RESUMO

Mantle xenoliths usually represent fragments derived from the depleted and degassed lithospheric mantle with 3He/4He isotope ratios (6 ± 1 RA) lower than those of mid-ocean ridge basalts (8 ± 1 RA). Otherwise, basalts from oceanic islands related to hotspots often have high 3He/4He ratios (>10 RA), suggesting a deep and pristine undegassed mantle source. Here we present a striking high-3He/4He component (up to 27.68 RA) recorded by spinel-facies mantle xenoliths from Patagonia. Remarkably, the highest ratios were found in a long-lived trans-lithospheric suture zone related to the Carboniferous-Permian collision of two continental blocks: the Deseado and the North Patagonian massifs. The mantle xenoliths with notably high-3He/4He ratios are inferred to be fragments of the shallow asthenosphere rising through the eroded and rejuvenated thin lithosphere. The pristine helium component is derived from the western margin of the Karoo mantle plume, related to the initial stages of the Gondwana fragmentation.

RESUMO

The Andean cordillera was constructed during compressive tectonic events, whose causes and controls remain unclear. Exploring a possible link to plate convergence has been impeded by the coarse temporal resolution of existing plate kinematic models. Here we show that the Neogene evolution of the Andean margin is primarily related to changes in convergence as observed in new high-resolution plate reconstructions. Building on a compilation of plate finite rotations spanning the last 30 million years and using noise-mitigation techniques, we predict several short-term convergence changes that were unresolved in previous models. These changes are related to main tectono-magmatic events and require forces that are compatible with a range of geodynamic processes. These results allow to revise models of ongoing subduction orogeny at its type locality, emphasizing the role of upper plate deformation in the balance between kinematic energy associated with plate motion and gravitational potential energy stored in orogenic crustal roots.

RESUMO

In active tectonic settings dominated by strike-slip kinematics, slip partitioning across subparallel faults is a common feature; therefore, assessing the degree of partitioning and strain localization is paramount for seismic hazard assessments. Here, we estimate a slip rate of 18.8 ± 2.0 mm/year over the past 9.0 ± 0.1 ka for a single strand of the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault System, which straddles the Main Cordillera in Southern Chile. This Holocene rate accounts for ~ 82% of the trench-parallel component of oblique plate convergence and is similar to million-year estimates integrated over the entire fault system. Our results imply that strain localizes on a single fault at millennial time scale but over longer time scales strain localization is not sustained. The fast millennial slip rate in the absence of historical Mw > 6.5 earthquakes along the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault System implies either a component of aseismic slip or Mw ~ 7 earthquakes involving multi-trace ruptures and > 150-year repeat times. Our results have implications for the understanding of strike-slip fault system dynamics within volcanic arcs and seismic hazard assessments.

RESUMO

We observed vertically displaced coastal and river markers after the 27 February 2010 Chilean earthquake [moment magnitude (Mw) 8.8]. Land-level changes range between 2.5 and -1 meters, evident along an approximately 500-kilometers-long segment identified here as the maximum length of coseismic rupture. A hinge line located 120 kilometers from the trench separates uplifted areas, to the west, from subsided regions. A simple elastic dislocation model fits these observations well; model parameters give a similar seismic moment to seismological estimates and suggest that most of the plate convergence since the 1835 great earthquake was elastically stored and then released during this event.

RESUMO

A simple and fast method was developed for the simultaneous determination of dapsone and pyrimethamine by first-order digital derivative spectrophotometry. Acetonitrile was used as a solvent to extract the drugs from the pharmaceutical formulations, and the samples were subsequently evaluated directly by digital derivative spectrophotometry. The simultaneous determination of both drugs was performed by the zero-crossing method at 249.4 and 231.4 nm for dapsone and pyrimethamine, respectively. The best signal-to-noise ratio was obtained when the first derivative of the spectrum was used. The linear range of determination for the drugs was from 6.6 x 10(-7) to 2.0 x 10(-4) and from 2.5 x 10(-6) to 2.0 x 10(-4) mol/L for dapsone and pyrimethamine, respectively. The excipients of commercial pharmaceutical formulations did not interfere in the analysis. Chemical and spectral variables were optimized for determination of both analytes. A good level of repeatability, 0.6 and 1.7% for dapsone and pyrimethamine, respectively, was observed. The proposed method was applied for the simultaneous determination of both drugs in pharmaceutical formulations.
