Small-world networks and scale-free networks are well-known theoretical models within the realm of complex graphs. These models exhibit "low" average shortest-path length; however, key distinctions are observed in their degree distributions and average clustering coefficients: in small-world networks, the degree distribution is bell-shaped and the clustering is "high"; in scale-free networks, the degree distribution follows a power law and the clustering is "low". Here, a model for generating scale-free graphs with "high" clustering is numerically explored, since these features are concurrently identified in networks representing social interactions. In this model, the values of average degree and exponent of the power-law degree distribution are both adjustable, and spatial limitations in the creation of links are taken into account. Several topological metrics are calculated and compared for computer-generated graphs. Unexpectedly, the numerical experiments show that, by varying the model parameters, a transition from a power-law to a bell-shaped degree distribution can occur. Also, in these graphs, the degree distribution is most accurately characterized by a pure power-law for values of the exponent typically found in real-world networks.

RESUMO

The Ultimatum Game is a simplistic representation of bargaining processes occurring in social networks. In the standard version of this game, the first player, called the proposer, makes an offer on how to split a certain amount of money. If the second player, called the responder, accepts the offer, the money is divided according to the proposal; if the responder declines the offer, both players receive no money. In this article, an agent-based model is employed to evaluate the performance of five distinct strategies of playing a modified version of this game. A strategy corresponds to instructions on how a player must act as the proposer and as the responder. Here, the strategies are inspired by the following basic emotions: anger, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise. Thus, in the game, each interacting agent is a player endowed with one of these five basic emotions. In the modified version explored in this article, the spatial dimension is taken into account and the survival of the players depends on successful negotiations. Numerical simulations are performed in order to determine which basic emotion dominates the population in terms of prevalence and accumulated money. Information entropy is also computed to assess the time evolution of population diversity and money distribution. From the obtained results, a conjecture on the emergence of the sense of fairness is formulated.

Let the individuals of a population be divided into two groups with different personal habits. The core group is associated with health risk behaviors; the non-core group avoids unhealthy activities. Assume that the infected individuals of the core group can spread a contagious disease to the whole population. Also, assume that cure does not confer immunity. Here, an epidemiological model written as a set of ordinary differential equations is proposed to investigate the infection propagation in this population. In the model, migrations between these two groups are allowed; however, the transitions from the non-core group into the core group prevail. These migrations can be either spontaneous or stimulated by social pressure. It is analytically shown that, in the scenario of spontaneous migration, the disease is either naturally eradicated or chronically persists at a constant level. In the scenario of stimulated migration, in addition to eradication and constant persistence, self-sustained oscillations in the number of sick individuals can also be found. These analytical results are illustrated by numerical simulations and discussed from a public health perspective.

Here, an epidemiological model considering pro and anti-vaccination groups is proposed and analyzed. In this model, susceptible individuals can migrate between these two groups due to the influence of false and true news about safety and efficacy of vaccines. From this model, written as a set of three ordinary differential equations, analytical expressions for the disease-free steady state, the endemic steady state, and the basic reproduction number are derived. It is analytically shown that low vaccination rate and no influx to the pro-vaccination group have similar impacts on the long-term amount of infected individuals. Numerical simulations are performed with parameter values of the COVID-19 pandemic to illustrate the analytical results. The possible relevance of this work is discussed from a public health perspective.

People's attitudes and behaviors are partially shaped by the socioeconomic class to which they belong. In this work, a model of scale-free graph is proposed to represent the daily personal contacts in a society with three social classes. In the model, the probability of having a connection between two individuals depends on their social classes and on their physical distance. Numerical simulations are performed by considering sociodemographic data from France, Peru, and Zimbabwe. For the complex networks built for these three countries, average values of node degree, shortest-path length, clustering coefficient, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality, and eigenvector centrality are computed. These numerical results are discussed by taking into account the propagation of information about COVID-19.

RESUMO

Bereavement exclusion (BE) is a criterion for excluding the diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD). Simplistically, this criterion states that an individual who reports MDD symptoms should not be diagnosed as suffering from this mental illness, if such an individual is grieving a sorrowful loss. BE was introduced in 1980 to avoid confusing MDD with normal grief, because several cognitive and physical symptoms of grief and depression can look similar. However, in 2013, BE was removed from the MDD diagnosis guidelines. Here, this controversial topic is computationally investigated. A virtual population is generated according to the Brazilian data of death rate and MDD prevalence and its five kinds of individuals are clustered by using a Kohonen's self-organizing map (SOM). In addition, by examining the current guidelines for diagnosing MDD from an analytical perspective, a slight modification is proposed. With this modification, an adequate clustering is achieved by the SOM neural network. Therefore, for mathematical consistency, unbalanced scores should be assigned to the items composing the MDD diagnostic criteria. With the proposed criteria, the co-occurrence of normal grief and MDD can also be satisfactorily clustered.

RESUMO

Serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine are monoamine neurotransmitters that modulate our mood state. Hence, imbalances in the levels of these neurotransmitters have been linked to the incidence of several psychiatric disorders. Here, a mathematical model written in terms of ordinary differential equations is proposed to represent the interaction of these three neurotransmitters. It is analytically and numerically shown that this model can experience a Hopf bifurcation. Thus, by varying a parameter value, the neurotransmitter levels can change from a steady state to an oscillatory behavior, which may be at least a partial explanation of the mood swings observed in depressed people.

RESUMO

A computational model based on game theory is here proposed to forecast the prevalence of depression caused by frustration in a competitive environment. This model comprises a spatially structured game, in which the individuals are socially connected. This game, which is equivalent to the well-known prisoner's dilemma, represents the payoffs that can be received by the individuals in the labor market. These individuals may or may not have invested in a formal academic education. It is assumed that an individual becomes depressed when the difference between the average payoff earned by the neighbors in this game and the personal payoff surpasses a critical number, which can be distinct for men and women. Thus, the transition to depression depends on two thresholds, whose values are tuned for the model accurately predicting the percentage of individuals that become depressed due to a frustrating payoff. Here, this tuning is performed by using data of young adults living in the United Kingdom in 2014-2016.

RESUMO

Here, the propagation of vector-borne diseases is modeled by using a probabilistic cellular automaton. Numerical simulations considering distinct spatial distributions and time variations of the vector abundance are performed, in order to investigate their impacts on the number of infected individuals of the host population. The main conclusion is as follows: in the clustered distributions, the prevalence is lower, but the eradication is more difficult to be achieved, as compared to homogeneous distributions. This result can be relevant in the implementation of preventive surveillance measures.

A Newman-Watts graph is formed by including random links in a regular lattice. Here, the emergence of synchronization in coupled Newman-Watts graphs is studied. The whole neural network is considered as a toy model of mammalian visual pathways. It is composed by four coupled graphs, in which a coupled pair represents the lateral geniculate nucleus and the visual cortex of a cerebral hemisphere. The hemispheres communicate with each other through a coupling between the graphs representing the visual cortices. This coupling makes the role of the corpus callosum. The state transition of neurons, supposed to be the nodes of the graphs, occurs in discrete time and it follows a set of deterministic rules. From periodic stimuli coming from the retina, the neuronal activity of the whole network is numerically computed. The goal is to find out how the values of the parameters related to the network topology affect the synchronization among the four graphs.

Let a neuronal population be composed of an excitatory group interconnected to an inhibitory group. In the Wilson-Cowan model, the activity of each group of neurons is described by a first-order nonlinear differential equation. The source of the nonlinearity is the interaction between these two groups, which is represented by a sigmoidal function. Such a nonlinearity makes difficult theoretical works. Here, we analytically investigate the dynamics of a pair of coupled populations described by the Wilson-Cowan model by using a linear approximation. The analytical results are compared to numerical simulations, which show that the trajectories of this fourth-order dynamical system can converge to an equilibrium point, a limit cycle, a two-dimensional torus, or a chaotic attractor. The relevance of this study is discussed from a biological perspective.

We study the spreading of contagious diseases in a population of constant size using susceptible-infective-recovered (SIR) models described in terms of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and probabilistic cellular automata (PCA). In the PCA model, each individual (represented by a cell in the lattice) is mainly locally connected to others. We investigate how the topological properties of the random network representing contacts among individuals influence the transient behavior and the permanent regime of the epidemiological system described by ODE and PCA. Our main conclusions are: (1) the basic reproduction number (commonly called R 0 ) related to a disease propagation in a population cannot be uniquely determined from some features of transient behavior of the infective group; (2) R 0 cannot be associated to a unique combination of clustering coefficient and average shortest path length characterizing the contact network. We discuss how these results can embarrass the specification of control strategies for combating disease propagations.

RESUMO

This essay proposes methods to analyse the variability of biological data. The idea is to express the state of a biological system as a linear combination of base states in a Hilbert space. Coefficients of the linear combination can be interpreted as probabilities and informational entropy is associated to each state allowing the definition of a classical variability measure. Besides, state transition matrices can also be calculated and their norms express the dynamics of the system organization and a quantum variability measure. As the examples show, the classical measure expresses a structural variability and the quantum measure expresses a functional variability.

Wilson-Cowan model is employed in studies concerning neuronal networks. This model consists of two nonlinear differential equations that represent the interaction between excitatory and inhibitory populations of neurons. The mutual influence of these populations is described through a sigmoidal function, which is usually chosen as the hyperbolic tangent or the logistic curve. Both choices make difficult theoretical analyses. Here we choose another sigmoidal function and analytically obtain the set of parameter values for which an asymptotically stable limit cycle exists. This result is potentially useful to analytical and numerical works on the binding problem, which is the problem of creating a coherent representation of objects from the oscillatory activity of spatially separated cortical columns.
