Background: Obesity is a prevalent chronic condition affecting children and adults worldwide, and it seems to influence the timing of tooth eruption. The aim of this study was to assess the as-sociation between weight status at age 12 and the eruption of permanent teeth at ages 12 and 14-15 among schoolchildren from southern Brazil. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, and included a representative sample of 1,528 12-year-old schoolchildren. After 2.5 years, 801 individuals were reexamined. Baseline data collection included a questionnaire, the record-ing of anthropometric measures (height and weight), and clinical examination to register the number of erupted permanent teeth. At follow-up, the eruption stage of second perma-nent molars was recorded. Statistical analysis used Poisson regression. Results: Overweight and obese individuals were 32% and 88% more likely to have com-plete permanent dentition at age 12, respectively (overweight, PR=1.32, 95%CI=1.13-1.55; obese, PR=1.88, 95%CI=1.75-2.02). Obese 12-year-olds were more likely to present erupt-ed #17, #27, #37, and #47 at age 12 and to present completely erupted second molars at age 14-15 than normal weight ones. Conclusions: This population-based study found a significant association between over-weight/obesity at age 12 and early tooth eruption at ages 12 and 14-15 among schoolchil-dren from southern Brazil. This study evaluated the efficacy of fluoride gel in arresting active non-cavitated caries lesions in permanent teeth. This randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial randomized 100 schoolchildren aged 10.7 ± 2.2 years to test treatment (1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride [APF] gel) or control treatment (placebo gel) for 4-6 applications at weekly intervals. Data collection included the visible plaque index, gingival bleeding index, visible plaque accumulation on the occlusal surfaces, eruption stage, and dental caries. The association between group and lesion arrestment was assessed using logistic regression, and estimates were adjusted for plaque accumulation over the lesion at baseline, surface type, and tooth type. Models were fitted using generalized estimating equations for accounting for the clustering of data (i.e., the same individual contributed > 1 lesion). Ninety-eight children completed the study (48 fluoride and 50 placebo). When all dental surfaces were analyzed, the likelihood of lesion arrestment was similar between both groups (p > 0.05). A secondary analysis including only the occlusal lesions in molars showed that for teeth under eruption, lesions receiving the 1.23% APF gel were about 3-fold more likely to become arrested than lesions receiving the placebo gel (OR = 2.85; 95%CI = 1.23-6.61; p = 0.01). No significant difference was detected for molars with complete eruption (p > 0.05). The benefit of fluoride gel for arresting non-cavitated caries lesions could not be identified by clinical assessment in this short-term trial. Notwithstanding, when the cariogenic challenge was greater (as on the occlusal surfaces of erupting molars), 1.23% APF gel treatment was an important tool for caries control.

Background and Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence, extent, risk indicators, and intraoral distribution of underlying dentin shadows (UDS) in the occlusal surfaces of the permanent posterior teeth. Subjects and Methods: A total of 1197 adolescents were included in the study (participation rate of 72.3%). The association between the independent variables, on the one hand, and the prevalence and extent of UDS were assessed using multilevel Poisson regression models. The prevalence ratios (PR), rate ratios (RR), and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated. The overall prevalence of UDS was 8.8% (95% CI = 6.0-11.5), with an overall mean of 0.13 (95% CI = 0.08-0.17) lesions per individual. Those with UDS exhibited a mean of 1.45 (95% CI = 1.28-1.62) lesions. Results: Lower family income (PR = 1.58; 95% CI = 1.03-2.41) and caries activity (PR = 1.53; 95% CI = 1.01-2.31) were significantly associated with UDS prevalence, while age ≥17 years (RR = 1.43; 95% CI = 1.03-1.99) and caries activity (RR = 1.63; 95% CI = 1.55-2.30) were significantly associated with caries extent. The most commonly affected teeth were lower first molars, followed by upper first molars and lower second molars. Conclusion: This study found a low prevalence and extent of UDS in the occlusal surface. Sociodemographic variables and caries activity were associated with the occurrence of UDS.

Despite composite resins capacity to mimic dental tissues, they can discolor over time. However, there is no information on the effect of prebrushing mouthwashes on the composite resin staining. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of prebrushing mouthwashes on the color stability of three composite resins. Twenty specimens of each resin were prepared: Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE ­S Paul, MN, USA), Charisma (Heraeus Kulzer GmbH - Hanau - Germany) e EvoluX (Dentsply- Petrópolis - Brazil). Groups were randomly divided accord to the treatment: immersion in prebrushing mouthwash (test group) or immersion in deionized water (control group). Test groups were immersed in 10 ml of prebrushing mouthwash Plax Magic (Colgate-Palmolive, São Bernardo do Campo, SP, Brazil) for 60 s three times a day during 35 days following the manufacturer's instructions. Color measurements were performed after 24 h of specimen's preparation and after 7, 14, 21, and 35 days of immersion time. Results showed that prebrushing mouthwash Plax Magic promoted a color change in all the tested materials and evaluation time. The color change was greater in composite resin Charisma, followed by Z250 and EvoluX. Therefore, prebrushing mouthwash promoted a color change in all the materials used. Composite resin Charisma demonstrated less color stability than Filtek Z250 resin and EvoluX resin, which was the most stable. (AU)


Apesar da capacidade das resinas compostas de mimetizar os tecidos dentais, esses materiais podem ter sua cor alterada com o tempo. No entanto, não há informação na literatura sobre o efeito de evidenciadores de placa na estabilidade de cor desses materiais. Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito de um evidenciador de placa na estabilidade de cor e três resinas compostas. Para isso, 20 espécimes de cada resina foram preparados: Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE ­S Paul, MN, EUA), Charisma (Heraeus Kulzer GmbH - Hanau - Alemanha) e EvoluX (Dentsply- Petrópolis - Brasil). Os grupos foram aleatoriamente divididos de acordo com o tratamento a ser submetido: imersão no evidenciador de placa (grupo teste) ou imersão em água deionizada (grupo controle). Os grupos teste foram imersos em 10 ml do evidenciador de placa Plax Magic (Colgate Palmolive, São Bernardo do Campo, SP, Brasil) por 60 s três vezes por dia durante 35 dias, de acordo com a orientações de uso do fabricante. As leituras de cor foram feitas após 24 h da preparação dos espécimes e após 7, 14, 21 e 35 dias de imersão. Os resultados mostraram que o evidenciador de placa Plax Magic promoveu alteração de cor em todos os materiais usados e em todos os tempos de leitura. A alteração de cor foi maior na resina Charisma, seguida da Z250 e EvoluX. Portanto, o evidenciador de placa promove alteração de cor em todos os materiais testados. A resina composta Charisma demonstrou menor estabilidade de cor que as resinas Z250 e EvoluX, que, por sua vez, foi a mais estável. (AU)

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the impact of dental caries on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of preschool children. Methods: A literature search was undertaken through PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and TRIP databases to verify available studies about the topic. Two reviewers independently selected the studies, extracted the data, and assessed the bias risk. Global meta-analysis was carried out comparing means and standard deviations of the OHRQoL overall score from preschool children with and without caries. Subgroup analysis was conducted using different cutoff points for caries: decayed, missing, or filled teeth (dmft) greater than or equal to one and greater than or equal to six. Results: From 597 potentially eligible studies, 63 were selected for full-text analysis and 29 were included in the review: 12 for quantitative analysis and 17 for qualitative analysis. Most studies were conducted in Brazil; Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) was the instrument used in most studies to evaluate OHRQoL. A dmft index at least of one was sufficient to negatively impact the OHRQoL of preschool children, although a higher cutoff point for caries augmented the difference between groups. Bias risk was low. Conclusions: Caries might be associated with negative impact on the oral health-related quality of life of preschool children, and this association tends to increase as the disease severity worsens.

O aumento na ocorrência de fluorose dentária, observado nos últimos anos, tende a promover maior procura pela resolução estética dos manchamentos, o que é geralmente feito com a aplicação de técnicas de erosão-abrasão. Pode-se supor que a abrasão fisiológica e a erosão ácida que ocorrem ao longo da vida atuem no sentido de atenuar a severidade das manchas de fluorose. O presente artigo apresenta um caso de atenuação de manchamentos por fluorose dentária nos dentes anteriores de um paciente de 36 anos que aos 15 havia recebido tratamento erosivo-abrasivo apenas em seus incisivos 11 e 21. Isso permitiu que, após duas décadas, fosse possível comparar os dentes tratados com aqueles que sofreram apenas desgaste fisiológico e a constatação de que, embora as manchas ainda permaneçam, o aspecto de ambos é estético e socialmente aceitável.


The increased prevalence of dental fluorosis observed in recent years tends to promote an increased demand for esthetic resolution of tooth staining, which is usually made by erosion-abrasion techniques. It can be assumed that the physiological abrasion and acid erosion that occur throughout life act to mitigate the severity of fluorosis. This article presents a case of mitigation of fluorosis stains in the anterior teeth of a 36-year-old patient who had received, at 15 years, erosive/abrasive treatment only on his incisors 11 and 21. After two decades, it was possible to compare the treated teeth with those who suffered only physiological wear. It was possible to find that in spite the stains were still present, their clinical aspect is esthetic and socially acceptable.

Introdução: A resina composta é um material versátil em Odontologia Estética, principalmente por suas propriedades ópticas, dentre as quais a fluorescência. Poucos são os estudos que avaliaram esta propriedade e a comparação dos resultados encontrados torna-se difícil em função da inexistência de padronização nas metodologias na confecção e na armazenagem dos corpos de prova. Objetivo: Verificar a influência do polimento superficial e do meio de armazenagem, em estudos in vitro, em que se avalia a propriedade óptica de fluorescência em resinas compostas. Material e Método: Foram preparados 70 corpos de prova circulares (10 mm × 2 mm ) com resina composta microhíbrida (Opallis,- A2E - FGM.) Os meios de armazenagem foram: água deionizada, água da torneira e saliva artificial. Os protocolos de polimento superficial, realizados em politriz após a obtenção dos corpos de prova, utilizaram lixas de granulações 600, 1200 e 2500. Os valores de intensidade de fluorescência foram avaliados através do espectrofotômetro Cary Eclipse, após 1, 7 e 21 dias. Resultado: Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa na Intensidade de Fluorescência entre os grupos submetidos aos diferentes protocolos de polimento. Quanto aos meios de armazenagem, a partir do sétimo dia, a variação de fluorescência foi significativamente maior em água da torneira e deionizada, quando comparada à variação observada em saliva artificial, resultado que se manteve após 21 dias. Conclusão: O protocolo de polimento superficial não promoveu alterações significativas na fluorescência da resina composta avaliada. Quanto ao meio de armazenagem, a intensidade de fluorescência foi menos afetada quando em saliva artificial.


Introduction: Resin composite is a versatile material in cosmetic dentistry due mainly to its optical properties, fluorescence among them. There are a few studies which assessed such property and a comparison of results becomes difficult due to the lack of a pattern in the specimens storage and confection methodologies. Objective: Verify the influence of superficial polishing and means of storage in in vitro studies that assess the optical property of fluorescence in dental resin composites. Material and Method: 70 circular specimens (10 mm × 2 mm) were prepared with microhybrid composite resin (Opallis, - A2E - FGM). The means of storage were: deionized water, tap water and artificial saliva. The superficial polishing protocols used 600, 1200 and 2500 sandpaper grit sizes, accomplished with polisher after specimens were obtained. The fluorescence intensity values were assessed using Cary Eclipse Fluorescence Spectrophotometer after 1, 7 and 21 days. Result: There was not a statistically significant difference in Fluorescence Intensity among the groups submitted to the different polishing protocols. Concerning the means of storage, from the seventh day on the fluorescence variation was significantly bigger in tap and deionized water, compared to artificial saliva, such result kept on after 21 days. Conclusion: the superficial polishing protocol did not promote significant changes in the assessed resin composite fluorescence. Regarding the means of storage, the fluorescence intensity was less affected when in artificial saliva.
