The dorsolateral processes of tergum X, in dorsal view, are horn-like and the phallicata has a medial pair of membranous, rounded, lateral flanges projecting posteroventrad. Protoptila ctenacantha Flint 1974 is recorded for the first time from Brazil. Protoptila condylifera Flint 1971, Protoptila flexispina Flint 1971, Protoptila simplex Flint 1971, and Protoptila trispicata Flint 1971 are recorded for the first time from Roraima state, Brazil.

RESUMO

Two new species of Flintiella Angrisano 1995 are described and illustrated from specimens collected with light traps in the states of Pará and Roraima, northern Brazil. Flintiella serrana sp. nov. can be distinguished from all other species in the genus by the subgenital plate with incised apex, and two pairs of ventral processes. Flintiella triaena sp. nov. is distinctive with no clearly similar congeners and can be distinguished from all known species in the genus by the trident-like subgenital plate in ventral view. Additionally, we record the genus Flintiella for the first time in Roraima State.

The first report of Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) yuilli yuilli Young & Porter, 1972 (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Roraima State, Brazil is presented. The specimens were captured in the Auaris indigenous community, on the border with Venezuela, with CDC light traps set up in henhouses between 18:00 h and 06:00 h. L. yuilli yuilli is the only vector of Leishmania spp. currently known in Auaris and may be involved in the transmission of Leishmania spp. to humans in the area.

Our study aimed to investigate the presence of vectors of Leishmania and to study the transmission risks of leishmaniasis to humans. Thus, a survey forthe occurrence of sand flies in an endemic area for American cutaneous leishmaniasis was conducted in Serra do Tepequém, City of Amajari, Roraima State, Brazil. The sand flies were captured from August 2008 to May 2009 using four CDC light traps installed 1 m above the ground levei and inside the primary forest. A total of 2,230 specimens were captured. They were distributed into 11 subgenera, four groups of species and 38 species. Lutzomyia eurypyga was the most numerous species, accounting for 72 per cent of ali captured sand flies. The occurrence of L. anduzei, L. ayrozai, L. antunesi, L. davis, L. flaviscutellata, L. hirsuta, L. paraensis, L. squamiventris squamiventris, L. ubiquitalis and L. umbratilis, either proven orsuspected vectors of leishmania in the Amazon Region, indicates risk of transmission of the disease to humans in the study area. For the first time, the species L. georgii and L. longipennis were found in Roraima State...

Anatomic data on the epidermis leaf segments from Mauritia flexuosa L. f. (Arecaceae) are presented on three phases of development. Leaf segments were analyzed on the all extension of leaf. Both adaxial and abaxial epidermal cells stand out with sinuous walls, rectangular and longitudinally oriented to the foliar axis with the marked presence of spherical- spiny silica bodies. The back epidermal cells of both surfaces present straight walls and vary among short, long and round. Trichomes are unicellular, simple, long, with a wider base. Leaf segments from M. flexuosa are anphistomatic with tetracitic type stomats. In a cross-section the leaf skin is unistratified with a broad substimatic chamber. The findings obtained showed no significant variations among the three phases of development and the characters that were found appear to be common on other palm trees.
