OBJECTIVE: To provide information regarding the procedures, safety, tolerability, and measurement properties of the 6-min step test. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus (from inception until January 2024). REVIEW METHODS: Studies that examined adults with acute or chronic diseases, and outcomes related to procedures, safety, tolerability, or measurement properties of the 6-min step test were included. Outcome data were summarized and combined in meta-analyses. The quality of included studies was assessed by the Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments checklist, and the quality of evidence was determined according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation system. RESULTS: Fourteen studies, involving 847 participants, were included. All studies performed the 6-min step test in 6 min; however, some studies varied the step height and the use of upper limb support. The test appears to be safe and well tolerated by individuals. Moderate- to high-quality evidence demonstrated appropriate results for test-retest reliability (4 studies; Intraclass correlation coefficient 0.96; 95% CI 0.91-0.98; n = 125), criterion validity (4 studies; r = 0.53; 95% CI 0.30-0.71; n = 307), and construct validity (4 studies; r = 0.63; 95% CI 0.52-0.73; n = 233). CONCLUSION: This review provides recommendations for applying the 6-min step test in clinical and research settings. No adverse events were reported, and the test appears to be well tolerated. Adequate results were found for test-retest reliability, criterion validity, and construct validity. REVIEW REGISTRATION: PROSPERO (CRD42022347744).

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between walking measurements (i.e., walking speed, walking performance and walking confidence), and participation in ambulatory people with chronic stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participation was measured using the mobility domain of Brazilian version of the Stroke Impact Scale 3.0. Walking measures were walking speed, assessed by 10-m Walk Test, walking performance, assessed by ABILOCO, walking confidence, assessed by mGES. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to explore the relationships between the walking measures and social participation, and step-wise multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify which walking measures would explain participation after stroke. RESULTS: Ninety-five chronic stroke individuals (38 men), with a mean age of 67 (SD 13) years were assessed. Significant positive correlations, of high magnitude, were found between participation and all walking measures (r ≥ .53; p < .001). Regarding the regression analysis, walking confidence alone explained 44% (F = 72.4; p < .001) of the variance in participation. When perceived locomotion ability was included in the model, the explained variance increased to 48% (F = 42.8; p < .001). CONCLUSION: All walking measures were correlated with social participation after stroke, but only perceived locomotion ability and walking confidence explained the variance in participation. Clinicians should be encouraged to evaluate real-life performance and personal factors that may limit community participation after stroke.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to examine the effects of home-based exercises in comparison with centre-based exercises for improving the paretic upper limb after stroke. DATA SOURCES: AMED, MEDLINE, EMBASE CINAHL, Cochrane, PsycINFO, and PEDro databases. REVIEW METHODS: Only randomized clinical trials were included. Participants in the reviewed studies were adults at any time after stroke. The experimental intervention was home-based exercises compared with centre-based exercises. Outcome data related to strength, motor recovery, dexterity, activity, and participation were extracted from the eligible trials and combined in meta-analyses. The quality of included trials was assessed by the PEDro scores. The quality of evidence was determined according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system. RESULTS: Eight trials, involving 488 participants, were included. Most trials (63%) delivered semi-supervised interventions (amount of supervision 3-43%), and three trials provided full supervision. Random-effects meta-analyses provided moderate- to high-quality evidence that home- and centre-based exercises provide similar effects on motor recovery (MD 1.4 points; 95% CI -0.9 to 3.8), dexterity (MD -0.01 pegs/s; 95% CI -0.04 to 0.05), upper limb activity performance (SMD -0.04; 95% CI -0.25 to 0.18), and quality of movement (0.1 points; 95% CI -0.2 to 0.4). Effects on strength were also similar but the quality of the evidence was rated as low. No trials examined effects on participation. CONCLUSION: Effects of home-based prescribed exercises on upper limb motor recovery, dexterity, and activity are likely to be similar to improvements obtained by centre-based exercises after stroke.

A significant interaction was found between walking speed plus home adaptations and performance of daily living activities (PR 3.42; 95%CI: 1.04 to 11.29). The probability of independence was 40% among slow walkers (< 0.4 m/s), increasing up to 70% among fast walkers (> 0.8 m/s), and to 90% among those who also have home adaptations. Faster walking speed combined with home adaptations was the main factor associated with long-term independence after stroke.

Resumo Objetivou-se estimar a prevalência do acidente vascular cerebral (AVC) em brasileiros mais velhos, bem como identificar fatores sociodemográficos, de saúde, de serviços de saúde e ambientais associados à independência em atividades de vida diária. Trata-se de um estudo transversal de base populacional (Estudo Longitudinal da Saúde de Idosos Brasileiros 2015-2016). Dos 9.412 participantes, 536 indivíduos (≥ 50 anos) tiveram AVC e foram incluídos. A prevalência do AVC foi de 5,3% em indivíduos com 50 anos e mais, aumentando para 8% entre indivíduos com 75 anos e mais, com padrão dissimilar entre sexo. A independência foi associada à velocidade da marcha (razão de prevalência [RP] 2,72, IC95%: 1,96-3,77), atividade física (PR 1,24; IC95%: 1,04-1,47) e uso de dispositivos auxiliares de marcha (RP 0,63; IC95%: 0,41-0,96). Encontrou-se interação significativa para velocidade da marcha, adaptações no domicílio e a independência (RP 3,42; IC95%: 1.04-11.29). A probabilidade de independência foi de 40% nas velocidades mais baixas (< 0,4 m/s), e nas velocidades mais elevadas (> 0,8 m/s) foi de 70%, aumentando para 90% quando há adaptações no domicílio. A velocidade rápida da marcha e a adaptação no domicílio foram os principais fatores associados à independência a longo prazo após o AVC.

PURPOSE: To investigate the test-retest reliability and measurement error of the Brazilian version of the modified Gait Efficacy scale (mGES-Brazil) in individuals who have had stroke. METHODS: The mGES-Brazil was applied on two occasions, five to seven days apart, in a research laboratory setting. Test-retest reliability and measurement error, which included the standard error of measurement (SEM), smallest detectable change (SDC), and analysis of the limits of agreement by the Bland-Altman plots, were examined. RESULTS: Fifty individuals who have had stroke (18 men), with a mean age of 64 ± 11 years, were evaluated. All individual items showed good reliability (Intra-class Correlation Coefficient - ICC2,1 > 0.90). The ICC was 0.98 (95% CI 0.97 to 0.99) and the Bland and Altman plots revealed no systematic changes in the mean test-retest scores. The SEM (SEM%) was 3 (5%), within the recommended values, while the SDC was 8 points. CONCLUSION: The mGES-Brazil demonstrated to be reliable to be applied within clinical and research contexts for the assessment of changes in walking confidence of individuals who have had stroke. Changes in mGES scores ≥8 points reflect real changes.

PURPOSE: To examine whether using a cane would improve spatiotemporal parameters of walking, i.e., speed, stride length, cadence, and symmetry after stroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Searches were conducted in eight databases. The experimental condition was walking with a cane. Four outcomes were of interest: walking speed, stride length, cadence, and symmetry. RESULTS: Twelve studies were included. Results from nine studies suggested that individuals with stroke walked 0.01 m/s (SD 0.06) slower with a single-point cane, compared with no cane. Two studies suggested a reduction in cadence (MD-5 steps/min, SD2) and an increase in stride length (MD 0.08 m, SD 0.01). Three studies suggested that individuals walked 0.06 m/s (SD 0.07) slower with a four-point cane, compared with no cane. Four studies suggested that individuals walked 0.06 m/s (SD 0.04) faster with a single- point cane compared with a four-point cane. Results regarding other outcomes were inconclusive. CONCLUSIONS: Results showed no worthwhile improvements in spatiotemporal parameters of walking with a single-point cane and a slight reduction with a four-point cane, compared with no cane. Individuals walked slightly faster with a single-point cane compared with a four-point cane, but the evidence is insufficient to support this superiority.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONA single-point cane may not improve spatiotemporal parameters of walking after stroke.Walking with a four-point cane may slightly decrease spatiotemporal parameters of walking.Canes may be prescribed without the fear of negatively impairing walking kinematics.

PURPOSE: To determine, in Brazil, the proportion of individuals who return to a paid work after stroke, and the factors which predict this. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective observational cohort study was carried out for six months. Participants were recruited early after stroke from four public hospitals. The outcome of interest was return to work, and the following predictors were investigated: age, sex, education, marital status, contribution to household income, type of work, independence, and depression. Logistic regression was used to identify multivariate predictors of return to work. RESULTS: Of the 117 included participants, 52 (44%) had returned to work by 6 months. Contribution to household income (OR 2.4; 95% CI 1.0 to 5.9), being a white-collar worker (OR 4.0; 95% CI 1.8 to 8.6) and being independent in daily activities at 3 months (OR 10.6; 95% CI 2.9 to 38.3), in combination, positively predicted return to work. CONCLUSIONS: Less than 50% of stroke survivors returned to work six months after stroke. Among predictors, only the level of dependence in daily activities is a modifiable factor. Interventions aimed at reducing disability after stroke might increase rates of return to work.Implications for rehabilitationIn Brazil, less than 50% of stroke survivors returned to work six months after stroke.Clinicians may collect information regarding household income, type of work and dependence in daily activities to estimate chances of returning to work, in developing countries.Being independent at 3 months was the strongest predictor of return to work; therefore, interventions aimed at reducing disability after stroke may increase rates of return to work.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Telephone-based assessment may be a valuable and cost-effective approach to improve monitoring and follow-up assessments in patients and research participants. Telephone-based assessment may be of particular value during times when it is important to reduce in-person contract, such as during the Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to investigate concurrent validity of the telephone-based administration of the ABILHAND for the assessment of manual ability in individuals with stroke. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study design, participants with stroke were invited to answer the ABILHAND questionnaire on 2 randomized occasions, face to face and by telephone, 5 to 7 days apart. The mean difference (MD) between the interviews was calculated (95% confidence interval [95% CI]) to investigate the concurrent validity. Intraclass correlation (ICC) and weighted κ coefficients were used to investigate the agreement between face-to-face and telephone-based administration. RESULTS: One hundred two participants (50 men; mean age = 65 years, SD = 13 years) were included. No significant differences were observed between the mean scores obtained with face-to-face and telephone-based administration of the ABILHAND (MD = -0.06; 95% CI, -0.72 to 0.60). Very high agreement was found between face-to-face and telephone-based administration (ICC = 0.90; 95% CI, 0.85 to 0.93) on the ABILHAND total scores. Most of the individual items had moderate or substantial κ agreement. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Telephone-based administration of the ABILHAND is valid for the assessment of manual ability after stroke. Clinicians and researchers may use the ABILHAND for monitoring manual ability in persons with stroke and/or screening potential research participants.Video Abstract available for more insights from the authors (see the Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1, http://links.lww.com/JNPT/A318).

Objective: To explore the relationships between selected measures of motor impairments and activities involving the lower-limbs in ambulatory people with chronic stroke. Design: Motor impairment measures included maximal isometric strength and motor coordination. Activity measures included walking speed, stair ascent/descent cadences, and the time to perform the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Results: Ninety individuals were included. The correlations between all motor impairment and activity measures were significant (0.18 < r < 0.52, p < 0.05). Motor coordination and strength of the knee flexor muscles explained 30% (F = 20.3; p < 0.001) of the variance in walking speed, 32% (F = 19.1; p < 0.001) of stair ascent, and 31% (F = 16.8; p < 0.001) of stair descent cadence. Regarding the TUG, only motor coordination reached significance and explained 13% (F = 13.4; p < 0.001) of the variance. Conclusion: Measures of strength and motor coordination of the paretic lower limb were significantly correlated with all activity measures. However, despite the fact that knee flexor strength explained some variance in walking speed and stair ascent/descent cadences, motor coordination was the only measure that explained the variances in all three selected activity measures. These findings are innovative for neurological rehabilitation, since this is the first study to demonstrate that deficits in motor coordination of the paretic lower limb best explained limitations in performing different lower-limb activities.

BACKGROUND: The ABILOCO is a self-reported questionnaire, specific for individuals with stroke, for the assessment of ability of locomotion. The ABILOCO has been investigated using the Rasch model and has shown satisfactory measurement properties. However, its test-retest reliability has not been investigated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the test-retest reliability, that is, agreement, systematic and random variability of the ABILOCO Questionnaire in individuals with chronic stroke. DESIGN: A test-retest reliability study. SETTING: Research laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-one individuals (21 men and 10 women; mean age, 60 years), who had poststroke hemiparesis. INTERVENTION: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENT: The ABILOCO was applied twice, on two occasions, 5 to 7 days apart. Test-retest reliability was investigated, as follows: agreement by the calculation of intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs); systematic variability by the change in the mean; random variability by the standard error of measurement (SEM) and smallest real difference (SRD). RESULTS: Two outliers were identified in the sample. The ICC values for the whole sample were 0.76 (CI 95% 0.56 to 0.88), whereas the SEM (SEM%) and SRD (SRD%) were 0.55 (21%) and 1.52 (58%), respectively. CONCLUSION: The ABILOCO showed to be reliable to be applied within clinical and research contexts for the assessment of changes in locomotion ability of a group of individuals with chronic stroke. However, it appears to be less suitable to detect changes at individual levels. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

OBJECTIVE: Dyspnea is a relevant outcome to be taken into consideration during stroke rehabilitation. Prevalence, severity, and effects of this condition on individuals with stroke remain uncertain. This study investigated the prevalence and severity of dyspnea after a stroke, as well the associations between dyspnea, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. METHODS: A telephone-based survey was conducted with 285 individuals with stroke. The survey included information regarding the onset and severity of the dyspnea, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. Prevalence of dyspnea was reported as percentage of individuals who had the symptom. Chi-square tests were used to investigate the associations between dyspnea, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. Relative risks and respective 95% confidence intervals were calculated. RESULTS: Out of the 285 participants, 124 (44%) reported having dyspnea after stroke. Severe symptoms were reported by 51% of the participants with dyspnea. In addition, dyspnea limited activity and restricted social participation in 85% and 49% of the participants, respectively. Dyspnea was significantly correlated with activity limitations (r=0.87; 95% CI 0.82-0.92; p<0.01) and participation restrictions (r=0.53; 95% CI 0.46-0.62; p<0.01). The analyses indicated that individuals with dyspnea were more likely to report that it limited their activities (RR: 6.5; 95% CI 4.3-9.9) and restricted social participation (RR: 1.7; 95% CI 1.5-2.0). CONCLUSIONS: Dyspnea is an important symptom after stroke and showed to be associated with activity limitations and restrictions in community participation. Earlier detection of dyspnea in people with stroke, followed by appropriate management, is strongly recommended and has the potential to improve activity and social participation.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to systematically review all current interventions that have been utilized to improve respiratory function and activity after stroke. METHODS: Specific searches were conducted. The experimental intervention had to be planned, structured, repetitive, purposive, and delivered with the aim of improving respiratory function. Outcomes included respiratory strength (maximum inspiratory pressure [PImax], maximum expiratory pressure [PEmax]) and endurance, lung function (FVC, FEV1, and peak expiratory flow [PEF]), dyspnea, and activity. The quality of the randomized trials was assessed by the PEDro scale using scores from the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (www.pedro.org.au), and risk of bias was assessed in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. RESULTS: The 17 included trials had a mean PEDro score of 5.7 (range 4-8) and involved 616 participants. Meta-analyses showed that respiratory muscle training significantly improved all outcomes of interest: PImax (weighted mean difference 11 cm H2O, 95% CI 7-15, I2 = 0%), PEmax (8 cm H2O, 95% CI 2-15, I2 = 65%), FVC (0.25 L, 95% CI 0.12-0.37, I2 = 29%), FEV1 (0.24 L, 95% CI 0.17-0.30, I2 = 0%), PEF (0.51 L/s, 95% CI 0.10-0.92, I2 = 0%), dyspnea (standardized mean difference -1.6 points, 95% CI -2.2 to -0.9; I2 = 0%), and activity (standardized mean difference 0.78, 95% CI 0.22-1.35, I2 = 0%). Meta-analyses found no significant results for the effects of breathing exercises on lung function. For the remaining interventions (ie, aerobic and postural exercises) and the addition of electrical stimulation, meta-analyses could not be performed. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review reports 5 possible interventions used to improve respiratory function after stroke. Respiratory muscle training proved to be effective for improving inspiratory and expiratory strength, lung function, and dyspnea, and benefits were carried over to activity. However, there is still no evidence to accept or refute the efficacy of aerobic, breathing, and postural exercises, or the addition of electrical stimulation in respiratory function.

BACKGROUND: Canes are usually prescribed for individuals with stroke with the purpose of improving walking and increasing safety. However, there is no consensus regarding the clinical effects of these aids on walking and participation. OBJECTIVE: This study will examine the efficacy of the provision of a cane to improve walking and increase participation after stroke. METHODS: This is a two-arm, prospectively registered, randomized trial with concealed allocation, blinded measurers, and intention-to-treat analysis. Fifty individuals with chronic stroke, categorized as slow or intermediate walkers (walking speeds ≤0.8m/s), will participate. The experimental group will receive a single-point cane and instructions to use the cane anytime they need to walk. The control group will receive a placebo intervention, consisting of self-stretching exercises of the lower limb muscles and instructions to not use assistive devices. The primary outcome will be comfortable walking speed. Secondary outcomes will include walking step length, walking cadence, walking capacity, walking confidence, and participation. Outcomes will be collected by a researcher blinded to group allocation at baseline (Week 0), after intervention (Week 4), and one month beyond intervention (Week 8). CONCLUSION: The provision of a single-point cane may help improving walking of slow and intermediate walkers after stroke. If walking is enhanced, the benefits may be carried over to participation, and individuals may experience greater free-living physical activity at home and in the community.

OBJECTIVES: To establish the deficits of motor coordination of the lower limbs after stroke, in comparison with healthy controls, and to investigate whether the magnitude of the deficits would be influenced by the levels of motor recovery. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS: Chronic stroke patients and healthy subjects. METHODS: Lower-limb motor coordination of both stroke and healthy volunteers was measured using the Lower Extremity Motor Coordination Test (LEMOCOT). The motor coordination deficits of the participants with stroke were analysed all together and separated, according to their levels of motor recovery, measured using the Fugl-Meyer lower-limb motor section scores. RESULTS: Ninety-seven individuals with chronic stroke, 55 men, mean age 58 years, were evaluated. Motor coordination was significantly impaired on both paretic (mean: -22 touches; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) -24 to -19; deficit: 61%) and non-paretic (mean -6 touches; 95% CI -8 to -4; deficit: 17%) lower limbs. Significant differences in the LEMOCOT scores were found between the levels of motor recovery (p < 0.01), except between the participants with marked and moderate impairments. CONCLUSION: Motor coordination of the lower limbs is significantly impaired after stroke, but the deficits of the non-paretic lower limb (17%) appear not to be clinically relevant. These findings suggest that interventions prescribed to improve motor coordination after stroke should focus on the paretic lower limb and/or include bilateral activities.

QUESTION: After stroke, does respiratory muscle training increase respiratory muscle strength and/or endurance? Are any benefits carried over to activity and/or participation? Does it reduce respiratory complications? DESIGN: Systematic review of randomised or quasi-randomised trials. PARTICIPANTS: Adults with respiratory muscle weakness following stroke. INTERVENTION: Respiratory muscle training aimed at increasing inspiratory and/or expiratory muscle strength. OUTCOME MEASURES: Five outcomes were of interest: respiratory muscle strength, respiratory muscle endurance, activity, participation and respiratory complications. RESULTS: Five trials involving 263 participants were included. The mean PEDro score was 6.4 (range 3 to 8), showing moderate methodological quality. Random-effects meta-analyses showed that respiratory muscle training increased maximal inspiratory pressure by 7 cmH2O (95% CI 1 to 14) and maximal expiratory pressure by 13 cmH2O (95% CI 1 to 25); it also decreased the risk of respiratory complications (RR 0.38, 95% CI 0.15 to 0.96) compared with no/sham respiratory intervention. Whether these effects carry over to activity and participation remains uncertain. CONCLUSION: This systematic review provided evidence that respiratory muscle training is effective after stroke. Meta-analyses based on five trials indicated that 30minutes of respiratory muscle training, five times per week, for 5 weeks can be expected to increase respiratory muscle strength in very weak individuals after stroke. In addition, respiratory muscle training is expected to reduce the risk of respiratory complications after stroke. Further studies are warranted to investigate whether the benefits are carried over to activity and participation. REGISTRATION: PROSPERO (CRD42015020683). OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the available evidence on the efficacy of walking training associated with virtual reality-based training in patients with stroke. The specific questions were: Is walking training associated with virtual reality-based training effective in increasing walking speed after stroke? Is this type of intervention more effective in increasing walking speed, than non-virtual reality-based walking interventions? METHOD: A systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials was conducted. Participants were adults with chronic stroke and the experimental intervention was walking training associated with virtual reality-based training to increase walking speed. The outcome data regarding walking speed were extracted from the eligible trials and were combined using a meta-analysis approach. RESULTS: Seven trials representing eight comparisons were included in this systematic review. Overall, the virtual reality-based training increased walking speed by 0.17 m/s (IC 95% 0.08 to 0.26), compared with placebo/nothing or non-walking interventions. In addition, the virtual reality-based training increased walking speed by 0.15 m/s (IC 95% 0.05 to 0.24), compared with non-virtual reality walking interventions. CONCLUSIONS: This review provided evidence that walking training associated with virtual reality-based training was effective in increasing walking speed after stroke, and resulted in better results than non-virtual reality interventions. .


OBJETIVO: Revisar estudos sobre a eficácia do treino direcionado à marcha associado à realidade virtual em pacientes pós-acidente vascular encefálico (AVE). As perguntas clínicas foram: o treino direcionado à marcha associado à realidade virtual é eficaz para promover aumento em velocidade de marcha de indivíduos com hemiparesia? Essa modalidade de intervenção promove maior aumento em velocidade de marcha comparada a outras intervenções sem uso de realidade virtual? MÉTODO: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática com metanálise de ensaios clínicos aleatorizados. Os participantes eram adultos pós-AVE, e a intervenção experimental considerada foi o treino direcionado à marcha associado ao uso de realidade virtual com o objetivo de melhorar a velocidade de marcha. Os dados referentes à velocidade de marcha foram extraídos para combinação por metanálise. RESULTADOS: Sete estudos representando oito comparações foram incluídos nesta revisão sistemática. O treino de marcha associado à realidade virtual aumentou a velocidade de marcha dos participantes, em média, 0,17 m/s (IC 95% 0,08 a 0,26) comparado à intervenção placebo, não intervenção ou intervenção não específica para os membros inferiores. Adicionalmente, o treino associado à realidade virtual aumentou a velocidade de marcha dos participantes, em média, 0,15 m/s (IC 95% 0,05 a 0,24) comparado a diferentes intervenções destinadas aos membros inferiores sem uso de realidade virtual associada. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of hand dominance on the maintenance of gains after home-based modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT). METHOD: Aprevious randomized controlled trial was conducted to examine the addition of trunk restraint to the mCIMT. Twenty-two chronic stroke survivors with mild to moderate motor impairments received individual home-based mCIMT with or without trunk restraints, five times per week, three hours daily over two weeks. In this study, the participants were separated into dominant group, which had their paretic upper limb as dominant before the stroke (n=8), and non-dominant group (n=14) for analyses. The ability to perform unimanual tasks was measured by the Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT) and the Motor Activity Log (MAL), whereas the capacity to perform bimanual tasks was measured using the Bilateral Activity Assessment Scale (BAAS). RESULTS: Analysis revealed significant positive effects on the MAL amount of use and quality of the movement scales, as well as on the BAAS scores after intervention, with no differences between groups. Both groups maintained the bimanual improvements during follow-ups (BAAS-seconds 0.1, 95% CI -10.0 to 10.0), however only the dominant group maintained the unilateral improvements (MAL-amount of use: 1.5, 95% CI 0.7 to 2.3; MAL-quality: 1.3, 95% CI 0.5 to 2.1). CONCLUSIONS: Upper limb dominance did not interfere with the acquisition of upper limb skills after mCIMT. However, the participants whose paretic upper limb was dominant demonstrated better abilities to maintain the unilateral gains. The bilateral improvements were maintained, regardless of upper limb dominance.
