BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mood disorder with a high prevalence worldwide that causes disability and, in some cases, suicide. Although environmental factors play a crucial role in this disease, other biological factors may predispose individuals to MDD. Genetic and environmental factors influence mental disorders; therefore, a potential combined effect of MAO-A/MAO-B gene variants may be a target for the study of susceptibility to MDD. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of MAO-A and -B gene variants when combined with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on the susceptibility and severity of symptoms in MDD. METHODS: A case-control study was performed, including 345 individuals, 175 MDD cases and 170 controls. Genotyping was performed using real-time PCR with hydrolysis probes. The analysis of the rs1465107 and rs1799836 gene variants of MAO-A and -B, respectively, was performed either alone or in combination with ACEs on the severity of depression, as determined through specific questionnaires, including DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for MDD. RESULTS: According to individual effects, the presence of ACEs, as well as the allele G of the rs1465107 of MAO-A, is associated with a higher severity of depression, more significantly in females. Furthermore, the allele rs1799836 G of MAO-B was associated with the severity of depression, even after being adjusted by gene variants and ACEs (IRR = 1.67, p = 0.01). In males, the allele rs1799836 G of MAO-B was shown to interact with SNP with ACEs (IRR = 1.70, p < 0.001). According to combined effect analyses, the severity of depression was associated with ACEs when combined with either allele rs1465107 of MAO-A or allele rs17993836 of MAO-B, whereas SNP risk association was influenced by gender. CONCLUSIONS: The severity of depression is related to either individual or combined effects of temperamental traits and genetic susceptibility of specific genes such as MAO-A and MAO-B.

Skeletal muscle (SkM) comprises slow and fast-twitch fibers, which differ in molecular composition, function, and systemic energy consumption. In addition, muscular dystrophies (DM), a group of diverse hereditary diseases, present different patterns of muscle involvement, progression, and severity, suggesting that the regeneration-degeneration process may differ depending on the muscle type. Therefore, the study aimed to explore the expression of proteins involved in the repair process in different muscles at an early stage of muscular dystrophy in the δ-sarcoglycan null mice (Sgcd-null), a limb-girdle muscular dystrophy 2 F model. Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) Staining showed a high number of central nuclei in soleus (Sol), tibialis (Ta), gastrocnemius (Gas), and extensor digitorum longus (Edl) from four months Sgcd-null mice. However, fibrosis, determined by trichrome of Gomori modified staining, was only observed in Sgcd-null Sol. In addition, the number of Type I and II fibers variated differentially in the Sgcd-null muscles vs. wild-type muscles. Besides, the protein expression level of ß-catenin, myomaker, MyoD, and myogenin also presented different expression levels in all the Sgcd-null muscles studied. In summary, our study reveals that muscles with different metabolic characteristics showed distinct expression patterns of proteins involved in the muscle regeneration process. These results could be relevant in designing therapies for genetic and acquired myopathy.

The flavanol (-)-epicatechin has exercise-mimetic properties. Besides, several miRNAs play a role in modulating the adaptation of the muscle to different training protocols. However, notwithstanding all information, few studies aimed to determine if (-)-epicatechin can modify the expression of miRNAs related to skeletal muscle development and regeneration. Mice were treated for fifteen days by oral gavage with the flavanol (-)-epicatechin. After treatment, the quadriceps of the mice was dissected, and total RNA was extracted. The expression level of miR-133, -204, -206, -223, -486, and -491 was analyzed by qRT-PCR. We also used bioinformatic analysis to predict the participation of these miRNAs in different skeletal muscle signal transduction pathways. Additionally, we analyzed the level of the myogenic proteins MyoD and myogenin by Western blot and measured the cross-sectional area of muscle fibers stained with E&H. (-)-Epicatechin upregulated the expression of miR-133, -204, -206, -223, and -491 significantly, which was associated with an increase in the level of the myogenic proteins MyoD and Myogenin and an augment in the fiber size. The bioinformatics analysis showed that the studied miRNAs might participate in different signal transduction pathways related to muscle development and adaptation. Our results showed that (-)-epicatechin upregulated miRNAs that participate in skeletal exercise muscle adaptation, induced muscle hypertrophy, and increased the level of myogenic proteins MyoD and MyoG.

Acute leukemia (AL) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children, and neurological manifestations (NM) are frequent. The objective of this study was to analyze neurological manifestations in children with acute leukemia from cases attended in the last five years at the Centro Médico Nacional "20 de Noviembre". METHODS: Conducting a retrospective and analytical study from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2020 in children with AL classified according to sex, age range and AL type. Participants were grouped according the presence of NM. RESULTS: We analyzed 607 patients: 54.85% boys and 44.14% girls, with a mean age of 7.27 ± 4.54 years. When comparing groups, the NM group was significantly older (p = 0.01), and the highest prevalence was between 6 and 12 years old. ALL was predominant over the other lineages (p ≤ 0.01). The most frequent NM was CNS infiltration, seizures, headache and neuropathy. Death outcomes occurred in 18.7% of children with AML, 11.8% with ALL and 50% with MPAL (p ≤ 0.002). The NM group was associated with higher mortality during a follow-up time of 77.9 ± 49 months (44.4% vs. 8.9% deaths, NM vs. non-NM, respectively; OR = 3.3; 95% CI 2.4 to 4.6; p ≤ 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: ALL was the most prevalent leukemia type. CNS infiltration, seizures, headache, neuropathy and PRES were the most frequent symptoms in the NM group. NM was associated with a higher mortality rate.

A combination of maternal obesity and high-fat diet (HFD) in offspring postnatal life has deleterious effects, and (-)-epicatechin (Epi) treatment can reverse these adverse effects. To investigate whether Epi administration can modify fat mass, muscle mass, and bone mass in male rats descended from obese mothers, fed postnatally on an HFD. Male offspring of mothers fed with control diet formed the control group (C), control group with high-fat diet (CHF), and control group with high-fat diet + epicatechin (CHF + Epi). Male offspring of maternal obesity formed the group with control diet (MO), maternal obesity group with high-fat diet (MOHF), and maternal obesity group with high-fat diet + epicatechin (MOHF + Epi). We measured total fat and weight of visceral adipose tissue by dissection and by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scanning body composition. Epicatechin diminished total and visceral pads fat of male offspring of CHF + Epi and MOHF + Epi groups versus to male offspring of CHF and MOHF groups. Besides, epicatechin increased lean mass in CHF + Epi and MOHF + Epi groups, but these changes were not significant. Total body mineral density of the male offspring of CHF, MOHF, and MOHF + Epi groups was significantly higher versus male offspring of C and MO groups. Obesity programming model plus a high-fat postnatal diet presents higher visceral adipose tissue, decreased lean mass, and modified body mineral density when compared with a direct obesity model and its controls. Epicatechin treatment improved body composition; however, it was not able to induce similar values as presented by the controls.

OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at investigating the changes in serum CypC levels and their relationship with cardiovascular events at 12 months of follow-up in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. METHODS: The study included a total of 125 subjects (40 patients with acute CAD, 40 patients with chronic CAD, and 45 control volunteers) and we analyzed plasma CypC levels from baseline to 6 and 12 months for a better understanding of its behavior in atherosclerosis. RESULTS: Serum CypC levels were shown to be gradually increased in CAD patients (30.63 pg/mL ± 3.77 at baseline, 38.70 pg/mL ± 6.41 at 6 months [p = 0.25], and 47.27 pg/mL ± 5.65 at 12 months [p = 0.007]). In addition, serum CypC levels during the follow-up were a significant predictor of CAD (c-statistic 0.76 at 6 months and 0.89 at 12 months; p < 0.001). Despite it, there was no significant association between CypC and cardiovascular events, but serum CypC levels tended to be higher in patients suffering cardiovascular events during the follow-up (29.02 pg/mL ± 6.39 vs. 79.96 pg/mL ± 22.18; p = 0.029). In this regard, plasma levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) > 2.3 mg/L plus NT-proBNP > 300 pg/mL together were significant predictors of cardiovascular events during the follow-up in CAD patients with CypC levels >17.5 pg/mL (p = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our results suggest that serum CypC levels increase during the follow-up in CAD patients and could be a novel biomarker with a possible prognostic value in combination with hsCRP and NT-proBNP.
OBJETIVO: Este estudio tiene como objetivo investigar los cambios en los niveles séricos de CypC y su relación con eventos cardiovasculares a los 12 meses de seguimiento en pacientes con EAC. MÉTODO: El estudio incluyó un total de 125 sujetos (40 pacientes con EAC aguda, 40 pacientes con EAC crónica y 45 voluntarios de control) y se analizaron los niveles plasmáticos de CypC desde el inicio hasta los 6 y 12 meses para comprender mejor su comportamiento en la aterosclerosis. RESULTADOS: Se demostró que los niveles séricos de CypC aumentaron gradualmente en pacientes con CAD [(30.63 pg/ml ± 3.77 al inicio del estudio, 38.70 pg/ml ± 6.41 a los 6 meses (p = 0.25) y 47.27 pg/ml ± 5.65 a los 12 meses (p = 0,007)]. Además, los niveles séricos de CypC durante el seguimiento fueron un predictor significativo de EAC (estadístico c 0.76 a los 6 meses y 0.89 a los 12 meses; p < 0.001). A pesar de ello, no hubo asociación significativa entre CypC y eventos cardiovasculares, pero los niveles séricos de CypC tendieron a ser más altos en los pacientes que sufrieron eventos cardiovasculares durante el seguimiento (29.02 pg/mL ± 6.39 vs. 79.96 pg/mL ± 22.18; p = 0.029). En este sentido, los niveles plasmáticos de hsCRP > 2.3 mg/L más NT-proBNP> 300 pg/ml juntos fueron predictores significativos de eventos cardiovasculares durante el seguimiento en pacientes con EAC con niveles de CypC > 17.5 pg/ml (p = 0.048). CONCLUSIONES: Tomados en conjunto, nuestros resultados sugieren que los niveles séricos de CypC aumentan durante el seguimiento en pacientes con EAC y podría ser un nuevo biomarcador con un posible valor pronóstico en combinación con hsCRP y NT-proBNP.

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of leptin (LEP) and its receptor (LEPR) in breast cancer tissue of postmenopausal women with different body mass indexes (BMI), as well as the relationship of this expression with the rate of recurrence free survival (RFS). Leptin and LEPR expression, determined by immunohistochemistry, were studied in breast cancer tissues of 154 patients. Qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of protein expression was performed by the H-Score method, through the ImageJ's IHC Profiler software. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log-rank statistic were used to estimate RFS differences. Protein expression of LEP, was significantly higher in women with overweight or with obesity, when compared to women with normal BMI (P = 0.032 and P = 0.013, respectively). We also observed a significantly higher expression of LEPR in breast tumor cells of women with obesity (58.8%), when compared to women with normal BMI (32.7%) (P = 0.007). Five-year survival rate, regarding LEPR expression, was 82.4% when positive and 94% when negative (P = 0.024). In the Cox proportional-hazards regression model, LEPR expression represented a risk factor for disease recurrence after adjustment for confounding factors (HR = 4.67; 95% CI: 1.13-19.31; P = 0.033). In conclusion, postmenopausal women with obesity and breast cancer present higher LEP and LEPR expression in breast tumors, when compared to women with normal BMI. Independently from BMI, women with tumors LEPR positive have worst RFS, when compared to women with tumors LEPR negative.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the epidemiology of sarcoidosis in Puerto Rico. METHODS: Patients with a diagnosis of sarcoidosis between January 2015 and December 2018 were selected from the Puerto Rico Health Insurance Administration Administración de Seguros de Salud de Puerto Rico claims database. The International Classification of Diseases-Tenth Revision coding for sarcoidosis was used for case detection and utilization of health care services. Cases by sex and age were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 488 individuals with sarcoidosis were identified over the 4-year study. The median age at diagnosis was 59 years old. The average annual incidence rate was 9.9/100,000. The baseline prevalence was 14.9 per 100,000. Females represented 68.4% of the cases. Patients with lung and unspecified sarcoidosis predominate with 45.6% and 28.2% of cases, respectively. Overall, the yearly cost of health care utilization and medications per patient was $234 and $13,638, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Annual incidence rate and the median age of sarcoidosis in Puerto Ricans are among the highest and oldest reported globally. The demographic profile of sarcoidosis in Puerto Rico presents a patient in the mid-to advanced age, mostly female. While costs for medications were relatively high for a patient with sarcoidosis, the economic burden of the disease to the national health care system is not substantial.

We analyzed the neurological manifestations in Mexican patients hospitalized with pneumonia due to COVID-19 and investigated the association between demographic, clinical, and biochemical variables and outcomes, including death. A retrospective, analytical study was conducted using the electronic records of patients hospitalized between 1 April 2020 and 30 September 2020. Records of 1040 patients were analyzed: 31.25% died and 79.42% had neurological symptoms, including headache (80.62%), anosmia (32.20%), ageusia (31.96%), myopathy (28.08%), disorientation (14.89%), encephalopathy (12.22%), neuropathy (5.4%), stroke (1.3%), seizures (1.3%), cerebral hemorrhage (1.08%), encephalitis (0.84%), central venous thrombosis (0.36%), and subarachnoid hemorrhage (0.24%). Patients also had comorbidities, such as hypertension (42.30%), diabetes mellitus (38.74%), obesity (61.34%), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (3.17%), and asthma (2.01%). Factors associated with neurological symptoms were dyspnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, advanced respiratory support, prolonged hospitalization, and worsening fibrinogen levels. Factors associated with death were older age, advanced respiratory support, amine management, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, intensive care unit management, dyspnea, disorientation, encephalopathy, hypertension, neuropathy, diabetes, male sex, three or more neurological symptoms, and obesity grade 3. In this study we designed a profile to help predict patients at higher risk of developing neurological complications and death following COVID-19 infection.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease in which non-motor symptoms may appear before motor phenomena, which include Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs). The objective of this study is to identify factors associated with the development of ICDs in PD. An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted using clinical records from patients diagnosed with PD, both genders, from 40 to 80 years old. Clinical and demographic data were collected: 181 patients were recruited; 80 of them showed PD and ICDs, and they constituted the study group, whereas 101 patients with PD without ICDs constituted the control reference group. The duration of PD was longer in the group with ICDs (p < 0.008), and all patients showed at least one ICD: binge eating (61.29%), compulsive shopping (48.75%), hypersexuality (23.75%), gambling behavior (8.75%), and punding (3.75%). After logistic regression analysis, only the use of dopamine agonists remained associated with ICDs (p < 0.001), and the tremorgenic form was suggested to be a protective factor (p < 0.001). Positive associations were observed between the rigid-akinetic form and compulsive shopping (p < 0.007), between male and hypersexuality (p < 0.018), and between dopamine agonists and compulsive shopping (p < 0.004), and negative associations were observed between motor fluctuations and compulsive shopping (p < 0.031), between Deep Brain Stimulation and binge eating (p < 0.046), and between levodopa consumption and binge eating (p < 0.045). Binge eating, compulsive shopping, and hypersexuality were the most frequent ICDs. Complex forms and motor complications of PD were associated with the development of ICDs.

BACKGROUND: Obesity protects against bone loss, but it increases the risk of fragility fractures. AIM: To determine if bone mineral density (BMD) and the prevalence of fractures are different in postmenopausal Maya-Mestizo women grouped according to their body mass index (BMI). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We studied 600 postmenopausal Maya-Mestizo women. A structured questionnaire for risk factors was applied. Body mass index was determined. BMD was assessed at the lumbar spine and total hip by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. History of low trauma fracture was determined from medical records. ANOVA was used to compare mean BMD between women with different BMI. To compare the frequency of fractures according to BMI group, we used χ2 test. RESULTS: According to WHO classification of BMI, 16.3% of women had normal BMI, 35.3% were overweight, and 48.4% had obesity. We found that women with obesity had a higher BMD versus women with normal BMI or overweight in all the anatomical sites analysed. The prevalence of history of fractures was 18.2%. We did not find differences between the women of different BMI; the wrist was the most frequent skeletal site of the fracture. CONCLUSION: Obesity in postmenopausal Maya-Mestizo women is not a risk factor for developing fragility fractures.

AIM: To analyse the expression of adiponectin (ADIPOQ), and its receptors ADIPOR1 and ADIPOR2, in breast cancer tissue of postmenopausal women with different body mass indexes (BMIs). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: One hundred and fifty postmenopausal Mexican-Mestizo women with breast cancer were included. BMI was determined in each case. To carry out qualitative and semiquantitative assessments of protein expression by immunohistochemistry, the H-Score method was used, through ImageJ's IHC Profiler software. Statistical power of the study was >80% with a p<0.05. RESULTS: Fifty women had a normal BMI, 50 presented overweight and 50 had obesity. The expression of ADIPOQ in breast cancer tissue of postmenopausal woman with normal BMI was higher in comparison to women with overweight or with obesity (p=0.002 and p<0.001, respectively). Furthermore, the expression of ADIPOR1 in breast cancer tissue of postmenopausal women with normal BMI was significantly lower when compared with women with overweight or with obesity (p=0.005 and p<0.001, respectively). Meanwhile, the expression of ADIPOR2 in breast cancer tissue, in the cytoplasm, was similar in all groups studied. CONCLUSIONS: We found that women with overweight or obesity had a lower expression of ADIPOQ and a higher ADIPOR1 expression in breast cancer tissue, when compared with women with a normal BMI.

RESUMEN Objetivo. Determinar las pérdidas económicas producidas por el decomiso de hígados afectados y la prevalencia de Fasciola hepatica en bovinos sacrificados en las provincias de Holguín y Camagüey, Cuba. Materiales y m étodos. Fueron utilizados los resultados del diagnóstico anatomopatológico realizado en los mataderos Felipe Fuentes y César Escalante durante el periodo comprendido entre enero de 2012 y diciembre de 2018. A partir de la cantidad de animales sacrificados y los afectados se calcularon las pérdidas que alcanzaron un valor de $80.312 USD (Holguín) y $32.7152 USD (Camagüey) para todo el período. Se realizaron análisis de comparación de proporciones para los animales afectados por F. hepatica y las pérdidas económicas por decomiso de hígados, mediante una prueba Chi-cuadrado para determinar la existencia o no de diferencias significativas entre las proporciones y un análisis de medias (ANOM) para determinar cuáles proporciones son significativamente distintas del promedio general. Resultados. Se observó que en 11 meses los animales afectados difirieron significativamente (p<0.001) entre los mataderos excepto en el mes de julio, mientras que las pérdidas totales por decomisos de hígados afectados mostraron diferencias significativas (p<0.001) en todos los meses para el periodo evaluado. Conclusiones. Los mayores valores para las pérdidas económicas y prevalencia por el decomiso de hígados afectados por F. hepatica se presentaron en la provincia de Camagüey lo que pudiera estar relacionado con las condiciones climáticas diferentes, por lo que se recomienda evaluar la dinámica de los hospederos intermedios y las etapas larvarias de este trematodo en las dos provincias estudiadas.
ABSTRACT Objective. To determine the economic losses resulting from condemnation of affected livers and the presence of Fasciola hepatica in slaughtered cattle in the provinces of Camagüey and Holguín, Cuba. Materials and Methods. This study was based on the results from an anatomo-pathological examination performed at Felipe Fuentes and César Escalante slaughterhouses between January 2012 and December 2018. The losses, which totaled $ 80 312 USD (Holguín) and $ 327 152 USD (Camagüey), were estimated from the number of slaughtered and affected animals throughout the period. Analyses for the comparisons of proportions were made to animals affected by F.hepatica, whereas the economic losses due to liver condemnation were analyzed by Chi-square to determine the existence of significant differences among the proportions. Analysis of means (ANOM) was made to determine the significantly different proportions within the general average. Results. Significant differences (p<0.001) were observed in animals from different slaughterhouses in 11 months, excluding July. Meanwhile, the total losses due to condemnation of affected livers underwent significant differences (p<0.001) in all the months of the evaluation period. Conclusions. The highest values of economic losses and prevalence due to condemnation of livers affected by F.hepatica were observed in the province of Camagüey, which may have been linked to varying climatic conditions. Hence, evaluation of intermediary host dynamics and the larval stages of the trematode in the two provinces studied were recommended.

Ursolic and oleanolic acids are natural isomeric triterpenes known for their anticancer activity. Here, we investigated the effect of triterpenes on the viability of A549 human lung cancer cells and the role of autophagy in their activity. The induction of autophagy, the mitochondrial changes and signaling pathway stimulated by triterpenes were systematically explored by confocal microscopy and western blotting. Ursolic and oleanolic acids induce autophagy in A549 cells. Ursolic acid activates AKT/mTOR pathways and oleanolic acid triggers a pathway independent on AKT. Both acids promote many mitochondrial changes, suggesting that mitochondria are targets of autophagy in a process known as mitophagy. The PINK1/Parkin axis is a pathway usually associated with mitophagy, however, the mitophagy induced by ursolic or oleanolic acid is just dependent on PINK1. Moreover, both acids induce an ROS production. The blockage of autophagy with wortmannin is responsible for a decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψ) and cell death. The wortmannin treatment causes an over-increase of p62 and Nrf2 proteins promote a detoxifying effect to rescue cells from the death conducted by ROS. In conclusion, the mitophagy and p62 protein play an important function as a survival mechanism in A549 cells and could be target to therapeutic control.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial and oxidative stress has been related to obesity and breast cancer being this cancer more frequent and more aggressive in postmenopausal women with obesity. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate whether Mexican-Mestizo postmenopausal women with breast cancer and obesity present different somatic mutations in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) when compared to women with normal body mass index (BMI). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We included six Mexican-Mestizo postmenopausal women bearing breast cancer and who underwent mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery. BMI was determined in each case. Patients' genomic DNA was isolated from blood leukocytes and tumor tissue samples. Whole mtDNA sequence was determined by MitoChip v2.0 mitochondrial resequencing array, and data were analyzed using the GeneChip Sequence Analysis Software. Tumor mtDNA sequence was compared with matched leukocyte mtDNA sequence. RESULTS: Three women had a normal BMI and three presented obesity. Overall, we found 64 genetic variants: 53.1% were somatic mutations and 46.9% were polymorphisms; 44.1% were in the non-coding region and 55.9% were in genes that encode for mitochondrial proteins. Among the somatic mutations, 67.7% were in patients with normal BMI and 32.3% in patients with obesity. CONCLUSIONS: We did not find a higher frequency of mitochondrial somatic mutations in postmenopausal women with breast cancer and obesity compared to those with normal BMI. However, results could be due to the small number of women studied.

Obesity increases the risk of developing hypertension. Since both pathological entities constitute public health problems, the aim of this study was to investigate RNA expression of adiponectin, leptin and their receptors in adipose tissue in women with class 3 obesity, with or without hypertension. Serum concentrations of these adipokines were also quantitated. Women with obesity and hypertension (nâ¯=â¯22) and with obesity without hypertension (nâ¯=â¯37) were included. All patients presented class 3 obesity, without diabetes mellitus. The expression of mRNA in: adiponectin, ADIPOR1 and ADIPOR2 was analyzed in visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) adipose tissue; leptin and its receptor were only analyzed in SAT, by reverse transcription quantitative PCR. Measurements of adiponectin and leptin concentrations were performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Analysis of mRNA expressions in VAT and SAT are presented as median and quartiles. Analysis of serum concentrations of adipokines are presented as median and percentiles 25th-75th. Women presenting a higher mean arterial pressure, had significantly higher levels of mRNA expression of adiponectin in SAT. Besides, we found several significant positive correlations of these adipokines and their receptors. In conclusion, we found that those women with a higher mean arterial pressure and receiving antihypertensive treatment, presented higher levels of mRNA expression of adiponectin in SAT.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of 2 Mexican oregano essential oils (MOO), from Poliomintha longiflora Gray (PLG) and Lippia berlandieri Schauer (LBS), in drinking water (DWt) on the performance, slaughter variables, and meat quality of broilers over a 40 D period of growth. A total of 180 non-sexed Ross-308 broilers (1-day-old) were randomly assigned to 3 treatments with 6 replications each (10 birds per replicate): CON = DWt control (without MOO); PLG = DWt + 400 mg/L of PLG; and LBS = DWt + 400 mg/L of LBS. The CON, PLG, and LBS broilers body weights were similar (P > 0.05) at all times. Feed intake (FI) was different by treatment (P < 0.05) at 7 and 28 D, and water intake (WI) was different (P < 0.05) at day 28. The CON treatment was highest (P < 0.05) at 28 D for FI and WI, whereas LBS was lowest (P < 0.05). Weight gain (WG) for CON, PLG, and LBS broilers was similar (P > 0.05), although WG for CON was slightly higher. In CON broilers, slaughter weight was highest (P < 0.05), but thigh yield was lowest (P < 0.05). The CON and PLG treatments were lower (P < 0.05) in thigh and leg cooking losses. The PLG treatment presented the highest values (P < 0.05) for breast-meat redness, saturation index, shear force, odor, taste, and overall sensory acceptability. The LBS was higher (P < 0.05) for breast-meat shear force, cohesiveness and resilience, but lower (P < 0.05) for sensory attributes. Mexican oregano essential oils at 400 mg/L can serve as natural alternative additives in DWt to improve broiler production and meat quality.

INTRODUCTION: Sporadic Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder of unknown etiology. In recent years, it has been established that a genetic component underlies different forms of the disease. For instance, mitochondrial genome variants have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the PD. AIM OF THE STUDY: To determine the association of tRNA(Gln) 4336 and 8701A>G (ATP6: Thr59Ala) mitochondrial DNA polymorphisms with the presence of PD in Mexican mestizo patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in which patients were recruited from four tertiary-care level hospitals in Mexico. Genotyping was performed using real-time PCR with TaqMan genotyping assays. Genotypes were confirmed by automated sequencing. RESULTS: The 4336C allele of the tRNAGln gene was present at a low frequency, and the 8701G allele of the MT-ATP6 gene was not associated with PD. CONCLUSIONS: The 4336C variant of the tRNAGln gene was uncommon in the study population, and 8701A/G of MT-ATP6 was not associated with PD in Mexican Mestizos.
