RESUMO

The crystallographic, optical, and electrical properties of manganese sulfide thin films depend on the control of the temperature precursors in the synthesis process, as shown by the results of this work. MnS thin films were deposited on glass substrates using the SILAR method and over an additional layer of CdS synthesized by chemical bath deposition (CBD) to acquire a p-n heterojunction. SILAR is an inexpensive method performed with a homemade robot in this case. Temperature in the solution precursors varied from 20 to 80 °C in four experiments. The morphology and structure of MnS and FTO/CdS/MnS thin films were studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD); the results indicate that materials showed a polycrystalline behavior, a diffraction peak of α- MnS cubic phase was observed with lattice constants values, ranging from 4.74 to 4.75 Å. Additionally, Raman spectroscopy showed a signal corresponding to the transversal optical phonons of MnS at a wavenumber near 300 cm-1. UV-vis spectroscopy showed optical bandgap values of 3.94, 4.0, 4.09, and 4.26 eV for thin films obtained at 20°, 40°, 60°, and 80 °C. respectively. Results indicated 80 °C as an optimal cationic precursor process temperature, achieving optical transmittance T% and good film quality according to SEM and GIXRD for the synthetization of MnS. The current-voltage (I-V) characterization in the heterojunction showed a characteristic diode curve with an open circuit voltage (VOC) of 300 mV under illumination, which indicated that the manganese sulfide behaves as p-type material contributing with positive charge carriers, while CdS behaves as n-type material.

RESUMO

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of atmospheric plasma application on the inactivation of fungi on the surface of Erythrina velutina seeds and on isolated fungal colonies. Two experiments were conducted using a completely randomized design. First, plasma was applied to the surface of the seeds using helium gas and atmospheric plasma for 3, 6, and 9 min in addition to the control (untreated seeds), constituting seven treatments with five repetitions each. In the second experiment, Petri dishes containing the inoculum of different fungi were treated with atmospheric air plasma for 3, 6, and 9 min (Air-3, Air-6, and Air-9) and were compared with untreated fungi in Petri dishes without treatment (control), totaling four treatments and five repetitions each. We found that the application of atmospheric air plasma to E. velutina seeds for 9 min had an antimicrobial effect on the fungi Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium sp., Brachysporium sp., and Rhizopus sp. The formation of fungal colonies isolated from E. velutina seeds was also inhibited by 3 min of exposure to atmospheric air plasma, except for A. niger, whose inhibition occurred after 6 min of exposure to atmospheric plasma.

Abstract Melon production in the Brazilian semi-arid region is subject to the use of marginal waters with high salinity. However, the use of regulators and bioactivators in seed treatment can mitigate the harmful effects of salts in irrigation water. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the effect of pre-germination treatments with plant regulators and bioactivator in melon seeds for the production of seedlings irrigated with biosaline water from fish farming effluent. For this, two trials with the Goldex and Grand Prix hybrids were carried out separately. A completely randomized design was used in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme (pre-germination treatments × water dilutions). In addition to the control, the seeds were treated with salicylic and gibberellic acids and thiamethoxam. The waters used for irrigation were local-supply water, fish farming effluent (biosaline water) and these diluted to 50%. Physiological and biochemical analyses were performed for fourteen days. Biosaline water (5.0 dS m-1) did not affect the emergence of Goldex melon seedlings, but compromised the establishment of the Grand Prix cultivar. Seed pre-treatments with salicylic and gibberellic acids attenuate the effects of water salinity and promote growth modulations, resulting in more vigorous melon seedlings.

OBJECTIVE: Hunter syndrome, or mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II), is caused by deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS), which is responsible for degrading heparan and dermatan sulfate. The IDS gene is located on chromosome Xq28; pathological variants in this gene mostly consist of missense mutations and small and larger deletions, which produce different phenotypes. However, there is only one record in our population concerning the molecular mechanism of this disease; a genotype-phenotype description is not available. PATIENTS AND METHODS: There were included 24 unrelated male patients; clinical features were recorded at a database, fluorometric IDS enzyme activity testing was done for each individual, followed by Sanger sequencing to identify mutations. RESULTS: The mutational spectrum was found in 16 out of 24 Mexican patients with MPS II, and its range of phenotypes was described. The most frequent variants were of the missense type. The most affected exons were exon 3 (c.275T>G, c.284_287del, c.325T>C), exon 8 (c.1035G>C, c.550G>A), exon 9 (c.1403G>C, c.1229_1229del), and exon 7 (c.979A>C; this variant has not been previously reported). Exon 5 (c.438C>T, a non-pathogenic variant) was the least frequent. It was also found that the most severely affected patients were those with large deletions (2 out of 24) [rsaIDS: IDSP1 (P164)x0, FMR1, AFF2 (P164)x2] involving genes and pseudogenes. We found 2 patients with a synonymous mutation in exon 4. CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirmed reports in the literature, since the most frequent variants were reported in exons 3 and 8. However, this result varies from one previous report in our population, which mentions large deletions and rearrangements as the most frequent alterations, since complex rearrangements were not found. According to what has been previously found, the most severely affected patients are those in which a whole gene has been deleted.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Cancer pathology reports have traditionally been narrative with limited reliable information. In high-income countries, synoptic format reporting has gradually been introduced to improve patient care and cancer registry input. We posited that introduction of synoptic style reporting was possible in Nicaragua and could serve as a model for other low- and middle-income countries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Department of Pathology, Hospital Escuela Oscar Danilo Rosales Argüello (HEODRA), León, Nicaragua, decided to introduce and implement synoptic reporting for all cancer cases beginning in 2018. All 10,012 histopathologic case reports issued by the department from January 1, 2018, through June 30, 2020, were reviewed. After excluding benign lesions, recurrent or metastatic tumors, endometrial biopsies or curettage, and primary cytologic specimens, 724 cases met the criteria for synoptic style reporting. The narrative format, previously used for all cases, was intentionally abandoned. RESULTS: Of the 10,012 reports reviewed at HEODRA during the study period, synoptic-style reporting was used for all 724 cancer cases that met criteria for inclusion in the study. In addition, all elements were listed in the required order. Narrative format of reporting was not used for any of the reports. CONCLUSION: Our experience in Nicaragua has shown that establishing synoptic-style cancer pathology reporting is achievable in a low- or middle-income country. Just as in high-income countries, a dedicated collaborative step-by-step conversion to synoptic reporting can lead to improvement in cancer patient care and quality of data for population-based registries.

RESUMO

Salvia hispanica cultivation is recent in Brazil and occurs in the off-season, when there is lower water availability in the soil. Water deficit is one of the abiotic factors that most limit germination for compromising the sequence of metabolic events that culminate with seedling emergence. Several attenuating substances have been used to mitigate the effects resulting from this stress and give higher tolerance to the species. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the action of different agents as water stress attenuators in the germination and accumulation of organic compounds in S. hispanica seedlings. The treatments consisted of pre-soaking the seeds for 4 hours in salicylic acid (1 mM.L-¹), gibberellic acid (0.4 mM.L-¹), distilled water and control treatment (without soaking). The seeds were germinated at osmotic potentials of 0.0, -0.1, -0.2, -0.3 and -0.4 MPa, using PEG 6000 as an osmotic agent. The variables germination percentage, germination speed index, shoot and primary root lengths, total dry mass, proline, total soluble sugars and total free amino acids were analyzed. Salicylic acid and gibberellic acid led to the best results among the attenuators tested, increasing germination, length, dry mass and biochemical components of S. hispanica seedlings under water deficit. Therefore, salicylic and gibberellic acids are efficient in mitigating water stress in S. hispanica seeds up to the potential of -0.4 MPa.(AU)

Logo, os ácidos salicílico e giberélico são eficientes na mitigação do estresse hídrico em sementes de S. hispanica até o potencial -0,4 MPa.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of atmospheric plasma application on the inactivation of fungi on the surface of Erythrina velutina seeds and on isolated fungal colonies.
