RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: The NELSON study demonstrated a positive association between computed tomography scanning and reduced mortality associated with lung cancer. The COPD-LUCSS-DLCO is a tool designed to improve screening selection criteria of lung cancer for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. The aim of this study was to examine and compare the discriminating value of both scores in a community-based cohort of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. METHODS: A retrospective study of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients followed in pulmonology consultation for a period of 10 years (2009-2019) was conducted. The NELSON criteria and COPD-LUCSS-DLCO score were calculated for each patient at the time of the study inclusion. The lung cancer incidence was calculated for each of the subgroups during the follow-up period. RESULTS: A total of 103 patients were included in the study (mean age 64.7±9.2 years, 88.3% male). Applying the COPD-LUCSS-DLCO score, high-risk patients have a 5.9-fold greater risk of developing lung cancer versus the low risk. In contrast, there was no significant association between NELSON selection criteria and lung cancer incidence. The area under the curve was 0.69 for COPD-LUCSS-DLCO and 0.59 for NELSON criteria. Comparing test results showed no differences. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the COPD-LUCSS-DLCO score in clinical practice can help to detect chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients in greater risk of developing lung cancer with better performance than NELSON criteria. Therefore, models that include a risk biomarker strategy can improve selection criteria and consequently can enhance a better lung cancer prediction.

RESUMO
Air quality in the State of Sao Paulo was evaluated during the first general State plan of mobility restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic (24th March to May 31, 2020). Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 and sulphur dioxide (SO2) concentrations were assessed in cities of the Sao Paulo State with a monitoring station and compared to historical data. Linear regression models were built to investigate the relationship between the isolation of the population - determined using mobile phone monitoring data - and the concentration of each pollutant during the studied period. Although the reduction of pollutants such as NO2, SO2 and PM2.5 is very clear, the economic and climatic characteristics of each region were decisive in the general behaviour of O3 and PM10. It was not possible to establish a correlation between the pollutants and the isolation index, partly due to the lack of data, partly due to the compliance of the population to those measurements, which was variable over time. Another important limitation factor was the absence of data related to the pollutants of interest in many of the stations. However, the isolation measures carried out in the State opened the opportunity to individually assess the air quality measurements in each of the stations, enabling an understanding that will allow in the future the design of air quality policies together with local sanitary policies.

BACKGROUND: Although an increasing body of data reports the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in air, this does not correlate to the presence of infectious viruses, thus not evaluating the risk for airborne COVID-19. Hence there is a marked knowledge gap that requires urgent attention. Therefore, in this systematic review, viability/stability of airborne SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV viruses is discussed. METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed on PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science and Scopus to assess the stability and viability of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 on air samples. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The initial search identified 27 articles. Following screening of titles and abstracts and removing duplicates, 11 articles were considered relevant. Temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 25 °C and relative humidity ranging from 40% to 50% were reported to have a protective effect on viral viability for airborne SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. As no data is yet available on the conditions influencing viability for airborne SARS-CoV-2, and given the genetic similarity to SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, one could extrapolate that the same conditions would apply. Nonetheless, the effect of these conditions seems to be residual considering the increasing number of cases in the south of USA, Brazil and India, where high temperatures and humidities have been observed. CONCLUSION: Higher temperatures and high relative humidity can have a modest effect on SARS-CoV-2 viability in the environment, as reported in previous studies to this date. However, these studies are experimental, and do not support the fact that the virus has efficiently spread in the tropical regions of the globe, with other transmission routes such as the contact and droplet ones probably being responsible for the majority of cases reported in these regions, along with other factors such as human mobility patterns and contact rates. Further studies are needed to investigate the extent of aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2 as this would have important implications for public health and infection-control policies.
