RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency of obesity and cardiometabolic risk in schoolchildren under ten years old. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study with schoolchildren (n=639) aged five to ten years in a municipally of southern of Brazil. The cardiometabolic risk was calculated from values of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), diastolic (DBP) and systolic blood pressure (SBP), blood glucose levels, triglycerides and total cholesterol (TC). Odds ratio (OR), Spearman correlation and principal component analysis (PCA) were analyzed. RESULTS: Independent of sex, elevated WC and BMI were related to higher values of SBP, DBP, and TC in schoolchildren. The frequency of cardiometabolic risk was 6.0% in girls and 9.9% in boys. Schoolchildren with elevated values of SBP, triglycerides and TC presented high OR for cardiometabolic risk. PCA indicated that schoolchildren with high WC (p>80) presented more frequently altered glucose levels, triglycerides, and TC. CONCLUSIONS: Obesity, especially when associated with elevated WC, is related to metabolic dysfunctions and cardiometabolic risk in schoolchildren under ten years of age. These findings indicate the urgency of stablishing metabolic risk for this age group, enabling early diagnosis and adequate treatment, to prevent the development of diabetes and cardiovascular dysfunction throughout life.

RESUMO

AIM: to compare the impact of Roux's Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) and Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) techniques on body weight reduction over 1 and 5 years after bariatric surgery in obese patients in the state of Paraná. METHODS: longitudinal and retrospective study, conducted between January 2010 and December 2013, with 737 patients of both sexes submitted to RYGB or SG and evaluated in the preoperative, 1 and 5 years after bariatric surgery (BS). Age, height, body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), biochemical and pressure parameters were recorded. RESULTS: of the total of patients, men represented lower frequency, were slightly older, with higher body weight, BMI and worse metabolic and pressure conditions than women in pre-BS (p<0.05). Regardless of sex, RYGB and SG were effective in promoting body weight reduction and BMI in 1 and 5 years after BS; the RYGB technique had greater impact on these variables in both sexes (p<0.05). The highest percentage of lost weight was observed in women who underwent the RYGB technique in the first year after BS. Five years after BS, the RYGB technique promoted a higher rate of body weight reduction in men and women compared to the SG technique (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: regardless of sex, the RYGB technique promotes a higher degree of body weight reduction and BMI over time compared to the SG; having its biggest impacts in the 1 year after BS, especially in women.

RESUMO

In this study, the risk factors associated with stillbirth in sows were identified and their odds ratio assessed. For this purpose, 587 farrowings on Farm A and 929 on Farm B were monitored, and the sow parity, body condition score, farrowing duration, total number of piglets born, numbers of live births, stillbirths, and mummified piglets, obstetric interventions, and piglet sex and weight were recorded. At the end of farrowing, piglets classified as stillborn were necropsied to confirm the diagnosis. Consequently, 5.49% of the piglets on Farm A and 5.10% of those on Farm B were stillborn. On both farms, sows with a high parity, prolonged farrowing, and a large litter size had the highest odds ratio of stillbirths. On Farm B, farrowing intervention through the use of vaginal palpation and oxytocin increased the odds of stillbirth by 1.7 and 2.5 times, respectively. Heavy litters increased the odds of stillbirth by 1.4 times. Additionally, low-birth-weight piglets were 2.3 and 3.1 times more likely than their medium-birth-weight and high-birth-weight counterparts, respectively, to be stillborn. In conclusion, on both farms, the risk factors associated with stillbirth were a high parity, a large litter size, and prolonged farrowing.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Can an anaemic state modify adiposity and metabolic parameters in hypothalamic obese rats? What is the main finding and its importance? Hypothalamic obese rats do not display iron deficiency. However, the pharmacological induction of anaemia in hypothalamic obese rats resulted in reduced adiposity, characterized by a decrease in subcutaneous white and brown adipose tissue depots. These findings suggest that iron imbalance in obesity may elevate lipolysis. ABSTRACT: Iron imbalance is frequent in obesity. Herein, we evaluated the impact of anaemia induced by phenylhydrazine on adiposity and metabolic state of hypothalamic obese rats. Hypothalamic obesity was induced by high doses of monosodium glutamate (MSG; 4 g/kg) administered to neonatal male rats (n = 20). Controls (CTL; non-obese rats) received equimolar saline (n = 20). Rats were weaned at 21 days of life. At 70 days, half of the rats received three intraperitoneal doses of phenylhydrazine (PHZ; 40 mg/kg/dose) or saline solution. Body weight and food intake were followed for 4 weeks after PHZ administration. At 92 days, rats were killed and blood was collected for microcapillary haematocrit (Hct) analysis and plasma quantification of glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol and iron levels. The liver, the spleen, and the white (WAT) and brown (BAT) adipose tissues were excised, weighed and used for histology. MSG-treated rats developed obesity, hypertriglyceridaemia and insulin resistance, compared to CTL rats, without changes in iron levels and Hct. PHZ administration reduced plasma iron levels and promoted similar tissue injuries in the spleen and liver from MSG and CTL rats. However, in MSG-treated rats, PHZ decreased fasting glucose levels and Hct, as well as diminishing the subcutaneous WAT and BAT mass. Although MSG-obesity does not affect plasma iron levels and Hct by itself, PHZ-induced anaemia associated with obesity induces a marked drop in subcutaneous WAT and BAT mass, suggesting that iron imbalance may lead to increased lipolytic responses in obese rats, compared to lean rats.

Objective: Several light sources have been used since the light-curing materials were introduced in dentistry. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have become popular as the main option for the polymerization of restorative materials. This literature review aimed to evaluate the influence of second and third generation Light-emitting Diode (LEDs) sources on the hardness of restorative composites. Literature Review: In the PubMed and Google Scholar databases, 239 scientific papers in English were pre-selected between 2010 and 2020 using light-curing, LED light sources, and dental LEDs. After reading, 37 articles were selected to compose the review. Several studies have pointed out significant differences in the hardness of the tested restorative composites, both on the top and base surfaces. However, these differences were more associated with characteristics such as: LED conservation conditions, irradiance, curing time, the emission spectrum of the devices and their compatibility with the photoinitiator used in the composite. Final Considerations: Thus, it can be considered that monitoring the condition of the device and the correct choice of light sources according to the composite to be used is essential to maximize the hardness of the restorative composites, because although third-generation devices are preferably indicated for composites with alternative photoinitiators, devices that emit blue light have advantages when the composite is activated only by Camphorquinone.(AU)

RESUMO

The vagus nerve (VN) and spleen represent a complex interface between neural and immunological functions, affecting both energy metabolism and white adipose tissue (WAT) content. Here, we evaluated whether vagal and splenic axis participates in WAT mass regulation in obese and non-obese male Wistar rats. High doses of monosodium glutamate (M; 4 g/Kg) were administered during the neonatal period to induce hypothalamic lesion and obesity (M-Obese rats). Non-obese or Control (CTL) rats received equimolar saline. At 60 days of life, M-Obese and CTL rats were randomly distributed into experimental subgroups according to the following surgical procedures: sham, subdiaphragmatic vagotomy (SV), splenectomy (SPL), and SV + SPL (n = 11 rats/group). At 150 days of life and after 12 h of fasting, rats were euthanized, blood was collected, and the plasma levels of glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, insulin, and interleukin 10 (IL10) were analyzed. The visceral and subcutaneous WAT depots were excised, weighed, and histologically evaluated for number and size of adipocytes as well as IL10 protein expression. M-Obese rats showed higher adiposity, hyperinsulinemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and insulin resistance when compared with CTL groups (p < 0.05). In CTL and M-Obese rats, SV reduced body weight gain and triglycerides levels, diminishing adipocyte size without changes in IL10 expression in WAT (p< 0.05). The SV procedure resulted in high IL10 plasma levels in CTL rats, but not in the M-Obese group. The splenectomy prevented the SV anti-adiposity effects, as well as blocked the elevation of IL10 levels in plasma of CTL rats. In contrast, neither SV nor SPL surgeries modified the plasma levels of IL10 and IL10 protein expression in WAT from M-Obese rats. In conclusion, vagotomy promotes body weight and adiposity reduction, elevating IL10 plasma levels in non-obese animals, in a spleen-dependent manner. Under hypothalamic obesity conditions, VN ablation also reduces body weight gain and adiposity, improving insulin sensitivity without changes in IL10 protein expression in WAT or IL10 plasma levels, in a spleen-independent manner. Our findings indicate that the vagal-spleen axis influence the WAT mass in a health state, while this mechanism seems to be disturbed in hypothalamic obese animals.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To conduct an integrative review in order to understand the repercussions of the social stigma of overweight on the health of adults and adolescents. METHODS: The international protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis studies PRISMA was adopted to guide the writing of this review. The databases used were PubMed, Psycinfo, SciELO, Medline, Lilacs and Pepsic, considering studies published in the period from 2000 to 2020. Sixty-seven (67) articles were analyzed, and 4 categories emerged: repercussions on physical well-being; repercussions on social well-being; repercussions on mental well-being; and mixed category (physical and psychological impact). RESULTS: In the vast majority of studies analyzed, weight stigma had a negative impact on the different spheres that make up the health construct, that is, the physical, social and mental spheres. CONCLUSIONS: The consequences of weight stigma are a source of intense suffering, with an impact that reduces the quality of life of individuals who experience stigmatization, involving physical, emotional and social aspects.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of autonomic vagal and splenic activities on renal histomorphometric aspects in obese rats. METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were used, of which, 24 received subcutaneous injections of monosodium glutamate (MSG) during the first 5 days of life (4 g/kg body weight) and six control animals received injections of saline solution (CON). Five experimental groups were organized (n = 6/group): falsely-operated control (CON-FO); falsely-operated obese (MSG-FO); vagotomized obese (MSG-VAG); splenectomized obese (MSG-SPL); vagotomized and splenectomized obese (MSG-VAG-SPL). RESULTS: The MSG-FO group animals showed a significant reduction in body weight and nasal-anal length when compared to CON-FO group animals (p < 0.05). The MSG-VAG-SPL group showed significant reduced in most biometric parameters associated with obesity. Falsely-operated obese animals showed a significant reduction in renal weight, glomerular diameters, glomerular tuff and capsule areas and Bowman's space compared to CON-FO group animals (p < 0.05). There was a significant reduction in diameter, glomerular tuft and capsule areas, and Bowman's space in MSG-VAG, MSG-SPL, MSG-VAG-SPL groups when compared to the MSG-FO group. CONCLUSIONS: Vagotomy associated with splenectomy induces a reduction in the adiposity and causes histological changes in the kidney of obese rats.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To associate dietary patterns and food neophobia in low-income preschoolers. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study using a semi-structured questionnaire for socio-demographic data, birth conditions and breast-feeding history. Food neophobia was assessed using an adapted version of the Child Food Neophobia Scale. Children's nutritional status was assessed using BMI-for-age and height-for-age Z-scores. Dietary patterns were estimated using a semi-quantitative FFQ through exploratory factor analysis. Multiple linear regression was used to test for an association between food neophobia and dietary pattern adherence. SETTING: Philanthropic childhood education schools in Aracaju, an urban community in northeastern Brazil, between July and December 2017. PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred fourteen children aged 3-6 years and their parents. RESULTS: The percentages of low/medium and high food neophobia among preschoolers were 85·9 % and 11·2 %, respectively. Children with high food neophobia more frequently consumed ultra-processed foods rich in sugars (snacks, filled and unfilled cookies and sweets), as well as protein-rich foods (white meat, cheese and yogurt). Three dietary patterns were identified (traditional, snacks and school snacks). Children with a high level of neophobia had lower adherence to traditional dietary patterns. CONCLUSIONS: A high level of food neophobia among socially vulnerable preschoolers is an eating behaviour related to unhealthy eating and is associated with the poorest diet in typical foods.

RESUMO

This study was done to determine the best value of the total electrolyte balance (BET) concerning the variables of performance and egg quality of the laying hens. We investigated 240 Hy-Line Brown laying hens, of 30 to 46 weeks of age, adopting the completely randomized experimental design, which included five treatments (1000, 1250, 1500, 1750 and 2000 μeq / kg), 8 repetitions and 6 birds per unit. The performance and quality of the birds eggs were evaluated in the different treatments. The results were subjected to the analysis of variance and, wherever significant effect was noted, the regression equations were estimated, taking into account the electrolyte balance (μeq / kg) as a concomitant variable, applying the SAS statistical program (2001). The consumption, production, and feed conversion variables by dozen eggs, final bird weight, egg density, yolk color, Haugh Unit, albumen weight, shell weight, and egg weight, were found to be unaffected by the experimental BET values. The values of the feed conversion per egg mass, yolk weight and uniformity were affected by the different BETs. The electrolyte balance values showing minimum feed conversion, higher yolk weight, and better uniformity were, respectively, BET = 1400, 1330, and 1250 in μeq / kg of loads at the different temperatures. From the regression equations, the value indicated was BET=1390 for the 30- to 46-week-old laying hens. The electrolyte balance of the diet was found to affect the laying hens in terms of performance and egg quality.(AU)

ABSTRACT: This study was done to determine the best value of the total electrolyte balance (BET) concerning the variables of performance and egg quality of the laying hens. The performance and quality of the birds' eggs were evaluated in the different treatments. The electrolyte balance of the diet was found to affect the laying hens in terms of performance and egg quality.

We evaluated the effects of splenectomy on glucose homeostasis in obese and non-obese rats. Obesity was induced by subcutaneous injections of monosodium glutamate (MSG; 4g/kg) in neonatal rats. Control (non-obese) animals received equimolar saline. Splenectomy (SPL) was performed at 21 or 60 days of life (SPL21 and SPL60) in MSG obese and non-obese groups. Glucose tolerance, insulin resistance (IR), adiposity, histology of white adipose tissue (WAT) depots and glucose-induced insulin secretion (GIIS) in isolated pancreatic islets were evaluated at 90 days of life. In non-obese, despite of hyperphagia, the spleen ablation reduced body weight gain and energy efficiency, without changes in GIIS or IR. Slight reduction in glucose tolerance and augmented adipocyte size in subcutaneous WAT was noted in non-obese SPL21 group. In MSG-SPL21 rats was observed augmented body weight gain and energy efficiency, without alter adipocyte size. In contrast, MSG-SPL60 rats had lower body weight gain, reduced energy efficiency and smaller adipocyte size in WAT visceral depot in relation to MSG non-operated. Spleen ablation reduced insulin plasma levels in the MSG-SPL21 and MSG-SPL60 groups. Moreover, splenectomy reduced GIIS and improved glucose tolerance in MSG-SPL21 group. In MSG-SPL60 rats were observed reduction in IR, without changes in GIIS, despite of elevated glucokinase expression in pancreatic islets. In conclusion, spleen ablation reduces body weight in non-obese rats and slightly modifies glucose homeostasis. In contrast, in MSG-induced obesity, absence of the spleen can ameliorate glucose tolerance and reduce insulin secretion, improving insulin sensitivity.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: The study sought to know mothers' perception of neonates on lingual frenotomy performed by a dental care program of a university hospital in Paraná Methods: It is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach, developed with mothers of newborns and whose children were submitted to a lingual frenzy procedure during maternal hospitalization (n = 09). Data were collected through a focus group interview and analyzed according to the content analysis technique Results: It was identified five thematic nuclei linked to lingual frenotomy in infants: 'maternal impressions agaisnt the professional indication'; 'Family trial'; 'Need to perform frenotomy'; 'Feelings after the completion of the frenotomy'; 'Changes in baby behavior'. The main maternal impressions were linked to fear and suffering related to the babies reaction. Regarding to the need to perform the lingual frenotomy, the intrinsic opinions were initially divergent, however, all evidenced that the procedure was indispensable for the baby, mainly for speech. After the frenotomy completion, the mothers reported well-being for the improvement in the lingual physiology and babies' quality of life, with emphasis on breastfeeding and improvement in the baby's behavior Conclusion: The results obtained are encouraging for the hospital managers to consider, in their clinical protocols, the technique of lingual frenotomy in newborns, with a view to facilitating mothers' access to the procedure, qualifying breastfeeding and consequently expanding the maternal and child bond.

Introduction: Although studies have shown high diagnostic accuracy of coronary tomography (CT) in detecting coronary artery disease (CAD),data on the prognostic value of this method in patients with no significant coronary obstruction are limited. Objective: To evaluate the value of CT in predicting adverse events in patients with suspected CAD and no significant coronary obstruction. Methods: We prospectively evaluated 440 patients between January 2008 and July 2013 by MDCT, diagnosed with no significant obstruction or no atherosclerotic coronary obstruction with an average follow-up of 33 months. The outcomes evaluated were: cardiac death, myocardial infarction, unstable angina associated with hospitalization or coronary artery bypass grafting. Results: Of the 440 patients studied, 295 (67%) were men with mean age 55.9 ± 12.0 years. Non-significant obstruction was found in 152 (35%) of the patients and there were 49 (11%) outcomes. In the multivariate analysis using the Cox regression model, the predictors of clinical outcomes werenon-significant obstruction on CT (hazard ratio 3.51; 95% CI 1.73 — 7.8; p <0.01), age and hypertension. Non-significant obstruction on CT wasassociated with adverse clinical outcomes and survival analysis showed a significant difference (log-rank 24.6; p <0.01) in predicting these outcomes. Conclusion: The detection of non-significant atherosclerotic obstruction by CT was associated with the presence of adverse events in patients withsuspected CAD, which may prove useful in the risk stratification of these patients.

RESUMO

Epoxy-carvone is a monoterpene present in essential oils of various plants. It is a derivative of carvone, which has an epoxy group instead of the α- and β-unsaturated ketone group present in carvone. As recent studies have shown that several alcohol terpenes and compounds containing α, β-unsaturated ketone groups present antiulcer effect, the main of the present study was to evaluate the antiulcer effect of epoxy-carvone. The models of ulcers induced by ethanol and indomethacin were used in this study. Epoxy-carvone at the dose of 1 mg/kg did not present antiulcer effect against ulcer induced by ethanol, but at the doses of 10, 30 and 50 mg/kg it presented gastroprotective effect in both ulcer models. Epoxy-carvone also did not affect the gastric secretion in the pylorus ligation test. Moreover, pretreatment with indomethacin or L-nitroarginine methyl ester did not reverse the gastroprotection produced by this monoterpene. This study showed that epoxy-carvone presents antiulcer effect and suggests that this effect does not involve either antisecretory activity or increase of the nitric oxide and prostaglandin synthesis.
