RESUMO

Cagarras Islands Archipelago, a no-take MPA in Southeast Brazil, was designated as Natural Monument (MONA Cagarras) and, more recently, recognized as Hope Spot for biodiversity conservation. This study aimed to assess plastic contamination by analyzing marine litter and microplastics in MONA Cagarras and surrounding waters. Marine litter (34.12 kg) was caught by artisanal fishermen in MONA Cagarras proximities, and plastics represented ∼79 %. Personal hygiene items and strains of hair were found, suggesting sewage-derived contamination from Ipanema SSO. Microplastics were detected in MONA Cagarras surface waters. Fragments and black particle were the most frequently found microplastic shape and color, respectively. µ-FTIR analysis identified, in descending order of occurrence, polystyrene-PS, polyethylene-PE, polyvinyl chloride-PVC, polypropylene-P, and polyamide-PA. Our integrated results of macro and microplastic contamination highlight an issue of effective conservation and health of marine biodiversity in MONA Cagarras and surrounding waters and a concern for better management of Brazilian MPAs.

RESUMO

This study was a randomized controlled clinical trial with two parallel arms and the objective was to compare the survival of resin modified glass ionomer (RMGIC) restorations in primary teeth using rubber dam or cotton roll isolation after a 30-month follow-up period. Ninety-two children (mean age 6.8 ± 1.37) and 200 primary molars with occlusal or occluso-proximal cavitated dentin caries lesions were randomly assigned into two groups: cotton rolls and rubber dam. All lesions were restored using RMGIC (RIVA Light Cure) after selective caries removal. Restorative failure and lesion arrestment were evaluated by two independent, trained, and calibrated examiners through clinical and radiographic examinations. The Kaplan-Meier test was used to assess the survival of restorations and Cox regression was used to assess the association of risk factors with restorative failure. There was no significant difference in survival rates between groups (p = 0.17). Older age (HR = 2.81 [95%CI: 1.47-5.44]) and higher rate of gingival bleeding (HR = 0.47 [95%CI: 0.23-0.99]) were associated with restorative failure. No patient had painful symptoms, pulp outcomes, or radiographic changes compatible with lesion progression. The use of rubber dam isolation did not increase the survival rate of occlusal and occluso-proximal restorations using RMGIC in primary molars after 30 months of follow-up. Since the survival is not influenced by the type of isolation, the professional can safely choose the appropriate technique for each case, considering his experience and preferences, as well as those of the patient.

RESUMO

Objective: this study aimed to evaluate knowledge and attitudes of professional wine tasters about erosive tooth wear. Material and Methods: two questionnaires were applied to 56 wine tasters during the 25th National Evaluation of Wines - Safra 2017 in Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul. Descriptive data analysis and the Fisher's exact test were performed (p < 0.05). Results: for the analysis, 56 volunteers aged 25-76 years were included. Most of the volunteers reported attending dentist once a year (55.35%) and their teeth become sorer after ingesting liquids or acid foods (32.14%) over time. The majority (82.14%) believe wine tasting may have teeth effects and have already heard about erosive tooth wear (51.78%). However, when asked about symptomatology, more than half (53.57%) reported not to know. Brushing teeth immediately after ingesting something (37.5%) and increasing the brushing frequency (33.92%) were the most cited treatment options. The habit of using mouthwash solutions was significantly associated with the professionals age (p = 0.039). Conclusion: the volunteers reported a high intake of acid substances and, although most of them reported to consult dentist regularly and have already heard about erosive tooth wear, knowledge about this condition is still limited among these professionals.

OBJECTIVES: This two-arm, parallel-group, tooth-randomised, controlled noninferiority clinical trial aimed to compare survival rates between the sealing and restoring of cavitated occlusal carious lesions in dentine [International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) 5] of deciduous molars using resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC) and to assess caries progression radiographically. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 68 molars with ICDAS 5 occlusal lesions were randomly allocated into two groups, a sealing group (n = 31), in which RMGIC was placed directly over the carious lesion, and a restoration group (n = 37), in which a restoration with the same material was placed after selective caries removal. During the baseline and follow-up visits, dental caries was registered and caries activity was assessed according to a visuotactile criterion. At baseline, patient caries status (dmf-t) and cavity depth and extent (mesiodistal and buccolingual) were measured before RMGIC placement. An independent and blinded examiner evaluated the treated teeth using the USPHS criteria after one and two years. Standardised interproximal radiographs were taken for caries progression assessments. RESULTS: During the follow-up period, no lesion progression was observed radiographically. After one year (n = 60; 27 sealed and 33 restored) and two years (n = 48; 23 sealed and 25 restored) of follow-up, the treatment success rates were 78.8% and 76.0% in the restoration group and 59.3% and 47.8% in the sealing group, respectively. Multivariate Cox regression showed that lesions smaller than 2 mm in the mesiodistal extent were less prone to fail after one year (p = 0.03). However, survival curves (log-rank test) were statistically significantly different only after two years (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Sealing ICDAS 5 occlusal lesions of deciduous molars using RMGIC achieved lower survival rates than restorations. Both sealing and restoration effectively arrested caries progression for two years. Clinical relevance Sealing dentine carious lesions can be effective for treating lesions involving the inner and outer half of the dentine. Ultraconservative treatments can arrest carious lesions presenting obvious cavitation in primary molars. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ReBEC Register no. RBR-225n35.

The aim of this study was to describe the trends of interpersonal coordination in the dance of Jazz duets in conditions that use and do not use the mirror as a visual reference for the acquisition of dancer-teacher coordination. Four experienced dancers from the municipality of Ilhéus/BA participate in the study. The participants made 10 attempts followed by a choreography in correspondence with the teacher/researcher. Each participant was individually instructed to perform the Jazz sequence in one of the observational conditions: (1) With mirror: perform the sequence whith mirror; (2) Without mirror: perform the sequence without mirror. The task was filmed by a digital camera configured for recording at 30 Hz. In order to check the mirror effect, the synchronization of the movements was analyzed using the videogrammetric procedure. Using the technique of cross correlation and running correlation, it was possible to identify (at each foot contact with the ground) the moments in-phase (symmetrical), anti-phase (antisymmetric) and out of phase (non-symmetric). The results indicated strong in-phase synchrony, regardless of the availability of the mirror (r = 0.8 to 1.0). The participants who performed in front of the mirror presented a predominantly symmetrical coordination landscape and with no time lag (Lag ≈ 0). On the other hand, for participants who performed without mirror presented moments of non-symmetry and little variation in the time lag between attempts. It was also possible to verify that the first half of the sequence was less coordinated when compared to the second half. It was concluded, in this preliminary study that experienced dancers were little affected by the use of the mirror, presenting strong interpersonal coordination and little time lag in learning a Jazz sequence. It can be concluded that the methodology used was able to measure coordination satisfactorily, presenting itself as a promising resource for the analysis of interpersonal coordination in other categories and contexts of dance. RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of non-invasive and micro-invasive treatments on the arrest of occlusal enamel carious lesions in erupting permanent molars. This two-arm randomized clinical trial included 27 subjects, aged 5-11 years, with 64 erupting permanent molars presenting active occlusal enamel carious lesions (as assessed by the International Caries Detection and Assessment System [ICDAS]; scores 1-3). The sample was randomly assigned into two treatment groups: 1) resin-modified glass ionomer cement sealant (Clinpro XT Varnish; 3M ESPE) and 2) 4-week topical fluoride varnish application (Duraphat; Colgate). All children and parents received oral hygiene and dietary instructions. Teeth were evaluated at baseline and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months regarding the eruption stage, biofilm accumulation, as well as severity and activity of the carious lesions. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to evaluate the survival estimates for inactivation of the carious lesions for both treatment groups. Multivariate Cox regression models with shared frailty were performed to identify factors associated with the outcome (p < 0.05). After 12 months, 22% and 3% of the lesions treated with topical fluoride varnish and sealant, respectively remained active. The adjusted model demonstrated that younger children had a higher probability of active enamel carious lesions arresting (hazard ratio [HR] 0.42, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.22-0.78; p=0.01). However, the probability of active enamel carious lesions arresting after sealant application was 8.85 times higher compared with fluoride varnish applications (p=0.01). Sealing is a more effective approach than fluoride varnish for arresting occlusal enamel carious lesions in erupting permanent molars.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study translated, culturally adapted, and validated a Brazilian Portuguese version (SCOFF-BR) of the Sick, Control, One Stone, Fat, Food Questionnaire (SCOFF) to screen eating disorders in young adults. METHODS: This study used back-translation to culturally adapt the questionnaire according to International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcome Research principles. The SCOFF-BR validation process involved a sample of men and women aged 18-32 years from a university community. After the participants completed the SCOFF-BR questionnaire, pre-trained researchers interviewed them with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). The presence of eating disorders was determined according to DSM-5 criteria. RESULTS: Of the 361 subjects, 9.7% had an eating disorder (2.2% anorexia nervosa, 5% bulimia nervosa, and 2.5% binge-eating disorder). Using a cutoff point of two positive responses, we obtained a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 71.5%, with an accuracy of 72.3%. The positive and negative predictive values were 23.1% and 97.1%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the Brazilian version of the SCOFF questionnaire presents satisfactory accuracy and reliability to screen eating disorders among young adults in the Brazilian university community.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to compare the acquired enamel pellicle protein profile of professional wine tasters with mild and moderate erosive tooth wear. Twelve professional wine tasters participated (3 from a low tooth wear group; 9 from a high tooth wear group). Acquired enamel pellicle samples were collected and processed for proteomic analysis (nLC-ESI-MS/MS). The acquired enamel pellicle proteomic profile was different between the groups. The proteins found exclusively in the low tooth wear group were histatins 1 and 3 and mucins 7 and 21. When comparing the wear groups, proteins with higher levels in the low tooth wear group included neutrophil defensins (1 and 3), lysozyme C, lysozyme, myeloperoxidase, and squalene monooxygenase. In conclusion, the findings indicate that the proteins found at higher levels in the low tooth wear group and proteins exclusively found in the low tooth wear group might be protective and, therefore, could be good candidates for further studies regarding their potential to be added to dental products to protect professional wine tasters from extrinsic erosive tooth wear.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Between 2006 and 2013, Peru implemented national programs which drastically decreased rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. However, since 2013, maternal and neonatal mortality in Peru have increased. Additionally, discrimination, abuse, and violence against women persists globally and impacts birthing experiences and mental health. This qualitative study sought to better understand the attitudes and beliefs regarding childbirth among women and providers in Southern Peru. This study also explores how these beliefs influence utilization of skilled care, patient-provider dynamics, and childbirth experiences and identifies factors that impact providers' provision of care. METHODS: Thirty semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants from rural Colca Canyon and 15 participants from urban Arequipa between April and May 2018. In each region, 10 women who had experienced recent births and five providers were interviewed. Provider participants predominantly identified as female and were mostly midwives. All interviews were conducted, transcribed, and coded in Spanish. A framework analysis was followed, and data were charted into two separate thematic frameworks using contextual and evaluative categories of conceptualization of childbirth. RESULTS: All recent births discussed were facility-based births. Four domains emerged: women's current birth experiences, provision of childbirth care, beliefs about childbirth among women and providers, and future health-seeking behavior. Findings suggest that women's feelings of helplessness and frustration were exacerbated by their unmet desire for respectful maternity care and patient advocacy or companionship. Providers attributed strain to perceived patient characteristics and insufficient support, including resources and staff. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest current childbirth experiences placed strain on the patient-provider dynamic and influenced women's attitudes and beliefs about future experiences. Currently, the technical quality of safe childbirth is the main driver of skilled birth attendance and facility-based births for women regardless of negative experiences. However, lack of respectful maternity care has been shown to have major long-term implications for women and subsequently, their children. This is one of the first studies to describe the nuances of patient-provider relationships and women's childbirth experiences in rural and urban Peru.

RESUMO

The repair of large bone defects is lengthy and complex. Both biomaterials and phototherapy have been used to improve bone repair. We aimed to describe histologically the repair of tibial fractures treated by wiring (W), irradiated or not, with laser (λ780 nm, 70 mW, CW, spot area of 0.5 cm2, 20.4 J/cm2 (4 × 5.1 J/cm2, Twin Flex Evolution®, MM Optics, Sao Carlos, SP, Brazil) per session, 300 s, 142.8 J/cm2 per treatment) or LED (λ850 ± 10 nm, 150 mW, spot area of 0.5 cm2, 20.4 J/cm2 per session, 64 s, 142.8 J/cm2 per treatment, Fisioled®, MM Optics, Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and associated or not to the use of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA, Angelus®, Londrina, PR, Brazil). Inflammation was discrete on groups W and W + LEDPT and absent on the others. Phototherapy protocols started immediately before suturing and repeated at every other day for 15 days. Collagen deposition intense on groups W + LEDPT, W + BIO-MTA + LaserPT and W + BIO-MTA + LEDPT and discrete or moderate on the other groups. Reabsorption was discrete on groups W and W + LEDPT and absent on the other groups. Neoformation varied greatly between groups. Most groups were partial and moderately filed with new-formed bone (W, W + LaserPT, W + LEDPT, W + BIO-MTA + LEDPT). On groups W + BIO-MTA and W + BIO-MTA + LaserPT bone, neoformation was intense and complete. Our results are indicative that the association of MTA and PBMT (λ = 780 nm) improves the repair of complete tibial fracture treated with wire osteosynthesis in a rodent model more efficiently than LED (λ = 850 ± 10 nm).

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the survival of occlusal and occlusal-proximal restorations performed with resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC) in deciduous molars using rubber dam and cotton rolls isolation. Material and Methods: Ninety-two patients were included and 200 deciduous molars with cavitated occlusal or occlusoproximal dentin caries lesions were randomized into two groups: cotton rolls (n = 100) and rubber dam (n = 100) and RMGIC restorations were placed. At baseline and in the follow-up visit, presence, severity and activity of caries lesions were registered. Two independent, blinded examiners evaluated the treated teeth clinically using the USPHS criteria and radiographically after 9 months. Descriptive analysis, survival curve (log-rank test) and Cox regression were performed to assess risk factors related to failure. Results: Out of the 179 teeth (92 cotton rolls group and 87 rubber dam group) evaluated at 9-month follow-up period. No lesion progression was observed radiographically. The overall treatment success rate was 85.47% (83.47% for cotton rolls and 87.35 rubber dam group). No significant difference between isolation methods was observed in the log-rank test (p = 0.16). Cox regression showed no risk factors related to failure. Conclusion: No difference was found in the survival of occlusal and occlusal-proximal restorations performed with RMGIC in deciduous molars using a rubber dam and cotton rolls isolation after a 9-month follow-up period.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has affected adults and children and penalized older people and those with comorbidities such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and obesity. Most of those infected are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, but 15% may have pneumonia and 5% acute respiratory distress syndrome. We report a case of X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) in a 27-yearold man who was infected with SARS-CoV-2. XLA patients do not have B lymphocytes and do not produce antibodies because of mutations in the Bruton tyrosine-kinase gene, responsible for the maturation of B cells. This patient was infected and then admitted to a hospital in Ivoti, southern Brazil. Pneumonia progressed rapidly, requiring transfer to the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre on the 10th day. Intravenous immunoglobulin infusions were initiated, using a total of 400 grams because of an intense catabolism of IgG, and the concentration was kept around 700- 900 mg/dL. Mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and hemodialysis were necessary. Convalescent plasma (CP) was administered (2x300 mL) and then followed by clinical and radiological improvement and interruption of mechanical ventilation. Then he got sicker and had to return to invasive support and received 4 extra CP infusions (total of 1717 mL), until a negative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for SARS-CoV-2 was obtained. On 3 occasions he had sepsis, promptly managed. He had anemia, requiring frequent transfusion, and lymphopenia (CD3, CD4, CD8, NK), with absence of B lymphocytes. Lymphopenia was reverted during recovery, and he was discharged from the hospital on the 70th day.

RESUMO

This study assessed the effectiveness of models for developing subsurface caries lesions in vitro and verified mineral changes by transverse microradiography (TMR). Enamel blocks from permanent (n=5) and deciduous teeth (n=5) were submitted to lesion induction by immersion in demineralizing solutions during 96 h, followed by pH cycles of demineralization (de) and remineralization (re) for 10 days. Two de-/re solutions were tested. Demineralizing solution "A" was composed by 2.2 mM CaCl2, 2.2 mM KH2PO4, 0.05 M acetic acid, with pH 4.4 adjusted by 1 M KOH. Demineralizing solution "B" was composed by 2.2 mM CaCl2, 2.2 mM NaH2PO4, 0.05 M acetic acid and 0.25 ppmF, with pH 4.5 adjusted by 1M KOH. Solution "A" produced cavitated lesions in permanent teeth, whereas solution "B" led to subsurface lesions in deciduous teeth. Solution "B" was then tested in enamel blocks from permanent teeth (n=5) and subsurface lesions were obtained, so that solution "B" was employed for both substrates, and the blocks were treated with slurries of a fluoride dentifrice (1450 ppm F, as NaF, n=5) or a fluoride-free dentifrice (n=5). Solution "B" produced subsurface lesions in permanent and primary teeth of an average (±SD) depth of 88.4µm (±14.3) and 89.3µm (±15.8), respectively. TMR analysis demonstrated that lesions treated with fluoride-free dentifrice had significantly greater mineral loss. This study concluded that solution "B" developed subsurface lesions after pH cycling, and that mineral changes were successfully assessed by TMR.

Background: Despite national efforts to control pediatric anemia in Peru, each year, 67.4% of all newborns are diagnosed with anemia during their first year of life. The literature on Peruvian mothers' understanding and beliefs of pediatric anemia is limited. In the present study, we aimed to understand mother's perspective of pediatric anemia and explore their perceptions on how to prevent and treat anemia in Peru. Methods: During May-June 2018, we administered a short demographic questionnaire and conducted language-sensitive interviews with mothers of children clinically diagnosed with anemia in three different governmental health centers in Arequipa, Peru. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. We used the Framework Analysis approach to analyze qualitative data. Results: A total of 14 Peruvian mothers were interviewed. Across interviews, three main themes emerged: (I) Mothers' Understanding of Pediatric Anemia; (II) Attitudes about Provider Recommendations for Pediatric Anemia Control; and (III) Barriers to Effective Pediatric Anemia Control. Peruvian mothers expressed skepticism toward national pediatric anemia guidelines as they believe recommendations received at health clinics jeopardized their children's overall health. Participants identified several barriers to effective anemia control: limited and confusing health information received during pediatric healthcare appointments, lack of systematic protocols in health clinics, and inconsistent referral processes. Conclusion: We identified factors that limit the acceptance of current pediatric anemia control guidelines followed at governmental health centers in Arequipa, Peru. Understanding maternal beliefs concerning pediatric anemia can guide future anemia control guidelines at the primary care level for pediatric patients in Peru.

RESUMO

Introduction: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) is defined as a mechanical chemical process that results in a cumulative loss of hard tissue without the involvement of bacteria. This process may occur in permanent and deciduous teeth and may also reach the dentin tissue. Patients who report chronic diseases, such as respiratory allergy and bronchial asthma, or recurrent acute diseases, such as tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and otitis, commonly use drugs for prolonged periods; thus, more attention should be given to the dental aspects since the drugs may cause undesirable effects. Objective: This paper aims to report and discuss a clinical case of a nine-year-old, male, Caucasian, asthmatic patient who continually uses anti-asthmatic medications and has developed ETW. Case report: According to the patient's needs, oral hygiene instructions (use of fluoride stannous dentifrice, dental floss, and topical fluoride applications), daily use of mouthwash solution containing 0.05% sodium fluoride, and dietary guidance were recommended. Conclusion: An early and accurate diagnosis of ETW lesions and recognition of specific etiological factors allow the professional to elaborate an individualized prevention and control program for ETW progression.

To describe the nutritional status and the environmental and health conditions of the Pataxó children from five villages of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Among the under 10 years old, weight and height/length were classified according to the growth references of World Health Organization. Questionnaires evaluating environmental conditions of the households and health conditions of under 5 years old were based in the First National Survey of Indigenous People's Health and Nutrition. Among the 70 children evaluated (93.3%), 34 were under 5 years old. Nutritional deficits were not observed and overweight was registered for 11.4% of the children. Most of the children (74.3%) lived in households with electric energy, 95% in households with toilets and 52.9% in households that threw waste in septic tanks. Six or more antenatal appointments were reported by 82.4% of the mothers of the under five years old and 91.2% started the antenatal appointments within the first trimester of pregnancy. Among the causes of hospitalizations in the previous 12 months (23.5%), only one was due to diarrhea and none to respiratory infection. Universal coverage was observed for the majority of the vaccines. The absence of nutritional deficits among the Pataxó children may be associated to better housing and sanitation conditions and coverage of basic childhood health actions when compared to the conditions reported by the First National Survey of Indigenous People's Health and Nutrition and related studies with other specific indigenous peoples. The current study aims to back discussions and measures to improve the nutritional status of indigenous children in Brazil.

The aim of the present study was to assess, by means of Raman spectroscopy, the repair of complete surgical tibial fractures fixed with wire osteosynthesis (WO) treated or not with infrared laser (λ780 nm) or infrared light emitting diode (LED) (λ850 ± 10 nm) lights, 142.8 J/cm2 per treatment, associated or not to the use of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) cement. Surgical tibial fractures were created on 18 rabbits, and all fractures were fixed with WO and some groups were grafted with MTA. Irradiated groups received lights at every other day during 15 days, and all animals were sacrificed after 30 days, being the tibia removed. The results showed that only irradiation with either laser or LED influenced the peaks of phosphate hydroxyapatite (~ 960 cm-1). Collagen (~ 1450 cm-1) and carbonated hydroxyapatite (~ 1070 cm-1) peaks were influenced by both the use of MTA and the irradiation with either laser or LED. It is concluded that the use of either laser or LED phototherapy associated to MTA cement was efficacious on improving the repair of complete tibial fractures treated with wire osteosynthesis by increasing the synthesis of collagen matrix and creating a scaffold of calcium carbonate (carbonated hydroxyapatite-like) and the subsequent deposition of phosphate hydroxyapatite.
