RESUMO

A 2-year-old English bulldog presented history of recurrent lower urinary tract disease, refractory to treatment. The Complete Blood Count revealed lymphopenia, hyperproteinemia, and hyperglobulinemia, while urinalysis indicated leukocyturia and bacteriuria. On the abdominal ultrasound, the bladder had a focal wall thickening in its cranial portion, as well as irregular echogenicity and internal margins. A bladder surgical biopsy was performed, indicating the presence of follicular cystitis. Clinical signs disappeared after treatment with a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, NSAIDs, supplementation with cranberry extract associated with cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa). Clinical follow-up 12 months after surgery showed remission at all clinical signs. Follicular cystitis in dogs was reported only once worldwide, this case report is the first in Brazil; thus, it may be considered in the differential diagnosis for patients with refractory and recurrent lower urinary tract disease.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the concentration of kidney injury molecule-1 and activity of urinary gamma-glutamyl transferase in cats with urethral obstruction and healthy cats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood and urine samples were collected from a group of 15 healthy cats (control group) and a group of 20 cats with urethral obstruction at presentation, and 24 hours and 7 days after unblocking the obstruction. The serum creatinine, urinary creatinine and urinary gamma-glutamyl transferase were measured by spectrophotometry and kidney injury molecule-1 by the sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: On presentation, cats with obstruction had serum creatinine concentration and urinary gamma-glutamyl transferase index higher than healthy cats (mean difference 544 µmol/L, 95% confidence intervals 222 to 865 µmol/L, and 0.0022 U/µmol-uCre, 0.00043 to 0.0039 U/µmol-uCre, respectively), urine creatinine concentration lower (mean difference 25,624 µmol/L, 17,329 to 33,919 µmol/L), and no significant difference in the kidney injury molecule-1/urinary creatinine ratio (mean difference 13 pg/µmol-uCre, -33 to 59 pg/µmol-uCre). In the group of cats with urinary obstruction, over time serum creatinine decreased, urine creatinine increased, urinary gamma-glutamyl transferase index did not change significantly, and kidney injury molecule-1/urinary creatinine ratio increased. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Cats with post-renal obstruction and potential intrinsic renal damage had higher urinary gamma-glutamyl transferase index than healthy cats at the time of presentation and showed increase in kidney injury molecule-1/urinary creatinine ratio over time.

The present study aimed to report a case of lymphoma in leukemic phase in feline coinfected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Blood counts, reticulocyte counts, bone marrow avaluation, biochemistry, immunochromatography assay for FIV and FeLV, indirect immunofluorescence (IFA) for FeLV, thoracic radiography and renal citology were performed. This last examination revealed extranodal lymphoma. The association of the clinical signs with the infiltration of a high number of lymphoblastic cells in the bone marrow with cytomorphological criteria of malignancy, atypical mitoses, lymphoglandular corpuscles and hematopoietic material were determinant for the diagnostic conclusion. Lymphoma is a relatively common neoplasm in felines, however the leukemic phase is rare and may represent a clinical diagnostic challenge, making it essential to include bone marrow cytology in the clinical practice of this species.(AU)

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of feeding laying hens diets containing cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) as a source of anacardic acid on the blood biochemical parameters as well as the enzymatic activity and lipid peroxidation of liver and tissues of the reproductive system (ovary, magnum, and uterus). A total of 216 Hisex White commercial laying hens were distributed randomly into six treatments, with six replicates of six birds. Treatments consisted of a diet without growth promoter (GP); a diet with GP; and diets without GP, with addition of increasing levels of CNSL (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0%). Addition of CNSL to the diet did not affect the blood biochemical parameters (uric acid, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total cholesterol, high density lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins and triglycerides), the enzymatic activity (superoxide dismutase and nonprotein sulphydryl groups) in the organs (liver, ovary, magnum and uterus) or the peroxidation of lipids from the blood serum, liver, magnum and uterus (p > 0.05). However, the addition of 0.75% and 1.00% CNSL provided a lower thiobarbituric acid reactive substances content in the birds' ovary (p < 0.001) compared to birds of other treatments, whereas the treatment without the GP provided a higher value. Addition of up to 1% of the CNSL as a source of anacardic acid in the laying hens' diets does not influence blood biochemical parameters or the endogenous enzymatic activity in the liver, ovary, magnum and uterus, but affects the lipid peroxidation in the ovary, although the problem is reduced from the inclusion of 0.75% CNSL.

RESUMO

This study reports a co-infection of Escherichia coli and Salmonella in a free-living ruddy ground dove (Columbina talpacoti) received at the Laboratory of Ornithological Studies of the State University of Ceará, Brazil. The bird presented diarrhea, leg paralysis and anorexia, and died shortly after. Necropsy was then performed and samples from lung, kidney, liver and intestine were collected for microbiological and histopathological analyses. Escherichia coli was isolated from cloacal swab, lung and kidney samples. Salmonella ser. Saintpaul was identified in liver and spleen samples. Escherichia coli isolates were tested for the presence of eight diagnostic genes for diarrheagenic pathotypes (STEC, ETEC, EPEC, EIEC, EAEC) with conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). EAEC was detected in the lung and kidney, and STEC in the intestine. In conclusion, Columbina talpacoti is susceptible to enteroaggregative Escherichia coli and Salmonella ser. Saintpaul infection, which may have public health implications.(AU)

RESUMO

The hematological and serum proteins electrophoretic profiles of 13 dogs with distemper (Lentz inclusion body in leukocytes) were studied. The most frequent hematological findings were: normocitic normocromic anemia (61%), leukopenia (46%), left shount (54%), trombocytopenia (69%) and lymphopenia (85%). Electrophoretic analysis of serum proteins showed hypoproteinemia (54%), with reduced albumin and increased alfa-2 globulin. These findings can be used to support the clinical diagnosis of canine distemper.

RESUMO

A neural network model for solving constrained nonlinear optimization problems with bounded variables is presented in this paper. More specifically, a modified Hopfield network is developed and its internal parameters are computed using the valid-subspace technique. These parameters guarantee the convergence of the network to the equilibrium points. The network is shown to be completely stable and globally convergent to the solutions of constrained nonlinear optimization problems. A fuzzy logic controller is incorporated in the network to minimize convergence time. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed approach.

RESUMO

This work presents the design of a neurofuzzy controller with simplified architecture that minimizes the processing time used in several stages associated with systems and processes modelling. The basic procedures of fuzzification and defuzzification are very simplified, whereas the inference procedures are computed in a direct way. The simplified architecture has allowed a fast and easy configuration of the neurofuzzy controller, as consequence, the control rules that define the control actions are obtained automatically. To validate the proposed approach, this neurofuzzy system is used in an industrial application for fluid flow control.

RESUMO

A total of 30 strains of Fusobacterium sp. isolated from gengival sulcus of 28 equines was studied in the period between January/1997 and April/1998. Bacterial isolation and antimicrobial resistance were determined by biochemical analyses and by the disk elution method. The species most frequently isolated was Fusobacterium nucleatum. The following resistance rates were observed: 10 per cent for penicillin G, 87 per cent for eritromycin, and 97 per cent for sulfonamide. Theses results emphasize the need for monitoring the susceptibility patterns of this important bacterial groups frequently isolated from normal sites in equines

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To present the case of a child with neonatal primary hyperparathyroidism submitted to preoperative image studies that couldn't localize the parathyroid glands. METHODS: Report of clinical and laboratory evaluation of neonatal primary hyperparathyroidism in a two-and-a-half-monthold child submitted to preoperative cervical ultrasonography and parathyroid scintigraphy with Technetium-99m-Sestamibi, and subtotal parathyroidectomy at the age of four-and-a -half months. RESULTS: The preoperative images suggested an erroneous diagnosis of parathyroid adenoma. After surgery and pos-operative histopathological exams, hyperplasia of parathyroid glands was confirmed. After two years and a half the child has normal parathyroid function. CONCLUSIONS: The cervical ultrasonography and the parathyroid scintigraphy with Technetium-99m-Sestamibi were not useful for preoperative localization of hyperplasied parathyroid glands in the neonatal primary hyperparathyroidism in this case. The subtotal parathyroidectomy has been a successful method for the maintenance of normocalcemy in the patient.

RESUMO

The influence of 15 or 25 mg/m2 of daily oral hydrocortisone with fludrocortisone 0.1 mg/day on growth and laboratory findings was evaluated in a prospective randomised crossover trial over 12 months in 26 children with 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Nine non-salt losers had fludrocortisone stopped for a further six month period. Height velocity was significantly decreased during treatment with 25 mg/m2 as compared with 15 mg/m2. This was the most sensitive indicator of corticosteroid treatment excess. A dose dependent effect upon plasma concentrations of 17-hydroxyprogesterone, testosterone, and androstenedione was found but increased values were still detected in more than half of the determinations made during the 25 mg/m2 period. Height velocity and 17-hydroxyprogesterone concentrations were positively correlated. Growth hormone response to clonidine stimulation and insulin-like growth factor-1 concentrations were both within reference values and there was no difference between treatment periods. Withdrawal of fludrocortisone did not result in any difference for the non-salt losers. It was concluded that 25 mg/m2 of hydrocortisone depressed growth in children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and that full suppression, or even normalisation, of plasma concentrations of 17-hydroxyprogesterone and androgens should not be considered a treatment goal, but instead an indication of corticosteroid treatment excess.

RESUMO

In order to shed light on the controversy in the literature about the efficacy of medical treatment of undescended testes, HCG was administered to 73 boys. They were seven month to twelve years old and none of them had puberty signs. Cryptorchidism was unilateral in 75.4%; it was bilateral in 24.6%. Children with retractile testes were excluded from the study. The patients received IM HCG 1500 to 2000 IU/sqm twice a week for 5 weeks. Testicular descent was noted in 23.0% of the undescended testes, often in the first 2.5 weeks of therapy. All children were followed up for at least a year and relapse was observed in 8.3%. Clinical signs of testosterone action faded off shortly after the end of injections. No side effects were apparent by the third month after treatment. We conclude that the administration of HCG is worth of a trial before the surgical approach is contemplated in the management of the cryptorchidism.

RESUMO

We studied 13 children with 21-hydroxyalse deficiency to explore the immediate potential suppressive effect of hydrocortisone dose schedule on the adrenal cortex. They were given 20 mg/m2 daily in a controlled trial. After random administration of a greater dose in the morning (7 patients) or at night (6 patients), we measured plasma levels of 17-hydroxyprogesterone, testosterone, and androstenedione at times-24, 0, 2, 4, and 6h. Considerable fluctuation of the steroid levels, unrelated to the drug intake, was observed. There was no statistically significant differences between the "morning dose" and "night dose" groups for any steroid. We conclude that; (i) the greater night dose did not avoid the 17-hydroxyprogesterone morning peaks, and (ii) the variation in plasma steroid levels is so marked that a single morning sample is unreliable to reflect the degree of adrenal suppression.

RESUMO

The Russel's syndrome is characterized by emaciation and hyperactivity in children and is caused by hypothalamic expansive process. This report presents the typical signs of the syndrome associated with growth hormone secretion disorders and precocious puberty pattern appearing at the age of four. The pathogenesis of the disorder is discussed and related to the hypothalamus-pituitary axis dysfunction caused by the tumor growth.
