RESUMO

The main purpose of this article is: given a score matrix called S, find out the joint proportional contribution of factors due to persons (conditions, situations, and so forth) and factors due to variables, for any sij observed score, where i identifies persons, and j, variables. This approach makes it possible a) to show that the same score in a given variable may have a different quantitative interpretation in terms of persons or conditions, and b) to find out how subjects differ in the way in which they relate variables.

RESUMO

A procedure to find out the relationship between systems of entities is described. The crux of the approach depends on projecting the systems to be compared on the same arbitrary hyperspace so that any two systems of entities can be related. The procedure described applies to data presented in square or rectangular non-singular matrices and provides a procedure to determine multiple regression coefficients, multiple correlations, canonical correlations and the relationships between the inner product of the row vectors and of the column vectors of the matrices involved. The operations described apply to raw values, deviation or standard scores, and may help in interdisciplinary research, though the risks involved in the blind application of a mathematical abstract formulation should not be ignored.

RESUMO

Investigating the influence the dimensions "Meaning", and "Logical Structure" feature in the process of solving verbally-presented problems is the purpose of this study. 120 13-year-old boys and girls were administered 12 problems built around two different logical structures with six different "Meaning" dimensions. The results indicate that the logical structure of the problems is an important factor when information processing is at stake.

RESUMO

Experimental results obtained by examining the diagnostic performance of students and doctors in different medical schools and different cultural environments are presented. The pertinent data were obtained using tests of diagnostic skills based on real cases. The technique requires asking questions (tactics) to obtain the information needed to reach a diagnosis so that the subject becomes an active searcher of information and the final answer is not the only element used to evaluate tactics. The results show significant differences in performance according to medical experience. Experts ask fewer questions than students or less-experienced doctors but maximize the information value by asking them at the proper time in the sequence. New evaluation procedures are described to characterize quantitatively each diagnostic tactic. Experimentally based theoretical considerations are made concerning the prediction and development of diagnostic talent, the structure of diagnostic processes and its training. New approaches to the problem are briefly sketched.
