RESUMO

The Amazon region is known for its continental dimension, water abundance, and especially for the rich biodiversity that this biome hosts. Among the thousands of plant species in the Amazon, many represent food sources. Among these, cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. ex Spreng.) K.Schum.) stands out as an iconic fruit with an exotic flavor, appreciated for its remarkable organoleptic properties. The present review aims to provide a comprehensive description of its biology, agronomical uses, nutritional values, chemical compositions, medicinal properties, and industrial applications. The search based on scientific articles demonstrates T. grandiflorum as a valuable ingredient for the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical sectors. Data analysis demonstrates that cupuaçu cultivation and processing contribute to the strengthening of local production chains and promotes the development of small communities, and thus the bioeconomy in the Amazon region. In this sense, since the last decade, cultivar improvement has required multidisciplinary efforts, resulting in disease-resistant plants with better productivity. Regarding its chemical composition, T. grandiflorum is a notable source of methylxanthine alkaloids, polyphenols, aroma compounds, and lipids. The presence of these compounds supports the use of cupuaçu in various products and help us to understand the potential health benefits of its consumption. Through the integration of all collected information, key gaps in basic and applied sciences were observed, highlighting the need for more research to uncover novel applications and products of T. grandiflorum. The development of new products based on biodiversity is fundamental to promoting environmental and economic sustainability, which are key steps to the survival of the Amazon rainforest. Therefore, this work summarizes the knowledge on this source and sheds light on a food source that is little known outside of the Amazon borders.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess maternal dietary food intake patterns, anthropometric measures, and multiple biochemical markers in women with gestational diabetes mellitus and pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence and to explore whether antedating gestational diabetes mellitus environment affects the pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence development in a cohort of pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence. METHODS: Maternal dietary information and anthropometric measurements were collected. At 24 wk of gestation, with a fasting venipuncture sample, current blood samples for biochemical markers of hormones, vitamins, and minerals were analyzed. The groups were compared in terms of numerical variables using analysis of variance for independent samples followed by multiple comparisons. RESULTS: Of the 900 pregnant women with complete data, pregnant women in the gestational diabetes mellitus pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence group had higher body mass index during pregnancy, arm circumference, and triceps skinfold than the non-gestational diabetes mellitus continent and non-gestational diabetes mellitus pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence groups, characterizing an obesogenic maternal environment. Regarding dietary food intake, significant increases in aromatic amino acids, branched-chain amino acids, dietary fiber, magnesium, zinc, and water were observed in pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence group compared with the non-gestational diabetes mellitus continent group. Serum vitamin C was reduced in the gestational diabetes mellitus pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence group compared with the non-gestational diabetes mellitus pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence group. CONCLUSIONS: This study emphasizes the necessity for a comprehensive strategy for gestational diabetes mellitus women with pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence in terms of deviation in maternal adaptation trending toward obesity and maternal micronutrients deficiencies.

RESUMO

Deep endometriosis, defined as external adenomyosis, is a late stage of endometriosis. Associated with very severe pain, in addition to probably being a cofactor of infertility, with a low prevalence, the diagnosis is integrated by high clinical suspicion and confirmed with imaging studies. Deep infiltration can reach sigmoid colon, which would have surgical indication as resolving treatment. We report the case of deep infiltrating endometriosis affecting sigmoid colon of a 42-year-old woman, who was diagnosed with colicky pain in the left lower quadrant and chronic constipation. Colonoscopy revealed a 90% stenosis in the proximal portion of sigmoid colon, as well as mural thickening proximal to the site of stenosis, reported by computed tomography with oral contrast, for which it was decided to perform robot-assisted sigmoidectomy, with a 6-month follow-up and with imaging control, patient continues asymptomatic and without the presence of lesions suggestive of recurrence, and there is no functional impairment.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Exercise is an important therapeutic strategy for preventing and treating myocardial infarction (MI)-induced cardiac remodeling and heart failure. However, the myocardial effects of resistance exercise on infarcted hearts are not completely established. In this study, we investigated the effects of resistance exercise on structural, functional, and molecular cardiac alterations in infarcted rats. METHODS: Three months after MI induction or simulated surgery, Wistar rats were assigned into three groups: Sham (n = 14); MI (n = 9); and exercised MI (MI-Ex, n = 13). Exercised rats performed, 3 times a week for 12 weeks, four climbs on a ladder with progressive loads. Cardiac structure and left ventricle (LV) function were analyzed by echocardiogram. Myocyte diameters were evaluated in hematoxylin- and eosin-stained histological sections as the smallest distance between borders drawn across the nucleus. Myocardial energy metabolism, lipid hydroperoxide, malondialdehyde, protein carbonylation, and antioxidant enzyme activities were evaluated by spectrophotometry. Gene expressions of NADPH oxidase subunits were evaluated by RT-PCR. Statistical analyses were performed using ANOVA and Tukey or Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's test. RESULTS: Mortality did not differ between the MI-Ex and MI groups. MI had dilated left atrium and LV, with LV systolic dysfunction. Exercise increased the maximum load-carrying capacity, with no changes in cardiac structure or LV function. Myocyte diameters were lower in MI than in Sham and MI-Ex. Lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase activity were lower in MI than in Sham. Citrate synthase and catalase activity were lower in MI and MI-Ex than in Sham. Lipid hydroperoxide concentration was lower in MI-Ex than in MI. Nox2 and p22phox gene expressions were higher in MI-Ex than in Sham. Gene expression of Nox4 was higher in MI and MI-Ex than in Sham, and p47phox was lower in MI than in Sham. CONCLUSION: Late resistance exercise was safe in infarcted rats. Resistance exercise improved maximum load-carrying capacity, reduced myocardial oxidative stress, and preserved myocardial metabolism, with no changes in cardiac structure or left ventricle function in infarcted rats.

RESUMO

A multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus native isolate (SfCH32) of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was encapsulated by spray-drying in a matrix based on oxidized corn starch without and with a fluorescent brightener. The microcapsules were exposed to UV radiation (365 nm) for 0, 2, 4, and 8 h at 25 °C or temperatures of 35, 40, and 45 °C for 8 h. The data obtained with temperatures 35, 40, and 45 °C were contrasted with those obtained at 25 °C. The microcapsules were evaluated for size, shape, and insecticidal capacity against third instar S. frugiperda larvae under laboratory conditions. The 82-84.2% of the encapsulating matrix, in a dry-weight basis, was recovered as NPV microcapsules of heterogeneous shape and size. The exposure to UV radiation and temperatures reduced significantly the insecticidal capacity of tested viruses; however, such capacity was higher for microencapsulated than for non-microencapsulated viruses. The non-encapsulated virus that had been exposed to 45 °C or maintained at UV radiation for 8 h showed the lowest insecticidal activity at 5th day post-inoculation, with a larvae mortality of 25.3 and 16%, respectively. The fluorescent brightener increased significantly the insecticidal capacity of encapsulated and non-encapsulated viruses, causing a mortality of 100% at that time point, and decreased the median lethal time independently of the incubation temperature and exposure time to radiation. The findings suggested that an encapsulating matrix based on oxidized corn starch might protect the insecticidal capacity of NPV under field conditions.

RESUMO

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is recognized as a "window of opportunity" for the future prediction of such complications as type 2 diabetes mellitus and pelvic floor muscle disorders, including urinary incontinence and genitourinary dysfunction. Translational studies have reported that pelvic floor muscle disorders are due to a GDM-induced-myopathy (GDiM) of the pelvic floor muscle and rectus abdominis muscle (RAM). We now describe the transcriptome profiling of the RAM obtained by Cesarean section from GDM and non-GDM women with and without pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence (PSUI). We identified 650 genes in total, and the differentially expressed genes were defined by comparing three control groups to the GDM with PSUI group (GDiM). Enrichment analysis showed that GDM with PSUI was associated with decreased gene expression related to muscle structure and muscle protein synthesis, the reduced ability of muscle fibers to ameliorate muscle damage, and the altered the maintenance and generation of energy through glycogenesis. Potential genetic muscle biomarkers were validated by RT-PCR, and their relationship to the pathophysiology of the disease was verified. These findings help elucidate the molecular mechanisms of GDiM and will promote the development of innovative interventions to prevent and treat complications such as post-GDM urinary incontinence.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ex-vivo myography enables the assessment of muscle electrical activity response. This study explored the viability of determining the physiological responses in muscles without tendon, as rectus abdominis muscle (RAM), through ex-vivo myography to assess its potential as a diagnostic tool. RESULTS: All tested RAM samples (five different samples) show patterns of electrical activity. A positive response was observed in 100% of the programmed stimulation. RAM 3 showed greater weight (0.47 g), length (1.66 cm), and width (0.77 cm) compared to RAM 1, RAM 2, RAM 4 and RAM 5 with more sustained electrical activity over time, a higher percentage of fatigue was analyzed at half the time of the electrical activity. The order of electrical activity (Mn) was RAM 3 > RAM 5 > RAM 1 > RAM 4 > RAM 2. No electrical activity was recorded in the Sham group. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that it is feasible to assess the physiological responses of striated muscle without tendon as RAM, obtained at C-section, under ex vivo myography. These results could be recorded, properly analyzed, and demonstrated its potential as a diagnostic tool for rectus abdominis muscle electrical activity.

Clinical trials have shown that sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors improve clinical outcomes in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients. As most studies were performed in Type 2 DM, the cardiovascular effects of SGLT2 inhibition still require clarification in Type 1 DM. We analyzed the effects of SGLT2 inhibitor dapagliflozin on cardiac remodeling in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes, an experimental model of Type 1 DM. Methods: Male Wistar rats were assigned into four groups: control (C, n = 14); control treated with dapagliflozin (C + DAPA, n = 14); diabetes (DM, n = 20); and diabetes treated with dapagliflozin (DM + DAPA, n = 20) for 8 weeks. Dapagliflozin dosage was 5 mg/kg/day. Statistical analyses: ANOVA and Tukey or Kruskal−Wallis and Dunn. Results: DM + DAPA presented decreased blood pressure and glycemia and increased body weight compared to DM (C 507 ± 52; C + DAPA 474 ± 50; DM 381 ± 52 *; DM + DAPA 430 ± 48 # g; * p < 0.05 vs. C; # p < 0.05 vs. C + DAPA and DM + DAPA). DM echocardiogram presented left ventricular and left atrium dilation with impaired systolic and diastolic function. Cardiac changes were attenuated by dapagliflozin. Myocardial hydroxyproline concentration and interstitial collagen fraction did not differ between groups. The expression of Type III collagen was lower in DM and DM + DAPA than their controls. Type I collagen expression and Type I-to-III collagen ratio were lower in DM + DAPA than C + DAPA. DM + DAPA had lower lipid hydroperoxide concentration (C 275 ± 42; C + DAPA 299 ± 50; DM 385 ± 54 *; DM + DAPA 304 ± 40 # nmol/g tissue; * p < 0.05 vs. C; # p < 0.05 vs. DM) and higher superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity than DM. Advanced glycation end products did not differ between groups. Conclusion: Dapagliflozin is safe, increases body weight, decreases glycemia and oxidative stress, and attenuates cardiac remodeling in an experimental rat model of Type 1 diabetes mellitus.

RESUMO

Streptomyces are recognized as antipathogenic agents and plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria. The objective of this study was to evaluate the capacities of four antifungal Streptomyces strains to: produce the substances that are involved in plant growth; solubilize phosphates; and fix nitrogen. The effects of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are emitted by these strains on the growth promotion of Arabidopsis thaliana and Phaseolus vulgaris L. (var. Pinto Saltillo) seedlings were also tested. All of the Streptomyces strains produced indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) (10.0 mg/L to 77.5 mg/L) and solubilized phosphates, but they did not fix nitrogen. In vitro assays showed that the VOCs from Streptomyces increased the shoot fresh weights (89-399%) and the root fresh weights (94-300%) in A. thaliana seedlings; however, these effects were less evident in P. vulgaris. In situ experiments showed that all the Streptomyces strains increased the shoot fresh weight (11.64-43.92%), the shoot length (11.39-29.01%), the root fresh weight (80.11-140.90%), the root length (40.06-59.01%), the hypocotyl diameter (up to 6.35%), and the chlorophyll content (up to 10.0%) in P. vulgaris seedlings. 3-Methyl-2-butanol had the highest effect among the ten pure VOCs on the growth promotion of A. thaliana seedlings. The tested Streptomyces strains favored biomass accumulation in A. thaliana and P. vulgaris seedlings.

RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the influence of physical training on myocardial function, oxidative stress, energy metabolism, and MAPKs and NF-κB signaling pathways in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), at advanced stage of arterial hypertension, which precedes heart failure development. METHODS: We studied four experimental groups: normotensive Wistar rats (W, n = 27), trained W (W-EX, n = 31), SHR (n = 27), and exercised SHR (SHR-EX, n = 32). At 13 months old, the exercise groups underwent treadmill exercise 5 days a week for 4 months. In vitro myocardial function was analyzed in left ventricular (LV) papillary muscle preparations. Antioxidant enzyme activity and energy metabolism were assessed by spectrophotometry. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase activity was analyzed by lucigenin reduction and protein expression by Western blot. Statistical analyzes: ANOVA and Tukey or Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests. RESULTS: SHR-EX had a lower frequency of heart failure features than SHR. Myocardial function and antioxidant enzyme activity were better in SHR-EX than SHR. Lipid hydroperoxide concentration, and phosphorylated JNK and total IkB protein expression were higher in hypertensive than control groups. Malondialdehyde, NADPH oxidase activity, total JNK, phosphorylated p38, phosphorylated and total p65 NF-κB, and phosphorylated IkB did not differ between groups. Protein expression from total p38, and total and phosphorylated ERK were higher in SHR than W. Lactate dehydrogenase and phosphorylated ERK were lower and citrate synthase and ß-hydroxyacyldehydrogenase were higher in SHR-EX than SHR. CONCLUSION: Exercise improves physical capacity, myocardial function, and antioxidant enzyme activity; reduces the frequency of heart failure features and ERK phosphorylation; and normalizes energy metabolism in SHR.

RESUMO

Abstract Chagas disease (CD) is a protozoan zoonosis caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Reactivation of CD occurs via drug-induced immunosuppression before and during transplantation. Here, we report the case of a 62-year-old man diagnosed with classic Hodgkin lymphoma who received highly aggressive conditioning chemotherapy before undergoing stem cell transplantation (SCT). The patient tested positive for CD in pre-transplantation evaluation. The patient exhibited persistent fever and elevated C-reactive protein levels before and after SCT, and was treated with antibiotics. Micro-Strout test showed evidence of trypomastigotes and he was treated with benznidazole until tested negative. Post-transplantation seropositive patients should be screened for possible reactivation.

The objective was to present the methodology of our protocol for the nasofibroscopic evaluation of swallowing in a cooperative manner and to disseminate among otolaryngologists and speech therapists that it is an agile, simple and easily feasible process to study, diagnose and plan the therapy of oropharyngeal dysphagia jointly in the multidisciplinary team. It was a cross- sectional descriptive pilot study where fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing was applied using the functional assessment protocol as a cooperative multidisciplinary method, taking a pilot sample of 29 adults, with an average age of 66.5 years. It was performed in patients without any alteration in the state of consciousness and who present findings compatible with dysphagia in the context of neurological pathology, post- intubation and some dysphonic patients. The protocol begins with the anamnesis, physical and functional examination of the orofacial structures, and ends with the clinical endoscopic examination of the structures involved in oropharyngeal dysphagia. After the application of the pilot test, the events during the swallowing process were observed. The frequent findings were: presence of residues in the vallecules and pharyngeal recesses after ingestion of a pudding-like consistency, as well as subsequent leakage of liquids in a nectar- like consistency. It is concluded that swallowing nasofibrosopia is a very versatile, easy and safe objective examination to perform, which allows an adequate diagnosis of oropharyngeal dysphagia, which if applied cooperatively between the speech therapist and the otolaryngologist can guide the work rehabilitation and therapeutic behavior.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is ample evidence that gestational diabetes mellitus has a direct influence on urinary incontinence and pelvic floor muscles. There are no standardized pelvic floor muscle exercise programs in the literature for the physiotherapy and differ in the type of exercise, intensity, type and duration of application, and the frequency and duration of treatment sessions. The aim of this systematic review will be to investigate that Pelvic Floor Muscle Training can prevent and/or decrease the pregnancy specific urinary incontinence in women with gestational diabetes mellitus or gestational hyperglycemia. METHODS: We will perform a systematic review according to the Cochrane methodology of Randomized Controlled Trials. An overall search strategy will be developed and adapted for Embase, MEDLINE, LILACS, and CENTRAL databases, with the date of consultation until June 2020. The MeSH terms used will be "Pregnancy", "Hyperglycemia", "Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2", "Diabetes Mellitus, Type 1", "Pregnancy in Diabetics", "Diabetes, Gestational", "Urinary Incontinence", "Pelvic Floor Muscle Strength". Primary outcomes: improvement or cure of pregnancy specific urinary incontinence (which can be assessed by questionnaires, and tools such as tampon test, voiding diary, urodynamic study). Secondary outcomes: improvement of pelvic floor muscle strength (pelvic floor functional assessment, perineometer, electromyography, functional ultrasonography), improved quality of life (questionnaires), presence or absence of postpartum Urinary Incontinence and adverse effects. Quality assessment by Cochrane instrument. Metanalysis if plausible, will be performed by the software Review Manager 5.3. DISCUSSION: The present study will be the first to analyze the effectiveness of pelvic floor exercises in pregnant women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus or Hyperglycemia, who suffer from pregnancy specific urinary incontinence. Randomized Controlled Trials design will be chosen because they present the highest level of evidence. It is expected to obtain robust and conclusive evidence to support clinical practice, in addition to promoting studies on the theme and contributing to new studies. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Systematic review registration: PROSPERO CRD42017065281.

The progressive respiratory failure generated by the disease even leads to death in severe stages of the disease. Due to this alteration some users may require mechanical ventilation. Much research links intubation to dysphagia. The Speech Therapist is the one who helps in the rehabilitation of swallowing disorders, the objective of this research was to review specialized literature to gather information on the Role of the Speech Pathologist in the Treatment of Dysphagia in High Clinic Users due to (Covid-19).A specific search was carried out in the databases PubMed, Science direct and in the Virtual Health Library (BSV). The key term Mesh "Covid-19" was used then the intersection boolean "AND" and the key term Mesh "Dysphagia" then the intersection boolean "OR" and the key term Mesh "Swallowing Disorder". A total of 42 articles in distributed as follows: PubMed (14), ScienceDirect (7), BSV (21). In the present investigation only articles corresponding to experimental studies, quasi-experimental studies, case studies, bibliographic reviews were included, clinical trials, where the role of the speech therapist in the work of dysphagia in patients with clinical discharge after having had Covid-19 is observed. The results obtained relate prolonged intubation to dysphagia, although the articles found are not enough to make a generalization, added to the fact that the quality of the articles found does not have the expected level of evidence, despite that, the results found confirm the speech pathologist specializing in orofacial motor skills as a relevant actor both in the evaluation and in the intervention of users who have dysphagia due to prolonged intubation by Covid-19.

RESUMO

Emergent technologies that make use of novel materials and quantum properties of light states are at the forefront in the race for the physical implementation, encoding and transmission of information. Photonic crystals (PCs) enter this paradigm with optical materials that allow the control of light propagation and can be used for optical communication, and photonics and electronics integration, making use of materials ranging from semiconductors, to metals, metamaterials, and topological insulators, to mention but a few. Here, we show how designer superconductor materials integrated into PCs fabrication allow for an extraordinary reduction of electromagnetic waves damping, making possible their optimal propagation and tuning through the structure, below critical superconductor temperature. We experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, a successful integration of ferroelectric and superconductor materials into a one-dimensional (1D) PC composed of [Formula: see text] bilayers that work in the whole visible spectrum, and below (and above) critical superconductor temperature [Formula: see text]. Theoretical calculations support, for different number of bilayers N, the effectiveness of the produced 1D PCs and may pave the way for novel optoelectronics integration and information processing in the visible spectrum, while preserving their electric and optical properties.

RESUMO

AIMS: To evaluate the effects of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on the structural characteristics of the rectus abdominis muscle (RAM) and its indirect effects on pregnancy-specific urinary incontinence (PSUI). METHODS: A total of 92 pregnant women were divided into four groups, according to their clinical conditions: non-GDM continent, non-GDM associated PSUI, GDM continent and GDM associated PSUI. The muscle morphometry (histochemistry and immunohistochemistry) for the fiber types and collagen fiber distribution, the ultrastructural analysis (transmission electron microscopy), the protein expression of fiber types and calcium signaling (Western blotting), and the content of types I and III collagen fiber (ELISA) in RAM collected at delivery were assessed. RESULTS: The GDM groups presented a significantly increased number of slow fibers and slow-twitch oxidative fiber expression; decreased fiber area, number of fast fibers, and area of collagen; an increase in central nuclei; ultrastructural alterations with focal lesion areas such as myeloid structures, sarcomere disorganization, and mitochondrial alteration. The PSUI groups presented a considerable decrease in types I and III collagen contents and the localization of collagen fiber. CONCLUSIONS: Our data reveal that GDM causes morphological, biochemical and physiological changes in the RAM, and this might predispose women to PSUI.

ABSTRACT N-acetylcysteine is known in a number of medical specialties and its ability to decrease the impact of reperfusion injury in acute myocardial infarction has boosted its use in cardiology over the past decades. N-acetylcysteine has a far-reaching range of effects since it functions as a protective agent against oxygen radicals through sulfhydryl groups in important regions of the cell membrane that interfere and affect endothelial functioning and complex adhesion processes as side effects; as well as other phenomena of the extravascular compartment. These processes are closely related to the cardiovascular system.
