RESUMO

This text contains the account of a practical research experience which uses the theory and techniques of oral narratives. The authors present the theoretical and methodological framework of the technique, the choice of the topic, which focused on the psychiatric patient and his/her family relationship, the research site and the characterization of collaborators. They also present each step of this methodology, starting from the interviews and following on to the reading, transcription, text correction, floating reading, trans-creation, identification of the vital tone as well as that of analysis categories. Finally, they point out the categories that have been removed from the account by making comments on the topics referring to each one. The technique was shown to be effective for the apprehension of subjective categories and as way to understand personal and social relationships in the everyday practice of nursing in mental health.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was the construction of a tool in order to know people opinion about mental health, illness and care in this area. We constructed and validated a Scale of opinion measurement, formed by 56 affirmations about mental health, illness and care in which the subjects demonstrated their agreement to the expressed content. The 5 stages of the scale construction involve the formulation of the statements and respective improvement of the affirmations content, understanding and the distribution of items in the Scale before the validation procedure. The definitive tool was applied in a sample of 250 subjects (patients, family members and health professionals). Data were quantitatively analyzed with non parametric proves and qualitatively analyzed through comparisons among groups, by categories.

RESUMO

In a humanist care model we searched to analyse experiences lived by nurses interacting with chronic depression patients. There was a female patient who was being assisted by Psycho-social Support Nucleus (NAP), 60 years old, presenting depressive symptoms, proper for her age, probably stressed by her suffering experiences in life. It was a therapeutic interaction as matters of the patient's interest (not the nurses interest) have been presented; the pace of communication has been determined b the patient herself; the nurse (except in the very beginning when the patient was a little anxious) followed her communication, physically approaching her whenever it was necessary; intervened only at necessary moments; inspired confidence that was necessary for the patient to talk about her intimate feelings; helped her to recover when she was out of control; conducted her safely, but with comprehensive attitude until the patient felt easy to leave her; demonstrated that she could help her in other moments if she thought it was necessary. Interaction achieved its aims helping the patient and being technically adequate for therapeutic and diagnosis aspects.
