RESUMO

Comparison between coronary angiography (CA) and SPECT myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) using Tc-99m labeled compounds in 30 patients (23 males, 7 females) yielded a sensitivity of 97 percent and a specificity of 76 percent for lesion detectability (p<0.01) using CA as the reference standard. Angiographic analysis initially ascribed the scintigraphic defects in 8 patients (5 males, 3 females) as falsely positive. Eleven coronary artery territories were involved: eight within the LAD and three within the RCA. Patient symptomatology however, prompted angiographic review which revealed myocardial bridging of the LAD in one male patient and differential perfusion of the LAD in two male patients. A review of the patients' history revealed associated risk factors such as diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension and smoking. Based on these findings, critical re-evaluation of other pathophysiolocial abnormalities in the absence of vascular stenosis should thus be sought in patients with positives MPD and associated risk factors to avoid unsuspected patient morbidity (AU)

RESUMO

Effect of oral administration of crude aqueous neem extract on serum testosterone and other blood constituents was studied in the male Wistar rats for 10 weeks. The neem treatment resulted in significant decreases (p,0.01) in total testosterone, total bilirubin and K+ in serum. There were also increases (p<0.05) in packed cell volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, red blood cell, white blood cell and lymphocyte counts without showing any cytotoxic effects in the body (AU)

RESUMO

Thirty-three cases of traumatic dislocations of the hip joint treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital between January 1976 and December 1983 were studied. Thirty-one were posterior dislocations, one anterior and one central. There were 27 men and 6 women. Road traffic accidents accounted for over 2/3 of the cases. Five resulted from falls and four from other less severe trauma. The sole case of anterior dislocation resulted from an alleged assault. Twenty-one of the 33 cases were available for review. Ten had required open operation to reduce and fix the acetabular fragment or reduce the dislocation. Two patients died. Follow-up of these 19 remaining patients (1-6 years) showed 85 percent good or excellent clinical results. Complications encountered included sciatic nerve palsy, (2 patients), extra capsular calcification (2 patients) and avascular necrosis of the femoral head in one case, leading to osteroarthritis. Prognosis of these injuries seems to depend on the severity of the injury, the age of the patient, and the timing of the reduction, especially open reduction (AU)
