Introduction: In Chile, colorectal cancer covers 11.5% of all malignant neoplasms. Surgery is the cor- nerstone of colon cancer treatment and in stage III patients adjuvant chemotherapy is part of standard treatment. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study, single center, of patients with pathological stage III colon cancer. Main objective of this study is to know if in patients with stage III colon cancer adjuvant chemotherapy is delivered in a timely manner. Results: Between April 2016 and April 2021, 35 patients with pathological stage III colon cancer were operated on. Adjuvant chemotherapy was performed in 80%, and in seven patient during the first eight weeks after surgery. Anastomotic dehiscence occurred in 11.4%, the median hospitalization increased by 2.2 times. Discussion: In this study, adjuvant stage III colon cancer was administered to a high percentage of patients (80%), but we observed a significant delay, since only 25% began treatment during the first 8 weeks post-surgery, which can be explained by multiple factors, with anastomotic dehiscence being an important point to consider. Conclusion: In stage III CC, adjuvant treatment can be delayed by multiple factors, which may affect patient survival; therefore, knowing the causes of this delay could help to establish new strategies, such as neoadjuvant therapy, to improve oncological results.

RESUMO

Bronchiectasis is a suppurative lung disease with heterogeneous phenotypic characteristics. It is defined as abnormal dilation of the bronchi, losing the existing relationship between bronchial sizes and accompanying artery. According to their form, they can be cylindrical, varicose, saccular or cystic. According to its location, they could be diffuse or localized. The diagnosis of bronchiectasis is usually suspected in patients with chronic cough, mucopurulent bronchorrea, and recurrent respiratory infections. The etiology can be varied, being able to classify in cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, when there is cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) gene mutation and not cystic fibrosis, being post infectious the most frequent. Its relationship with childhood is unknown. Severe respiratory infections can predispose in a susceptible subject the so-called theory of the "vicious circle" and the development of these. Persistent bacterial bronchitis in children has been described as a probable cause of not cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis in adults. The treatment is based on the management of symptoms and the prevention of exacerbations. The evidence is poor and many treatments are extrapolated from cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. We are going to describe the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis in adults.

Thin films of poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(vinyl chloride) of different thickness are used to investigate the effect of spatial confinement on the efficiency of bond breaking induced by 2 MeV H^{+} and 2.1 GeV Bi ions. Effective cross sections for oxygen and chlorine loss are extracted for films down to a thickness of about 5 nm and are compared to theoretical estimations based on radial energy density profiles simulated with geant-dna. The cross sections are to a large extent thickness independent, indicating that bond breaking is dominated by short-range processes. This is in contrast to the strongly reduced efficiencies found recently for cratering induced by high-energy ions in similar ultrathin polymer films [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 118302 (2015)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.114.118302].

This study aimed to partially purify the compounds present in decoction of Adiantum capillus-veneris, which are efficient in the induction of phytoalexins in sorghum mesocotyl, by ammonium sulphate (AS) fractionation and gel filtration chromatography (GFC). The decoction of A. capillus-veneris at 1% (weight/volume) was precipitated with AS at the concentration of 0-20%, 20-40%, 40-60%, 60-80% and 80-100%, and these fractions were subjected to GFC. For the decoction not precipitated with AS, nine protein peaks and one carbohydrate peak were obtained with molecular weights ranging from 0.61 to 0.01 KDa. For the AS precipitation, we obtained: for the fraction 0-20%, two protein peaks (0.01 KDa) and two carbohydrate peaks with concentration of sugars ranging from 4.1 to 17.5 µg of sugar mL-1; for the 20-40%, three protein peaks (0.98 to 111.5 KDa) and five carbohydrate peaks (11.3 to 73.7 µg sugar mL-1); for the 40-60%, two protein peaks (0.09 to 111.5 KDa) and two carbohydrate peaks (5.6 to 7.5 µg of sugar mL-1); for the 60-80%, six protein peaks (lower than 0.02 KDa) and two carbohydrate peaks (16.5 to 51.3 µg of sugar mL-1); and for the 80-100%, three protein peaks with molecular weight equivalent to 0.09 KDa. The sorghum mesocotyls were treated with GFC fractions, decoction (1%), acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) (125 mg L-1 a.i. as elicitor reference) and sodium phosphate buffer (10 mM, pH 6.0). The protein peak II (0.09 KDa) from the decoction not precipitated was effective in inducing phytoalexin, exceeding in 6.68% the ASM. Among the fractions, the one with 60-80% of AS increased in 76% the induction of phytoalexin compared to ASM. According to the results, we could obtain protein and/or carbohydrate fractions capable of inducing phytoalexins in sorghum better than the decoction from which they are derived from, showing the potential of these molecules for future research studies on the induction of resistance.

RESUMO

During the last decades, New World monkey (NWM, Platyrrhini, Anthropoideae) comparative cytogenetics has shed light on many fundamental aspects of genome organisation and evolution in this fascinating, but also highly endangered group of neotropical primates. In this review, we first provide an overview about the evolutionary origin of the inferred ancestral NWM karyotype of 2n = 54 chromosomes and about the lineage-specific chromosome rearrangements resulting in the highly divergent karyotypes of extant NWM species, ranging from 2n = 16 in a titi monkey to 2n = 62 in a woolly monkey. Next, we discuss the available data on the chromosome phylogeny of NWM in the context of recent molecular phylogenetic analyses. In the last part, we highlight some recent research on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the large-scale evolutionary genomic changes in platyrrhine monkeys.

RESUMO

This work presents chromosome homology maps between Mus musculus (MMU) and 2 South American rodent species from the Cricetidae group: Necromys lasiurus (NLA, 2n = 34) and Thaptomys nigrita (TNI, 2n = 52), established by ZOO-FISH using mouse chromosome-specific painting probes. Extending previous molecular cytogenetic studies in Neotropical rodents, the purpose of this work was to delineate evolutionary chromosomal rearrangements in Cricetidae rodents and to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships among the Akodontini species. Our phylogenetic reconstruction by maximum parsimony analysis of chromosomal characters confirmed one consistent clade of all Neotropical rodents studied so far. In both species analyzed here, we observed the syntenic association of chromosome segments homologous to MMU 8/13, suggesting that this chromosome form is a synapomorphic trait exclusive to Neotropical rodents. Further, the previously described Akodontini-specific syntenic associations MMU 3/18 and MMU 6/12 were observed in N.lasiurus but not in T. nigrita, although the latter species is considered a member of the Akodontini tribe by some authors. Finally, and in agreement with this finding, N.lasiurus and Akodon serrensis share the derived fission of MMU 13, which places them as basal sister clades within Akodontini.

RESUMO

Though the replacement of European bees by Africanized honey bees in tropical America has attracted considerable attention, little is known about the temporal changes in morphological and genetic characteristics in these bee populations. We examined the changes in the morphometric and genetic profiles of an Africanized honey bee population collected near where the original African swarms escaped, after 34 years of Africanization. Workers from colonies sampled in 1968 and in 2002 were morphometrically analyzed using relative warps analysis and an Automatic Bee Identification System (ABIS). All the colonies had their mitochondrial DNA identified. The subspecies that mixed to form the Africanized honey bees were used as a comparison for the morphometric analysis. The two morphometric approaches showed great similarity of Africanized bees with the African subspecies, Apis mellifera scutellata, corroborating with other markers. We also found the population of 1968 to have the pattern of wing venation to be more similar to A. m. scutellata than the current population. The mitochondrial DNA of European origin, which was very common in the 1968 population, was not found in the current population, indicating selective pressure replacing the European with the African genome in this tropical region. Both morphometric methodologies were very effective in discriminating the A. mellifera groups; the non-linear analysis of ABIS was the most successful in identifying the bees, with more than 94% correct classifications.

The mechanical properties of castor oil-based polyurethane was evaluated considering post-production time and the presence of a catalyst as variables and using bone cement (polymethylmetacrylate) as a comparative pattern. According to proof body type (cylinders or bars) and the used polymer, three experimental groups were established. Such groups were later subdivided according to post-production time, namely, 24, 48, and 72 hours. A compression assay analyzed maximum load and tension, and a folding assay evaluated the folding module and resistance. There were no statistical differences in the values for resistance to compression or folding at 24, 48, and 72 hours after the production of polymethylmetacrylate and polyurethane with or without a catalyst. Castor oil-based polyurethane with a catalyst showed to be the most resistant during the compression assays as its folding module was similar to that of polymethylmetacrylate, and its folding resistance was higher than that of polyurethane without a catalyst. In conclusion, time did not change the mechanical properties of the evaluated composites; the catalyst improved the mechanical performance of castor oil-based polyurethane; castor oil-based polyurethane with a catalyst supported more load during the assay for mechanical resistance to compression than did polymethylmetacrylate.(AU)

RESUMO

In regularly burned grassland on Morro Santana, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, we investigated differences in the floristic composition and their relation to soil properties, aspect and distance from the forest border. In 48 plots of 0.75 m², we identified a total of 201 species from a local species pool of approximately 450 to 500 species. Most species occurred in low frequencies, showing clumpy distribution patterns in the studied area. Multivariate analysis showed that plots close to the forest edge clearly differed from plots in the open grassland concerning composition and structure. Plots exposed to the north differed from plots on the top of the hill both in the composition of species as well as in soil variables, mainly due to shallower soil in the former. No strong relation between soil properties and variation in vegetation composition could be detected at a finer scale. The studied grassland, as all grassland vegetation in southern Brazil, is very rich in species compared to other grassland formations worldwide. However, this high biodiversity and conservational value of Campos vegetation in general has so far not been recognized properly. Disturbance is essential to maintain this open vegetation type and its species richness. Fire should be considered as a management option in the absence of grazing.

This paper presents the karyotype of Callicebus donacophilus pallescens for the first time. The analysis included G-, C-, NOR-banding techniques and FISH with chromosome painting probes from Saguinus oedipus and Homo sapiens. The results were compared with the karyotypes of Callicebus moloch donacophilus and C. moloch previously published. These three karyotypes display the same diploid number (2n = 50) but diverge about the number of biarmed and acrocentric chromosomes. The acrocentrics 14 and 15 from C. m. donacophilus and C. moloch have undergone an in-tandem fusion originating a large acrocentric (pair 10) in C. d. pallescens. The major submetacentric pair (pair 1) from C. d. donacophilus and C. moloch have undergone fission originating two acrocentric pairs in C. d. pallescens (pairs 15 and 22). Herein was evidence that, in spite of the high interspecific variation among Callicebus, most of the chromosomes remained conserved.

RESUMO

A problem in immunohematology is to define the antibody quality which is related to its affinity expressed by the equilibrium constant. The activity of an antibody can be measured by the strength of its interaction, related to the adhesive energy exchanged during RBC agglutination which depends on the antigen-antibody liaison strength. To estimate this adhesive energy, two methods are used in this paper. Firstly, the dissociation behaviour of suspended RBC agglutinates was analysed by laser backscattering intensity (r) in a Couette flow. Backscattered intensity issued from shear-induced mechanical dissociation is recorded and submitted to a numerical process to obtain the energy parameter (ED). Secondly, a modification of this technique is proposed for measuring specific binding energy. Samples were exposed to increasing shear stress, and backscattered intensity was recorded. A constant increase of this intensity with raising shear stress was observed, pointed to a progressive dissociation of RBC agglutinates into smaller ones. Considering that complete dissociation of agglutinates is only approached asymptotically it is assumed that the final break-up of doublets (two-cell agglutinates) is produced at a critical shear stress (tauC) reflecting the work done to breaking-up the molecular bridges between both adjacent cells. This shear stress is defined by the extrapolation of the linear part of the curves [r-log tau] to the backscattered signal (r0) corresponding to the complete dispersion of RBCs. These approaches permit to define the specific surface adhesive energy (Gamma) by using the Derjaguin relation and to assess the functional characterization of specific immunoglobulins. In conclusion, two parameters characterizing monoclonal antibody agglutination properties, ED and Gamma, were estimated by laser backscattering methods, which could be very useful for antibodies quality control.

RESUMO

AIM: Diclofenac sodium is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug commonly used to attenuate painful inflammatory reactions in surgery. However, it may delay healing in the skin and gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of Diclofenac in vascular healing. METHODS: Ninety rabbits had their carotid arteries sectioned and reconstructed by end-to-end anastomosis with interrupted sutures. The animals were randomly allocated into 3 groups of 30 each and treated by intramuscular route with saline (control), 5 mg/kg/day of diclofenac sodium (DS-5), and 10 mg/kg/day of diclofenac sodium (DS-10). Treatment began on the day of surgery and lasted 4 days. Angiography, biomechanical properties (failure load, failure elongation, yield point, yield point elongation, and stiffness were obtained from the load/elongation curve), macroscopic and histological examinations (hematoxylin-eosin, Masson, Calleja, Picrossirius-red), and scanning electron microscopy were studied in both arteries on the 3rd and 15th postoperative days. RESULTS: No significant differences in biomechanical properties were observed either in the 3 groups or the experimental times. The carotid artery healing process was similar in the 3 groups. CONCLUSION: Diclofenac sodium did not cause alterations nor delayed carotid artery healing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Many publications have emphasized the need of proper cleaning, disinfection and sterilization process for reused materials intended to prevent cross infections. As the endoscope the esophageal manometry catheters are considered as semicritical materials and must be free of microrganisms. AIM: To standardize the esophageal manometry materials cleaning and disinfection process to guarantee the safety of patients when reusing semicritical materials. It was based on international protocols and according to recommendations of the Hospital Infection Control Commission of the "Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre", Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Enzymatic detergent was used for catheter cleaning, followed by immersion with 2% glutaraldehyde solution during 20 minutes for high-level disinfection. The water reservatory was kept clean and dry to prevent microorganisms proliferation. CONCLUSIONS: The high level disinfection with 2% glutaraldehyde, preceded by enzymatic detergent cleaning, is a safe and simple technique that avoids cross infection in the esophageal manometry equipment. This care must be taken after each manometric procedure. The transducers must be resterilized in ethylene oxide. The professionals of this area must work in concordance with the Hospital Infection Control Commission, being acquainted with the country laws and regulations and keeping sterilizing process and materials updated.

RESUMO

From 1989 to 1993, "Oye, Amigos!" a combined group of hearing health and other medical professionals performed 18 humanitarian medical and audiologic trips to Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. The group saw 1500 patients, issued over 800 hearing aids, and performed 150 surgeries on 123 patients. Our tympanoplasty success rate, defined as an intact tympanic membrane, was 41% during the first 2 years of the project but increased to 74% during the last 3 years. Two hundred eighteen patients who were candidates for surgery did not return for care. We present the lessons learned from the surgical care and overall management of this project, and present suggestions to improve future projects.

We studied an experimental model of resection arthroplasty with or without tendon ball interposition in the wrist of dogs. Animals were divided into two groups. Animals in group A were treated by resection of the os carpi radiale with interposition of a ball made from the tendon of the extensor carpi radialis and the group B underwent bone resection alone. Animals were assessed 1, 6, 12 and 24 weeks after operation. In all of them the wrist joint was stable and had good mobility, allowing walking supported by the operated limb. In both groups biological material filled the cavity created by bone resection. A progressive repair process resulted in fibroplasia with areas of fibrocartilaginous metaplasia. The tendon ball showed complete ischaemic necrosis at the end of the first week, which delayed the healing process.
