Statistic Directory of Economic Units (DENUE). A sample of 104 adult women was interviewed, and their anthropometric measurements were taken. The findings revealed significant changes in the density of food retail in areas of medium and high marginalization during the study period. The participant's mean age was 47,6±15 years. The prevalence of overweight and obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure was 88%, 20%, and 40%, respectively. The increase in the density of convenience stores was positively associated with women's body mass index, waist circumference, and obesity (β: 3,22; p<0,01; β: 7,70; p<0,01; OR: 3,12; p<0,01). The results demonstrate that the type of establishment where food is purchased is associated with the population's health status.

Introduction In aesthetic surgery, we have a few evaluation tools that numerically and objectively measure the changes we make in patients. This article aimed to evaluate the nasal systematic analysis and compare findings between the three systems of nasal evaluation: photographs 2D, 3D surface imaging with the Kinect system, and 3D CT scan imaging. Methods We designed a longitudinal and descriptive prospective study with simple non-blind randomization. To compare the systematic nasal analysis between the three methods. If the findings are similar, all three methods would be useful in independent clinical scenarios. Results A total of 42 observations were included finding a minimum age of 21 with a mean of 28 years old. Also, 64% were female, 93% had adequate facial proportions, and 50% were Fitzpatrick III. For outcome statistics, we found differential nasal deviation between 3D images with a mean of 6.53 mm. While when comparing the nasal dorsum length, we found a statistical significance of p = 0.051. When comparing the nasal dorsum length index, we found no significant difference p = 0.32. Also, we did not find statistical significance when comparing the nasofrontal angle and tip rotation angle p = 1 for both. Conclusion We found that the population we serve has characteristics of Hispanic mestizo nose. The three methods seem to evaluate systematic nasal analysis in a very similar way, and any of them can be used depending on the scenario and the needs of plastic surgeons.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have a positive effect on plant development and being a promising way to enhance crop productivity and as substitution of chemical fertilizers. Selenium (Se) is an important trace element and its intake is usually lower than the daily minimum amount required for humans; hence, there is a demand on the design of Se biofortification strategies. Here, the genetic traits known to be associated with Plant-Growth Promotion (PGP) and Se biotransformation of Exiguobacterium sp. S17 were evaluated through genome analysis. Its growth-promoting capacity was tested through plant-growth promotion assays in laboratory and field conditions, using Brassica juncea (indian mustard), Beta vulgaris (chard), and Lactuca sativa (lettuce). Additionally, the Se biotransformation ability of Exiguobacterium sp. S17 was evaluated and the obtained selenized bacteria were tested in mustard plants. The sequenced bacteria genome revealed the presence of multiple genes involved in important functions regarding soil and plant colonization, PGP and Se biotransformation. Moreover, it was demonstrated that Exiguobacterium sp. S17 enhanced plant growth and could be useful to produce Se accumulation and biofortification in accumulator plants such as mustard. Thereby, Exiguobacterium sp. S17 might be used for developing new, sustainable, and environmentally friendly agro-technological strategies.

Pinus. ponderosa (P. Lawson and C. Lawson) is a commercial tree and one of the most important forest species in North America. Ponderosa pine suffers hardship when going through vegetative propagation and, in some cases, 15-30 years are needed to achieve full reproductive capacity. Based on previous works on P. ponderosa regeneration through in vitro organogenesis and trying to improve the published protocols, our objective was to analyze the influence of different types of explants, basal culture media, cytokinins, auxins, and light treatments on the success of shoot multiplication and rooting phases. Whole zygotic embryos and 44 µΜ 6-benzyladenine showed the best results in terms of explants survival. For shoot organogenesis, whole zygotic embryos and half LP (LP medium, Quoirin and Lepoivre, 1977, modified by Aitken-Christie et al., 1988) macronutrients were selected. A significant positive interaction between whole zygotic embryos and half LP macronutrients was found for the percentage of explants forming shoots. Regarding the light treatments applied, a significantly higher percentage of shoots elongated enough to be rooted was detected in shoots growing under blue LED at a light intensity of 61.09 µmol m-2 s-1. However, the acclimatization percentage was higher in shoots previously cultivated under fluorescent light at a light intensity of 61.71 µmol m-2 s-1. Anatomical studies using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed the light treatments promoted differences in anatomical aspects in in vitro shoots; needles of plantlets exposed to red and blue LEDs revealed less stomata compared with needles from plantlets exposed to fluorescent light.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the theoretical-methodological contribution of van Kaam's phenomenology to nursing research. METHODS: Theoretical reflection based on scientific literature. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Intentionality emerges as a central concept and the 7 steps of the van Kaam's method modified by Moustakas were developed: horizontalization; reduction and elimination; categorization and thematization of invariant constituents; application and validation; construction of the individual textural description; construction of the individual structural description; and composite description. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: van Kaam's theoretical-methodological framework allows a different look at the phenomenon, since the knowledge produced comes from the textural and structural essence of the lived experience, in a composite description, considering its different perceptive dimensions.

INTRODUCTION: Zone I extensor tendon lesion accompanies an avulsion fracture of the bone insertion. A common complication of traditional pull-out is the necrosis of the site of the button in the finger pad. Zhang described an alternative way of anchoring the cerclage to the Kirschner Wire (K-wire) to relieve the pressure in the finger pad. He describes the use of wire cerclage, for fracture reduction. The objective of this paper is to perform a comparison between wire and nylon using Zhang pull-out technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a cohort study comparing Nylon versus Wire in Zhang technique. Comparing cosmetic satisfaction, stiffness, residual pain, and Crawford scale. RESULTS: When comparing the outcomes between both groups, we found no statistical difference in cosmetic satisfaction (p = 0.285), stiffness (p = 0.460), and residual pain (p =1.000), overall complications (p = 1.000), or Crawford scale (p = 1.000). We only found a significant statistical difference in pain when removing the cerclage, being greater in Group B (p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: We found no significant outcome difference between nylon and wire cerclage. However, at the time of removing it, patients experience less pain.

Introduction: Although informal employment is increasing, there is still little evidence of musculoskeletal symptoms in workers with precarious jobs in marketplaces and of how these symptoms are related to their labor conditions and risks. Objective: To identify sociodemographic and labor conditions and ergonomic risks associated with musculoskeletal symptoms in workers from a marketplace in a Colombian municipality in 2017. Methods: Cross-sectional study of a 2017 census of 194 workers. A survey was applied, and labor and environmental records were collected. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed, with statistical tests with 95% confidence level. Results: Women (56.7%) and workers older than 30 years (75.4%) predominated; 90.7% of participants worked 8 hours a day or more; 52.8% worked from 1 to 5 days a week; and 33.9% had been working in the profession for > 20 years. Moreover, 86.6% had semi-stationary sales position; 43.8% were overweight, and 18.8% obese. Also, 60.6% presented with some type of musculoskeletal symptom, the most prevalent of which was joint pain (37.7%). Selling meat (PRA = 2.36), merchandise/pots (PRA = 1.40), harvest/perishable products (PRA = 1.26), and working from 8 to 11 hours a day (PRA = 1.76) explained higher prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms. Conversely, moving (PAA = 0.5) and lifting (PRA = 0.75) heavy objects explained lower prevalence of these symptoms. Conclusions: Greater musculoskeletal symptoms were related to older age, lower schooling, fewer days of work, working from 8 to 11 hours, and selling meat, merchandise/pots, and harvest/perishable products. These conditions, once identified, will facilitate promotion and prevention actions to improve the living and health conditions of marketplace workers.
RESUMO
Background: Nutrition has an important influence on the risk of developing breast cancer (BC). Dietary patterns can capture the complex interplay of nutrients and cooking methods can contribute to the presence of heterocyclic amines, which are potent mammary carcinogens. Research on dietary patterns, cooking methods, and their association with BC in Mexican women is scarce. Aim: To evaluate the association of dietary patterns and cooking methods with BC risk among women from the Northwest region of Mexico. Methods: This case-control study included 120 women. Eligible cases (n = 60) were diagnosed and biopsy-confirmed in the past 2 years. Control subjects (n = 60) were hospital and population-based. Dietary intake and cooking methods were respectively assessed through a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and the National Cancer Institute survey. We obtained dietary patterns from a K-means cluster analysis (CA), and multivariate logistic regression tested the association of dietary patterns and cooking methods with BC risk. Results: Prudent and caloric dietary patterns were identified. The caloric pattern was associated with BC risk (Model 1: ORadj: 5.07, 95%CI:1.44-17.84, p = 0.011; Model 2: ORadj: 4.99 (95%CI:1.39-17.92, p = 0.014). Intense frying, meat grilling and poultry resulted in a significant BC risk (Model 1: ORadj: 5.54,95%CI: 2.13-14.41), p < 0.001; Model 2: ORadj: 5.12, 95%CI: 1.83-14.31, p = 0.002). At Oestrogen exposure of <32 years, there was an association between dietary patterns and BC risk (ORadj: 4.69, 95%CI: 1.01-21.92, p = 0.049). The relationship between BC risk and cooking intensity was found in both strata of exposure to oestrogens: <32 years (ORadj: 3.72, 95%CI:1.04-13.33, p = 0.044), and ≥32 years (ORadj: 6.06, 95%CI:1.34-27.42, p = 0.019). Conclusions: A caloric dietary pattern rich in refined carbohydrates and saturated fat, and intense meat product cooking may increase the risk of BC in Mexican women.
ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Status migrainosus is a complication of migraine, patients are often hospitalized for diagnostic studies and/or treatment. An alternative for the management, are the outpatient infusion center, minimizing hospital admissions and unnecessary examinations. OBJECTIVE: To determine the therapeutic response and associated factors in patients with migraine status treated in an infusion room. METHODOLOGY: Retrospective cohort study whose population was migraine patients attended in an infusion room between February and August 2019. Information on sociodemographic, clinical, and therapeutic management variables was obtained from the review of medical records. The response was evaluated with an analogous pain scale at the beginning and at the end of the treatment; Those patients with improvement greater than 50 % were considered responders. Predictive factors of therapeutic response were evaluated using logistic regression. RESULTS: 124 patients were included, with an average age of 36 (SD = 12 years), 82.3 % were women. The average duration of the migraine state was 8 (SD = 4 days), 73.4 % of the cases were without aura and 97 (78.2 %) were responders. The predictors of good response were the use of dexamethasone (OR: 4.3) and not using lidocaine (OR: 6.0). CONCLUSIONS: Most of the patients had a good response, which identified the outpatient infusion center as a good alternative to inpatient treatment of headache. In our experience, the steroid constitutes a fundamental part of the management of the status migrainosus once it has been established.

Introduction: Mallet injuries are common and usually treated conservatively. Various systematic reviews have found a lack of evidence regarding the best management, and it is still unclear. Objective: To evaluate the treatment efficacy of Stack Splinting compared to a Kirschner wire immobilization of acute closed mallet finger Doyle I. Methods: From March 2019 to February 2020, 41 patients with acute close mallet finger Doyle I were treated; 19 patients were treated with Kirschner wire and 22 with Stack splinting for a mean of 6 weeks. The average patient age at the time of the injury was 43 years. Results: Twenty-eight males and 13 females were in this study. Among them, 17 patients were injured in the little finger, 15 in the middle finger, and 9 in the ring finger. Twenty-seven of injuries suffered an aggression, 11 from falling, and 3 from sports injuries. All the fingers had typical mallet malformation. Seventeen patients treated with Kirschner wire completed the treatment with full recovery, only 7 patients treated with Stack splint completed the treatment and 15 treated with Stack splint had relapse on mallet injury. Conclusion: Kirschner wire treatment is a simple procedure, and proves in this study that has better results in patients with acute closed mallet finger Doyle I compared to Stack splint.
