BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify the postural sway variables that can distinguish between ballet dancers with high and low occurrences of musculoskeletal injuries. METHODS: Fourteen professional ballet dancers were assigned to a high-occurrence group (N = 5, reports >2 injuries in the previous 6-months) or a low-occurrence group (N = 9, reports ≤1 injury). Center-of-pressure (COP) data were acquired using a force platform during the following tasks: single-leg stance with eyes open, single-leg stance with eyes closed, and demi-pointe stance with eyes open. The COP standard deviation (SD) and range (RA) in both the medial-lateral (ML) and anterior-posterior (AP) directions were estimated. Between-group comparisons were made through Welch's t-tests for unequal sample size along the effect size measure (Cohen's d). Spearman's rho was used to estimate the association between the number of injuries and the COP variables. The statistical threshold was set at 1%. RESULTS: A between-group effect was found only for the demi-pointe stance, with large effects for SDML (P = 0.006, d = 1.7), RAAP (P = 0.006, d = 1.7), and RAML (P = 0.005, d = 1.7). An inverse relationship was found between the number of injuries and the demi-pointe's COP range in both directions (Spearman's rho from -0.681 to -0.726, P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: COP measures taken in ballet-specific positions can distinguish between dancers with a high and low occurrence of musculoskeletal injuries. Suggestions are made to include ballet-specific tasks in the functional assessments of professional dancers.

Arapaima gigas, one of the world's largest freshwater fish, is considered an emerging species for aquaculture development in Brazil given its high growth rate and meat quality. However, the lack of reproductive control in captivity has limited the expansion of Arapaima farming. This study aimed to test the effects of hormonal induction using mGnRHa implants and size pairing on broodstock reproduction through the analyses of sex steroids. To do so, broodstock of different sizes (large, small or mixed) were paired and implanted. Plasma and cephalic secretion profiles of testosterone (T), 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) and 17ß-oestradiol (E2) were analysed. Compared to control (non-implanted), implanted broodstock showed a significant increase in plasma 11-KT (large and small males) and T (large and mixed females) post GnRHa implantation. In females, a significant increase in plasma T levels was shown, however, E2 remained unchanged after implantation. Despite the lack of clear spawning induction, this study showed the potency of GnRHa on sex steroid production regardless of pairing groups. Interestingly, significant correlations between blood plasma and cephalic secretion levels of 11-KT in males and T in females were observed, indicating the possible release of pheromones through the cephalic canals of A. gigas.

INTRODUCTION: The workflow in clinical flow cytometry laboratories must constantly be reviewed to develop technical procedures that improve quality and productivity and reduce costs. Using the Beckman Coulter dry coating technology, we customized a ten-color tube with dried antibody reagents, designated the Duraclone screening tube (DST), for screening hematological malignancies. Here, we compared the applicability, clinical and numerical equivalence, and cost and time required for the technical procedures between the liquid reagents and the DST. METHODS: The DST contains CD4 + Kappa-FITC, CD8 + Lambda-PE, CD3 + CD14-ECD, CD33-PE-Cy5.5, CD20 + CD56-PE-Cy7, CD34-APC, CD19-APC-AlexaFluor700, CD10-APC-AlexaFluor750, CD5-Pacific Blue, and CD45-Krome Orange. We evaluated 20 bone marrow samples, 13 peripheral blood samples, 6 lymph node biopsy samples, 5 fine-needle aspirate samples, 5 cerebrospinal fluid samples, and 1 pleural fluid sample. RESULTS: The DST was useful for more than 60% of our samples. It was able to enumerate the majority of the populations in all types of samples with a statistically acceptable correlation with the liquid reagents. The use of the DST translated into significant time and cost savings of 15.8% and 12.3%, respectively, compared with the use of the liquid reagent. The cost was reduced by $14.36 per sample. CONCLUSIONS: The DST is an efficient solution for screening hematological malignancies with improved quality, productivity, standardization, and sustainability. These improvements could benefit patients by providing faster diagnoses using a higher quality and lower cost reagent.

Parental investment in Arapaima gigas includes nest building and guarding, followed by a care provision when a cephalic fluid is released from the parents' head to the offspring. This fluid has presumably important functions for the offspring but so far its composition has not been characterised. In this study the proteome and peptidome of the cephalic secretion was studied in parental and non-parental fish using capillary electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry (CE-MS) and GeLC-MS/MS analyses. Multiple comparisons revealed 28 peptides were significantly different between males and parental males (PC-males), 126 between females and parental females (PC-females), 51 between males and females and 9 between PC-males and PC-females. Identification revealed peptides were produced in the inner ear (pcdh15b), eyes (tetraspanin and ppp2r3a), central nervous system (otud4, ribeye a, tjp1b and syn1) among others. A total of 422 proteins were also identified and gene ontology analysis revealed 28 secreted extracellular proteins. From these, 2 hormones (prolactin and stanniocalcin) and 12 proteins associated to immunological processes (serotransferrin, α-1-antitrypsin homolog, apolipoprotein A-I, and others) were identified. This study provides novel biochemical data on the lateral line fluid which will enable future hypotheses-driven experiments to better understand the physiological roles of the lateral line in chemical communication.
