Wheelchair rugby was created as part of the rehabilitation for patients with spinal cord injury. The biomechanical analysis of wheelchair propulsion (WP) in these athletes seems to be a key element to understand the reasons behind musculoskeletal injuries. This case reports study aimed to describe the electromyographic activity and kinematic parameters of the shoulder during the propulsion phases on the wheelchair in two Paralympic rugby players (A1 and A2) with spinal cord injury. Myoelectric activity (three portions of the deltoid, biceps and triceps brachii) and kinematics of the shoulder were assessed during the push (PP) and recovery (RP) phases. These variables were calculated considering ten propulsion cycles by each athlete. The results showed a different muscle activation between players, A1 described a high average amplitude of the anterior deltoid (PP = 58.44 ± 16.35%MVC; RP = 43.16 ± 13.48%MVC) in both propulsion phases, while A2 generated high average activity of triceps brachii (29.28 ± 10.63%MVC) and middle deltoid (46.53 ± 14.48%MVC), during PP and RP, respectively. At the same time, the player with a C7-T1 spinal cord injury (A2) showed a higher range of motion in the three plans, considering both propulsion phases.

This study aimed to identify Pythium and Phytopythium species from weeds collected in vegetable fields and test their pathogenicity. Weeds with symptoms of damping-off, root rot or wilt were sampled in the Brazilian states of Ceará, Goiás and Pernambuco, as well as in the Distrito Federal, for isolation and identification of the causal agents. Once isolated, colonies with typical Pythium and Phytopythium characteristics grew in selective V8 medium. Procedures for species identification included morphology and amplification of the ITS and Cox II regions, which were compared with other accessions available at GenBank. The phylogenetic relationships among the isolates and pathogenicity to their original hosts were evaluated. Six Pythium species were identified: P. aphanidermatum, P. oopapillum, P. orthogonon, P. ultimum var. ultimum, P. myriotylum and P. sylvaticum, and two species of Phytopythium, Phy. chamaehyphon and Phy. oedochilum. In the pathogenicity tests, the 10 weed hosts showed symptoms of damping-off or root rot after inoculation, with exception of Portulaca oleraceae in which none of the isolates was pathogenic. Therefore, common weeds in vegetable fields areas can host different Pythium and Phytopythium species and play an important role in the epidemiology of vegetable diseases, in particular on pathogen survival and population increase.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to verify the agreement between body fat percentage (%BF) values evaluated by air displacement plethysmograph (ADP) and body adiposity index (BAI) in adults with Down's syndrome (DS). SUBJECTS/METHODS: Forty-five adults with DS volunteered to participate in this study (19 women; age 28.7±8.5 years and 26 men; age 29.1±8.8 years). The %BF was measured by ADP (%BFADP) and estimated by anthropometric measures [%BF=(hip circumference/height)1.5-18] (%BFBAI). Agreement between methods was evaluated by paired t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS: Although high correlation coefficients were found between %BFADP and %BFBAI for women (r=0.78, P<0.05) and men (r=0.87, P<0.05), significant differences were observed between methods for both sexes (38.9±8.9 vs 42.5±8.5% for women, and 25.8±11.3 vs 32.6±5.4% for men in %BFADP and %BFBAI, respectively). Moreover, Bland-Altman analysis showed that the mean error estimate was +3.6 (95%CI, -7.59 to 14.79) in women and +6.74 (95%CI, -7.25 to 20.72) in men. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that BAI seems to be a limited method to evaluate %BF in women and in men with DS.

Imposex incidence, organotin tissue levels, and sex steroid (free and esterified testosterone and estradiol) levels were assessed in Stramonita haemastoma from Babitonga Bay (Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil). The imposex levels showed a reduction when compared to a previous evaluation performed in the same area. In spite of that, the detected imposex incidence indicated the occurrence of tributyltin (TBT) inputs that were still able to produce endocrine disruption in local gastropods. In addition, a high level of organotins was observed in tissues of imposexed females. These females also showed a hormonal imbalance, especially in the total testosterone/total estradiol ratio. These findings obtained under realistic field conditions suggest that the steroid pathway could be responsible by the imposex induction after exposure to TBT. In this case, measurements of sex steroid levels can be an additional evidence for monitoring sites and impose affected gastropod populations.

Although the intake of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) intake by athletes prevents soreness, little is known concerning their role in exercise performance. This study assessed the effects of ibuprofen intake on an exhaustive protocol test after 6 weeks of swimming training in rats. Animals were divided into sedentary and training groups. After training, animals were subdivided into two subsets: saline or ibuprofen. Afterwards, three repeated swimming bouts were performed by the groups. Ibuprofen (15 mg/kg) was administered once a day. Pain measurements were performed and inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters were assayed in cerebral cortex and gastrocnemius muscle. Training, ibuprofen administration, or both combined (P < 0.05; 211 ± 18s, 200 ± 31s, and 279 ± 23s) increased exercise time to exhaustion. Training decreased the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity (P < 0.05; 149 ± 11) in cerebral cortex. Ibuprofen intake decreased the AChE activity after exhaustive protocol test in trained and sedentary rats (P < 0.05; 270 ± 60; 171 ± 38; and 273 ± 29). It also prevented neuronal tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin (IL 1ß) increase. Fatigue elicited by this exhaustive protocol may involve disturbances of the central nervous system. Additive anti-inflammatory effects of exercise and ibuprofen intake support the hypothesis that this combination may constitute a more effective approach. In addition, ergogenic aids may be a useful means to prevent exercise-induced fatigue.

Complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (CRPS1) may be evoked by ischemia/reperfusion, eliciting acute and chronic pain that is difficult to treat. Despite this, the underlying mechanism of CRPS1 has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, the goal of this study is to evaluate the involvement of inflammation, oxidative stress, and the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) channel, a chemosensor of inflammation and oxidative substances, in an animal model of chronic post-ischemia pain (CPIP). Male Wistar rats were subjected to 3 h hind paw ischemia/reperfusion (CPIP model). Different parameters of nociception, inflammation, ischemia, and oxidative stress were evaluated at 1 (acute) and 14 (chronic) days after CPIP. The effect of a TRPA1 antagonist and the TRPA1 immunoreactivity were also observed after CPIP. In the CPIP acute phase, we observed mechanical and cold allodynia; increased levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (hind paw), ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) (serum), protein carbonyl (hind paw and spinal cord), lactate (serum), and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE, hind paw and spinal cord); and higher myeloperoxidase (MPO) and N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase) activities (hind paw). In the CPIP chronic phase, we detected mechanical and cold allodynia and increased levels of IMA (serum), protein carbonyl (hind paw and spinal cord), and 4-HNE (hind paw and spinal cord). TRPA1 antagonism reduced mechanical and cold allodynia 1 and 14 days after CPIP, but no change in TRPA1 immunoreactivity was observed. Different mechanisms underlie acute (inflammation and oxidative stress) and chronic (oxidative stress) phases of CPIP. TRPA1 activation may be relevant for CRPS1/CPIP-induced acute and chronic pain.

The transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) is expressed in peripheral and spinal terminals of sensory neurons, jointly to the vanilloid receptor (TRPV1). A relevant peripheral role of TRPA1 receptor has been implicated in a variety of processes, including the detection of noxious cold, and diverse painful stimulus, but the functional role of TRPA1 receptor in nociceptive transmission at spinal cord in vivo is poorly known. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether the glutamatergic system is involved in the transmission of nociceptive stimulus induced for a TRPA1 agonist in the rat spinal cord. We observed that cinnamaldehyde, a TRPA1 agonist, on spinal cord synaptosomes leads to an increase in [Ca(2+)](i) and a rapid release of glutamate, but was not able to change the specific [(3)H]-glutamate binding. In addition, spinally administered cinnamaldehyde produced heat hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia in rats. This behavior was reduced by the co-injection (i.t.) of camphor (TRPA1 antagonist) or MK-801 (N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist) to cinnamaldehyde. Besides, the pretreatment with resiniferatoxin (RTX), a potent TRPV1 agonist, abolished the cinnamaldehyde-induced heat hyperalgesia. Here, we showed that intrathecal RTX results in a decrease in TRPA1 and TRPV1 immunoreactivity in dorsal root ganglion. Collectively, our results demonstrate the pertinent participation of spinal TRPA1 in the possible enhancement of glutamatergic transmission of nociceptive signals leading to increase of the hypersensitivity, here observed as heat hyperalgesia. Then the modulation of spinal TRPA1 might be a valuable target in painful conditions associated with central pain hypersensitivity.

Supercritical fluid extraction has been widely employed in the extraction of high purity substances. In this study, we used the technology to obtain oil from seeds from a variety of grapes, from vinification residues generated in the Southern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This work encompasses three varieties of Vitis vinifera (Moscato Giallo, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon) and two of Vitis labrusca (Bordô e Isabel), harvested in 2005 and 2006. We obtained the highest oil content from Bordô (15.40%) in 2005 and from Merlot (14.66%), 2006. The biggest concentration of palmitic, stearic, and linoleic acids was observed in Bordô, 2005, and in Bordô, Merlot, and Moscato Giallo, 2006. Bordô showed the highest concentration of oleic acid and α-tocopherol in both seasons too. For the equivalent of procyanidins, we did not notice significant difference among the varieties from the 2005 harvest. In 2006, both varieties Isabel and Cabernet Sauvignon showed a value slightly lower than the other varieties. The concentration of total phenolics was higher in Bordô and Cabernet Sauvignon. The presence of these substances is related to several important pharmacological properties and might be an alternative to conventional processes to obtain these bioactives.

BACKGROUND: High sodium salicylate doses can cause reversible hearing loss and tinnitus, possibly due to reduced outer hair cell electromotility. Sodium salicylate is known to alter outer hair cell structure and function. This study determined the reversibility and cochlear recovery time after administration of an ototoxic sodium salicylate dose to guinea pigs with normal cochlear function. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective experimental investigation. METHODS: All animals received a single 500 mg sodium salicylate dose, but with different durations of action. Function was evaluated before drug administration and immediately before sacrifice. Cochleae were processed and viewed using scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: Changes in outer hair cell function were observed to be present 2 hours after drug administration, with recovery of normal anatomy beginning after 24 hours. Subsequently, derangement and distortion of cilia reduced, with effects predominantly in row three. At 168 hours, cilia were near-normal but with mild distortions which interfered with normal cochlear physiology. CONCLUSIONS: Ciliary changes persisted for up to 168 hours after ototoxic sodium salicylate administration.

BACKGROUND: Transtympanic administration of gentamicin may be suitable to achieve unilateral vestibular ablation, in order to control unilateral Ménière's disease. In low doses, gentamicin appears to affect selectively the vestibular system, with relative sparing of the cochlea. An experimental study on guinea pigs was conducted to determine what single dose of gentamicin would produce a unilateral vestibular organ lesion when applied to the middle ear. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental and prospective. METHODS: Four groups of guinea pigs received different gentamicin doses (1, 5, 10 and 25 mg) administered to the middle ear. The animals' vestibular organs were then assessed by scanning electron microscopy, in order to quantify the level of vestibular damage. RESULTS: Study of the utricular macula and the ampullar crista of the lateral semicircular canal revealed vestibular neuroepithelial lesions in all infused ears. CONCLUSIONS: The severity of the vestibular neuroepithelial lesions was dose-dependent. Lower gentamicin doses were observed to damage vestibular structures more than cochlear structures.

The wax hydrocarbon fractions of native Butia and Syagrus species collected from Palms in different regions of the of Rio Grande do Sul state (Brazil) and in Rocha (Uruguay) were analyzed to evaluate their potential as chemotaxonomic markers. The wax was extracted with chloroform and the resulting wax was fractionated by preparative TLC. The hydrocarbon fractions were analyzed by GC-MS. Statistical analyses were completed with the Statistica 5.0 program. The total crude wax yields averaged 0.31% w.w-1 dried leaves for Butia samples and 0.28% for Syagrus samples. The linear hydrocarbons represented on average 15% of the total waxes in the case of Butia samples and 13.7% in Syagrus samples. Hentriacontane and triacontane were the main components of all samples. The comparison of the means showed significant differences among Butia and Syagrus samples, and amongst Butia samples collected in different localities. In the case of the Syagrus collections no consistent groupings could be made. In the case of Butia samples the formation of three groupings could be observed, which were consistent with the species described for their geographical distribution. These results are discussed in the paper.

Frações de hidrocarbonetos das ceras de espécies nativas de Butia e Syagrus coletadas de palmeiras em diferentes regiões do Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil) e em Rocha (Uruguai) foram analisadas para avaliar o seu potencial como marcadores quiomiotaxonômicos. As ceras foram extraídas com clorofórmio e fracionadas por TLC preparativo. As frações de hidrocarbonetos foram analisadas por CG-EM. As análises estatísticas foram realizadas com auxílio do programa Statistica 5.0. O rendimento total de cera das folhas secas foi de 0,31% g.g–1 para as amostras de Butia e de 0,28% para Syagrus. Os hidrocarbonetos lineares representaram em média 15 e 13% do total das ceras para Butia e Syagrus, respectivamente. Hentriacontano e triacontano foram os compostos majoritários em todas as amostras. A comparação de médias mostrou diferenças significativas entre as amostras de Butia e Syagrus e entre as amostras de Butia coletadas em diferentes localidades. As amostras de Syagrus não formaram agrupamentos relacionados com os locais de coleta. Já no caso de Butia, três agrupamentos puderam ser observados e são consistentes com a distribuição geográfica desta espécie. Estes resultados são discutidos no trabalho.

In the case of Butia samples the formation of three groupings could be observed, which were consistent with the species described for their geographical distribution. These results are discussed in the paper.


Frações de hidrocarbonetos das ceras de espécies nativas de Butia e Syagrus coletadas de palmeiras em diferentes regiões do Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil) e em Rocha (Uruguai) foram analisadas para avaliar o seu potencial como marcadores quiomiotaxonômicos. As ceras foram extraídas com clorofórmio e fracionadas por TLC preparativo. As frações de hidrocarbonetos foram analisadas por CG-EM. As análises estatísticas foram realizadas com auxílio do programa Statistica 5.0. O rendimento total de cera das folhas secas foi de 0,31% g.g-1 para as amostras de Butia e de 0,28% para Syagrus. Os hidrocarbonetos lineares representaram em média 15 e 13% do total das ceras para Butia e Syagrus, respectivamente. Hentriacontano e triacontano foram os compostos majoritários em todas as amostras. A comparação de médias mostrou diferenças significativas entre as amostras de Butia e Syagrus e entre as amostras de Butia coletadas em diferentes localidades. As amostras de Syagrus não formaram agrupamentos relacionados com os locais de coleta. Já no caso de Butia, três agrupamentos puderam ser observados e são consistentes com a distribuição geográfica desta espécie. Estes resultados são discutidos no trabalho.

This study investigated the effects of changing cadence and workload on pedaling technique. Eight cyclists were evaluated during an incremental maximal cycling and two 30-minute submaximal trials at 60% and 80% of maximal power output (W(60%) and W(80%), respectively). During submaximal 30-minute trials, they cycled for 10 minutes at a freely chosen cadence (FCC), 10 minutes at a cadence 20% above FCC (FCC+20%), and 10 minutes at a cadence 20% below FCC (FCC-20%). Pedal forces and kinematics were evaluated. The resultant force (RF), effective force (EF), index of effectiveness (IE) and IE during propulsive and recovery phase (IEprop and IErec, respectively) were computed. For W(60%), FCC-20% and FCC presented higher EFmean (69+/-9 N and 66+/-14 N, respectively) than FCC+20% (52+/-14 N). FCC presented the highest IEprop (81+/-4%) among the cadences (74+/-4 and 78+/-5% for FCC-20% and FCC+20%, respectively). For W(80%), FCC presented higher EFmean (81+/-5 N) than FCC+20% (72 +/- 10 N). The FCC-20% presented the lower IEprop (71+/-7%) among the cadences. The EFmin was higher for W(80%) than W(60%) for all cadences. The IE was higher at W (80%) (61+/-5%) than W (60%) (54+/-9%) for FCC+20% (all p<0.05). Lower cadences were more effective during the recovery phase for both intensities and FCC was the best technique during the propulsive phase.

AIM: This study investigated the pedaling asymmetry during a 40-km cycling time-trial (TT). METHODS: Six sub-elite competitive male cyclists pedaled a SRM Training Systems cycle ergometer throughout a simulated 40-km TT. A SRM scientific crank dynamometer was used to measure the bilateral crank torque (N.m) and pedaling cadence (rpm). All data were analyzed into 4 stages with equal length obtained according to total time. Comparisons between each stage of the 40-km TT were made by an analysis of variance (ANOVA). Dominant (DO) and non-dominant (ND) crank peak torque asymmetry was determined by the equation: asymmetry index (AI%)=[(DO-ND)/DO] 100. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to verify the relationship between exercise intensity, mean and crank peak torque. RESULTS: The crank peak torque was significantly (P<0.05) greater in the 4th stage compared with other stages. During the stages 2 and 3, was observed the AI% of 13.51% and 17.28%, respectively. Exercise intensity (%VO(2max)) was greater for stage 4 (P<0.05) and was highly correlated with mean and crank peak torque (r=0.97 and r=0.92, respectively) for each stage. CONCLUSIONS: The DO limb was always responsible for the larger crank peak torque. It was concluded that pedaling asymmetry is present during a simulated 40-km TT and an increase on crank torque output and exercise intensity elicits a reduction in pedaling asymmetry.

Cerca de 15 por cento das espécies de Baccharis têm sido analisadas do ponto de vista fitoquímico, mas trabalhos envolvendo estudos de óleos essenciais têm sido pouco informados. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar espécies deste gênero, nativas do Rio Grande do Sul, e avaliar o potencial aromático de doze amostras coletadas em diferentes localidades do Estado. O óleo foi obtido por hidrodestilação em Clevenger por 1 hora a partir do material desidratado a 30°C por quatro dias. As análises em CG foram realizadas em equipamento HP6890 Series, equipado com processador de dados HP-Chemstation e coluna HP-Innowax, e, as análises em CG/EM foram realizadas em equipamento HP 6890/MSD5973, com software HP Chemstation e biblioteca Wiley 275 de espectros, com coluna de mesma polaridade. O melhor rendimento foi obtido em B. articulata com 0,5 por cento p/v. beta-Pineno foi identificado nas amostras de B. articulata (41,4 por cento a 52,8 por cento), e em B. cogata (27,2 por cento). Espatulenol esteve presente nas amostras de B. semiserrata (15,5 por cento e 25,5 por cento) e nas amostras de B. uncinella (47,7 por cento e 23,1 por cento). B. oxyodonta apresentou limoneno (24,3 por cento). Duas amostras de B. milleflora apresentaram espatulenol, enquanto que uma apresentou beta-pineno.


About 15 percent of the known Baccharis species have been phytochemically studied, but few studies regarding their essential oils have been reported. The present work aims to identify native species of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, and to evaluate their aromatic potential. Twelve samples were collected in different sites within the State. The essential oils were obtained by an one hour hydrodistillation in a Clevenger apparatus, using plant materials dried for four days at 30°C. The GC analyses were carried out with a HP6890 Series apparatus, equiped with a HP-Chemstation data processor and an HP-Innowax column. The GC/MS analyses were carried out with an HP 6890/MSD5973, equiped with an HP Chemstation and a Wiley 275 spectra library, using the same column as above. The best yield was those of B. articulata (0.5 percent v/w). beta-Pinene was identified as the main component in the samples from B. articulata (41.4 percent to 52.8 percent) and from B. cogata (27.2 percent). Spathulenol was present in the samples from B. semiserrata (15.5 percent and 25.5 percent) and those from B. uncinella (47.7 percent and 23.1 percent). B. oxyodonta showed limonene (24.3 percent). Two samples of B. milleflora had spathulenol as main component, but a third one had beta-pinene as main constituent.

BACKGROUND: Amikacin is a semisynthetic aminoglycoside. It acts against most of the microbial species. Amikacin limitation of the therapeutic application is the ototoxicity which promotes permanent lesions in the cochlear system. Aminoglycoside antibiotics have ototoxic potential. The target cells are preferentially the outer hair cells in the cochlear basal turns. Amynoglicoside antibiotics can quelate iron forming a complex with oxidate properties and promotes the formation of free radicals. Responsible for production of lesions in the hair cells. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present investigation was to determine whether the use of the aminoglycoside amikacin at small doses may lead to the occurrence of some types of resistance to or protection against ototoxicity of the drug by analyzing lesions to the organ of Corti by scanning electron microscopy. METHODS: The study was conducted on 31 guinea pigs that were divided into 4 groups, amikacin was administered intramuscularly. The groups consisted of: group A = control group: 5 animals (10 cochleae); group B = 5 animals (10 cochleae), amikacin 20 mg/kg/day for 30 days; group C = 7 animals (13 cochleae), amikacin 400 mg/kg/day for 12 days; group d = 14 animals (26 cochleae) amikacin 20 mg/kg/day for 30 days, followed by 400 mg/kg/day for 12 days. Histological studies were performed by scanning electron microscopy. Three cochleae were excluded. RESULTS: In groups A and B, the cells were normal in all cochleae, in group C there were extensive lesions of the 2 more basal turns, and in group D there was a significant reduction of lesions in the 2 more basal turns compared with group C, which had received the ototoxic dose of amikacin alone. CONCLUSION: We conclude that the non-ototoxic dose of amikacin administered before the ototoxic dose of the same antibiotic had a statistically significant protective effect on the 2 more basal turns of the guinea pig cochlea.

Os taninos são componentes polifenólicos encontrados em plantas, alimentos e bebidas, sendo utilizados como fonte de matéria-prima para várias indústrias, como por exemplo a farmacêutica e a alimentícia, no curtimento do couro, na produção de borrachas, no tratamento de água em barragens, entre outras. Em vista da importância deste grupo de compostos, algumas plantas aromáticas e medicinais cultivadas no Núcleo Agronômico do Instituto de Biotecnologia da Universidade de Caxias dos Sul foram avaliadas quanto ao teor de taninos totais: Angelica archangelica , Cinnamomun camphora var. linaloolifera fugita , Cymbopogon citratus, Lavandula dentata , Lippia alba, Rosmarinus officinalis e Thymus vulgaris, e esses foram comparados com o teor de taninos totais da Acacia mearnsii (acácia negra), planta utilizada para a extração de taninos. O processo de extração empregado foi a maceração com metanol e a quantificação foi realizada por espectrofotometria, utilizando-se o reagente de Folin Denis. A partir da curva de calibração ( por cento equivalente ao ácido tânico) foram obtidos os teores de taninos totais, que variaram de 0,01 por cento para Cymbopogom citratus a 18,9 por cento para Lippia alba.


Tannins are polyphenolic compounds present in plants which are also found in foods and beverages. They are specially used by pharmaceutical, food, leather and rubber industries, and also for water treatment. Considering the significance of this group of compounds, several of aromatic and medicinal plants cultivated in Northern Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, were tested for their total tannin content. Angelica archangelica , Cinnamomun camphora var. linaloolifera fugita , Cymbopogon citratus, Lavandula dentata , Lippia alba, Rosmarinus officinalis and Thymus vulgaris were analysed and compared with Acacia mearnsii (black wattle) which is industrially used for tannin extraction. The extraction procedure was made by macerating the plants in methanol, and the quantification was done using Folin Denis reagent and spectrophotometry. By using a calibration curve ( percent tannic acid equivalent) the total tannin contents range from 0.01 percent ( Cymbopogom citratus ) to 18.9 percent ( Lippia alba ).

Hair cells can be damaged by countless agents, among them aminoglycoside antibiotics. In the chick cochlea, the hair cell loss can be recovered by regeneration. The objectives of the present investigation were to study the time progression of injury caused by gentamicin and the regeneration process in chick hair cells. Gentamicin was administered in a single subcutaneous dose of 125 or 250 mg/kg to two groups of 3-day old chicks. The cochleae were processed for analysis by scanning electron microscopy on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 20th day after injection. The cellular sequence of degeneration and regeneration was studied. On the 20th day, most it he damaged cochlear area showed regenerated hair and support cells. Stereocilia and microvilli were observed on the apical surface of the regenerated hair cells.
