RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to determine the prevalence of periodontal disease and the needs for treatment in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) in a rural population. METHODS: a transversal descriptive study with bivariate analysis was carried out. Gender, age, smoking habit and blood glucose levels were obtained from the clinical files in 94 cases. A periodontal examination was carried out by the Periodontal Index of Community Treatment Needs. RESULTS: the ratio woman-man was 3:1. Age rate was from 35 to 75 years, with a mean of 53.4. Fifty two percent of the subjects had been diagnosed in the last five years; 78 percent of the subjects were moderately and badly controlled on diabetes parameters; 96.8 percent of the individuals had moderate to severe periodontal disease with the need for specialized periodontal treatment. CONCLUSIONS: the chronic mouth infections should be seriously considered for an adequate metabolic control of diabetic patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to know the prevalence of buccal lesions on type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and its association with blood glycemia levels. METHODS: descriptive cross-sectional study. Casual glycemia was practiced to 162 patients, who regularly attend public health services, and results from fasting blood glucose test were analyzed. A buccal examination and World Health Organization's community periodontal index and treatment needs (CPITN) was practiced. Descriptive statistics and bivaried analysis were used. RESULTS: the woman:man relation was 3:1, age range from 17 to 80 years. Out of 99 patients with laboratory glycemia, 76 % was poorly controlled; 99 % showed at least one buccal lesion: 93.2 %, periodontal disease; 73.4 %, xerostomia and 28.4 %, erythematous candidiasis. Having bad controlled glucose, a group with xerostomia and erythematous candidiasis and another showed xerostomia plus erythematous candidiasis plus periodontal disease (OR = 3.5 and a value of p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: presence of oral diseases is exhibited on patients with a poor glucose control. Medical attention results inefficient and insufficient and patients do not get orientation to understand their illness.
