Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF), containing perfluorinated surfactants, can reach the environment. The objective of this study was to determine the ecotoxicity of AFFF, according to the type of fire to be fought (A1: 1.05 g.L- 1, A2: 3.15 g.L- 1 and A3: 6.30 g.L- 1), to bioindicators of different trophic levels. For Artemia salina a toxic effect was observed at sample A1 (at concentrations of 100%), A2 (at concentrations above 25%) and A3 (at concentrations above 12.5%). For Lactuca sativa all samples affected the number of germinated seeds, speed and percentage of germination and root length. To the Eisenia fetida earthworm, samples A2 and A3 were considered toxic due to the percent avoidance being 70% and 100%, respectively. In Macaca mullata renal cell culture test, none of the samples were toxic by the MTT test. Therefore, it is necessary to develop methods for the safe use of AFFF by professionals.

Chemical desiccation is widely used in agriculture to anticipate harvest and mitigate the effects of adverse environmental conditions. It is applied to both grains and seeds. Although this practice is widely used, there are still significant gaps in understanding the effects of different herbicide application times on seed quality and plant physiological responses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different herbicide application times on cowpea, focusing on seed quality, physiological responses, and biochemical composition, including chlorophylls, carotenoids, sugars, and proline, under nocturnal desiccation. In the first experiment, eight herbicides and two mixtures were applied at night: diquat, flumioxazin, diquat + flumioxazin, glufosinate ammonium, saflufenacil, carfentrazone, diquat + carfentrazone, atrazine, and glyphosate. All of the tested herbicides caused a reduction in normal seedling formation, with the diquat + carfentrazone combination resulting in 100% abnormal seedlings. A significant decrease in chlorophyll levels (chlorophyll a: 63.5%, chlorophyll b: 50.2%) was observed using diquat, which indicates damage to photosynthetic processes, while the carotenoid content increased. Total soluble sugars and proline were also negatively impacted, reflecting physiological stress and metabolic changes in seedlings. In the second experiment, three application times were tested with diquat, diquat + flumioxazin, and diquat + carfentrazone. Nocturnal application showed the most significant reduction in chlorophyll levels and increased carotenoid levels. Application at noon and late afternoon also significantly changed the soluble sugar and proline levels. These results indicate that the herbicide application time directly influences the seeds' physiological quality.

BACKGROUND: Several lesions can affect the oral and maxillofacial region, with trends influenced by lifestyle and age. AIM: To investigate the occurrence of oral and maxillofacial lesions in paediatric patients assisted in an oral medicine diagnostic service in Brazil over 20 years. DESIGN: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed in an oral medicine diagnostic service (1999-2019). Data included sex, age, anatomic site, and diagnosis from clinical records of children (0-9 years) and adolescents (10-19 years). Lesions were diagnosed through clinical examination. Biopsy and histopathologic examination were performed when necessary. RESULTS: Among 10 530 records, 702 (6.67%) were from patients aged 0-19 years diagnosed with oral or maxillofacial lesions. A high frequency of females was observed (58.1%). Reactive/inflammatory lesions were the most common group of lesions (45.2%), followed by abnormalities of teeth/developmental defects (17.8%) and pulpal and periapical diseases (8.5%). Mucocele/ranula was the most common lesion in children (29.3%) and adolescents (25.3%). Lips were the most affected anatomic sites. CONCLUSION: Most lesions were benign, and mucocele/ranula was the most frequent. Our results did not differ from those of histopathological-based studies, but they provided information on the occurrence of oral and maxillofacial lesions to dentists and paediatricians.

Advanced diagnostic technologies have made accurate and precise diagnosis of pathogens easy. Herein, we present a new diagnostic method, droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), to detect and quantify Acinetobacter baumannii in mini bronchoalveolar lavage (mini-BAL) samples. A. baumannii causes ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), a severe healthcare infection affecting patients' lungs. VAP carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality, making its timely diagnosis crucial for prompt and effective management. Methodology. The assay performance was evaluated by comparing colonization data, quantitative culture results, and different generations of PCR (traditional PCR and Real-Time PCR-qPCR Taqman® and SYBR® Green). The ddPCR and qPCR Taqman® prove to be more sensitive than other molecular techniques. Reasonable analytical specificity was obtained with ddPCR, qPCR TaqMan®, and conventional PCR. However, qPCR SYBR® Green technology presented a low specificity, making the results questionable in clinical samples. DdPCR detected/quantified A. baumanni in more clinical samples than other methods (38.64% of the total samples). This emerging ddPCR technology offers promising advantages such as detection by more patients and direct quantification of pathogens without calibration curves.

Chemical desiccation in the preharvest of grains and seeds is commonly used in production fields. Using herbicides for this purpose is a viable alternative to reduce beans' exposure to adverse crop conditions. Our objectives were to evaluate (1) the efficacy of herbicides for accelerated defoliation of cowpea, (2) the impact of herbicide application on antioxidant enzyme activity and protein and amino acid contents in seeds, and (3) the effects of different herbicide application schedules on the physiological aspects of seeds. In the first experiment, in addition to the control treatment (without herbicides), seven herbicides and two mixtures were applied at night: diquat, flumioxazin, diquat + flumioxazin, glufosinate ammonium, saflufenacil, carfentrazone, diquat + carfentrazone, atrazine, and glyphosate. Diquat and its mixtures showed greater efficacy in anticipating the harvest. Flumioxazin and diquat alone reduced amino acid content by 61.72 and 51.44%, respectively. The same trend was observed for total soluble proteins. The activity of antioxidant enzymes (CAT, POD, PPO) increased, indicating oxidative stress caused by diquat and flumioxazin. In the second experiment, we tested three application times (6 a.m., 12 p.m., 6 p.m.) with diquat, diquat + flumioxazin, and diquat + carfentrazone. The lowest damage to chlorophyll a was at 6 a.m.; other times reduced photosynthetic pigments and increased carotenoid content. Total soluble sugars decreased by 27.74% with nocturnal application of diquat + flumioxazin. Our data indicate that herbicide use for desiccation affects seed quality. These findings highlight the need for selecting appropriate herbicides and application times. Future research should explore long-term impacts on crop yield and quality.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a biological blood-derived therapeutic obtained from whole blood that contains higher levels of platelets. PRP has been primarily used to mitigate joint degeneration and chronic pain in osteoarthritis (OA). This clinical applicability is based mechanistically on the release of several proteins by platelets that can restore joint homeostasis. Platelets are the primary source of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) outside the central nervous system. Interestingly, BDNF and PRP share key biological activities with clinical applicability for OA management, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and antioxidant. However, the role of BDNF in PRP therapeutic activities is still unknown. Thus, this work aimed to investigate the implications of BDNF in therapeutic outcomes provided by PRP therapy in vitro and in-vivo, using the MIA-OA animal model in male Wistar rats. Initially, the PRP was characterized, obtaining a leukocyte-poor-platelet-rich plasma (LP-PRP). Our assays indicated that platelets activated by Calcium release BDNF, and suppression of M1 macrophage polarization induced by LP-PRP depends on BDNF full-length receptor, Tropomyosin Kinase-B (TrkB). OA animals were given LP-PRP intra-articular and showed functional recovery in gait, joint pain, inflammation, and tissue damage caused by MIA. Immunohistochemistry for activating transcriptional factor-3 (ATF-3) on L4/L5 dorsal root ganglia showed the LP-PRP decreased the nerve injury induced by MIA. All these LP-PRP therapeutic activities were reversed in the presence of TrkB receptor antagonist. Our results suggest that the therapeutic effects of LP-PRP in alleviating OA symptoms in rats depend on BDNF/TrkB activity.

Background: The Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the fusion of cervical vertebrae, which may be associated with other malformations, such as dermoid tumors and teratoma. Some theories explain the embryology of these associations. Another condition that may be present is the dermal sinus (DS), communication between intracranial tumors and the subcutaneous tissue, and predisposing infections. This case report aims to describe an association between these three pathologies as well as correlate them from the literature. This report was based on medical records retrospectively reviewed associated with the systematic bibliographical consultation using indexed databases based on inclusion and exclusion methods. Case Description: An adult male patient, 24 years old, was admitted to our service, presenting fever and meningeal irritation as initial symptoms. In the patient's clinical history, he was diagnosed with an occipital DS in his childhood, which was previously instructed to be operated on by another neurosurgical team, but the patient chose not to perform the procedure. The magnetic resonance imaging investigation showed a DS associated with a cerebellar infected mass with 2 cm on its main diameter. The patient was treated with preoperative antibiotic therapy and underwent gross total surgical resection of the tumor as well as DS correction, confirmed in the histopathological examination as a teratoma. After surgery, further computed tomography scan analysis showed the presence of cervical vertebrae fusion, compatible with KFS diagnosis. Conclusion: The association between KFS, cerebellar teratoma, and DS has not yet been described in the literature, with only the association of the first two being extremely rare.

Background Spinal epidural abscess is a rare but serious condition that can cause spinal cord compression and neurological deficits. Case Description and Methods The article reports a case of a 31-year-old patient who presented with an infectious cellulitis in the left hand, which progressed to a spinal epidural abscess. The diagnosis was confirmed by clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging. Treatment involved laminectomy, after which the patient had complete recovery of neurological deficits. This article is a case report with a literature review. Patient data and images were collected by the researchers who participated in the patient's care. The literature was reviewed by one of the researchers based on the search for articles in the PubMed database. For the research, the following keywords were inserted: "Spinal epidural empyema," "Spinal epidural abscess." Conclusion Spinal epidural abscess is often underdiagnosed, which can lead to delays in treatment and serious complications. The relationship between cellulitis and spinal epidural abscess may be related to the spread of infection through the lymphatic or blood system.

Bluetongue Virus (BTV) and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (EHDV) are Orbiviruses primarily transmitted by their biological vector, Culicoides spp. Latreille, 1809 (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). These viruses can infect a diverse range of vertebrate hosts, leading to disease outbreaks in domestic and wild ruminants worldwide. This study, conducted at the Belo Horizonte Municipal Parks and Zoobotany Foundation (FPMZB-BH), Minas Gerais, Brazil, focused on Orbivirus and its vectors. Collections of Culicoides spp. were carried out at the FPMZB-BH from 9 December 2021 to 18 November 2022. A higher prevalence of these insects was observed during the summer months, especially in February. Factors such as elevated temperatures, high humidity, fecal accumulation, and proximity to large animals, like camels and elephants, were associated with increased Culicoides capture. Among the identified Culicoides spp. species, Culicoides insignis Lutz, 1913, constituted 75%, and Culicoides pusillus Lutz, 1913, 6% of the collected midges, both described as competent vectors for Orbivirus transmission. Additionally, a previously unreported species in Minas Gerais, Culicoides debilipalpis Lutz, 1913, was identified, also suspected of being a transmitter of these Orbiviruses. The feeding preferences of some Culicoides species were analyzed, revealing that C. insignis feeds on deer, Red deer (Cervus elaphus) and European fallow deer (Dama dama). Different Culicoides spp. were also identified feeding on humans, raising concerns about the potential transmission of arboviruses at the site. In parallel, 72 serum samples from 14 susceptible species, including various Cervids, collected between 2012 and 2022 from the FPMZB-BH serum bank, underwent Agar Gel Immunodiffusion (AGID) testing for BTV and EHDV. The results showed 75% seropositivity for BTV and 19% for EHDV. Post-testing analysis revealed variations in antibody presence against BTV in a tapir and a fallow deer and against EHDV in a gemsbok across different years. These studies confirm the presence of BTV and EHDV vectors, along with potential virus circulation in the zoo. Consequently, implementing control measures is essential to prevent susceptible species from becoming infected and developing clinical diseases.

The reintroduction of captive animals to the wild helps restore endangered species, but it risks pathogen transmission, harming wild populations. Such transmission can impact the genetic diversity and long-term viability of these populations. This study assessed parasite diversity and load in captive Pecari tajacu, a species native to the Americas and culturally significant to Brazilian indigenous culture, prior to reintroduction. Samples from 24 peccaries were analyzed for ectoparasites, hemopathogens, and stool parasites with direct and molecular analysis. Findings showed that various parasites were present. Two peccaries (8.3%) were infested by the adult tick Amblyomma sculptum. Six (25.0%) tested positive for Trypanosoma evansi, four (16.7%) for hemobacteria of the family Anaplasmataceae, twelve (50.0%) for hemotropic Mycoplasma, and seven (29.2%) for Leishmania braziliensis. Stool samples indicated multiple parasites, with sixteen (66.7%) peccaries infected by Strongylida order parasites, Spiruridae in three (12.5%), and Ascaris suum in one (4.2%) animal. Cysts of Balantidium sp. were found in twenty (83.3%), Entamoeba polecki in five (20.8%), and Iodamoeba bütschlii in two (8.3%) peccaries. To our current knowledge, this is the first global report of Leishmania braziliensis, Iodamoeba bütschlii, and Entamoeba polecki in P. tajacu, irrespective of the environment, including both captivity and wild conditions. Some of these parasites are common in domestic animals, and others are zoonotic, indicating potential interspecies pathogen transmission.

Plant-based insecticides offer advantages such as negligible residual effects, reduced risks to both humans and the environment, and immunity to resistance issues that plague conventional chemicals. However, the practical use of monoterpenes in insect control has been hampered by challenges including their poor solubility and stability in aqueous environments. In recent years, the application of nanotechnology-based formulations, specifically nanoemulsions, has emerged as a prospective strategy to surmount these obstacles. In this study, we developed and characterized nanoemulsions based on cymene and myrcene and assessed their toxicity both in vitro using human keratinocytes (HaCAT) cells and in an in vivo model involving Galleria mellonella larvae. Additionally, we investigated the insecticidal efficacy of monoterpenes against the mosquito Aedes aegypti, the primary dengue vector, via larval bioassay. Employing a low-energy approach, we successfully generated nanoemulsions. The cymene-based nanoemulsion exhibited a hydrodynamic diameter of approximately 98 nm and a zeta potential of -25 mV. The myrcene-based nanoemulsion displayed a hydrodynamic diameter of 118 nm and a zeta potential of -20 mV. Notably, both nanoemulsions demonstrated stability over 60 days, accompanied by controlled release properties and low toxicity towards HaCAT cells and Galleria mellonella larvae. Moreover, the nanoemulsions exhibited significant lethality against third-instar Aedes aegypti larvae at a concentration of 50 mg/L. In conclusion, the utilization of nanoemulsions encapsulating cymene and myrcene presents a promising avenue for overcoming the limitations associated with poor solubility and stability of monoterpenes. This study sheds light on the potential of the nanoemulsions as effective and environmentally friendly insecticides in the ongoing battle against mosquito-borne diseases.

A leishmaniose visceral, conhecida também como calazar, trata-se da forma mais grave das leishmanioses por ser uma enfermidade sistêmica e com um grande espectro clínico e um caráter irregular. Desse modo, objetivou-se avaliar a situação epidemiológica da leishmaniose visceral no Estado de Goiás, bem como o caráter dessa doença e o perfil mais atingido. Para isso, foi realizada uma pesquisa retrospectiva compreendendo o período de 2012 a 2021, com os casos notificados de leishmaniose visceral no Estado de Goiás. A busca pelos dados ocorreu por meio dos SINAN/DATASUS do Ministério da Saúde. Os dados encontrados foram tabulados e analisados por meio do programa Excel da Microsoft®. No período avaliado, foram notificados 388 casos de LV em Goiás, distribuídos em 47 municípios goianos. 66,23% das ocorrências pertenciam ao sexo masculino; 25,51% eram adultos com idade entre 20- 39 anos; 74,48% eram moradores da zona urbana; além disso, 9,27% do total de casos notificados em Goiás evoluíram para óbito. Há ainda uma a taxa de coinfecção LV/HIV de 12,11% do total de casos notificados. Constatou-se, portanto, que algumas localidades possuem registros consequentes de LV, levando a existência de áreas endêmicas no estado. Existe um perfil de acometimento em Goiás, no período de análise, direcionado para o sexo masculino, de cor parda, jovens adultos, com baixa escolaridade, vivendo nas cidades e grandes centros urbanos. Destaca-se o elevado quantitativo de dados identificados como ignorado/branco, que podem interferir significativmente em análises epidemiológicas.
Visceral leishmaniasis, also known as kala-azar, is the most serious form of leishmaniasis because it is a systemic disease with a wide clinical spectrum and an irregular character. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the epidemiological situation of visceral leishmaniasis in the State of Goiás, as well as the character of this disease and the most affected profile. For this, a retrospective survey was carried out covering the period from 2012 to 2021, with reported cases of visceral leishmaniasis in the State of Goiás. The search for data took place through the SINAN/DATASUS of the Ministry of Health. The data found were tabulated and analyzed using the Microsoft® Excel program. In the period evaluated, 388 cases of VL were reported in Goiás, distributed in 47 munic- ipalities in Goiás. 66.23% of the occurrences were male; 25.51% were adults aged be- tween 20-39 years; 74.48% were residents of the urban area; in addition, 9.27% of the total cases reported in Goiás evolved to death. There is also a LV/HIV co-infection rate of 12.11% of the total reported cases. It was found, therefore, that some localities have consequent records of VL, leading to the existence of endemic areas in the state. There is a profile of involvement directed towards males, of mixed race, young adults, with low education, living in cities and large urban centers. The high quantity of data identified as ignored/white stands out, which can significantly interfere in epidemiological analyses. KEYWORDS: Epidemiology; Leishmania; Notification.
La leishmaniasis visceral, también conocida como kala-azar, es la forma más grave de leishmaniasis por tratarse de una enfermedad sistémica de amplio espectro clínico y carácter irregular. Así, el objetivo fue evaluar la situación epidemiológica de la leishmaniasis visceral en el Estado de Goiás, así como el carácter de esta enfermedad y el perfil más afectado. Para ello, se realizó una encuesta retrospectiva que abarcó el período de 2012 a 2021, con los casos notificados de leishmaniasis visceral en el Estado de Goiás. La búsqueda de datos se realizó a través del SINAN/DATASUS del Ministerio de Salud. Los datos encontrados fueron tabulados y analizados utilizando el programa Microsoft® Excel. En el período evaluado, fueron notificados 388 casos de LV en Goiás, distribuidos en 47 municipios de Goiás. 66,23% de las ocurrencias fueron del sexo masculino; 25,51% eran adultos con edad entre 20-39 años; 74,48% eran residentes del área urbana; además, 9,27% del total de casos notificados en Goiás evolucionaron a muerte. Existe también una tasa de coinfección LV/VIH de 12,11% del total de casos notificados. Se constató, por lo tanto, que algunas localidades tienen registros consecuentes de LV, llevando a la existencia de áreas endémicas en el estado. Existe un perfil de envolvimiento dirigido a hombres, mestizos, adultos jóvenes, con baja escolaridad, residentes en ciudades y grandes centros urbanos. Se destaca la elevada cantidad de datos identificados como ignorados/blancos, lo que puede interferir significativamente en los análisis epidemiológicos.

The estimative of the leaf area using a nondestructive method is paramount for successive evaluations in the same plant with precision and speed, not requiring high-cost equipment. Thus, the objective of this work was to construct models to estimate leaf area using artificial neural network models (ANN) and regression and to compare which model is the most effective model for predicting leaf area in sesame culture. A total of 11,000 leaves of four sesame cultivars were collected. Then, the length (L) and leaf width (W), and the actual leaf area (LA) were quantified. For the ANN model, the parameters of the length and width of the leaf were used as input variables of the network, with hidden layers and leaf area as the desired output parameter. For the linear regression models, leaf dimensions were considered independent variables, and the actual leaf area was the dependent variable. The criteria for choosing the best models were: the lowest root of the mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and absolute mean percentage error (MAPE), and higher coefficients of determination (R2). Among the linear regression models, the equation yË=0.515+0.584*LW was considered the most indicated to estimate the leaf area of the sesame. In modeling with ANNs, the best results were found for model 2-3-1, with two input variables (L and W), three hidden variables, and an output variable (LA). The ANN model was more accurate than the regression models, recording the lowest errors and higher R2 in the training phase (RMSE: 0.0040; MAE: 0.0027; MAPE: 0.0587; and R2: 0.9834) and in the test phase (RMSE: 0.0106; MAE: 0.0029; MAPE: 0.0611; and R2: 0.9828). Thus, the ANN method is the most indicated and accurate for predicting the leaf area of the sesame.

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by pathogenic variants in CYP27A1, leading to a deficiency in sterol 27-hydroxylase. This defect results in the accumulation of cholestanol and bile alcohols in various tissues, including the brain, tendons and peripheral nerves. We conducted this review to evaluate lipid profile abnormalities in patients with CTX. A search was conducted in PubMed, Embase and the Virtual Health Library in January 2023 to evaluate studies reporting the lipid profiles of CTX patients, including the levels of cholestanol, cholesterol and other lipids. Elevated levels of cholestanol were consistently observed. Most patients presented normal or low serum cholesterol levels. A decrease in chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) leads to increased synthesis of cholesterol metabolites, such as bile alcohols 23S-pentol and 25-tetrol 3-glucuronide, which may serve as surrogate follow-up markers in patients with CTX. Lipid abnormalities in CTX have clinical implications. Cholestanol deposition in tissues contributes to clinical manifestations, including neurological symptoms and tendon xanthomas. Dyslipidemia and abnormal cholesterol metabolism may also contribute to the increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular complications observed in some CTX patients.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the auditory function of the elderly using the middle latency potentials. METHODOLOGY: Group 1 (G1): 20 healthy individuals of both genders, older than 60 years, without hearing loss. Group 2 (G2): 20 healthy individuals of both sexes, older than 60 years, with hearing loss in frequencies from 4 to 8 kHz. Potential recording was performed with unilateral and bilateral stimulation and the Binaural Interaction Component was calculated. RESULTS: Na latency in C3A1 was greater in the stimulation of the right ear in G2 and the amplitude of Na-Pa was greater in the stimulation of the right ear and recording in C3A1 in G1. The latency of the Pa component was higher in the stimulation of the right ear recorded in C4A2. The Pb component in G2 by bilateral stimulation and recorded in C4A2 had higher latency. The first and second negative and positive peaks presented greater amplitude in G1. In C3A1, the 1st negative peak was more negative in G1 and the 2nd positive peak showed greater amplitude in C4A2 in both groups. CONCLUSION: The transmission of auditory information to the primary auditory cortex is impaired with aging, especially in unilateral stimulation, reinforced by losses in elderly people with peripheral hearing loss, such as in the binaural interaction at the cortical and subcortical levels. Thus, the AMLR has shown to be a sensitive examination to investigate neuroauditory disorders in the elderly, especially related to high-frequency hearing loss and primary auditory cortex dysfunctions caused by the aging process.

Methylparaben, chloro-methylparaben, and dichloro-methylparaben were evaluated in Allium cepa at 5, 10, 50, and 100 µg/L and in Eisenia fetida at 10 and 100 µg/L. In A. cepa roots, 100 µg/L methylparaben and 50 and 100 µg/L chlorinated methylparabens reduced cell proliferation, caused cellular changes, and reduced cell viability in meristems, which caused a reduction in root growth. Furthermore, they caused drastic inhibition of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase; activated guaiacol peroxidase and promoted lipid peroxidation in meristematic root cells. In earthworms, after 14 days exposure to the three compounds, there were no deaths, and catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase were not inhibited. However, guaiacol peroxidase activity and lipid peroxidation were observed in animals exposed to dichloro-methylparaben. Soils with dichloro-methylparaben also caused the escape of earthworms. It is inferred that the recurrent contamination of soils with these methylparabens, with emphasis on chlorinated derivatives, can negatively impact different species that depend directly or indirectly on soil to survive.

Objetivos: pesquisar, na literatura, o perfil laboratorial dos pacientes acometidos gravemente pela COVID-19, bem como organizar um plano de cuidados de enfermagem de acordo com as alterações de biomarcadores elencados nessa revisão. Método: revisão integrativa realizada nas bases de dados MEDLINE e PubMed. Incluíram-se artigos envolvendo pacientes adultos e hospitalizados. Excluíram-se aqueles que não responderam à questão norteadora, estudos genéticos ou imunológicos, estudos repetidos e artigos de opinião. Posteriormente, foram elencados diagnósticos e intervenções de enfermagem para alterações laboratoriais encontradas. Resultados: revisados 25 artigos, que mostraram alterações laboratoriais em biomarcadores inflamatórios, de coagulação, bioquímicos e hematológicos capazes de interferir na funcionalidade do organismo, podendo acarretar complicações clínicas, como sangramentos, edemas e tromboembolismos, tornando fundamental a elaboração de plano de cuidados pelo Enfermeiro. Considerações finais: biomarcadores laboratoriais são importantes para identificação de pacientes com risco de gravidade e mortalidade, contribuindo para definição de diagnósticos e condutas de enfermagem em terapia intensiva.

Método: revisión integradora realizada en las bases de datos MEDLINE y PubMed. Se incluyeron artículos cuyos participantes fueron pacientes adultos y hospitalizados. Se excluyeron aquellos materiales que no respondiesen a la pregunta guía, al igual que estudios genéticos o inmunológicos, estudios repetidos y artículos de opinión. Posteriormente, se generó una lista de diagnósticos e intervenciones de Enfermería para las alteraciones de los parámetros de laboratorios encontradas. Resultados: se revisó un total de 25 artículos que evidenciaron alteraciones en valores de laboratorio en términos de biomarcadores inflamatorios, de coagulación, bioquímicos y hematológicos capaces de interferir en la funcionalidad del organismo, con la posibilidad de derivar en complicaciones clínicas, como ser hemorragias, edemas y tromboembolias, volviendo así fundamental la elaboración de un plan de atención de Enfermería. Consideraciones finales: los biomarcadores de laboratorio son importantes para identificar pacientes con riesgo de cuadros de enfermedad graves u mortalidad, contribuyendo de esta manera a definir diagnósticos y acciones de Enfermería en cuidados intensivos.
Objective: to research, in the literature, the laboratory profile of patients severely affected by COVID-19, as well as to organize a Nursing care plan according to the changes in biomarkers listed in this review. Method: an integrative review carried out in the MEDLINE and PubMed databases. Articles involving adult and hospitalized patients were included. Those that did not answer the guiding question were excluded, as well as genetic or immunological studies, repeated studies and opinion articles. Subsequently, Nursing diagnoses and interventions were listed for the laboratory alterations found. Results: a total of 25 articles were reviewed, which showed laboratory changes in inflammatory, coagulation, biochemical and hematological biomarkers capable of interfering with functionality of the body and which may lead to clinical complications such as bleeding, edema and thromboembolism, making it essential for Nurses to prepare a care plan. Final considerations: laboratory biomarkers are important for identifying patients at risk of severity and mortality, contributing to defining Nursing diagnoses and course of action in intensive care.

Abstract Objective Investigate the auditory function of the elderly using the middle latency potentials. Methodology Group 1 (G1): 20 healthy individuals of both genders, older than 60 years, without hearing loss. Group 2 (G2): 20 healthy individuals of both sexes, older than 60 years, with hearing loss in frequencies from 4 to 8 kHz. Potential recording was performed with unilateral and bilateral stimulation and the Binaural Interaction Component was calculated. Results Na latency in C3A1 was greater in the stimulation of the right ear in G2 and the amplitude of Na-Pa was greater in the stimulation of the right ear and recording in C3A1 in G1. The latency of the Pa component was higher in the stimulation of the right ear recorded in C4A2. The Pb component in G2 by bilateral stimulation and recorded in C4A2 had higher latency. The first and second negative and positive peaks presented greater amplitude in G1. In C3A1, the 1st negative peak was more negative in G1 and the 2nd positive peak showed greater amplitude in C4A2 in both groups. Conclusion The transmission of auditory information to the primary auditory cortex is impaired with aging, especially in unilateral stimulation, reinforced by losses in elderly people with peripheral hearing loss, such as in the binaural interaction at the cortical and subcortical levels. Thus, the AMLR has shown to be a sensitive examination to investigate neuroauditory disorders in the elderly, especially related to high-frequency hearing loss and primary auditory cortex dysfunctions caused by the aging process.

Intestinal mucositis (IM) is a frequent adverse effect in anticancer therapy without standard treatment. The oil obtained from sucupira (Pterodon emarginatus) has anti-inflammatory properties, and the soybean lecithin reduces the intestinal toxicity of several xenobiotics. However, their water insolubility impairs the in vivo application. For this reason, we evaluated if the nanoencapsulation of sucupira oil (SO) in lecithin-based nanocapsules (SO-NC) could be a therapeutically effective system for the treatment of IM in murine cisplatin (CDDP)-induced intestinal mucositis model. SO was analyzed by LC-HRMS/MS and HPLC. SO-NC was prepared by nanoprecipitation and characterized using DLS, HPLC, and AFM. Mice body weight and food consumption were assessed daily during experimental mucositis induced by CDDP. The animals were euthanized, and intestinal permeability, inï¬ammatory mediators, and intestinal histology were performed. SO-NC demonstrated adequate characteristics for oral administration as size under 300 nm, IP < 0.3, high EE, and spherical shape. In vitro cytotoxicity performed against RAW 264.7 cell lines resulted in cell viability above 80 % confirming the non-cytotoxic profile of SO (IC50 268 µg/mL) and SO-NC (IC50 118.5 µg/mL) up to 117.2 µg/mL. The untreated mice showed intestinal toxicity after i.p. of CDDP, principally weight loss, increased intestinal permeability, and MPO and TNF-α levels. Surprisingly, the administration of SO to CDDP-mucositis animals did not circumvent the CDDP effects and increased intestinal permeability. However, SO-NC proved efficient in mitigating the experimental intestinal mucositis by improving intestinal epithelium architecture, reducing intestinal permeability, and improving the MPO levels. In conclusion, SO-NC can positively impact intestinal mucositis by promoting mucosal recovery. This is a promising strategy for developing a new treatment for intestinal mucositis.

Mosquitoes can be vectors of pathogens and transmit diseases to both animals and humans. Species of the genus Culex are part of the cycle of neglected diseases, especially Culex quinquefasciatus, which is an anthropophilic vector of lymphatic filariasis. Natural products can be an alternative to synthetic insecticides for vector control; however, the main issue is the poor water availability of some compounds from plant origin. In this context, nanoemulsions are kinetic stable delivery systems of great interest for lipophilic substances. The objective of this study was to investigate the larvicidal activity of the Hyptis suaveolens essential oil nanoemulsion on Cx. quinquefasciatus. The essential oil showed a predominance of monoterpenes with retention time (RT) lower than 15 min. The average size diameter of the emulsions (sorbitan monooleate/polysorbate 20) was ≤ 200 nm. The nanoemulsion showed high larvicidal activity in concentrations of 250 and 125 ppm. CL50 values were 102.41 (77.5253−149.14) ppm and 70.8105 (44.5282−109.811) ppm after 24 and 48 h, respectively. The mortality rate in the surfactant control was lower than 9%. Scanning micrograph images showed changes in the larvae's integument. This study achieved an active nanoemulsion on Cx. quinquefasciatus through a low-energy-input technique and without using potentially toxic organic solvents. Therefore, it expands the scope of possible applications of H. suaveolens essential oil in the production of high-added-value nanosystems for tropical disease vector control.
